Abstract:Polar dielectrics are important optical materials enabling the subwavelength manipulation of light in infrared due to their capability to excite phonon polaritons.In practice,it is highly desired to actively modify these hyperbolic phonon polaritons（HPPs） to optimize or tune the response of the device.In this work,we investigate the plasmonic material,a monolayer graphene,and study its hybrid structure with three kinds of hyperbolic thin films grown on SiO 2 substrate.The inter-mode hybridization and their tunability have been thoroughly clarified from both the band dispersions and the mode patterns numerically calculated through a transfer matrix method.Our results show that these hybrid multilayer structures are of strong potentials for applications in plasmonic waveguides,modulators and detectors in infrared.

Abstract:Near-field radiative heat transfer between closely placed objects may exceed the far-field black-body radiation limit by orders of magnitude, especially between polaritonic materials. Great efforts have been made to experimentally measure this fundamental effect in various systems. In this work, we manage to experimentally characterize the near-field thermal emission between less explored plasmon-phonon hybrid material systems made of a graphene-$\mathrm{Si}\mathrm{C}$ heterostructure. The experiment is carried out using a custom-designed all-optical measurement setup. A heat flux enhancement factor of 26 over the black-body radiation limit is obtained at a 150-nm vacuum gap. Three fundamental modes, i.e., surface plasmon and phonon polaritons with frustrated modes, are identified to contribute the near-field heat flux in this hybrid system. The measured results are well reproduced from the analytical calculations, indicating the robustness of the measurement. Deeper experimental explorations for near-field heat transfer between more complicated material systems could be encouraged in the future.

Abstract:Plasmonics could provide compact and powerful solutions for manipulating light in deep-subwavelength dimensions, which is promising for a great range of nanophotonic technologies such as plasmonic rulers and sensors. However, the effective area of enhanced localized field induced by surface plasmon polaritons is typically restricted to the structural boundaries. In this work, we propose a method to generate high quality-factor extended electromagnetic fields via hybridizing the super-radiant state and the quasi bound state in the continuum of graphene metasurfaces. The coupling interaction involved operates as a three-level system with multiple sharp resonances immune to the polarization, which holds great promise for developing nanodevices with high sensing capacity in two dimensions.

Electrical manipulation of plasmon-phonon polaritons in heterostructures of graphene on biaxial crystals

Abstract: Phonon polaritons in natural anisotropic crystals hold great promise for infrared nano-optics. However, the direct electrical control of these polaritons is difficult, preventing the development of active polaritonic devices. Here we propose the heterostructures of graphene on a biaxial crystal ({\alpha}-phase molybdenum trioxide) slab and theoretically study the hybridized plasmon-phonon polaritons with dependence on the Fermi level of graphene from three aspects: dispersion relationships, iso-frequency contours, and the quantum spin Hall effects. We demonstrate the distinct wavelength tunability of the plasmon-phonon polaritons modes and the optical topologic transitions from open (hyperbolic) to closed (bow-tie-like) iso-frequency contours as the increase of the Fermi level of graphene. Furthermore, we observe the tunable quantum spin Hall effects of the plasmon-phonon polaritons, manifesting propagation direction switching by the Fermi level tuning of the graphene. Our findings open opportunities for novel electrically tunable polaritonic devices and programmable quantum optical networks.

