Abstract:Surge Impedance Relay(SIR) is applied to DC system. Characteristics of SIR in DC line are analysed. A DC SIR algorithm implementing wavelet transform applied to HVDC line protection is proposed. The feasibility of DC SIR is verified and the performance of DC SIR is simulated and analysed.

Abstract:The paper analyzes the operating performances of the surge impedance relay (SIR). The influence of bus capacitance for the relay is studied firstly, followed by case study of every fault configuration. Theoretical analysis and EMTP simulation results suggest that the performance of the relay is immune from fault configuration and load conditions. And satisfactory performance can be expected in even in zero-voltage and close-up faults.

Abstract:According to the property that the surge impedance relay is realized by the ratio of voltage and current travelling waves, the relay's algorithm based on wavelets is present. The algorithm solves the problems of extracting travelling waves and constructing criterion. Its core is that multi-scale criterion is constructed with wavelet transforms. Theoretical analyses and EMTP simulations verify that the algorithm possesses many advantages such as precision, high reliability and immunity to noise. The algorithm can be implemented easily by digital manner. 　
Research on Unloaded Switching into Fault Protection for UHV Transmission Line

Abstract:The rapidity of conventional switching into fault (SIF) protection is decelerated greatly because of the serious transient of unloaded switching in ultra high voltage (UHV) or extra high voltage (EHV) transmission line. Theoretical analysis shows that the impedance angles measured between switching into normal and fault state are different. Based on the comparison of the harmonic noise level under these conditions, a novel scheme of unloaded SIF protection with an assistant speedy distance relay is put forward in this paper. Analysis and mass EMTP simulation show that the scheme can distinguish fault state from normal line quickly and accurately. Accordingly it possesses a good engineering application prospect for its sensitivity and rapidity.

Abstract:In contrast to alternating current(AC) power transmission,direct current(DC) power transmission has a series of advantages,such as low line loss and nonexistence of the problem of system synchronous operation stability.In recent years, with the rapid development of voltage source converter technology with higher voltage,the study on flexible multi-terminal high voltage direct current transmission(HVDC) system,DC transmission and distribution power net,as well as the related key technologies and equipments such as the high-voltage DC circuit breaker (DC-breaker) has captured great attention from the community at home and abroad.The research status of three types of DC-breakers(spoken of as the mechanical type,all-solid-state and hybrid type DC-breakers) and their topologies,working principles,advantages as well as disadvantages are briefly treated.It is concluded that the hybrid type should be the main trend of development for high-voltage DC-breakers. Furthermore,a scheme of hybrid DC-breakers with fault current limiting is proposed, its feasibility verified through simulation.In this scheme the DC-breaker adopts the hybrid solid-state switch (composed of half and full gate-controlled devices in series connection) which is paralleled with a mechanical breaker involving the fault-current-limiting technology. Therefore the rising rate of short-circuit current can be effectively restrained,relieving the requirement on fault diagnosis sensitivity and mechanical breaker speed.Moreover,the series quantities of solid-state switching devices (especially the expensive full gate-controlled devices such as the insulated gate bipolar transistor)in high voltage application,and the technical difficulty and production costs etc will be reduced.

Abstract:An impedance relay is the core element of a distance protection, which is widely applied in power systems. Impedance relay's operation can be affected by power swings. Therefore, a power swing blocking element is required to work with, which makes the distance protection scheme more complex. Using the multiphase compensated distance relay as the base, the resultant distance protection can be made insensitive to the power swings and no additional time blocking element is needed. So, it is valuable to analyze the operation characteristics of multiphase compensated distance relays. By analyzing the relay's equation, this paper reported on the performance of the three elements in multiphase compensated distance relays in the case of a single phase to ground fault during power swings. This paper defined the missing operation's area for a faulty phase element and the maloperation's area for a health phase element. The paper also pointed out the disadvantages of the relay working as the protection of II or III section. PSCAD simulation results verified the conclusions. © 2013 Chin. Soc. for Elec. Eng.

