Abstract:We demonstrate a simple, robust, and cost-effective method of generating high-speed multiwavelength picosecond optical pulses. This method is based on chirp compression of phase-modulated light, followed by nonlinear pulse compression and reshaping with a double-side Mamyshev reshaper. We show that this method becomes power efficient when the repetition rate is increased to 25 GHz. Wavelength-tunable optical pulses with a repetition rate of 25 GHz and pulse width of ∼2 ps, which can be temporally multiplexed to 100 GHz, are experimentally obtained over a large spectral range with moderate electrical and optical power. Simultaneous pulse generation on four wavelengths is demonstrated.

Abstract:We report on a femtosecond nonlinear amplification fiber laser system using a vector-dispersion compressor, which consists of a transmission grating pair and multipass cell based Gires-Tournois interferometer mirrors. The mirror is designed with nearly zero group-delay dispersion and large negative third-order dispersion. As a result, the third-order dispersion of the compressor can be adjusted independently to compensate the nonlinear phase shift of amplified pulses to reduce the pulse pedestal. With this scheme, the system outputs 44 fs laser pulses with little wing at 26.6W output average power and 531 nJ pulse energy, corresponding to 10.8MW peak power. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Photonic generation of ultrawideband (UWB) monocycle and doublet pulses is experimentally demonstrated using a cascaded electroabsorption modulator (EAM) and semiconductor optical amplifier by exploiting a combination of cross-absorption modulation and cross-gain modulation. The polarities and shapes of UWB monocycle and doublet pulses can be simply controlled using an optical time-delay controller and the reverse voltage applied to the EAM. The corresponding measured rf spectra meet the UWB criteria.

Abstract:An optical pulse generation scheme based on an ultra-short chirped seed pulse generator followed by a dual-stage fiber-based nonlinear pulse processing stage is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. After phase modulation and linear-chirp compensation, optical seed pulse with a duty cycle of 9.8% and an obvious pedestal is obtained. By soliton compression and Mamyshev reshaping, a pedestal-free optical pulse with a duty cycle of 2% and an extinction ratio of 27 dB is achieved. Abstract:In this paper the operation characteristics of a novel picosecond pulse source is investigated experimentally and simulated numerically. The stable and pedestal-free pulse source is consisted of an electroabsorption modulator (EAM) and the following well-designed fiber-based pulse compressor. The obtained pulse has width of less than 2.5ps, high extinction ratio, low timing jitter even in a large pump power range of around 2.4dB. The basic function and characteristics of every component in the compressor is investigated in detail. The experimental results are in complete agreement with the simulation results. Finally, as an application illustration of the obtained pulse source, the obtained pulse train is applied to 16×10Gbit/s optical time-division multiplexing (OTDM) system successfully.

Abstract:A short pulse generator based on a commercially available bulk material electroabsorption modulator was experimentally demonstrated. By optimizing the length of the dispersion compensation fibre, nearly transform limited pulse was generated. There are a 2-ps-pulsed train with a timing jitter of 650 fs and a repetition rate of 10 GHz obtained with two-stage nonlinear compression. The quality of the pulse was further verified by 4 x 10 Gbit/s optical time-division-multiplexed communication system experiment in which a low demultiplexing power penalty of 0.3 dB was achieved.

Abstract:Multicolor optical Nyquist pulse generation based on self-phase modulation without line-by-line control is proposed and experimental demonstrated. By 1.4-ps nearly chirp-free optical Gaussian pulse pumping of a high nonlinearity fiber, a 25-GHz spacing, flat-topped supercontinuum (SC) over 17.8nm within 3.6dB power variation at a modest pump power of 21.8dBm is performed. As the phase of the central 90 tones is almost linear to the wavelength after dispersion compensation, spatial light modulator placed after SC for precise line-by-line control both of amplitude and phase can be replaced by conventional optical band-pass filter (OBPF). With an array of quasi-rectangular OBPFs, nearly transform-limited optical Nyquist pulses with a duty cycle of 5.5% on 4 wavelengths are achieved simultaneously.

Abstract:A stable 10GHz ultrashort pulse generator consisted of an electroabsorption modulator (EAM) and a well-designed fibre-based pulse compressor is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. the obtained short pulse has high extinction ratio, no pedestal, low timing jitter, and FWHM of only 2.4 ps. The excellent performance of multiplexing from 10GHz to 160GHz confirms the potential of the generator for applications in 160 Gbit/s optical time-division-multiplexing (OTDM) systems.