Abstract:Graphene plasmons exhibit significant potential across diverse fields, including optoelectronics, metamaterials, and biosensing. However, the exposure of all surface atoms in graphene renders it susceptible to surrounding interference, including losses stemming from charged-impurity scattering, dielectric environment, and substrate roughness. Thus, designing a dielectric environment with a long lifetime and tunability is essential. In this study, we created a van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure with graphene nanoribbons and mica nano-films. Through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, we identified hybrid modes resulting from the interaction between graphene plasmons and mica phonons. By doping and manipulating the structure of graphene, we achieved control over the phonon-plasmon ratio, thereby influencing the characteristics of these modes. Phonon-dominated modes exhibited stable resonant frequencies, whereas plasmon-dominated modes demonstrated continuous tuning from 1140 to 1360 cm-1 in resonance frequency, accompanied by an increase in extinction intensity from 0.1% to 1.2%. Multiple phonon couplings limited frequency modulation, yielding stable resonances unaffected by gate voltage. Mica substrates offer atomic level flatness, long phonon lifetimes, and dielectric functionality, enabling hybrid modes with high confinement, extended lifetimes (up to 1.9 picoseconds), and broad frequency range (from 750 cm-1 to 1450 cm-1). These properties make our graphene and mica heterostructure promising for applications in chemical sensing and integrated photonics devices.

Temperature Sensor of MoS2 Based on Hybrid Plasmonic Waveguides

Abstract:In order to overcome the challenge of traditional sensors, including large size, complex preparation process, and difficult filling and sensing media, a long-range dielectric-loaded hybrid plasmonic waveguide (LRDLHPW) based on MoS2 is proposed and numerically studied. The propagation length is as high as 4.85 cm, and the corresponding mode width is 981 nm. A near-infrared plasmonic sensor based on the hybrid plasmonic waveguide-nanocavity system achieves a refractive index sensitivity of 787.5 nm/RIU and line width and figure of merit of 30 nm and 26.3, respectively; at the same time, the temperature sensitivity is as high as 2.775 nm/ ° C. Compared with other researches, the sensor proposed in this paper improves the adaptability and sensitivity of the device, and the ultracompact structure combined with the planar waveguide structure makes it easy to integrate to chip. In addition, the device can also be used as an adjustable surface plasmon polaritons band-pass filter. Note that increasing sensitivity is accompanied by decreasing resolution, and vice versa. The trade-off between sensitivity and resolution is important in order to achieve a larger figure of merit. In general, the structure designed by us achieves good optical and sensing characteristics and is widely used in nanophotonic circuits, environmental monitoring, and even drug research.
Electrical Tuning of Surface Plasmon Polariton Propagation in Graphene-Nanowire Hybrid Structure.

Abstract:We demonstrate a dynamic surface plasmonic modulation based on graphene-nanowire (grapheme-NW) hybrid structures in the visible light range. A static modulation depth of as high as 0.07 dB/μm has been achieved experimentally. Through careful simulation and systematical experimental investigation, we found that the dual-confinement effect of charge density and electromagnetic energy around the vicinity of the NW will dramatically enhance the light-matter interaction and increase the Fermi level shifting, which are the key roles for bringing the optical response of the device to the visible range. The carrier concentration near the vicinity of a Ag NW is estimated to reach 0.921×10(14) cm(-2) after applying more than 25 V voltages, which is enough to shift the Fermi level for visible light. Furthermore, the modulation behaviors near the Dirac point of monolayer graphene and the singularity of gap-induced bilayer graphene are investigated. Calculated optical conductivity as a function of Fermi level predicts a minimum value near the Dirac point, which is consistent with the experimental results.

Abstract:The unique properties of graphene have recently attracted major attention leading to proposals in electronic, optoelectronic, and detector applications. Micro-Raman spectroscopy has been utilized as a convenient tool for identifying graphene layers. Most Raman studies were limited to layers on silicon substrates with an oxide layer thickness of 300 nm, rendering graphene visible under an optical microscope. The development of graphene technology requires its integration with different materials and strict control of the number of layers and defects. Thus it is important to extend the nanometrology capabilities of Raman spectroscopy to arbitrary substrates and temperatures. Here we report that the deconvolution of the 2D band allows one to count graphene layers even when placed on "inconvenient" substrates such as glass or sapphire. We also show that even small excitation laser power typically used for Raman spectroscopy may lead to strong heating in graphene. The determined temperature coefficients for graphene allowed us to evaluate the temperature rise and decouple the temperature effects from those due to variations in the graphene edges or substrates.
Temperature-Adaptive Modulation of Transverse Magnetic Intrinsic Graphene Plasmons

