Abstract:We report a simple technique for the realization of fiber-based Fabry-Pérot microcavities with large Q/V values as well as high cavity-to-fiber coupling efficiencies. The open microcavity we demonstrate consists of a flat mirror and a concave mirror on the tip of a single mode optical fiber. Combining hydrofluoric acid chemical wet etching with CO2 laser reflow, we obtain a fiber-tip atomically smooth concave surface with a diameter of 4.7 μm determined by the fiber core size. The concave surface with a spherical profile is automatically aligned with the fiber core, which enables high cavity-to-fiber power coupling efficiency (higher than 90%) with an optimal fiber-tip mirror's radius of curvature based on numerical simulation results. After distributed-Bragg-reflector coating, we have realized a wavelength-tunable open microcavity with a quality factor Q exceeding 1000 and a mode volume V of 13.6 μm3, and laser emission is demonstrated from this microcavity.
Real-time Control of Micro/nanofiber Waist Diameter with Ultrahigh Accuracy and Precision

Abstract:We demonstrated real-time control of micro/nanofiber waist diameter during fiber pulling process with ultrahigh accuracy and precision. A 785 nm CW laser was coupled into SMF-28e fiber to excite high-order modes. During the fiber-pulling process, the cutoffs of high-order modes contributed to sudden transmission intensity drops. By accurately measuring the time interval between two drops, we could precisely determine the time to stop the pulling process based on a target diameter. Our experimental results showed that both the accuracy and precision of diameter control were within 5 nm for an expected taper diameter ranging from 800 nm to 1300 nm.

Abstract:We report on fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) high-quality (Q) whispering-gallery-mode microcavities by femtosecond laser micromachining. The main fabrication procedures include the formation of on-chip freestanding microdisk through selective material removal by femtosecond laser pulses, followed by surface smoothing processes (CO2 laser reflow for amorphous glass and focused ion beam (FIB) sidewall milling for crystalline materials) to improve the Q factors. Fused silica microcavities with 3D geometries are demonstrated with Q factors exceeding 106. A microcavity laser based on Nd:glass has been fabricated, showing a threshold as low as 69μW via free space continuous-wave optical excitation at the room temperature. CaF2 crystalline microcavities with Q factor of ~4.2×104 have also been demonstrated. This technique allows us to fabricate 3D high-Q microcavities in various transparent materials such as glass and crystals, which will benefit a broad spectrum of applications such as nonlinear optics, quantum optics, and bio-sensing.

Abstract:The transfer cavity is a very important frequency reference for laser stabilization and is widely used for applications such as precision measurements and laser cooling of ions or molecules. But the non-linear response of the piezoelectric ceramic transducer (PZT) in the Fabry-Perot cavity limits the performance of the laser stabilization. Thus, measuring and controlling such non-linearity is essential. Here we report an in situ, optical method to characterize this non-linearity by measuring the resonant signals of a dual-frequency laser. The differential measurement makes it insensitive to the laser and cavity drifts, while maintaining a very high sensitivity. It can be applied for various applications with PZTs, especially in an optical lab.

Abstract:An approach based on the multi-extrema-tracing technique for measuring the cavity length of fiber extrinsic Fabry-Perot sensors is proposed and demonstrated. The wavelength-scanning method is used to get the high-resolution central wavelength of the interference extrema with the calibration of the HCN gas cell. By deriving the interference order number of each interference extremum with little ambiguity through an improved linear fitting algorithm, the cavity length can be retrieved by tracing the wavelength of all extrema in the scanning wavelength range. The experimental results show that the interrogation resolution can reach 1 nm, which is demonstrated for a large dynamic range of cavity lengths from similar to 250 to similar to 3000 mu m. Abstract:Precise diameter control is critical for many optical micro/nanofiber (MNF) applications. We demonstrate real-time MNF diameter control with improved accuracy and precision. Different from earlier works, a white light source is applied to monitor the transmittance during fiber pulling process. Terminated directly by the transmission intensity drops that indicate the cutoff of TE01 mode at particular wavelengths, we achieve diameter control accuracy and precision as high as 2nm and 3nm, respectively. The diameter control range from 360 nm to 680 nm that is demonstrated in our experiment can be extended to several tens of micron by exciting other high order modes.

Abstract:Fabry-Perot micro-cavity resonator structures are directly wafer bonded. Their optical properties of reflectivity are measured using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and simulated theoretically using transfer matrix method. An exponential variation of optical thickness for multi-layers at the both sides of the bonding interface is constructed to analyze the effects of wafer-bonding on the micro-cavity structures. Results show that lower-temperature bonding is advantageous for the fabrication of high-optical quality structures. But a defect-blocking layer should be involved into the wafer-boned structures for the improvement of bonding quality when a higher annealing temperature is used.

Abstract:Fabry-Perot cavity (FPC) based on Fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) is an excellent candidate for fiber sensing and high-precision measurement. The advancement of the femtosecond laser micromachining technique provides more choices for the fabrication of FBGs-based FPCs. In this paper, we fabricate miniature FBGs-based FPCs, using the femtosecond laser line-by-line scanning writing technique for the first time. By this method, the FBGs can be limited to a specific area in the fiber core region. The grating length, position, and the distance between two successive FBGs can be conveniently controlled to achieve the desired transmission spectrum. For future applications in sensing, the temperature and strain responses of the fabricated FBGs-based FPCs were studied experimentally. This work provides a meaningful guidance for the fabrication and application of miniature FPCs based on FBGs.

