Abstract:n ultrashort optical pulse generator based on nonlinear pulse shaping is proposed and demonstrated. With a spatial light modulator placed prior to a high nonlinearity fiber, (μ +λ ) -evolution strategy is introduced to dynamically adjust the transfer function of spatial light modulator both in phase and in amplitude. Nearly chirp-free 2.2-ps optical Gaussian pulse and 0.73-ps optical Nyquist pulse with a repetition rate of 25 GHz are both achieved in simulation. The scheme also has a certain tolerance to phase quantization error of the spatial light modulator and power fluctuation.

Abstract:An external-modulated optical Gaussian pulse generator based on optical filtering and chirp compression is proposed. The scheme works in linear regime using two phase modulators which does not require nonlinear compression and bias control. Theoretical and numerical analysis is first performed to elaborate the working principle and optimize the working condition of the pulse source. Using the analysis as a guideline, nearly chirp-free 25-GHz 3-ps Gaussian pulses are experimentally achieved over C band. The pulse source is further applied in 100-Gbit/s optical time-division multiplexing (OTDM) transmission system and the power penalty for 100-km transmission at a bit error rate (BER) of 10−9 is 0.6-dB, which demonstrates that the pulse generator is a simple, robust and practical pulse source for OTDM applications.

Abstract:Multicolor optical Nyquist pulse generation based on self-phase modulation without line-by-line control is proposed and experimental demonstrated. By 1.4-ps nearly chirp-free optical Gaussian pulse pumping of a high nonlinearity fiber, a 25-GHz spacing, flat-topped supercontinuum (SC) over 17.8nm within 3.6dB power variation at a modest pump power of 21.8dBm is performed. As the phase of the central 90 tones is almost linear to the wavelength after dispersion compensation, spatial light modulator placed after SC for precise line-by-line control both of amplitude and phase can be replaced by conventional optical band-pass filter (OBPF). With an array of quasi-rectangular OBPFs, nearly transform-limited optical Nyquist pulses with a duty cycle of 5.5% on 4 wavelengths are achieved simultaneously.

Abstract:A dual-wavelength optical Gaussian pulse generation scheme based on a single-driven dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator with subsequent Mamyshev reshaping is proposed. Experimental results show that nearly chirp-free Gaussian pulses with a full width at half maximum of 2.7-ps and a repetition rate of 25-GHz on 2 wavelengths are achieved simultaneously. By changing the central wavelengths of the continuous wave light and the optical bandpass filter, nearly transform-limited optical Gaussian pulses are obtained over the C-band. The pulse source is further employed in a 100-Gbit/s on-off keying optical time division multiplexing transmission system. Abstract:An ultrashort 10-GHz pulse generation scheme was successfully demonstrated using a bulk mate- rial InGaAsP electroabsorption modulator to generate the seed pulse. A self-phase modulation-based re- shaper was used after the adiabatic soliton compression in a comb-like dispersion profiled fiber. Experi- ments and simulations confirm that the reshaper effectively removes the pulse pedestal and improves the pulse extinction ratio. As a result, the 10-GHz pulse had no pedestal, a high extinction ratio, and a pulse width of only 1.4 ps.

Abstract:A robust, cost-effective external-modulated ultra-short pulse generator based on chirp compression and Mamyshev reshaper is simulated numerically and demonstrated experimentally. We investigated the quality of the pulse with numerical calculation, demonstrating that the pulsewidth and pulse pedestal can be significantly improved after optimization. The role of out-of-band suppression ratio of the optical filter in reducing the pulse pedestal is explained. Using the numerical analysis as a guideline, 25-GHz 1.9-ps pedestal-free nearly transform-limited optical pulse with an extinction ratio of 29dB and a root-mean square timing jitter of 120fs (100Hz to 10MHz) is experimentally generated. The pulse source is then successfully applied in 100-Gb/s and 200-Gb/s optical time-division multiplexing (OTDM) system with 100-km transmission, which is a strong proof that such pulse generator is a simple, practical, low-cost, power efficient solution for OTDM applications.

Abstract:Direct generation of ultrashort, transform-limited pulses in a laser resonator is observed theoretically and experimentally. This constitutes a new type of ultrashort pulse generation in mode-locked lasers: in contrast to the well-known solitons (hyperbolic secant like), dispersion-managed solitons (Gaussian-like), and parabolic pulses plus external compression, ultrashort pulse solutions to the nonlinear wave equations that describe pulse evolution in the laser cavity are observed. Stable ultrashort, transform-limited pulses exist with optical spectrum broader than the gain bandwidth of the amplifier, and this has practical application for other lasers.

