Abstract:A dynamic encoder for converting temperature codes and cycle temperature codes into binary codes is proposed based on domino circuit. By using compressed codes, this dynamic encoder can be applied to 4-10 bits parallel CMOS ADC. It has several advantages: high speed, small area and low power dissipation.

Abstract:A time-encoding machine (TEM) based new analog-to-digital converter (ADC) architecture is presented in this paper. The main advantage of this architecture is that it relies on asynchronous process and removes an important performance limiting factor in conventional ADCs: the clock jitter. Therefore, this architecture is suitable for very high speed ADCs. To expand the bandwidth coverage, the compressive sensing techniques is employed to reconstruct sparse signals with very high frequency. The system can run under two different modes: the normal mode where the signal is sampled at above Nyquist rate and the compressive sensing mode. Nonidealities in circuits and system parameter setting tradeoffs are analyzed to determine the best parameters for the system to reach optimal performance.

Abstract:This brief presents a fully dynamic incremental $\Delta \Sigma $ ADC for multi-channel simultaneous sampling systems. By using the code division multiplexing technique, a single incremental $\Delta \Sigma $ ADC core can sample the 4-channel signals meanwhile preserving the temporal information. Furthermore, to support various bandwidths with scalable power consumption, a fully dynamic cascoded floating-inverter-amplifier based integrator is used. The proposed 4-channel ADC is fabricated in a standard 180nm CMOS process and only occupies an area of 0.028mm2 per channel. The ADC achieves an SNDR of 80dB within a scalable bandwidth from 1.52kHz to 8.78kHz with power scaling from $56~\mu \text{W}$ to $295~\mu \text{W}$ for each channel. This results in a 154.7dB Schreier FoM within the scaling range.

The Precharge & Evaluate dynamic circuit is employed in the novel encoder and the bit synchronization logic to achieve high speed and reduce power dissipation. Abstract:A novel encoding scheme with high speed and low power is proposed for folding and interpolating ADC. In the encoder,XOR-OR encoding algorithm and a novel serial-parallel Domino circuit are adopted. A novel method for wide-range error correction and bit synchronization is presented. Simulation results show that the proposed encoder has about 56% decreases on power delay product compared to conventional ROM encoder and this encoder is more applicable for the folding and interpolating ADC with higher resolution.

Abstract:This brief proposes a fully dynamic zoom ADC, which uses the residue feedforward technique to reduce the "fuzz" caused by the coarse SAR ADC's quantization noise leakage in free running mode, and uses the extended counting technique to obtain the quantization error in incremental mode. The zoom ADC achieves high resolution in both modes. An improved cascoded floating -inverter -amplifier based integrator is used for low power and fully dynamic conversion. Fabricated in a standard 180nm CMOS process, the zoom ADC occupies an active area of 0.204mm(2), and consumes less than 1 mu W while achieving 102.1dB and 97.6dB SNDR in 95Hz bandwidth (BW) in free -running and incremental modes, respectively, corresponding to 182.2dB and 177.5dB FoM(SNDR).

Abstract:This paper presents a digital encoding way to optimize the property of a 6-bit 1.33-GS/s folding and interpolating ADC. Instead of the conventional digital encoding way, i.e. zero-crossing point searching, an adder-coding scheme is used to transfer the cyclic thermometer code into binary code, which eliminates the missing code and elevates the ENOB of the FI ADC from 3.80 bits to 5.02 bits at the Nyquist sampling.

