Abstract:A high-performance polarizing beam splitter (PBS) is demonstrated by using asymmetrical directional couplers on a 220nm-thick silicon-on-insulator (SOI) photonics platform. The extinction ratio of the PBS with cascaded directional couplers is > 35 dB for both TE and TM polarizations around the central wavelength of 1550 nm. The bandwidths for an extinction ratio of 20 dB and 30 dB are 275 nm and 230 nm, respectively, for TE polarization, as well as > 300 nm and 225 nm, respectively, for TM polarization. The insertion losses for TE polarization are < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of > 300 nm. The insertion losses for TM polarization are < 1 dB and < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of 218 nm and 174 nm, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, an on-chip silicon polarization beam splitter using a particle-swarm-optimized counter-tapered directional coupler is proposed, designed, and fabricated. The coupling length of the proposed device is only 5 µm. As the waveguide width variation ΔW increases from -20 to 20 nm, the simulated polarization extinction ratio larger than 18.67 dB and the corresponding insertion loss lower than 0.17 dB are achieved. Measured experimental results achieved insertion loss <0.50 dB, TE polarization extinction between 16.68 to 31.87 dB, TM polarization extinction between 17.78 to 31.13 dB, over the wavelength range 1525 to 1600 nm.

Abstract:We demonstrate a compact silicon polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on grating-assisted contradirectional couplers (GACCs). Over 30-dB extinction ratios and less than 1-dB insertion losses are achieved for both polarizations. The proposed PBS exhibits tolerance in width variation, and the polarization extinction ratios remain higher than 20 dB for both polarizations when the width variation is adjusted from + 10 to -10 nm. Benefiting from the enhanced coupling by the GACCs, the polarization extinction ratio can be kept higher than 15 dB and the insertion loss is lower than 2 dB for both polarizations when the coupling length varies from 30.96 to 13.76 μm.

Abstract:In this paper, a polarization beam splitter using a pixelated directional coupler is proposed, designed, and experimentally demonstrated on silicon-on-insulator platform. According to the phase matching, structural parameters for the coupling region consisting of a straight waveguide and a pixelated waveguide are carefully selected by using direct-binary-search optimization algorithm and the finite difference time domain method, and thus the input fundamental transverse-magnetic and transverse-electric modes can be effectively separated from each other in an ultra-compact coupling length. The coupling length of our designed device is only 6 pm. Experimental results reveal that, the measured polarization extinction ratio is greater than 14.22 dB and the corresponding insertion loss is smaller than 1.36 dB within a bandwidth from 1527 to 1580 nm for the fabricated device operating in transverse-electric polarization, while the measured polarization extinction ratio and insertion loss are respectively larger than 14.47 dB and lower than 1.53 dB from 1527 to 1580 nm for the fabricated device operating in transverse-magnetic polarization.

Abstract:An ultra-broadband polarization beam splitter (PBS) with low excess loss (EL) and a high extinction ratio (ER) is proposed and demonstrated for the case with 340 nm thick silicon-on-insulator waveguides. Here the PBS is realized by using cascaded adiabatic dual-core tapers, which consist of a strip core and a subwavelength-grating core. For the designed PBS, which has a 33.6 µm long mode-evolution region, the ELs are ${ \lt }{0.3}\;{\rm dB}$<0.3dB, and the ERs are ${ \gt }{20}\;{\rm dB}$>20dB for both TE and TM polarizations in an ultra-broad bandwidth of ${ \gt }{270}\;{\rm nm}$>270nm (1400-1670 nm) in theory. For the fabricated PBS, the measured bandwidths for achieving ERs of ${\sim}{20}$∼20 and ${\sim}{25}\;{\rm dB}$∼25dB are 240 and 220 nm, while the 1 dB bandwidth is as large as 230 nm, which are the largest bandwidths reported to date, to the best of our knowledge.

