Abstract:Optical Nyquist pulse generation based on a time lens with subsequent optical filtering is proposed. A nearly chirp-free 10-GHz 8.1-ps Nyquist pulse generator is experimentally demonstrated. By inserting group velocity dispersion (GVD) between cascaded phase and amplitude modulators, 11 tones ultraflat optical frequency comb (OFC) of 10-GHz frequency spacing within 0.9 dB power variation is obtained. The quasi-rectangular shape spectrum is then filtered out with a tunable rectangular-shaped optical band-pass filter (OBPF) and the quasi-linear chirp is compensated by a segment of standard single mode fiber (SSMF). By changing the wavelength of the continuous wave (CW) light, nearly chirp-free Nyquist pulses over C band are obtained. Abstract:Multicolor optical Nyquist pulse generation based on self-phase modulation without line-by-line control is proposed and experimental demonstrated. By 1.4-ps nearly chirp-free optical Gaussian pulse pumping of a high nonlinearity fiber, a 25-GHz spacing, flat-topped supercontinuum (SC) over 17.8nm within 3.6dB power variation at a modest pump power of 21.8dBm is performed. As the phase of the central 90 tones is almost linear to the wavelength after dispersion compensation, spatial light modulator placed after SC for precise line-by-line control both of amplitude and phase can be replaced by conventional optical band-pass filter (OBPF). With an array of quasi-rectangular OBPFs, nearly transform-limited optical Nyquist pulses with a duty cycle of 5.5% on 4 wavelengths are achieved simultaneously.

Abstract:n ultrashort optical pulse generator based on nonlinear pulse shaping is proposed and demonstrated. With a spatial light modulator placed prior to a high nonlinearity fiber, (μ +λ ) -evolution strategy is introduced to dynamically adjust the transfer function of spatial light modulator both in phase and in amplitude. Nearly chirp-free 2.2-ps optical Gaussian pulse and 0.73-ps optical Nyquist pulse with a repetition rate of 25 GHz are both achieved in simulation. The scheme also has a certain tolerance to phase quantization error of the spatial light modulator and power fluctuation.

Abstract:An external-modulated optical Gaussian pulse generator based on optical filtering and chirp compression is proposed. The scheme works in linear regime using two phase modulators which does not require nonlinear compression and bias control. Theoretical and numerical analysis is first performed to elaborate the working principle and optimize the working condition of the pulse source. Using the analysis as a guideline, nearly chirp-free 25-GHz 3-ps Gaussian pulses are experimentally achieved over C band. The pulse source is further applied in 100-Gbit/s optical time-division multiplexing (OTDM) transmission system and the power penalty for 100-km transmission at a bit error rate (BER) of 10−9 is 0.6-dB, which demonstrates that the pulse generator is a simple, robust and practical pulse source for OTDM applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate a simple, robust, and cost-effective method of generating high-speed multiwavelength picosecond optical pulses. This method is based on chirp compression of phase-modulated light, followed by nonlinear pulse compression and reshaping with a double-side Mamyshev reshaper. We show that this method becomes power efficient when the repetition rate is increased to 25 GHz. Wavelength-tunable optical pulses with a repetition rate of 25 GHz and pulse width of ∼2 ps, which can be temporally multiplexed to 100 GHz, are experimentally obtained over a large spectral range with moderate electrical and optical power. Simultaneous pulse generation on four wavelengths is demonstrated.

Abstract:We describe a system for generating frequency-chirped and amplitude-shaped pulses on time scales from sub-nanosecond to ten nanoseconds. The system starts with cw diode-laser light at 780 nm and utilizes fiber-based electro-optical phase and intensity modulators, driven by an arbitrary waveform generator, to generate the shaped pulses. These pulses are subsequently amplified to several hundred mW with a tapered amplifier in a delayed double-pass configuration. Frequency chirps up to 5 GHz in 2 ns and pulse widths as short as 0.15 ns have been realized.

Abstract:A self-starting optoelectronic oscillator that employs a diverging time lens and a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) in a fiber-extended cavity to generate a multiwavelength ultrashort pulse train is demonstrated. The switching window formed by the MZM is narrowed by the use of a diverging time lens, which is a phase modulator in our study. A wavelength assignment scheme is deployed to simultaneously suppress the pedestals of pulses on different wavelengths. A detailed analysis is given, and the results are presented by experiment. We have generated 25 GHz optical pulses simultaneously on four wavelengths as a proof-of-concept demonstration. The pulse width of the optical pulse, the phase noise, and the timing jitter performance of the generated microwave signal are experimentally measured. Abstract: We present a method of producing single attosecond pulses by high-order harmonic generation with multi-cycle nonlinear chirped driver laser pulses. The symmetry of the laser feld in several optical cycles near the pulse center is dramatically broken, and then the photons which cover a much broad spectrum burst almost only in one optical cycle. So an ultra-broad continuum spectrum appears in the high order harmonic spectrum, from which an isolated sub-50 attosecond pulse could be obtained. The results are almost independent of the length and chirp form of the driver laser pulse.