Abstract:A method for modulating transverse magnetic intrinsic graphene plasmons by temperature is proposed. In contrast to existing 2D or 3D infinite graphene structures, an intrinsic graphene 3D finite structure with periodicity in all three directions is designed. At the matching point, where the dispersion curve of the intrinsic graphene plasmons intersects with that of electromagnetic radiation, the intrinsic graphene plasmons and electromagnetic radiation can be excited by each other; in other words, the plasmon can be excited by light without additional mechanisms. Furthermore, the influence of environment temperature on the matching point is shown. The study reveals that the plasmon modulation is adaptive to the temperature. These results are beneficial for the design of compact graphene-based optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:We demonstrate an ultra-sensitive photodetector based on a graphene/monolayer MoS2 vertical heterostructure working at room temperature. Highly confined plasmon waves are efficiently excited through a periodic array of monolayer graphene ribbons in which plasmon resonance has remarkably large oscillator strength, resulting in a sharp optical absorption peak in the normal-incidence transmission spectrum. A significant amount of electron-hole pairs are produced in graphene ribbons by optical absorption, separated by the built-in electric field across the graphene/MoS2 heterojunction. The responsivity reaches up to 1 x 10(7) A W-1 at room temperature due to very strong resonance in the heterostructure, yielding a highly sensitive graphene-based photodetector. Additionally, the absorption can be tuned over a wide spectral range (6-16 mu m) by varying gate biasing. The ultra-sensitive, spectrally tunable photodetector could be potentially used as a promising candidate for mid-infrared micro-spectrometers.
Temperature Characterization of Raman Scattering in an AlGaN/GaN Heterostructure

Abstract:Raman scattering from an AlGaN/GaN heterostructure was performed in the temperature range from 77 to 773 K. The first- and second-order Raman scattering of the A1 longitudinal-optical phonon–plasmon coupled mode from an AlGaN/GaN interface as well as the Raman scattering from the GaN layer were observed. All the modes downshift, and their intensities weaken with increasing temperature. The free-carrier concentration estimated by the frequency of the coupled mode from an AlGaN/GaN interface is 7.5 times as high as that of n-AlGaN, indicating mass free-carrier transfer from the AlGaN barrier to the GaN well. Moreover, the temperature dependence of the phonon frequency is well described by an empirical formula.

Abstract:Graphene has been a subject of intense interest because of its unique physical properties. Raman spectroscopy became a valuable tool for determining the number of graphene layers and assessing their quality. Here we review our recent results on the effects of substrates and temperatures on Raman signatures of graphene. Specifically, we considered graphene on GaAs, glass, sapphire, standard Si/SiO2 substrates and suspended across trenches in Si/SiO2 wafers. We found consistent values for Raman G peak frequency in the suspended graphene and graphene on standard substrates. It was relatively strongly down-shifted by similar to 5 cm(-1) for graphene on A-plane sapphire. Raman inspection of many spots on graphene layers on glass indicated that in some instances G peak was split into doublets. We investigated the temperature dependence of the Raman spectrum of graphene and found that G peak red shifts with increasing temperature despite graphene's negative coefficient of thermal expansion. Using the measured temperature coefficient of graphene G peak we were able to adopt Raman spectroscopy for determining the thermal conductivity of graphene. The knowledge of the temperature and substrate effects on graphene Raman spectra is important for extending the application of micro-Raman spectroscopy as a nanometrology tool for graphene characterization and graphene device fabrication. Abstract:The ability to control light-matter interaction is central to several potential applications in lasing, sensing, and communication. Graphene plasmons provide a way of strongly enhancing the interaction and realizing ultrathin optoelectronic devices. Here, we find that photoluminescence (PL) intensities of the graphene/GeSi quantum dots hybrid structures are saturated and quenched under positive and negative voltages at the excitation of 325 nm, respectively. A mechanism called plasmon-gating effect is proposed to reveal the PL dependence of the hybrid structures on the external electric field. On the contrary, the PL intensities at the excitation of 405 and 795 nm of the hybrid structures are quenched due to the charge transfer by tuning the Fermi level of graphene or the blocking of the excitons recombination by excitons separation effect. The results also provide an evidence for the charge transfer mechanism. The plasmon gating effect on the PL provides a new way to control the optical properties of graphene/QD hybrid structures.
Variable Temperature Raman Microscopy As A Nanometrology Tool For Graphene Layers And Graphene-Based Devices

