Abstract:In this Letter, a 1 × 3 polarization-insensitive optical power splitter based on cascaded tapered silicon waveguides is proposed and experimentally demonstrated on a silicon-on-insulator platform. By utilizing the particle swarm optimization algorithm and the finite difference time domain method, the structural parameters of the coupling regions are carefully designed to achieve polarization-insensitive property, compact size, low insertion loss, high uniformity, and broad bandwidth. The coupling length can be as short as 7.3 µm. Our measurement results show that, at 1550 nm, the insertion losses of the fabricated device operating in transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarizations are, respectively, 0.068 dB and 0.62 dB. Within a bandwidth from 1525 to 1575 nm, the insertion loss is lower than 0.82 dB and the uniformity is less than 1 dB for the fabricated device operating in TE polarization, while the fabricated device operating in TM polarization can have an insertion loss smaller than 1.50 dB and a uniformity lower than 1 dB from 1528 to 1582 nm.

Abstract:An optical wavelength demultiplexer with the etched diffraction grating (EDG) on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) material is demonstrated. Fabricated by the wet-anisotropic-etching method, 90° turning mirrors are used to bend waveguides, and the size of the EDG-based demultiplexer is minimized to only 16×2.5 mm 2 . The crosstalk is below −16 dB. The on-chip loss is about 9.97 dB, which is composed of about 8.72 dB excess loss and 1.25 dB diffraction loss. The polarization-dependent central wavelength shift is below 0.13 nm, and the polarization-dependent loss is about 0.35 dB. The sources of the crosstalk and loss are discussed in details, and the related measures to improve the performance are also presented.

Abstract:In this paper, an on-chip silicon polarization beam splitter using a particle-swarm-optimized counter-tapered directional coupler is proposed, designed, and fabricated. The coupling length of the proposed device is only 5 µm. As the waveguide width variation ΔW increases from -20 to 20 nm, the simulated polarization extinction ratio larger than 18.67 dB and the corresponding insertion loss lower than 0.17 dB are achieved. Measured experimental results achieved insertion loss <0.50 dB, TE polarization extinction between 16.68 to 31.87 dB, TM polarization extinction between 17.78 to 31.13 dB, over the wavelength range 1525 to 1600 nm.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate broadband silicon mode (de)multiplexers based on the optimization of system adiabaticity using shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA). The measured insertion losses and crosstalks were less than 1.1 dB and -24 dB, respectively, for the five two-mode mode-division-multiplexing (MDM) links over wavelengths ranging from 1500 nm to 1600 nm. The four-mode MDM link showed measured insertion losses and crosstalks less than 1.3 dB and -23 dB, respectively, within the same wavelength range. The method paves the way for future adaptation of the STA protocols to various components.

Abstract:We propose a low-crosstalk and broadband mode (de)multiplexer. It is designed by cascading mode (de)interleavers utilizing silicon waveguide asymmetric Y-junctions. Asymmetric Y-junctions of each stage are modular. For each asymmetric Y-junction, the even (odd) modes of the stem separated from the odd (even) modes evolve into the low-order modes of the wide (narrow) arm by controlling the widths of the two arms, and vice versa. A four-channel mode (de)multiplexer for TE polarization is analyzed as an example. Simulations show the four-channel mode (de)multiplexer pair has a low crosstalk (<−14.1dB) over a common spectral bandwidth of 280nm.

Abstract:A silicon mode and polarization-division multiplexing scheme based on a densely packed waveguide array structured as a bus waveguide is introduced. A short adiabatic taper is adopted for (de) multiplexing. Such a structure shows theoretical insertion losses that are <0.05 dB and crosstalk that is <- 20 dB over a wide wavelength band for all five supported modes. The structures for (de) multiplexing are fabricated and characterized experimentally. A device, which consists of a multiplexer, a 50-mu m-long straight-bus waveguide, and a demultiplexer, exhibits insertion losses that are <0.6 dB and crosstalk that is <- 15 dB over an 80 nm wavelength band. The demonstrated (de) multiplexer has a total length of 60 mu m, and the bus waveguide has an effective width of 1.58 mu m. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:In this letter, we demonstrate an optical demultiplexer on the silicon-on-insulator material employing the turning-mirror-integrated arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG). We substitute the bent waveguide array in the traditional AWG configuration by adopting the structure of the turning-mirror-integrated straight waveguides. Description of the design procedure is provided. The crosstalk of the fabricated 1/spl times/4 AWG is better than -23.1 dB. The typical on-chip insertion loss is about -8 dB and the output nonuniformity is less than 0.4 dB. The polarization-dependent central wavelength shift is about 0.068 nm.

Abstract:Polarization dependence is an inherent challenge for wavelength-division multiplexing transceivers on silicon photonic platforms, causing severe problems with polarization-dependent losses and hindering the implementation of monolithic integrated receivers. In this study, we developed a polarization-insensitive demultiplexer on a silicon nitride (SiN) platform, which provides a promising solution to the polarization challenge. Comprising an etched diffraction grating (EDG) and a polarization beam splitter (PBS), the demultiplexer can achieve polarization insensitivity by introducing an additional optical path difference for polarization compensation. The fabricated demultiplexers were experimentally measured to have minimum insertion losses of 1.5 dB, cross talks of better than -25 dB, and polarization-dependent losses of better than 0.7 dB. This is the first, to the best of our knowledge, proposed solution for a polarization-insensitive EDG demultiplexer combined with a PBS on a SiN platform.