Abstract:We describe a system for generating frequency-chirped and amplitude-shaped pulses on time scales from sub-nanosecond to ten nanoseconds. The system starts with cw diode-laser light at 780 nm and utilizes fiber-based electro-optical phase and intensity modulators, driven by an arbitrary waveform generator, to generate the shaped pulses. These pulses are subsequently amplified to several hundred mW with a tapered amplifier in a delayed double-pass configuration. Frequency chirps up to 5 GHz in 2 ns and pulse widths as short as 0.15 ns have been realized.

Abstract:A dual-wavelength optical Gaussian pulse generation scheme based on a single-driven dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator with subsequent Mamyshev reshaping is proposed. Experimental results show that nearly chirp-free Gaussian pulses with a full width at half maximum of 2.7-ps and a repetition rate of 25-GHz on 2 wavelengths are achieved simultaneously. By changing the central wavelengths of the continuous wave light and the optical bandpass filter, nearly transform-limited optical Gaussian pulses are obtained over the C-band. The pulse source is further employed in a 100-Gbit/s on-off keying optical time division multiplexing transmission system. Abstract:n ultrashort optical pulse generator based on nonlinear pulse shaping is proposed and demonstrated. With a spatial light modulator placed prior to a high nonlinearity fiber, (μ +λ ) -evolution strategy is introduced to dynamically adjust the transfer function of spatial light modulator both in phase and in amplitude. Nearly chirp-free 2.2-ps optical Gaussian pulse and 0.73-ps optical Nyquist pulse with a repetition rate of 25 GHz are both achieved in simulation. The scheme also has a certain tolerance to phase quantization error of the spatial light modulator and power fluctuation.

Abstract:Ultra-short optical pulse sources with high repetition-rates are attractive for ultra-high speed optical time-division multiplexing fiber transmission systems. A phase and intensity hybrid modulation method using commercial LiNbO3 modulators was developed to reduce the cost of an ultra-short optical pulse source. A dispersion-compensating fiber was used for linear chirp compensation, and a comb-like dispersion profiled fiber for nonlinear compensation. After injection of the compressed pulse into a highly-nonlinear fiber, the pulse spectrum was broadened by self-phase modulation. An ultra-short optical pulse without any pedestal was generated after filtered with an optical band-pass filter (OBPF). A 1.2 ps Gaussian pulse and a 1.8 ps transformation- limited pulse were successfully obtained with OBPF bandwidth of 5 nm and 3 nm. Test results demonstrate that the pulse width is significantly influenced by the OBPF bandwidth.

Abstract:This paper studies that generation of 20 GHz ultra-short optical pulse series by 10 GHz DFB-LD with OTDM and pulse compression technology. A novel three-stage compression technology is brought forward, including compensation in normal dispersion fiber, compressing in anomalous dispersion fiber followed normal dispersion fiber and in comb-like dispersion profile fiber (CDPF). In the experiment, the compressed pulse of 3.3 ps pulse width was obtained and the total compress factor is 7.6. This technique is important for implementing an 80 Gb/s OTDM system

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-fiber monolithic laser source from a gain-managed nonlinear (GMN) fiber amplifier with a CFBG-based pre-compressor that generates high-contrast pulses with a repetition rate of 80 MHz, average power of 1.6 W, and pulse duration of sub-50 fs. The compressed pulse quality can be optimized by tuning the parameters of the seed pulses injected into the GMN amplifier by controlling the pump power of the fiber pre-amplifier. This compact and cost-effective laser system is a simplified design of the GMN amplification-based femtosecond fiber laser systems. With alignment-free characteristics in the amplifiers and clean compressed pulses, it is easy to assemble and use in applications such as multi-photon microscopy.

Abstract:An external-modulated optical Gaussian pulse generator based on optical filtering and chirp compression is proposed. The scheme works in linear regime using two phase modulators which does not require nonlinear compression and bias control. Theoretical and numerical analysis is first performed to elaborate the working principle and optimize the working condition of the pulse source. Using the analysis as a guideline, nearly chirp-free 25-GHz 3-ps Gaussian pulses are experimentally achieved over C band. The pulse source is further applied in 100-Gbit/s optical time-division multiplexing (OTDM) transmission system and the power penalty for 100-km transmission at a bit error rate (BER) of 10−9 is 0.6-dB, which demonstrates that the pulse generator is a simple, robust and practical pulse source for OTDM applications.

Abstract:A stable 10 GHz pedestal-free short pulse generation scheme consisting of cascaded commercial LiNbO3 modulators has been proposed and successfully demonstrated experimentally. Fiber-based pulse compression and reshaping stages have been utilized to obtain a 1.38 ps optical pulse train with very little pedestal and 132 fs timing jitter. Excellent performance of multiplexing from 10 Gbits/s to 160 Gbits/s using this method indicates good potential for application in ultrahigh-speed optical time-division-multiplexing systems.