Abstract:A 150MS/s 10-bit MOS-inverter-based subranging analog-to-digital converter (ADC) dedicated to a high-speed low-power application is presented in this paper. A new time constant reduction technique is proposed in the multi-stage preamplifier design which aims to further increase the speed of the coarse ADC. A synchronized switch is introduced to minimize the sample-time mismatch in the interleaved architecture of fine ADCs. An internal pipelined scheme incorporating the double sampling and interleaving techniques in fine ADCs allows the ADC sample input signal to run on a consecutive clock, thus maximizing the throughput. The prototype ADC achieves 52dB SNDR for a 10MHz input frequency at 150MS/s. Without calibration, the measured differential nonlinearity (DNL) is 0.5 LSB, while the integral nonlinearity (INL) is 0.9 LSB. The CMOS ADC is fabricated in a 0.35µm CMOS technology, with an active area of 2.7mm2, consuming only 178mW from a single 3V supply. Comparing technology normalized figure-of-merits, it achieves better power-speed efficiency than other similar types of ADCs.

Abstract:A 10-bit 30-Msample/s pipelined analog-to-digital converter is designed and implemented in a 0.6μm CMOS technology. Sampling capacitors scaling technique is employed to reduce the power dissipation. The digital correction technique is used to relax the offset requirement of the comparators. A sample-and-hold amplifier (SHA) is also used to improve the signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SNDR) performance and the linearity of ADC. The simulation and experiment results reveal that the ADC designed with this method achieves the SNDR of 58dB or the ENOB of 9.34 at full speed of 30MHz when input frequency is 7MHz. Furthermore, the ADC consumes only 50mW power at 5V supply voltage with a low power operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) and the dynamic comparators. © 2005 IEEE.

Abstract:A 10-bit 20-Msample/s CMOS pipelined analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is proposed, which is implemented in a 0.6/spl mu/m double-poly double-metal CMOS process. The digital correction technique is used to relax the offset requirement of the comparators. To reduce signal-dependent charge injection and substrate noise injection, the bottom-plate sampling technology is applied. A sample-and-hold amplifier (SHA) is also used to improve the signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SNDR) performance and the linearity of ADC. The circuit is simulated by the Hspice software which is based on CSMCs library of 0.6/spl mu/m mixed-signal CMOS model. The simulation results reveal that the ADC designed with this method achieves the SNDR of 58dB at full speed of 20MHz when input frequency is 5MHz. Furthermore, the ADC consumes 49mW power at 5V supply voltage with a low power operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) and the dynamic comparators.

Abstract:This study aims to design an optoelectronic integrated chip to read absolute code information. A detector array matching the code disk was designed to better realize high-speed low-light detection. For the pseudo-random code channel, the readout circuit adopted a linear array CMOS image sensor architecture, where each pixel corresponded to an independent readout unit, making the readout signal more advantageous in terms of both reading speed and noise. For the incremental code channel, the readout circuit followed a distributed arrangement design, and a two-stage pipelined amplifier architecture was adopted to eliminate the influence of even harmonics and ensure the quality of the read signal. Finally, a high-precision angular displacement sensor test platform based on an optical continuous closed-loop was built to test the encoder prototype equipped with the chip. The results show that an angular resolution of 22 bits and a subdivision accuracy of 5.64 ″ have been achieved.

Abstract:Two circuit techniques for performance enhancement of high-speed flash ADCs are proposed. A calibration-intensive dynamic comparator features an improved built-in reference voltage generation scheme to alleviate the issue of kickback noise, and a proper reset function to clean the memory effect due to the dielectric relaxation in the capacitors, yielding better static and dynamic linearity performances. The second is a split-ROM encoder, which halves the signaling path to lower the parasitics, while boosting the back-end processing speed with small power. The feasibility of them is demonstrated via a 5-bit flash ADC designed in 65nm CMOS. With 3.69mW of power, the ADC operated at 2GS/s exhibits an ENOB of >4.5 bits up to an ERBW of 3.6GHz. The DNL and INL are within +0.091/−0.071 and +0.066/−0.062 LSB, respectively.

Abstract:A 8-bit 150 MHz low-power CMOS folding and interpolating analog-to-digital converter with a fully-folding technique is designed in a 0.35 mum standard digital CMOS process. Folding circuits are not only used in fine converter but also in coarse one and in bit synchronization block to reduce the number of comparators for low power. A novel bit synchronization architecture based on folding circuits is presented. A low-power encoder using a novel arithmetic is adopted. The total power dissipation is merely 65 mW at a 3.3 V supply.