Abstract:Based on the basic principle and properties of surge impedance relay, the implement scheme of the relay is proposed, which contains both hardware and software design. Fast and synchronous sampling techniques are adopted in the scheme of hardware, and fast digital signal processing (DSP) chip is used to realize the relay. In the design, the coordination of the designed relay with other relay has been carefully considered. Abstract:The current-transferring type HVDC circuit breaker (CT-DCB) can reduce the investment cost and optimize the equipment utilization value. However, the operation reliability of the CT-DCB is lower than the hybrid HVDC breaker (H-DCB). In order to improve its reliability, the reliability improvement methods based on the equipment level and the system level are proposed. In the equipment level, a new diode clamped CT-DCB is proposed to improve the device reliability. In the system level, a redundant configuration strategy is proposed to improve the dc fault isolation capability and the backup protection capability. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, a simulation model of four-terminal HVDC transmission system with the diode clamped CT-DCB is established in PSCAD/EMTDC. Simulation results prove validity and feasibility of the proposed scheme.
Analysis on Insulation Coordination Scheme for ±800 Kv DC Converter Station

Abstract:Insulation coordination of converter substation is one of key technologies in the implementation of ±800kV DC power transmission project. Based on two ±800kV DC power transmission projects being constructed in China, i.e., the DC power transmission project from Xiangjiaba to Shanghai and that from Yunnan to Guangdong, the features of insulation coordination for UHVDC converter substations are analyzed in the aspects of separate arrangement of split smoothing reactor and the configuration of lightning arresters. The economic and technical superiorities of the separate arrangement of split smoothing reactor in UHVDC power transmission are emphatically researched, and it is pointed out that the separate arrangement of split smoothing reactor will be the preferred arrangement of smoothing reactor in UHVAC converter stations. The arrangement of lightning arresters for above-mentioned two converter subsatations are given, and the protecting function of each arrester is described. Finally, the end-to-end protecting function of smoothing reactor connected with pole bus by parallel arresters, which is adopted in UHVAC projects, as well as the merits and defects of different protection modes adopted for at the valve side of wye-wye connected converter transformer in above-metioned two UHVDC proj ects are analyzed.
Analysis and Improvement of Zero Sequence Reactance Relay With Applications in Ultra-High-Voltage Long AC Transmission Lines

Abstract:The performance of ground impedance relay with applications in UHV transmission lines is easy to be disturbed by earth resistance, since the linear relation between measuring impedance and fault distance is replaced by the hyperbolic tangent function. The zero sequence reactance relay (ZSRR) is widely adopted in high-voltage and extra-high-voltage transmission systems due to its good anti-resistance ability and stable protective zone. Hence the ZSRR is evaluated in this paper to verify its performance with applications in UHV lines. And in response to the existed questions, such as the obvious protective zone and relay sensitivity reduction, the possible influence factors are analyzed, and then a novel negative sequence reactance relay is proposed with considering the impact of load current. The simulation results prove its good performance.

Abstract:Hybrid high voltage direct current (HVDC) breaker is one of the most important equipment in DC transmission networks. As it is known, the hybrid breaker consists of large numbers of power electronics devices and the nonlinear elements, so, during the fault occurrence there are many transients voltages and currents with sharp rate of (dv/dt, di/dt) resulting from switch-on and switch-off of transistors which may cause electromagnetic interference (EMI). The EMI not only affects hybrid breaker self-electronic system, but also affects the neighboring communication and control devices. In this paper the sources of EMI have been identified and the snubber circuit conducted EMI characteristics have been simulated under normal operation and fault occurrence using PSCAD/EMTDC software.
Study on overvoltage and insulation coordination of DC filter for ±800 kV UHVDC project from Xiangjiaba to Shanghai