Abstract:Fiber Fabry-Perot cavities, formed by micro-machined mirrors on the end-facets of optical fibers, are used in an increasing number of technical and scientific applications, where they typically require precise stabilization of their optical resonances. Here, we study two different approaches to construct fiber Fabry-Perot resonators and stabilize their length for experiments in cavity quantum electrodynamics with neutral atoms. A piezo-mechanically actuated cavity with feedback based on the Pound-Drever-Hall locking technique is compared to a novel rigid cavity design that makes use of the high passive stability of a monolithic cavity spacer and employs thermal self-locking and external temperature tuning. Furthermore, we present a general analysis of the mode matching problem in fiber Fabry-Perot cavities, which explains the asymmetry in their reflective line shapes and has important implications for the optimal alignment of the fiber resonators. Finally, we discuss the issue of fiber-generated background photons. We expect that our results contribute towards the integration of high-finesse fiber Fabry-Perot cavities into compact and robust quantum-enabled devices in the future.

Abstract:We present a method to engineer the frequency splitting of polarization eigenmodes in fiber Fabry-Perot (FFP) cavities. Using specific pattern of multiple CO$_2$ laser pulses, we machine paraboloidal micromirrors with controlled elliptical shape in a large range of radius of curvature. This method is versatile and can be used to produce cavities with maximized or near-zero polarization mode splitting. In addition, we realize dual-wavelength FFP cavities with finesse exceeding $40\,000$ at 780$\,$nm and at 1559$\,$nm in the telecom range. We provide direct evidence that the birefringent frequency splitting in FFP cavities is governed only by the geometrical shape of the mirrors, and that the astigmatism of the cavity modes needs to be taken into account for specific cavities.

Abstract:We report the development of a fiber-based, tunable optical cavity with open access. The cavity is of the Fabry-Perot type and is formed with miniature spherical mirrors positioned on the end of single- or multi-mode optical fibers by a transfer technique which involves lifting a high-quality mirror from a smooth convex substrate, either a ball lens or micro-lens. The cavities typically have a finesse of $\sim 1,000$ and a mode volume of 600 $\mu$m$^3$. We demonstrate the detection of small ensembles of cold Rb atoms guided through such a cavity on an atom chip.

Abstract:The efficacy of water vapor-saturated air as a treatment for horses with exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) was studied. Horses selected for study (n = 14) had grade 1 or greater hemorrhage in the trachea after a minimum of 4 breezes between 0.8 and 1 km, as determined by endoscopy. Nine horses were treated with water vapor-saturated air; 5 horses were not treated. When the mean and maximal EIPH scores from the pretreatment period were compared with the mean and maximal EIPH scores from the treatment period in both treated and nontreated groups, there was no significant difference between groups. There was a suggestion of a linear relationship between exercise speed and the mean EIPH score of the first 4 breezes in all 14 horses.

Abstract:We demonstrated a promising CO2 laser irradiation system based on an improved 2-D scanning technique. Such a system could be used to inscribe high-quality long period fiber gratings (LPFGs) with good reproducibility of grating inscription, which attributes to the fact that our system includes a CO2 laser with an excellent power stability of less than ±2% and a 3-D ultraprecision motorized translation stages with an excellent bidirectional repeatability value of 80 nm. Moreover, a control program with an easy-to-use operation interface was developed in our system so that a high-quality LPFG could be achieved as soon as grating parameters, such as grating pitch and number of grating periods, are entered, which has a widespread commercial value and prospects for development. Additionally, near mode fields of the CO2-laser-induced LPFG were observed and simulated to investigate mode coupling in the gratings.

Abstract:We present a fiber-based white-light interferometry system capable of nanoscale distance measurement and control. Our prototype contains two cleaved single mode fibers tightly clamped together. Using a supercontinuum white-light source, we can achieve distance control with a standard deviation of <4 nm. This method is potentially suitable for applications that require noncontact measurements or that involve highly deformable structures.

Abstract:This paper presents the design and characterization of a fiber Fabry–Perot interferometer (FFPI) acoustic wave detector with its Q point being stabilized actively. The relationship between the reflectivity of the F–P cavity facets and cavity length was theoretically analyzed, and high visibility of 100% was realized by optimized design of the F–P cavity. To prevent the drifting of the Q point, a new stabilization method by actively feedback controlling of the diode laser is proposed and demonstrated, indicating the method is simple and easy operating. Measurement shows that good tracing of Q point was effectively realized.

Abstract:We present a high-contrast extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (HCEFPI) with an in-fiber ellipsoidal cavity. The ellipsoidal air-microcavity is formed by splicing together a single-mode fiber and a photonic crystal fiber with the simple arc-discharge technique. The propagation loss in the cavity can be very low due to the confocal cavity and very short cavity. Experiments have shown that the HCEFPI has a fringe contrast of similar to 30 dB. Temperature insensitivity, high contrast, and high robustness make it appropriate for high-resolution and long-range sensing without temperature compensation.

Abstract:An in-fiber rectangular air Fabry-Perot (FP) strain sensor based on a high-precision fiber cutting platform (HFCP) is proposed. The HFCP consisting of a CCD notation system, a micro-displacement platform, and an optical fiber cleaver can be used to precisely control the length of FP cavity. The microcavity of FP (even only tens of microns) with smooth reflective surface can be realized easily by using this system. The FP structures with different cavity lengths have been fabricated in this paper. Simulation and experimental results prove that the shorter length the cavity has, the higher strain sensitivity and the larger free spectral range (FSR) the sensor obtains. The strain sensitivity and FSR of in-fiber rectangular air FP sensor with a cavity length of 35µm can be up to 2.23pm/με and 28.5nm respectively. Moreover, the proposed FP strain sensor has a negligible temperature sensitivity in the range of 25–75°C. It is anticipated that such easy making, compact and low-cost fiber-optic strain sensors could find important applications in practice.
