Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the amplification of picosecond pulses at high repetition rates through the coherent addition of successive pulses of a mode-locked pulse train in a high-finesse optical cavity equipped with cavity dumping. Amplification greater than 30 times is obtained at a repetition rate of 253 kHz, boosting the 5.3-nJ pulses from a commercial mode-locked picosecond Ti:sapphire laser to pulse energies of more than 150 nJ. Passive mode locking of optical parametric oscillators: an efficient technique for generating sub-picosecond pulses

Abstract:We show that optical parametric generation in a nonlinear crystal with a large group velocity mismatch between the pump and nearly-degenerate signal and idler is analogous to laser amplification in the medium with a gain recovery time comparable to the walk-off time. Based on this conclusion we propose to combine an OPO with a nonlinear saturable absorber or Kerr lens to generate directly high peak power sub-picosecond pulses using pump pulses ranging from tens of picoseconds to quasi-CW. Our analytical model predicts better than 80% photon conversion efficiency and pulse lengths that are of the order of a few hundred femtoseconds. Numerical simulations confirm our predictions and show that repetitive passive mode locking is feasible with a quasi-CW pump.

Abstract:We numerically investigate the ultrafast dynamic nonlinear mechanism of an Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity with femtosecond (fs) pumping by the transmission change of an incident signal pulse. The nonlinear effect simulated by a two-level system model can decrease the dielectric constant. Therefore, the temporally transmitted pulse is compressed owing to the faster phase velocity, and a sloped change in the transmission spectra is observed, which can be explained by the mechanism of pulse deformation. In addition, we stretched a certain part of the temporally transmitted pulse to further demonstrate the deformation of the pulse mechanism. This dynamic nonlinear mechanism based on the FP cavity can not only be used to design new optical devices with ultrafast response times, such as pulse modulators and passive amplifiers, but can also be easily constructed and integrated, which has great practical applications.

Abstract:A novel ultra-broadband optical parametric amplifier (OPA), which directly amplifies non-chirped femtosecond signal pulses by using picosecond pumping pulses at a wavelength corresponding to the second-harmonic of the signal, is proposed and studied numerically. The OPA is capable of supporting amplification of few-cycle femtosecond pulses and can be highly efficient due to the sweep of the signal within the picosecond pump pulse resulting from the group-velocity mismatch.

Abstract:Optical quadratic nonlinearity is ultrafast in nature, while parametric interaction usually manifests only the broadband characteristic. Enormous progress has been made toward broadband phase-matching for parametric amplification and wide applications. In existing devices of broadband parametric amplification, the power efficiency of conversion is restricted to approximately the energy efficiency, and the desire for the signal power enhancement necessitates additional pulse compression after amplification. Here, we demonstrate ultrafast parametric amplification having an extraordinary power efficiency of 1155%; this allows the generation of intense femtosecond pulses without the need for a pulse stretcher and compressor. Direct femtosecond signal amplification by picosecond pumping is enabled by an ultrafast parametric environment in which the pre-delayed signal of faster speed gradually overtakes and effectively depletes the pump of slower speed as they propagate in a nonlinear crystal. The demonstrated technique should lead to breakthroughs in ultrafast lasers as well as applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate the generation of sub-picosecond optical pulses using a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and a linear polarizer placed in a ring-laser configuration. Nonlinear polarization rotation in the SOA serves as the passive mode-locking mechanism. The ring cavity generates pulses with duration below 800 fs (FWHM) at a repetition rate of 14 MHz. The time -bandwidth product is 0.48. Simulation results in good agreement with the experimental results are presented.

Abstract:We report a new type of optical parametric oscillator (OPO) cavity, i.e., a compound cavity OPO. Both the numerical simulation and experimental results show that this type of cavity is superior, in that its threshold is lower than that of a simple narrow-band cavity with dispersive elements, and its external efficiency is increased while its narrow linewidth remains nearly the same across the tunable range of the nonlinear crystals used.
Picosecond laser pulses for quantum dot-microcavity based single photon generation by cascaded electro-optic modulation of a narrow-linewidth laser

Abstract:Recent developments in integrated optics have made it possible to fabricate high-bandwidth electro-optic modulators (EOMs). Here we show cascaded operation of two of such modulators driven by custom-built electronics delivering on-demand picosecond pulses and application to a quantum dot cavity-QED single photon source. We implement an EOM-based correlation technique and demonstrate light pulses as short as 24$\pm$2 ps with a single EOM. The EOMs can be synchronized and operated in series, we then produce optical pulses down to 17 ps. To optimize the pulse contrast, we analyze for two different EOM devices the transmission as a function of EOM bias, wavelength and temperature, and we show that by temperature tuning and stabilization, a pulse contrast above 25 dB can be obtained at the targeted wavelength. With this high contrast we demonstrate resonant excitation of an InGaAs quantum dot - microcavity based single photon source, demonstrating a crucial technology for scalability and synchronization of large scale photonic quantum applications.

Abstract:Nonlinear optical gain modulation (NOGM) is a method to generate high performance ultrafast pulses with wavelength versatility. Here we demonstrate coherent femtosecond Raman pulse generation through cascaded NOGM process experimentally. Two single-frequency seed lasers (1121 and 1178 nm) are gain-modulated by 117 nJ 1064 nm picosecond pulses in a Raman fiber amplifier. Second-order (1178 nm) Stokes pulses are generated, which have a pulse energy of 76 nJ (corresponding to an optical conversion efficiency of 65%) with a pulse duration of 621 fs (after compression). Dynamic evolution of both pump and cascaded Stokes pulses within the Raman amplifier are investigated by numerical simulations. The influences of pump pulse duration and energy are studied in detail numerically. Moreover, the simulations reveal that NOGM pulses with higher energy and shorter pulse duration could be obtained by limiting the impact of walk-off effect between pump and Raman pulses. This approach can offer a high energy and wavelength-agile ultrafast source for various applications such as optical metrology and biomedical imagining.

