Abstract:We demonstrate a picosecond fiber-optical parametric oscillator with an ultrawide tuning range pumped by a relatively low-cost intensity-modulated pump. The tuning range of the oscillator is from 1320 to 1520 nm and from 1580 to 1820 nm, which is as wide as 440 nm, with a wavelength span of 500 nm. A 40-m dispersion-shifted fiber is employed inside a cavity as the parametric gain medium. In the wavelength region from 1320 to 1395 nm and from 1720 to 1820 nm, the linewidth of the sideband is less than 1 nm without the use of any wavelength-selective element inside the cavity. Pulses with pulsewidths from 7 to 17 ps are generated.

Abstract:We demonstrated a fully fiber-integrated widely tunable picosecond optical parametric oscillator based on highly nonlinear fiber. The ring cavity with a 50 m highly nonlinear fiber was synchronously pumped with a picosecond mode-locked fiber laser. The tuning range was from 1413 to 1543 nm and from 1573 to 1695 nm, which was as wide as 250 nm. A high-quality pulse was generated with a pulse width narrower than that of the pump.

Abstract:We report the experimental demonstration of a fully fiber-integrated picosecond optical parametric oscillator. The gain is provided by a 50-meters homemade photonic crystal fiber in the ring cavity. A time-dispersion-tuned technique is used to allow the oscillator to select the oscillating wavelength adaptively and synchronize with the pump pulse train. The output wavelength of the oscillator can be continuously tuned from 988 to 1046 nm and from 1085 to 1151 nm by adjusting the pump wavelength and the time-dispersion-tuned technique simultaneously. Abstract:We first demonstrate a wideband generation of picosecond pulse using fiber optical parametric amplifier (FOPA). High quality pulse is generated at 85 nm away from the pump with pulsewidth narrower than that of the pump. We then explore fiber optical parametric oscillator (FOPO) configuration which has the advantage of eliminating the need of seeding laser, leading to a potentially wider wavelength tunability and flexibility. The tuning range of the FOPO is from 1511 nm to 1541 nm and from 1583 nm to 1613 nm, which is as wide as 60 nm, with wavelength span of over 100 nm. Nearly-transform-limited sub-picosecond pulses are generated by this technique.

Abstract:We demonstrate a dispersion-tuned fiber optical parametric oscillator (FOPO)-based swept source with a sweep rate of 40 kHz and a wavelength tuning range of 109 nm around 1550 nm. The cumulative speed exceeds 4,000,000 nm/s. The FOPO is pumped by a sinusoidally modulated pump, which is driven by a clock sweeping linearly from 1 to 1.0006 GHz. A spool of dispersion-compensating fiber is added inside the cavity to perform dispersion tuning. The instantaneous linewidth is 0.8 nm without the use of any wavelength selective element inside the cavity. 1 GHz pulses with pulse width of 150 ps are generated.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, the use of optical fiber for optical parametric chirped pulse amplification to amplify subpicosecond pulses. We use this system to amplify a subpicosecond signal at 1595 nm generated by a fiber-optical parametric oscillator. The 750-fs signal from the oscillator output is stretched to 40 ps, amplified by an all-fiber optical parametric amplifier and then compressed to 808 fs. The peak power of the signal is amplified from 93 mW to 10 W.

Abstract:A wavelength-swept fiber optical parametric oscillator (FOPO) based on dispersion tuning technology at wavelength around 1 mu m is demonstrated. A continuous wave single-longitudinal-mode ytterbium doped fiber laser with a line-width of 0.05 nm is modulated through a LiNbO3 Mach-Zehnder modulator to be a pulsed source with variable repetition rate. The pulsed source is amplified with a two-stage ytterbium doped fiber amplifier (YDFA) to a mediate power and a high power YDFA to peak power higher than 40 W. And a homemade 50-m photonic crystal fiber (PCF) which provides the optical parametric gain is pumped by the pulsed source. The optical modulator is driven by a frequency-swept electrical clock signal with frequency ranges from 107.24 MHz to 107.31 MHz. Thus the FOPO generates a wavelength-swept light source with a range of 80 nm centered at 1065.10 nm. Through careful customizing the sweeping rate of the driving clock signal, the sweeping rate of the parametric oscillator can be up to 10 kHz, which is limited by currently used electrical sweeping source. The generated pulses train are with pulse width of about 110 ps. For the electrical scan is used instead of the traditional mechanical scanning method in conventional wavelength-swept sources, it performs better stability under prolonged operation. The wavelength-swept FOPO is potential to be applied in OCT systems for its good stability and advantaged wavelength band.