Abstract:A dynamic comparator is the core element in high-speed, high-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) used for communication applications. The majority of the dynamic comparators can only operate at high speeds when the input difference voltage is large enough. Due to the limited pre-amplifier gain, the comparators' performance deteriorates at lower input difference voltages, which is not suitable for high-speed, high-resolution ADCs. A double-tail dynamic comparator with a pair of auxiliary inverters is proposed to alleviate this problem. With the proposed comparator, the pre-amplifier's differential gain is increased, and the latch regeneration time is reduced by the auxiliary inverter pair resulting in faster comparison operations. The proposed comparator is designed, simulated, and compared with the latest topologies in 65 nm CMOS technology. The performance metrics such as delay, kickback noise, energy consumption per bit, rms noise, and power delay product are evaluated and compared with the state-of-the-art architectures. The proposed technique can be applied to any dynamic comparator that has differential signals at the output of the pre-amplifier stage. Simulations show that the auxiliary inverter pair improves the comparator's speed by more than 10%.

Abstract:This paper presents a new method to realize a 5 bit digital-to-time converter (DTC), in which constant-slope charging has been used. It also proposes a new structure, using a charge-sharing-based encoding and an ingenious timing to generate different start voltages to control the delay of the circuit, which greatly reduces power consumption. The DTC mentioned has been implemented in standard 130nm CMOS, achieving 87fs fine resolution when running at 50MHz, and consumes about 0.2 µ W. Differential nonlinearity (DNL) and integral nonlinearity (INL) are below 0.18LSB and 0.23LSB, respectively.

Abstract:To reduce the power consumption of a TDC in high-speed applications, a TDC architecture applied to SS ADC is proposed to reduce redundant counting. This structure can remove the identical part between two rows of pixel signals in a CMOS image sensor by adjusting the start and stop signal of the TDC, which will reduce the number of flipping of D flip-flops in the TDC. This structure requires the simultaneous readout of two rows of pixels in the high-speed CMOS image sensor. In the 110 nm CMOS process, simulation results show that the designed 5-bit TDC achieves an effective number of bits (ENOB) at 4.72 bits and a figure-of-merit (FOM) at 104.7–162.3 fJ/step, with a power consumption ranging from 60 μW to 93 μW. Compared with traditional counting methods, the proposed TDC can reduce counting power consumption by 30%.

Abstract:A CMOS 6 bit 150 MHz flash analog-to-digital converter, fully compatible with standard digital CMOS technology, is described. Compared with the conventional encoding structure, competition encoding can reduce the comparator's power consumption as well as suppress the error code rate of the ADC output greatly. The chip, fabricated in standard 0.35 μm 3.3 V CMOS technology, occupies an area of 0.64×0.45 mm2. Finally, some test results are presented.

Abstract:Folding and interpolating architecture are widely used in designing high-speed ADCs. A new time-interleaving technique combined with folding and interpolating techniques was presented,with which the conversion rate almost doubled while power and chip area remained.Based on bit synchronization technique,a new encoding mode was designed which could simplify coarse channel design.An 8 bit 400 MS/s CMOS folding and interpolating ADC was designed based on the techniques above.The ADC draws about 110 mA from a 1.8 V supply and the chip size is only 1 mm×0.8 mm.The ADC achieves 47.2 dB SNDR and 57.1 dB SFDR at Nyquist input.

Abstract:A CMOS folding and interpolating analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for embedded application is described.The circuit is fully compatible with standard digital CMOS technology.A modified folding block implemented without resistor contributes to a small chip area.At the input stage,offset averaging reduces the input capacitance and the distributed track-and-hold circuits are proposed to improve signal-to-noise-plus-distortion ratio.The 200Ms/s 8bit ADC with 177mW total power consumption at 3.3V power supply is realized in standard digital 0.18μm 3.3V CMOS technology.