Abstract:Based on the ±800 kV UHVDC project from Xiangjiaba to Shanghai,two typical faults for transient calculation of DC filter including ground fault on the DC line and incoming switching surge on the DC line are presented.The simulation steep-fronted models and factors including protective characteristics of arresters,parasitic inductances of DC bus and DC filter high voltage capacitor which should be considered for these two faults are introduced.The calculation results give the transient stresses for reactors and resistors.The protective levels of arresters are obtained according to the calculated maximum arrester currents,and the withstand levels of the filter equipments are defined at last according to the insulation margin.
Performance analysis of phase distance relay on series compensated UHV lines

Abstract:For a long UHV line with large distributed capacitance, the lumped parameter model of SC line is no longer valid. The apparent impedances of distance relay on series compensated line are derived and analyzed in details based on the distributed parameter model. Results show that the apparent impedances are influenced by the location of series capacitors. The sensitivity of relays is reduced largely by the settings based on lumped parameter model, while the overreach of relay occurs by the settings based on distributed parameter model but without considering the location of series-compensated capacitors. A modified setting method considering the distributed parameter model and location of series capacitor is presented, and simulation shows that the modified setting method can improve the reliability and sensitivity of distance relay.

Abstract:In this study, a LCC-VSC hybrid HVDC transmission system was taken as an example. The valve and neutral overvoltage of the hybrid HVDC system were simulated and then calculated at the VSC converter station by installing a blocking diode and a DC circuit breaker, as well as by grounding after neutral bus outage. The isolation effect of the blocking diode and the DC circuit breaker on the VSC converter station in the protection and the effect on the DC overvoltage were compared, and the difference was analyzed by complying with the mechanism of overvoltage. The effect of different locations of the blocking diode on the overvoltage suppression was compared, and it was concluded that different locations of blocking diode could raise different requirements for the insulation coordination of the converter valve. By analyzing energy sources of the neutral bus overvoltage at different stages, it was further concluded that the energy stored in the distributed inductance of the metal return line could be a vital source of neutral bus overvoltage energy. On that basis, an overvoltage suppression strategy for grounding neutral bus directly after the stop of the converter station was proposed.

Abstract:A travelling wave based new directional relay named surge impedance relay is presented. Its basic principle is that the direction of fault is determined by the ratio of initial voltage wave and initial current wave. Its operating criteria are given and operating characteristics are described. The primary analysis shows that the new relay possesses satisfactory characteristics, such as explicit expression of fault direction, simplicity and fast operating time.

Abstract:Distance protection is widely applied in High/Ultra- High Voltage AC transmission system. Impedance relay, the core element of distance protection, may operate incorrectly under power swing, so a power swing blocking unit is needed in distance protection. In this paper, the phase difference between the measurement voltage and compensation voltage under power swing and line fault is analyzed. Based on the analysis, a power swing blocking strategy using the change rate of phase difference between measurement voltage and compensation voltage is proposed. Simulation results in PSCAD/EMTDC indicate that the proposed strategy can block the impedance relay reliably under power swing and unblock the impedance relay after detecting the fault under power swing.

Abstract:Rapid and effective identification and isolation of DC faults is one of the key technical difficulties in the development of DC distribution networks. Compared with the traditional AC system, the DC power distribution system has the characteristics of "low damping". After a DC fault occurs, the fault current is very large, and the fault development process is extremely fast. Usually, the safety of the entire distribution network can be endangered within a few milliseconds. Through analyzing the bipolar short-circuit fault characteristics and typical fault current waveforms of symmetric unipolar DC systems, this paper proposes a phased overcurrent protection strategy based on current magnitude and a phased current rate-of-change protection strategy based on current change rate. This strategy uses single-ended current data without communication. The main protection can accurately identify the faulty line within 1 millisecond after the fault, which can meet the protection requirements of the DC distribution network for power supply in remote areas. The proposed protection scheme can identify faulty lines quickly and reliably, and meet the requirements of rapidity, selectivity and reliability of protection.

