Abstract:We demonstrated a fully fiber-integrated widely tunable picosecond optical parametric oscillator based on highly nonlinear fiber. The ring cavity with a 50 m highly nonlinear fiber was synchronously pumped with a picosecond mode-locked fiber laser. The tuning range was from 1413 to 1543 nm and from 1573 to 1695 nm, which was as wide as 250 nm. A high-quality pulse was generated with a pulse width narrower than that of the pump.

Abstract:A synchronously pumped picosecond fiber-optical parametric oscillator was demonstrated with fixed pump wavelength and with a 50-m highly nonlinear dispersion-shifted fiber as parametric gain medium. Time-dispersion-tuning offered a continuously wavelength tuning range as wide as 150 nm from 1413 to 1478 nm and from 1610 to 1695 nm with a pulsewidth of 10 ps.

Abstract:We demonstrate a picosecond fiber-optical parametric oscillator with an ultrawide tuning range pumped by a relatively low-cost intensity-modulated pump. The tuning range of the oscillator is from 1320 to 1520 nm and from 1580 to 1820 nm, which is as wide as 440 nm, with a wavelength span of 500 nm. A 40-m dispersion-shifted fiber is employed inside a cavity as the parametric gain medium. In the wavelength region from 1320 to 1395 nm and from 1720 to 1820 nm, the linewidth of the sideband is less than 1 nm without the use of any wavelength-selective element inside the cavity. Pulses with pulsewidths from 7 to 17 ps are generated.

Abstract:We first demonstrate a wideband generation of picosecond pulse using fiber optical parametric amplifier (FOPA). High quality pulse is generated at 85 nm away from the pump with pulsewidth narrower than that of the pump. We then explore fiber optical parametric oscillator (FOPO) configuration which has the advantage of eliminating the need of seeding laser, leading to a potentially wider wavelength tunability and flexibility. The tuning range of the FOPO is from 1511 nm to 1541 nm and from 1583 nm to 1613 nm, which is as wide as 60 nm, with wavelength span of over 100 nm. Nearly-transform-limited sub-picosecond pulses are generated by this technique.

Abstract:We report the experimental demonstration of a fully fiber-integrated picosecond optical parametric oscillator. The gain is provided by a 50-meters homemade photonic crystal fiber in the ring cavity. A time-dispersion-tuned technique is used to allow the oscillator to select the oscillating wavelength adaptively and synchronize with the pump pulse train. The output wavelength of the oscillator can be continuously tuned from 988 to 1046 nm and from 1085 to 1151 nm by adjusting the pump wavelength and the time-dispersion-tuned technique simultaneously. Abstract:We report on a fully fiber-integrated widely tunable optical parametric oscillator based on a photonic crystal fiber pumped by a picosecond ytterbium-doped fiber laser. The output wavelength of the oscillator can be continuously tuned from 898 to 1047 nm and from 1086 to 1277 nm, which is as wide as 340 nm. In particular, a larger Raman gain peak is simultaneously observed when the pump wavelength is far from the zero-dispersion wavelength in the normal-dispersion regime. The bandwidth of the output of the oscillator can be tuned by slightly adjusting the pump power.

Abstract:We demonstrate a dispersion-tuned fiber optical parametric oscillator (FOPO)-based swept source with a sweep rate of 40 kHz and a wavelength tuning range of 109 nm around 1550 nm. The cumulative speed exceeds 4,000,000 nm/s. The FOPO is pumped by a sinusoidally modulated pump, which is driven by a clock sweeping linearly from 1 to 1.0006 GHz. A spool of dispersion-compensating fiber is added inside the cavity to perform dispersion tuning. The instantaneous linewidth is 0.8 nm without the use of any wavelength selective element inside the cavity. 1 GHz pulses with pulse width of 150 ps are generated.

Abstract:We presented a fiber optical parametric oscillator generating tunable femtosecond pulses based on four-wave mixing. By using a photonic crystal fiber as the parametric gain and a single mode fiber to select the oscillating wavelength via dispersion filtering, output pulses with a pulse duration of 350 fs, and spectral bandwidth of 5.8 nm were obtained. The wavelength of the output pulses could be tuned from 965 to 1025 nm by adjusting the dispersion filtering. This setup provides a simple and flexible light source for biomedical applications and tunable infrared pulse generation through nonlinear frequency conversion.