Abstract:Raman microscopy of graphene was carried out over the temperature range from 83 to 373 K. The number of layers was independently confirmed by the quantum Hall measurements and atomic force microscopy. The values of the temperature coefficients for the G and 2D-band frequencies extracted from Raman spectra of the single-layer graphene are -(1.6+/-0.2)x10(-2) cm(-1)/K and -(3.4+/-0.4)x10(-2) cm(-1)/K, respectively. The G peak temperature coefficients of the bilayer graphene and bulk graphite are -(1.5+/-0.06)x10(-2) cm(-1)/K and -(1.1+/-0.04)x10(-2) cm(-1)/K, respectively. The results are important for the application of Raman microscopy as a nanometrology tool for the graphene-based devices operating at various temperatures. (C) 2007 American Institute of Physics.
Ultralong Lifetime Plasmons on Picosecond Time Scale Enabled by Hybrid Plasmon-Phonon Polaritons

Abstract:Graphene plasmonics is of great interest for compact optical devices working in broad frequency domains with ultrahigh speed and very low energy consumption. However, graphene plasmons damp out quickly on most substrates mainly due to scattering loss from substrate surface phonons and impurities. Here we discover a new hybridized plasmon-phonon polariton mode in graphene/h-BN van der Waals heterostructures, which enables ultralong hybrid plasmon lifetime up to 1.6 picosecond, the longest plasmon lifetime ever demonstrated. Such remarkably long lifetime arises from the coupling of long-lifetime h-BN transverse optical phonon with graphene plasmons, which uniquely exists in monolayer heterostructures. Our findings and understanding of this unexploited hybrid mode offer a novel approach to tune the plasmon behaviours in the frequency, time and space domains. This can potentially introduce a new paradigm to generate highly-confined plasmons with ultra-long lifetime for various applications, such as deep-subwavelength metamaterials, ultra-low-loss waveguides, and ultrafast optical switches.

Chiral Light-Matter Interactions with Thermal Magnetoplasmons in Graphene Nanodisks

Abstract:We investigate the emergence of self-hybridized thermal magnetoplasmons in doped graphene nanodisks at finite temperatures when subjected to an external magnetic field. Using a semi-analytical approach, which fully describes the eigenmodes and polarizability of the graphene nanodisks, we show that the hybridization originates from the coupling of transitions between thermally populated Landau levels and localized magnetoplasmon resonances of the nanodisks. Owing to their origin, these modes combine the extraordinary magneto-optical response of graphene with the strong field enhancement of plasmons, making them an ideal tool for achieving strong chiral light-matter interactions, with the additional advantage of being tunable through carrier concentration, magnetic field, and temperature. As an illustration of their capabilities, we demonstrate that the thermal magnetoplasmons supported by an array of graphene nanodisks enable chiral perfect absorption and chiral thermal emission.

Abstract:Heterostructures from two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides MX2 have emerged as a hot topic in recent years due to their various fascinating properties. Here, we investigated the temperature dependent Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectra in vertical stacked WS2/MoS2 monolayer heterostructures. Our result shows that both E12g and A1g modes of WS2 and MoS2 vary linearly with temperature increasing from 300 to 642K. The PL measurement also reveals strong temperature dependencies of the PL intensity and peak position. The activation energy of the thermal quenching of the PL emission has been found to be equal to 69.6meV. The temperature dependence of the peak energy well follows the band-gap shrinkage of bulk semiconductor.