Abstract:To address the limitations of current DC residual current protection methods, which primarily rely on the amplitude of DC residual current for fault detection and fail to safeguard against electric shocks at two points on the same side in DC Isolated Terra (IT) System systems, this paper introduces a novel protection method based on DC electric shock features. This paper first analyzes the sliding curvature accumulation and peak rise time features of DC basic residual current, load mutation current, and animal body electric shock current under multi-factor conditions. The analysis shows that sliding curvature accumulation in the range of 0.1 ≤ K ≤ 1 and a peak rise time of Δt ≥ 20 ms can effectively distinguish animal body electric shock. Then, based on this electric shock's distinctive characteristics, an approach for identifying types of electric shock is developed. Finally, a DC residual current protective device (DC-RCD) is designed. The prototype test results demonstrate that the DC-RCD has an action time of ts < 70 ms. The proposed method accurately provides protection against electric shocks and effectively addresses the issue of inadequate protection when two fault points occur on the same side within an IT system. This approach holds significant reference value for the development of next-generation DC-RCDs.

Analysis Of Mho Ground Relay Against To Earth Resistance In Ultra-High-Voltage Transmission Line Application

Abstract:Distributed line model should be adopted for Ultra-High-Voltage (UHV) transmission lines, which cause the replacement linear function with hyperbola function between measuring impedance and fault distance for ground impedance relay. The performance of ground impedance relay is sensitive to earth resistance decided by the characteristics of hyperbola function. Then the bad impact of earth resistance should be evaluated first for the practical application of ground impedance relay in UHV lines. In response to the question, the accurate expression of additional measuring impedance is described, and main factors influencing its characteristic are also analyzed. Theory analysis and case studies prove that the protective zone is reduced largely for relays located both at power sending end and receiving end, which conflicts to the common sense in High-Voltage and Extra-High-Voltage system. The reason is the impact of imaginary part of zero sequence current distribution factor. And the traditional way to overcome the earth resistance with only using the reactance component in measuring impedance is invalid since the non-linearity of resistance and reactance in measuring impedance for UHV lines.

Abstract:To solve the problem of the high rising rate and large peak value of the expected current of the short-circuit current in marine DC power system faults, a hybrid DC current limiting circuit breaker scheme based on a high-speed electromagnetic repulsion mechanism is proposed. A parameter selection model is constructed by comprehensively considering the short-time withstand of the thyristor, the volume of the commutation circuit, and capacitor energy, and the optimal value of the commutation circuit parameters at a certain voltage level is obtained. The finite element mathematical model of the high-speed electromagnetic repulsion mechanism is established by coupling the electromagnetic force field, which enables the deformation process of the mechanism under the condition of high acceleration to be considered. The von Mises yield criterion is adopted as the mechanical boundary condition in the design of a high-speed electromagnetic repulsion mechanism, which solves the problem of the long inherent time of opening. The experiment platform is built, and the experiment under the fault condition with a current rising rate of 20 A/μs is completed. The arcing time, commutation time, zero-voltage recovery time, and contact movement characteristics are obtained, which meet the design requirements, verify the effectiveness of the analysis, and lay a solid foundation for further research and development of the current limiting circuit breakers for medium voltage DC systems.

Abstract:When the direct current circuit breaker (DCCB) fails to operate, the fault range will further expand, endangering the safe operation of the power gird. Therefore, this study proposes a DCCB failure protection method and a secondary accelerated fault isolation scheme of voltage source converter-based high-voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) grids. On the basis of considering the influence of DCCB disconnection, characteristics of fault current after the failure of the DCCB are analyzed, and a circuit breaker failure protection method based on "increase current" discrimination is proposed. By analyzing the logical relationship among failed breaker re-tripping, adjacent DCCB action, blocking of the converter station, and AC circuit breaker action, a secondary accelerated fault isolation scheme is proposed to minimize the fault isolation area. The scheme achieves the accelerated isolation of DC faults after the failure of the DCCB and avoids the trip of the AC circuit breaker effectively. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