Abstract:In this paper, passive Q-switching is investigated in a 25 km ultra long cavity all-fiber ring laser operating in anomalous dispersion regime. We experimentally demonstrate Q-switched pulses with kHz repetition rate and nano-joule scale pulse energy. More specifically, we obtain a Q-switched pulse train with 52.083 kHz repetition rate and average pulse energy of 10.880 nJ. The Q-switching state threshold for this laser cavity is found to be 420 mW. Stable Q-switching state is observed when the pump power exceeds 570 mW. As our setup has limited pump power, mode-locked state is not observed. However, by implementing a laser diode pump with higher pump power together with a longer length of erbium-doped fiber (EDF) as well as a lower overall cavity loss, this scheme has the potential to achieve mode-locking state.

Abstract:The research and development of laser systems for intracavity phase interferometry is described. These systems are based on an intracavity synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator (OPO), enabling the generation of two trains of picosecond pulses inside a single cavity. In such a configuration, it is possible to measure the beat note frequency between two pulses and to very precisely determine the phase difference between them. The pump source is a diode-pumped passively mode-locked Nd:YVO4 laser. A periodically poled magnesium-doped lithium niobate crystal is used as the optical parametric oscillator crystal coupling the pump and the signal cavities. We designed a synchronously pumped OPO in a linear and ring cavity configuration allowing generation in a dual-pulse regime. By a mutual detuning of both cavity lengths, the quasi-synchronous regime of pumping was achieved and high harmonics of repetition rate frequencies were generated. Such a system can be useful for applications such as pump-probe spectroscopy or for testing telecommunication systems. We also realized the subharmonic OPO cavity as a source of two independent trains of picosecond pulses suitable for intracavity phase interferometry; we also measured the beat note signal.

Abstract:Telecommunication systems using 200 fs optical pulses for ultrahigh bit-rate optical transmission require new concepts to be developed for ultrafast all-optical switching. On the basis of numerical experiments, we discuss how a semiconductor optical amplifier in a Sagnac interferometric arrangement can be used for switching these short pulses. The switching principle is based on gain and index saturation dynamics on a sub-picosecond timescale. The model accounts for bi-directional propagation of ultrashort optical pulses through the amplifier as well as free-carrier absorption and two-photon absorption.
High-energy picosecond pulses with a single spatial mode from a passively mode-locked, broad-area semiconductor laser

Abstract:We present a mode-locked semiconductor laser oscillator that emits few picosecond pulses (5-8ps at 379MHz repetition) with record peak power (112W) and pulse energy (0.5nJ) directly out of the oscillator (with no amplifier). To achieve this high power performance we employ a high-current broad-area, spatially multi-mode diode amplifier (0.3x5mm), placed in an external cavity that enforces oscillation in a single spatial mode. Consequently, the brightness of the beam is near-ideal ($M^2 = 1.3$). Mode locking is achieved by dividing the large diode chip (edge emitter) into two sections with independent electrical control: one large section for gain and another small section for a saturable absorber. Precise tuning of the reverse voltage on the absorber section allows to tune the saturation level and recovery time of the absorber, which provides a convenient control knob to optimize the mode-locking performance for various cavity conditions.

Abstract:We report the performance of a type-I barium borate optical parametric amplifier pumped by 15 ps, 355 nm laser pulses. We show that it is possible to obtain narrowband (≂3 Å), high-energy (≥200 μJ), widely tunable (0.4–2 μm) picosecond pulses with a maximum pump-to-signal energy conversion better than 30%.

Abstract:An all-fiber high-energy nonlinear chirped-pulse amplification system with two-stage double-cladding fiber amplifiers is presented in this paper. It generates pulses with the energy up to 10 μJ at 20 kHz repetition rate and total accumulated nonlinear phase shift as large as 12.8π. The pulses can be compressed to 137 fs with the compensation of mismatched third-order dispersion by self-phase modulation in the fiber amplifiers.

Abstract:We report a high-energy, high-repetition CW pumped Nd:YVO4 amplifier system, that produces 10.5W, 14.2 ps pulses at 1064 nm wavelength and 5W pulses at 532 nm wavelength with a repetition rate of 10 kHz. Pulses from a passively mode-locked Nd:YVO4 oscillator are first generated by cavity dumping, and then further amplified in a regenerative amplifier from 545 nJ to 1 mJ with a CW diode-pumped Nd:YVO4. Abstract:We report a high-energy, picosecond, mid-infrared (MIR) optical parametric oscillator (OPO), in which a length of hollow-core-fiber (HCF) is employed to enable operation at 1-MHz repetition rate in a compact cavity format. The OPO is synchronously pumped by an ytterbium-doped-fiber (YDF) master-oscillator-power-amplifier (MOPA) system, seeded by a 1040-nm gain-switched laser diode (GSLD). Using periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) as the nonlinear crystal, the OPO generates signal and idler beams with tunable wavelengths in the range of 1329-1641 nm and 2841-4790 nm, respectively. The OPO provides 137-ps pulses with a maximum signal energy of 10.05 µJ at 1600 nm and a maximum idler energy of 5.13 µJ at 2967 nm. This, to the best of our knowledge, represents the highest energy MIR pulses, as well as the highest total converted pulse energy (15.18 µJ), ever achieved from a fiber laser pumped picosecond OPO.