Abstract:A kind of ultra-short optical pulse source based on commercial LiNbO_3 modulators is proposed.After phase and intensity hybrid modulation of a continuous-wave light,a dispersion-compensating fiber(DCF) and a comb-like dispersion profiled fiber(CDPF) were used for linear chirp compensation and nonlinear pulse compression of the generated optical pulse,respectively.The compressed pulse was then injected to a highly-nonlinear fiber(HNLF) and the pulse spectrum was broadened by self-phase modulation(SPM).After filtering with an optical band-pass filter(OBPF),an ultra-short optical pulse without any pedestal was generated.A 1.8ps transform-limited ultrashort pulse with no pedestal is obtained.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a simple and robust short pulse source based on chirp compression scheme and Mamyshev 2R regenerator. Pedestal-free optical pulse with repetition rate of 25 GHz, FWHM of 1.33 ps and RMS timing jitter of 112.81fs (100-Hz~10-MHz) is generated experimentally. Moreover, it is successfully applied to a 200-Gbit/s OTDM system by multiplexing in time domain.

Abstract:Based on the heterodyne beating between the pre-chirped optical pulse and the continuous wave (CW) light in a wideband photodetector (PD), linearly chirped microwave pulse with time duration of 3.2ns and bandwidth of 33GHz, which yields a large time-bandwidth product (TBWP) of 106 and high compression ratio of 160, is generated in our experiment. Dispersion compensation fiber (DCF) with uniform response across broad bandwidth is used for providing the original linear chirp in our method, which shows the promise to generate linearly chirped microwave pulse with bandwidth of up to THz. The flexibility of the center frequency and the stability of the time-frequency performance are demonstrated by generating different types of linearly chirped microwave pulses. The range resolution of our generated microwave pulse is also verified by off-line processing.

Abstract:Integrated femtosecond pulse and frequency comb sources are critical components for a wide range of applications, including optical atomic clocks1, microwave photonics2, spectroscopy3, optical wave synthesis4, frequency conversion5, communications6, lidar7, optical computing8 and astronomy9. The leading approaches for on-chip pulse generation rely on mode-locking inside microresonators with either third-order nonlinearity10 or with semiconductor gain11,12. These approaches, however, are limited in noise performance, wavelength and repetition rate tunability 10,13. Alternatively, subpicosecond pulses can be synthesized without mode-locking, by modulating a continuous-wave single-frequency laser using electro-optic modulators1,14-17. Here we demonstrate a chip-scale femtosecond pulse source implemented on an integrated lithium niobate photonic platform18, using cascaded low-loss electro-optic amplitude and phase modulators and chirped Bragg grating, forming a time-lens system19. The device is driven by a continuous-wave distributed feedback laser chip and controlled by a single continuous-wave microwave source without the need for any stabilization or locking. We measure femtosecond pulse trains (520-femtosecond duration) with a 30-gigahertz repetition rate, flat-top optical spectra with a 10-decibel optical bandwidth of 12.6 nanometres, individual comb-line powers above 0.1 milliwatts, and pulse energies of 0.54 picojoules. Our results represent a tunable, robust and low-cost integrated pulsed light source with continuous-wave-to-pulse conversion efficiencies an order of magnitude higher than those achieved with previous integrated sources. Our pulse generator may find applications in fields such as ultrafast optical measurement19,20 or networks of distributed quantum computers21,22.

Abstract:A robust, cost-effective external-modulated ultra-short pulse generator based on chirp compression and Mamyshev reshaper is simulated numerically and demonstrated experimentally. We investigated the quality of the pulse with numerical calculation, demonstrating that the pulsewidth and pulse pedestal can be significantly improved after optimization. The role of out-of-band suppression ratio of the optical filter in reducing the pulse pedestal is explained. Using the numerical analysis as a guideline, 25-GHz 1.9-ps pedestal-free nearly transform-limited optical pulse with an extinction ratio of 29dB and a root-mean square timing jitter of 120fs (100Hz to 10MHz) is experimentally generated. The pulse source is then successfully applied in 100-Gb/s and 200-Gb/s optical time-division multiplexing (OTDM) system with 100-km transmission, which is a strong proof that such pulse generator is a simple, practical, low-cost, power efficient solution for OTDM applications.