Abstract:We report a fiber optical parametric amplifier (FOPA) based on a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with optimized dispersion and nonlinear properties pumped by a mode-locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser. Wavelength-tunable parametric gain bands can be obtained by adjusting the pump wavelength from the anomalous to the normal dispersion regime. By utilizing the PCF-based FOPA, weak signals located in the parametric gain bands can be amplified. Wavelength-tunable picosecond pulses can be generated at the signal and idler wavelengths. A 58-dB maximum gain and a wide gain bandwidth from 999 to 1139 nm have been achieved by pumping near the zero-dispersion wavelength. When the FOPA is pumped at 1062.5 nm in the normal dispersion regime of the PCF, the 974-nm weak continuous-wave signal is significantly amplified, and the idler pulse is generated at 1168 nm.

Abstract:We report a high-energy, picosecond, mid-infrared (MIR) optical parametric oscillator (OPO), in which a length of hollow-core-fiber (HCF) is employed to enable operation at 1-MHz repetition rate in a compact cavity format. The OPO is synchronously pumped by an ytterbium-doped-fiber (YDF) master-oscillator-power-amplifier (MOPA) system, seeded by a 1040-nm gain-switched laser diode (GSLD). Using periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) as the nonlinear crystal, the OPO generates signal and idler beams with tunable wavelengths in the range of 1329-1641 nm and 2841-4790 nm, respectively. The OPO provides 137-ps pulses with a maximum signal energy of 10.05 µJ at 1600 nm and a maximum idler energy of 5.13 µJ at 2967 nm. This, to the best of our knowledge, represents the highest energy MIR pulses, as well as the highest total converted pulse energy (15.18 µJ), ever achieved from a fiber laser pumped picosecond OPO.

Abstract:We report on a long-term stable 50 fs pulse generation directly from a nonlinear amplified loop mirror based fiber oscillator. The laser cavity with all-polarization-maintaining fiber components can generate pulses with 0.16 nJ pulse energy and 50 fs pulse width under 85 MHz repetition rate. The 0-45 degrees C high-low temperature test, together with the 15 h output power test, shows the excellent stability of the few-cycle pulsed laser.

Abstract:The stable operation of a high-repetition-rate dispersion-tuned harmonically mode-locked fiber-optical parametric oscillator (FOPO) is demonstrated for the first time to the best of our knowledge. The experimental results match well with the theory. By introducing large cavity dispersion, the round-trip delay can vary with wavelength. Thus the cavity can be synchronized with the modulation frequency of an external clock passively. The FOPO can be tuned simply by adjusting the modulation frequency. A stable 10-GHz pulse train is obtained over 6-nm tuning range for each of the signal and idler.

Abstract:A novel ultra-broadband optical parametric amplifier (OPA), which directly amplifies non-chirped femtosecond signal pulses by using picosecond pumping pulses at a wavelength corresponding to the second-harmonic of the signal, is proposed and studied numerically. The OPA is capable of supporting amplification of few-cycle femtosecond pulses and can be highly efficient due to the sweep of the signal within the picosecond pump pulse resulting from the group-velocity mismatch.

Abstract:An all-fiber parametric oscillator which is pumped by a mode-locked Er-doped picosecond fiber laser is proposed for the generation of multi-wavelength picosecond lasing pulses. The length of a fiber-coupled optical delay line is adjusted so that the first signal wavelength is tuned closer to the pump wavelength to facilitate the generation of more lasing wavelengths. 10 orders of cascaded four-wave-mixing processes are achieved and picosecond pulses at 17 lasing wavelengths from 1264.7 nm to 1842.4 nm are demonstrated. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest number of lasing wavelengths reported so far from a fiber optical parametric oscillator pumped with an ultrashort-pulse laser.

Abstract:We demonstrate a cost effective, linearly tunable fiber optical parametric oscillator based on a home-made photonic crystal fiber pumped with a mode-locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser, providing linely tuning ranges from 1018 nm to 1038 nm for the idler wavelength and from 1097 nm to 1117 nm for the signal wavelength by tuning the pump wavelength and the cavity length. In order to obtain the desired fiber with a zero dispersion wavelength around 1060 nm, eight samples of photonic crystal fibers with gradually changed structural parameters are fabricated for the reason that it is difficult to accurately customize the structural dimensions during fabrication. We verify the usability of the fabricated fiber experimentally via optical parametric generation and conclude a successful procedure of design, fabirication, and verification. A seed source of home-made all-normal-dispersion mode-locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser with 38.57 ps pulsewidth around the 1064 nm wavelength is used to pump the fiber optical parametric oscillator. The wide picosecond pulse pump laser enables a larger walk-off tolerance between the pump light and the oscillating light as well as a longer photonic crystal fiber of 20 m superior to the femtosecond pulse lasers, resulting in a larger parametric amplification and a lower threshold pump power of 15.8 dBm of the fiber optical parametric oscillator.