Abstract:The phase-matching condition in a fiber is discussed. A balance among the different orders of fiber dispersion can be found to achieve a widely tuning modulation instability gain for pumping around the normal dispersion regime. Three coupled nonlinear wave equations are used to simulate the femtosecond fiber optical parametric oscillator. The numerical results show that, through appropriate choice of dispersion, femtosecond pulses with a 180-nm tunable range can be generated when pump wavelength near a fiber’s zero-dispersion wavelength is tuned only 7nm. Further tuning is limited by the walk-off between the pump and the signal pulses.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, the use of optical fiber for optical parametric chirped pulse amplification to amplify subpicosecond pulses. We use this system to amplify a subpicosecond signal at 1595 nm generated by a fiber-optical parametric oscillator. The 750-fs signal from the oscillator output is stretched to 40 ps, amplified by an all-fiber optical parametric amplifier and then compressed to 808 fs. The peak power of the signal is amplified from 93 mW to 10 W.

Abstract:We report a fiber optical parametric amplifier (FOPA) based on a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with optimized dispersion and nonlinear properties pumped by a mode-locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser. Wavelength-tunable parametric gain bands can be obtained by adjusting the pump wavelength from the anomalous to the normal dispersion regime. By utilizing the PCF-based FOPA, weak signals located in the parametric gain bands can be amplified. Wavelength-tunable picosecond pulses can be generated at the signal and idler wavelengths. A 58-dB maximum gain and a wide gain bandwidth from 999 to 1139 nm have been achieved by pumping near the zero-dispersion wavelength. When the FOPA is pumped at 1062.5 nm in the normal dispersion regime of the PCF, the 974-nm weak continuous-wave signal is significantly amplified, and the idler pulse is generated at 1168 nm.

Abstract:A wavelength-swept fiber optical parametric oscillator (FOPO) based on dispersion tuning technology at wavelength around 1 mu m is demonstrated. A continuous wave single-longitudinal-mode ytterbium doped fiber laser with a line-width of 0.05 nm is modulated through a LiNbO3 Mach-Zehnder modulator to be a pulsed source with variable repetition rate. The pulsed source is amplified with a two-stage ytterbium doped fiber amplifier (YDFA) to a mediate power and a high power YDFA to peak power higher than 40 W. And a homemade 50-m photonic crystal fiber (PCF) which provides the optical parametric gain is pumped by the pulsed source. The optical modulator is driven by a frequency-swept electrical clock signal with frequency ranges from 107.24 MHz to 107.31 MHz. Thus the FOPO generates a wavelength-swept light source with a range of 80 nm centered at 1065.10 nm. Through careful customizing the sweeping rate of the driving clock signal, the sweeping rate of the parametric oscillator can be up to 10 kHz, which is limited by currently used electrical sweeping source. The generated pulses train are with pulse width of about 110 ps. For the electrical scan is used instead of the traditional mechanical scanning method in conventional wavelength-swept sources, it performs better stability under prolonged operation. The wavelength-swept FOPO is potential to be applied in OCT systems for its good stability and advantaged wavelength band.

Abstract:We report a tunable optical pulse expander capable of producing narrowband long pulses, starting from a femtosecond optical parametric amplifier (OPA), which is based on chirp-matched frequency mixing technique. The device delivers nJ-level pulses with bandwidth of ~0.1 nm and duration of ~45 ps within its tuning range from 1000 nm to 1090 nm. The combination of a femtosecond OPA and a pulse expander may provide synchronized and both tunable femtosecond and tens of picoseconds pulses simultaneously, which should be promising in the applications where both temporal and spectral resolutions are needed.

Abstract:This paper reports on a high-repetition-rate dual signal-wave (DSW) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) operating at the 1.5μm band with tunable wavelength intervals from 2.5nm to 69.1nm. Two periodically poled crystals, a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) with multiple gratings and a single grating MgO-doped PPLN (PPMgOLN), are cascaded in the same OPO cavity to generate dual signal-waves by using quasi-phase-matched (QPM) technique. The pump source was a Q-switched diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser operating at 50kHz. At an incident pump power of 3W, an average output power of 169.6mW at 1489.2nm and 1558.3nm has been achieved.

Abstract:An all-fiber parametric oscillator which is pumped by a mode-locked Er-doped picosecond fiber laser is proposed for the generation of multi-wavelength picosecond lasing pulses. The length of a fiber-coupled optical delay line is adjusted so that the first signal wavelength is tuned closer to the pump wavelength to facilitate the generation of more lasing wavelengths. 10 orders of cascaded four-wave-mixing processes are achieved and picosecond pulses at 17 lasing wavelengths from 1264.7 nm to 1842.4 nm are demonstrated. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest number of lasing wavelengths reported so far from a fiber optical parametric oscillator pumped with an ultrashort-pulse laser.
