Abstract:An external-modulated optical Gaussian pulse generator based on optical filtering and chirp compression is proposed. The scheme works in linear regime using two phase modulators which does not require nonlinear compression and bias control. Theoretical and numerical analysis is first performed to elaborate the working principle and optimize the working condition of the pulse source. Using the analysis as a guideline, nearly chirp-free 25-GHz 3-ps Gaussian pulses are experimentally achieved over C band. The pulse source is further applied in 100-Gbit/s optical time-division multiplexing (OTDM) transmission system and the power penalty for 100-km transmission at a bit error rate (BER) of 10−9 is 0.6-dB, which demonstrates that the pulse generator is a simple, robust and practical pulse source for OTDM applications.

Abstract:A dual-wavelength optical Gaussian pulse generation scheme based on a single-driven dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator with subsequent Mamyshev reshaping is proposed. Experimental results show that nearly chirp-free Gaussian pulses with a full width at half maximum of 2.7-ps and a repetition rate of 25-GHz on 2 wavelengths are achieved simultaneously. By changing the central wavelengths of the continuous wave light and the optical bandpass filter, nearly transform-limited optical Gaussian pulses are obtained over the C-band. The pulse source is further employed in a 100-Gbit/s on-off keying optical time division multiplexing transmission system. Abstract:Optical Nyquist pulse generation based on a time lens with subsequent optical filtering is proposed. A nearly chirp-free 10-GHz 8.1-ps Nyquist pulse generator is experimentally demonstrated. By inserting group velocity dispersion (GVD) between cascaded phase and amplitude modulators, 11 tones ultraflat optical frequency comb (OFC) of 10-GHz frequency spacing within 0.9 dB power variation is obtained. The quasi-rectangular shape spectrum is then filtered out with a tunable rectangular-shaped optical band-pass filter (OBPF) and the quasi-linear chirp is compensated by a segment of standard single mode fiber (SSMF). By changing the wavelength of the continuous wave (CW) light, nearly chirp-free Nyquist pulses over C band are obtained. Furthermore, simultaneous dual-wavelength pulse generation is also demonstrated. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Multicolor optical Nyquist pulse generation based on self-phase modulation without line-by-line control is proposed and experimental demonstrated. By 1.4-ps nearly chirp-free optical Gaussian pulse pumping of a high nonlinearity fiber, a 25-GHz spacing, flat-topped supercontinuum (SC) over 17.8nm within 3.6dB power variation at a modest pump power of 21.8dBm is performed. As the phase of the central 90 tones is almost linear to the wavelength after dispersion compensation, spatial light modulator placed after SC for precise line-by-line control both of amplitude and phase can be replaced by conventional optical band-pass filter (OBPF). With an array of quasi-rectangular OBPFs, nearly transform-limited optical Nyquist pulses with a duty cycle of 5.5% on 4 wavelengths are achieved simultaneously.

Abstract:Wavelength conversion and five-channel multicasting for 20 Gbit/s quadrature phase-shift keying signals have been experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide with digital coherent detection. The eye diagrams and constellation diagrams of the converted and multicasting idlers are successfully observed. Moreover, the bit-error rates (BERs) of the generated idlers are measured and the power penalties are all less than 0.7 dB at a BER of 3×10(-3).