Abstract:Asymmetrical directional couplers aided with subwavelength sidewall corrugations are used to realize ultra-compact silicon mode (de)multiplexers at C-band. Three mode (de)multiplexers with ultra-short coupling lengths of 5.6/6.5/7.7 μm are designed to enable low-loss mode conversions between TE0 and TE1/2/3 modes. They are then cascaded to build a four-channel mode-division-multiplexing (MDM) link. The four mode channels present minimal on-chip insertion losses of 0.2/0.7/0.7/0.9 dB at their peak wavelengths. Measured cross talk levels of the four mode channels are better than -18.0/-19.1/-16.0/-18.2 dB within the wavelength range from 1530 nm to 1580 nm.

Abstract:In this paper,various silicon photonic devices designed for wavelength/mode/polarization multiplexing/demultiplexing are proposed,including arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) and etched diffraction grating (EDG),mode Mux/DeMux devices,polarization splitting grating coupler,and polarization splitting rotating device. With these novel devices,the following results can be achieved: (1) AWG could be formed by single step etching process; (2) EDG insertion loss is greatly reduced; (3) mode splitting device bandwidth increases,while the insertion loss is reduced; (4) the coupling efficiency of the polarization splitting grating coupler is effectively improved;(5) the insertion loss and bandwidth of the polarization splitting rotating device are also significantly improved. It is believed that the Mux/DeMux technologies on dimensions of wavelength/mode/polarization will be strongly supported by these silicon photonic devices,which are compatible with complementary metal oxide semiconductory (CMOS)-180 nm processing technologies.

Abstract:A multi-channel mode (de) multiplexer based on the super-mode evolution in cascaded dual-core adiabatic tapers is designed and realized with ultrathin (similar to 50 nm) siliconon-insulator nanowire waveguides. This dual-core adiabatic taper is designed optimally, so that all the supermodes are confined in the wide core at the input end and the highest-order supermode is localized in the narrow core at the output end. In this way, the highest-order supermode is dropped as the fundamental mode at the cross port. As an example, a (de) multiplexer with three mode channels is designed and fabricated. From the measured spectral responses, the fabricated device has a crosstalk lower than -20 dB and an excess loss less than 0.2 dB in a bandwidth of similar to 65 nm. Abstract:A 32-channel hybrid (de)multiplexer on silicon is designed and experimentally demonstrated to enable polarization division multiplexing (PDM) and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) for improving the capacity of optical communication links. The hybrid (de)multiplexer is realized by monolithically integrating a polarization rotator and splitter (PRS) and two 16-channel microring resonators (MRRs) arrays. The through and cross ports of the PRS are connected to the bus waveguide of the MRR arrays, respectively. In order to ensure a larger free spectrum range (FSR) to cover all wavelength channels, the radius of the microring is about 3 <inline-formula><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\mu$</tex-math></inline-formula>m and the wavelength-channel spacing is 1.6 nm. For the hybrid (de)multiplexer, the crosstalk between the adjacent channels and the non-adjacent channels are −20 dB and −25 dB, respectively. When TE<inline-formula><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$_{0}$</tex-math></inline-formula> mode input, the insertion loss is 1.5 dB–3.8 dB, the crosstalk between the through and cross port is less than −24 dB. When TM<inline-formula><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$_{0}$</tex-math></inline-formula> mode inputs, the insertion loss is 1.9 dB–4.5 dB and the polarization crosstalk is less than −22 dB. In order to eliminate the influence of the fabrication errors and temperature on resonance wavelength, a TiN thermal tuning electrode is added to calibrate the deviation of the wavelength.

Abstract:A polarization-insensitive four-channel wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) (de)multiplexer based on Mach-Zehnder interferometers is proposed and demonstrated. Polarization insensitivity can be achieved by utilizing the square waveguides and bend directional couplers (bend DCs) based on silicon oxynitride (SiON) waveguides. The WDM (de)multiplexer has an 800GHz spacing for LAN-WDM application. Two stages of cascaded MZIs are utilized to achieve a four-channel spectral response. For the realized WDM (de)multiplexer with Gaussian-like passbands, the polarization-dependent losses (PDL) are less than 0.7dB for all 1-dB passbands. The insertion losses are <~ 3dB and the crosstalk is <~ -12dB for both TE and TM polarizations at channel central wavelengths.

Abstract:A low-loss silicon rib waveguide crossing with low polarization dependence loss is proposed. The insertion loss for TE (TM) polarization mode is -0.14 dB (-0.29 dB) and the crosstalk is -28 dB (-30 dB) at 1550 nm. The footprint of this device is around 8×8 μm2.

Abstract:To realize practical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system, a high-performance AWG with an all-optical polarization state controller (AOPSC) is introduced. This device is polarization-independence based on asymmetric planar waveguide in the silicon-oxynitride material system with a high-refractive-index difference Deltan = 0.7% and large a/b (here, a is the width and b is the thickness of the core layer waveguide). Only TE0 mode can exist in the device, the TM0 mode is cutoff. Finally, an eight-channel AWG using 100GHz channel spacing (the center wavelength is 1552.52nm) is designed. In order to get more realistic results, the BPM method was used to simulate the light propagation in the AWG. The simulation was calculated for both TE and TM. Using BPM method, and we found only TE0 can propagate through the device. No polarization dependence was measured in the wavelength response.

Abstract:We demonstrate silicon-based multiple-slot waveguides filled with dual atomic layer deposited oxide layers. Slot modes for both polarizations, transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM), are supported in the waveguide. Propagation loss in the order of 8 dB/cm is achieved for the TE-polarization and 4 dB/cm for the TM-polarization in the waveguides with dual (Al2O3-TiO2) thin film layers. The devices are fabricated using low-temperature complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor compatible processes. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of dual-filled slot waveguides.
