Abstract:We demonstrate a dispersion-tuned fiber optical parametric oscillator (FOPO)-based swept source with a sweep rate of 40 kHz and a wavelength tuning range of 109 nm around 1550 nm. The cumulative speed exceeds 4,000,000 nm/s. The FOPO is pumped by a sinusoidally modulated pump, which is driven by a clock sweeping linearly from 1 to 1.0006 GHz. A spool of dispersion-compensating fiber is added inside the cavity to perform dispersion tuning. The instantaneous linewidth is 0.8 nm without the use of any wavelength selective element inside the cavity. 1 GHz pulses with pulse width of 150 ps are generated.

Abstract:A wavelength-swept fiber optical parametric oscillator (FOPO) based on dispersion tuning technology at wavelength around 1 mu m is demonstrated. A continuous wave single-longitudinal-mode ytterbium doped fiber laser with a line-width of 0.05 nm is modulated through a LiNbO3 Mach-Zehnder modulator to be a pulsed source with variable repetition rate. The pulsed source is amplified with a two-stage ytterbium doped fiber amplifier (YDFA) to a mediate power and a high power YDFA to peak power higher than 40 W. And a homemade 50-m photonic crystal fiber (PCF) which provides the optical parametric gain is pumped by the pulsed source. The optical modulator is driven by a frequency-swept electrical clock signal with frequency ranges from 107.24 MHz to 107.31 MHz. Thus the FOPO generates a wavelength-swept light source with a range of 80 nm centered at 1065.10 nm. Through careful customizing the sweeping rate of the driving clock signal, the sweeping rate of the parametric oscillator can be up to 10 kHz, which is limited by currently used electrical sweeping source. The generated pulses train are with pulse width of about 110 ps. For the electrical scan is used instead of the traditional mechanical scanning method in conventional wavelength-swept sources, it performs better stability under prolonged operation. The wavelength-swept FOPO is potential to be applied in OCT systems for its good stability and advantaged wavelength band.

Abstract:We demonstrated a fully fiber-integrated widely tunable picosecond optical parametric oscillator based on highly nonlinear fiber. The ring cavity with a 50 m highly nonlinear fiber was synchronously pumped with a picosecond mode-locked fiber laser. The tuning range was from 1413 to 1543 nm and from 1573 to 1695 nm, which was as wide as 250 nm. A high-quality pulse was generated with a pulse width narrower than that of the pump.

Abstract:We propose a novel multi-wavelength fiber optical parametric oscillator (MW-FOPO) based on a ring cavity. A highly nonlinear fiber and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer formed by two 3-dB optical couplers are used as the gain medium and the comb filter, respectively. Multi-wavelength lasing of the MW-FOPO with an ultra-narrow wavelength spacing of about 0.08 nm is achieved. The output spectrum of the MW-FOPO covers a wavelength regime from 1510 nm to 1615 nm (for lasing wavelengths with the power that exceeds -60 dBm). The stability of the MW-FOPO is discussed and experimentally demonstrated. A comparison of the output spectra between the MW-FOPO and the multi-wavelength Erbium-doped fiber laser is also presented.

Abstract:A synchronously pumped picosecond fiber-optical parametric oscillator was demonstrated with fixed pump wavelength and with a 50-m highly nonlinear dispersion-shifted fiber as parametric gain medium. Abstract:We demonstrate a picosecond fiber-optical parametric oscillator with an ultrawide tuning range pumped by a relatively low-cost intensity-modulated pump. The tuning range of the oscillator is from 1320 to 1520 nm and from 1580 to 1820 nm, which is as wide as 440 nm, with a wavelength span of 500 nm. A 40-m dispersion-shifted fiber is employed inside a cavity as the parametric gain medium. In the wavelength region from 1320 to 1395 nm and from 1720 to 1820 nm, the linewidth of the sideband is less than 1 nm without the use of any wavelength-selective element inside the cavity. Pulses with pulsewidths from 7 to 17 ps are generated.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a frequency tunable optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on a spectral-subtraction-induced microwave photonic filter (MPF), which is implemented by a subtraction operation of transmission responses between two high-pass filters of different cutoff frequency. By changing the bandwidth of a tunable optical filter or the wavelengths of two laser sources, the central frequency of the synthesized single-pass MPF is shifted and the oscillation frequency of OEO can be tuned. In the experiment, frequency-tunable oscillation signals from 7.8 to 14.2 GHz at a step of ~ 1.25 GHz are generated and its performance is investigated.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a voltage-controlled frequency-tunable optoelectronic oscillator based on a dispersion-induced microwave photonic filter (MPF), which is implemented with a carrier phase-shifted double sideband modulation in a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM), a linear chirped fiber Bragg grating and a polarization multiplexed composite cavity. By simply adjusting the DC bias voltage of the DPMZM, the central frequency of the dispersion-induced MPF is shifted and the oscillation frequency of optoelectronic oscillator can be tuned. A detail theoretical analysis is provided, which is validated by a proof of concept experiment.