Abstract:An optical pulse generation scheme based on an ultra-short chirped seed pulse generator followed by a dual-stage fiber-based nonlinear pulse processing stage is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. After phase modulation and linear-chirp compensation, optical seed pulse with a duty cycle of 9.8% and an obvious pedestal is obtained. By soliton compression and Mamyshev reshaping, a pedestal-free optical pulse with a duty cycle of 2% and an extinction ratio of 27 dB is achieved. Abstract:We demonstrate a simple, robust, and cost-effective method of generating high-speed multiwavelength picosecond optical pulses. This method is based on chirp compression of phase-modulated light, followed by nonlinear pulse compression and reshaping with a double-side Mamyshev reshaper. We show that this method becomes power efficient when the repetition rate is increased to 25 GHz. Wavelength-tunable optical pulses with a repetition rate of 25 GHz and pulse width of ∼2 ps, which can be temporally multiplexed to 100 GHz, are experimentally obtained over a large spectral range with moderate electrical and optical power. Simultaneous pulse generation on four wavelengths is demonstrated.

Abstract:Delay-controlled two-color, few-cycle pulses are powerful tools for ultrafast nonlinear optics. In this Letter, 35-fs, 800 nm pulses were injected into a noble-gas-filled hollow-core fiber to obtain over-octave spectra (450–1000 nm) and were divided into two parts for dispersion management by a Mach–Zehnder–type interferometer. Two few-cycle pulses with pulse widths of 9.3 and 4.5 fs were generated in the long-wavelength side and the short-wavelength side, respectively. The temporal profiles were measured as the function of the different delay between the two pulses. The shortest 3.6 fs, 0.75 mJ near-single-cycle pulses were synthesized at an optimal delay. The delay-controlled high-harmonic generation in MgO was experimentally demonstrated leading to twofold enhancement of high-order harmonic (HH) yields at 10.3 eV and the extension of HH frequency under time-delay modulation. This method provides an extensive way for manipulating delay-controlled multi-color pulses, which can be used for controlling ionization dynamics in extreme nonlinear optics. We believe that it will be a powerful tool for ultrafast science.

Abstract:Ultra-short optical pulse sources with high repetition-rates are attractive for ultra-high speed optical time-division multiplexing fiber transmission systems. A phase and intensity hybrid modulation method using commercial LiNbO3 modulators was developed to reduce the cost of an ultra-short optical pulse source. A dispersion-compensating fiber was used for linear chirp compensation, and a comb-like dispersion profiled fiber for nonlinear compensation. After injection of the compressed pulse into a highly-nonlinear fiber, the pulse spectrum was broadened by self-phase modulation. An ultra-short optical pulse without any pedestal was generated after filtered with an optical band-pass filter (OBPF). A 1.2 ps Gaussian pulse and a 1.8 ps transformation- limited pulse were successfully obtained with OBPF bandwidth of 5 nm and 3 nm. Test results demonstrate that the pulse width is significantly influenced by the OBPF bandwidth.

Abstract:A kind of ultra-short optical pulse source based on commercial LiNbO_3 modulators is proposed.After phase and intensity hybrid modulation of a continuous-wave light,a dispersion-compensating fiber(DCF) and a comb-like dispersion profiled fiber(CDPF) were used for linear chirp compensation and nonlinear pulse compression of the generated optical pulse,respectively.The compressed pulse was then injected to a highly-nonlinear fiber(HNLF) and the pulse spectrum was broadened by self-phase modulation(SPM).After filtering with an optical band-pass filter(OBPF),an ultra-short optical pulse without any pedestal was generated.A 1.8ps transform-limited ultrashort pulse with no pedestal is obtained.

Abstract:We describe a system for generating frequency-chirped and amplitude-shaped pulses on time scales from sub-nanosecond to ten nanoseconds. The system starts with cw diode-laser light at 780 nm and utilizes fiber-based electro-optical phase and intensity modulators, driven by an arbitrary waveform generator, to generate the shaped pulses. These pulses are subsequently amplified to several hundred mW with a tapered amplifier in a delayed double-pass configuration. Frequency chirps up to 5 GHz in 2 ns and pulse widths as short as 0.15 ns have been realized.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a simple method to generate ultra-wideband (UWB) pulses with different pulse shape, based on incoherent optical arbitrary waveform generation. Pulses with opposite polarity are obtained using the phase-modulator-based dual-input intensity modulator. Monocycle, doublet and high-order UWB pulses meeting the FCC regulation are generated. Both temporal waveform and power spectral of the signal generated are evaluated.