Abstract:An optical pulse generation scheme based on an ultra-short chirped seed pulse generator followed by a dual-stage fiber-based nonlinear pulse processing stage is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. After phase modulation and linear-chirp compensation, optical seed pulse with a duty cycle of 9.8% and an obvious pedestal is obtained. By soliton compression and Mamyshev reshaping, a pedestal-free optical pulse with a duty cycle of 2% and an extinction ratio of 27 dB is achieved. The optical pulse source is further applied in a 16 x 25-Gb/s on-off keying optical time-division multiplexing transmitter. (C) 2018 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We demonstrate a simple, robust, and cost-effective method of generating high-speed multiwavelength picosecond optical pulses. This method is based on chirp compression of phase-modulated light, followed by nonlinear pulse compression and reshaping with a double-side Mamyshev reshaper. We show that this method becomes power efficient when the repetition rate is increased to 25 GHz. Wavelength-tunable optical pulses with a repetition rate of 25 GHz and pulse width of ∼2 ps, which can be temporally multiplexed to 100 GHz, are experimentally obtained over a large spectral range with moderate electrical and optical power. Simultaneous pulse generation on four wavelengths is demonstrated.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a photonic scheme of generating phase-coded signals in the terahertz (THz) band, based on an optical frequency combs (OFC) and optical heterodyne. In the proposed scheme, the optical modulation is implemented by using a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM), which is simultaneously driven by a radio frequency and a phase-coding sequence to ensure the stability. In the experiment, a 13-bit Barker-code phase-coded THz signal centered at 357 GHz is successfully generated with a record coding rate of up to 15 Gbit/s, which can potentially enable a range resolution of 1.57 cm. This work, for the first time to our knowledge, reveals the high potential of phase-coded THz signals in high resolution pulse compression radar.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel synthesizing method for high-speed 8-ary quadratic-amplitude modulation (QAM) optical signal generation using commercial optical modulators with binary electrical driving signals. Using this method, we successfully generated 114-Gb/s pulse-duration modulation (PDM)-8QAM optical signals. Intradyne detection of PDM-8QAM optical signals with robust blind polarization demultiplexing has been demonstrated by using a new cascaded multimodulus equalization algorithm. With return-to-zero-shaped PDM-8QAM modulation and the proposed blind polarization demultiplexing algorithm, we demonstrate transmission of a record 32-Tb/s fiber capacity (320 × 114 Gb/s) over 580 km of ultralow-loss single-mode fiber-28 fiber by utilizing C+L-band erbium-doped fiber-amplifier-only optical amplification and single-ended coherent detection technique at an information spectral efficiency of 4.0 bit/s·Hz.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate up to 260-GBaud single-wavelength coherent transmission by employing an optical transmitter based on two wide-bandwidth devices: a novel 260-GS/s arbitrary waveform generator with a 10-dB bandwidth of 90-GHz and a thin-film Lithium Niobate I/Q modulator with a 3-dB bandwidth of 110-GHz. We first assess the performance of our high symbol rate transmitter for generating spectrally efficient Nyquist multilevel modulation format signals at symbol rates up to 210-GBaud with >1.4-Tbps achievable information rates and by using linear digital signal processing only. We achieve up to 1.84-Tbps at 185-GBaud using PCS-64QAM, highlighting the linear behavior of our transmitter for high symbol rate Nyquist signaling. We then switch to dual-polarization QPSK coherent transmission and further increase the symbol rate up to 260-GBaud. Without using nonlinear digital-signal-processing nor advanced inter-symbol-interference mitigation techniques, we successfully transmit 260-GBaud QPSK at 800-Gbps net rate over 100-km of standard single mode fiber.

Abstract:This paper studies that generation of 20 GHz ultra-short optical pulse series by 10 GHz DFB-LD with OTDM and pulse compression technology. A novel three-stage compression technology is brought forward, including compensation in normal dispersion fiber, compressing in anomalous dispersion fiber followed normal dispersion fiber and in comb-like dispersion profile fiber (CDPF). In the experiment, the compressed pulse of 3.3 ps pulse width was obtained and the total compress factor is 7.6. This technique is important for implementing an 80 Gb/s OTDM system

Abstract:Transmission of 3.5ps optical pulses over 100 km standard fiber was demonstrated by employing phase conjugation in a semiconductor optical amplifier to compensate the chromatic dispersion. The pulses were broadened to 5 ps after transmission, which confirms the applicability of this technique to ultra high bit rate system beyond 40 Gb/s.

Abstract:A stable 10 GHz pedestal-free short pulse generation scheme consisting of cascaded commercial LiNbO3 modulators has been proposed and successfully demonstrated experimentally. Fiber-based pulse compression and reshaping stages have been utilized to obtain a 1.38 ps optical pulse train with very little pedestal and 132 fs timing jitter. Excellent performance of multiplexing from 10 Gbits/s to 160 Gbits/s using this method indicates good potential for application in ultrahigh-speed optical time-division-multiplexing systems.