Abstract:A wideband frequency-tunable optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on a narrowband phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (PSFBG) and wavelength tuning of the laser is proposed and demonstrated. With assistance of an optical single-sideband modulator, the PSFBG with a narrow transmission peak acts like an equivalent high-Q microwave filter to select the oscillation frequency. Frequency tunability of the OEO can be simply realized by tuning the wavelength of a laser source. An X-band optoelectronic oscillating signal with frequency tunable at wide range from 8.4 to 11.8 GHz is generated and its performance is investigated in the experiment.

Abstract:The stable operation of a high-repetition-rate dispersion-tuned harmonically mode-locked fiber-optical parametric oscillator (FOPO) is demonstrated for the first time to the best of our knowledge. The experimental results match well with the theory. By introducing large cavity dispersion, the round-trip delay can vary with wavelength. Thus the cavity can be synchronized with the modulation frequency of an external clock passively. The FOPO can be tuned simply by adjusting the modulation frequency. A stable 10-GHz pulse train is obtained over 6-nm tuning range for each of the signal and idler.

Abstract:This paper reports on a high-repetition-rate dual signal-wave (DSW) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) operating at the 1.5μm band with tunable wavelength intervals from 2.5nm to 69.1nm. Two periodically poled crystals, a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) with multiple gratings and a single grating MgO-doped PPLN (PPMgOLN), are cascaded in the same OPO cavity to generate dual signal-waves by using quasi-phase-matched (QPM) technique. The pump source was a Q-switched diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser operating at 50kHz. At an incident pump power of 3W, an average output power of 169.6mW at 1489.2nm and 1558.3nm has been achieved.

Abstract:A square-waveform generator based on a fiber optical parametric oscillator (FOPO) is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The FOPO works fundamentally by extracting the longitudinal modes beating signal to drive the intracavity amplitude modulator. In order to broaden the longitudinal mode spacing, two sub-ring cavities with a short cavity length are used. The longitudinal modes are phase locked, which ensures the generated microwave signal with very low phase noise. By biasing the amplitude modulator, the even-order beating signals are suppressed, while the odd-order beating signals are enhanced. Thus, the FOPO is self-starting and can provide stable square-waveform output with the repetition rate of 1.133 GHz at the signal and idler simultaneously. It is tunable over 10 nm, which is only limited by the gain bandwidth of the fiber optical parametric amplifier of the current configuration.

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-fiber and continuously wavelength-swept fiber optical parametric oscillator (FOPO) based on dispersion tuning technology around 1 μm. The alignment-free FOPO is pumped by a pulse train light, driven by a frequency-swept electric pulse source with a repetition rate ranging from 107.24 MHz to 107.31 MHz. Thus, the FOPO demonstrates a wavelength-swept output with a sweeping range of 100 nm centered at 1065.10 nm. The sweeping rate can be improved up to 100 kHz, while the cumulative speed exceeds 1000 000 nm s−1. Since the electric scanning is used in an all-fiber setup instead of the traditional mechanical scanning method, it demonstrates better stability under prolonged operation, which is promising to be applied in biomedical imaging, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) systems and other applications.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a new approach to implement a wavelength-tunable ultrafast fiber laser source suitable for multiphoton microscopy. We employ fiber-optic nonlinearities to broaden a narrowband optical spectrum generated by an Yb-fiber laser system and then use optical bandpass filters to select the leftmost or rightmost spectral lobes from the broadened spectrum. Detailed numerical modeling shows that self-phase modulation dominates the spectral broadening, self-steepening tends to blue shift the broadened spectrum, and stimulated Raman scattering is minimal. We also find that optical wave breaking caused by fiber dispersion slows down the shift of the leftmost/rightmost spectral lobes and therefore limits the wavelength tuning range of the filtered spectra. We show both numerically and experimentally that shortening the fiber used for spectral broadening while increasing the input pulse energy can overcome this dispersion-induced limitation; as a result, the filtered spectral lobes have higher power, constituting a powerful and practical approach for energy scaling the resulting femtosecond sources. We use two commercially available photonic crystal fibers to verify the simulation results. More specific, use of 20-mm fiber NL-1050-ZERO-2 enables us to implement an Yb-fiber laser based ultrafast source, delivering femtosecond (70-120 fs) pulses tunable from 825 nm to 1210 nm with > 1 nJ pulse energy. Abstract:We first demonstrate a wideband generation of picosecond pulse using fiber optical parametric amplifier (FOPA). High quality pulse is generated at 85 nm away from the pump with pulsewidth narrower than that of the pump. We then explore fiber optical parametric oscillator (FOPO) configuration which has the advantage of eliminating the need of seeding laser, leading to a potentially wider wavelength tunability and flexibility. The tuning range of the FOPO is from 1511 nm to 1541 nm and from 1583 nm to 1613 nm, which is as wide as 60 nm, with wavelength span of over 100 nm. Nearly-transform-limited sub-picosecond pulses are generated by this technique.