Abstract:We proposed and experimentally demonstrated high-performance 1550- and 1310-nm silicon polarization splitter-rotators (PSRs) with optimized tapers. Each PSR consists of a particle swarm optimization (PSO)-based bi-level taper and shortcuts to an adiabaticity (STA)-based ridge-waveguide coupler. Ridge waveguides are introduced to increase the coupling coefficient of the STA-based coupler. The measured polarization conversion loss and polarization crosstalk are less than 0.74 and -20 dB, respectively, in the wavelength range of 1500-1600 nm for the 1550-nm PSR, and less than 1 and -23 dB, respectively, in the wavelength range of 1260-1340 nm for the 1310-nm PSR. Abstract:In this Letter, a 1 × 3 polarization-insensitive optical power splitter based on cascaded tapered silicon waveguides is proposed and experimentally demonstrated on a silicon-on-insulator platform. By utilizing the particle swarm optimization algorithm and the finite difference time domain method, the structural parameters of the coupling regions are carefully designed to achieve polarization-insensitive property, compact size, low insertion loss, high uniformity, and broad bandwidth. The coupling length can be as short as 7.3 µm. Our measurement results show that, at 1550 nm, the insertion losses of the fabricated device operating in transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarizations are, respectively, 0.068 dB and 0.62 dB. Within a bandwidth from 1525 to 1575 nm, the insertion loss is lower than 0.82 dB and the uniformity is less than 1 dB for the fabricated device operating in TE polarization, while the fabricated device operating in TM polarization can have an insertion loss smaller than 1.50 dB and a uniformity lower than 1 dB from 1528 to 1582 nm.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a broadband silicon-based polarization beam splitter (PBS) by using cascaded tapered bent directional couplers (DCs). In our device, the TM-polarized light is efficiently cross coupled to the cross port due to the strong coupling in the DCs, while the TE-polarized light goes through the DC with weak coupling and outputs at the through port. This device can achieve a broad bandwidth performance and support O-, S-, C-, and L-band operations, with acceptable extinction ratios (ERs) and insertion losses (ILs). For both TE and TM polarizations, the simulation results show that ERs are ≥10.1 dB and ILs are ≤1.33 dB in 1280-1600 nm. In the measurement, for the TE polarization, an ER ≥10.94 dB and an IL ≤1.61 dB are obtained in 1280-1360 nm, while an ER ≥11.98 dB and an IL ≤1.39 dB are measured in 1510-1590 nm. For the TM polarization, an ER ≥12.25 dB and an IL ≤2.22 dB are obtained in 1280-1360 nm, while an ER ≥18.93 dB and an IL ≤1.22 dB are measured in 1510-1590 nm.

Abstract:A novel polarization beam splitter based on an anti-symmetric sidewall Bragg grating in a multimode silicon-on-insulator strip waveguide is demonstrated. Anti-symmetric spatially periodic refractive-index perturbations are designed for strong coupling between the fundamental (TE0) and the first-order transverse electric modes (TE1), while not for transfer magnetic modes. An adiabatic coupler is cascaded at the input-port, so as to drop the TE1 reflection. The Bragg grating has a compact length of ∼20 μm (55 periods). The polarization isolations of the through- and drop-ports at the wavelength of 1557 nm are 34 and 31 dB, respectively. A broad bandwidth of 64 nm and a large fabrication tolerance of 80 nm for polarization isolation over 20 dB are also achieved.

Abstract:We designed and demonstrated TE-mode arbitrary power splitters based on adiabatic mode evolution. The power splitters are designed with a footprint of smaller than 12 × 2.9 μm2, fabricated on a 400-nm silicon-on-insulator platform, requiring only a single etch step. The optimization process and the conditions for arbitrary-power splitting are performed using three-dimensional-FDTD simulations. We prove this concept through the fabrication of asymmetrical adiabatic evolution-based power splitters with splitting ratios of 50:50, 60:40, and 70:30. The fabricated devices are shown to agree closely with simulation results. Broadband operation with low insertion loss of 0.11–0.6 dB is demonstrated across the 3.66–3.89 μm wavelength range (230 nm). This component has applications in a multitude of areas such as spectroscopic optical sensing and optical phased arrays photonic integrated circuits etc.

Abstract:The 2 μm waveband is considered to have great potential in optical communications. Driven by the demands on high-performance functional devices in this spectral band, various integrated photonic components have been demonstrated. In this work, an analog and digital topology optimization method is proposed to design an ultra-broadband polarization beam splitter at the 2 μm waveband. Within an optical bandwidth of 213 nm, the excess losses of TE and TM modes are <0.53 dB and 0.3 dB, respectively. The corresponding polarization extinction ratios are >16.5 dB and 18.1 dB. The device has a very compact footprint of only 2.52 µm × 5.4 µm. According to our best knowledge, this is a benchmark demonstration of an ultra-broadband and ultra-compact polarization beam splitter enabled by the proposed optimization method.

The realised PBS has a footprint as small as 3 x 22.5 mu m, a high extinction ratio (> 20 dB) and a low excess loss (similar to 1 dB) are obtained over a broad band of similar to 60 nm for both transverse-electric and TM polarisations.

Abstract:Based on the traditional directional coupler, we proposed a scheme to design on-chip polarization beam splitters using an inverse design method. In our scheme, the coupling area of the designed devices are only 0.48 μm×6.4 μm. By manipulating the refractive index of the coupling region, the devices can work in C-band, L-band, O-band, or any other communication band. Different from conventional design methods, which need to adjust the design parameters artificially, if the initial conditions are determined, the proposed scheme can automatically adjust the design parameters of devices according to specific requirements. The simulation results show that the insertion losses of the designed polarization beam splitters can be less than 0.4 dB (0.35 dB) for TE (TM) mode at the wavelengths of 1310, 1550, and 1600 nm, and the extinction ratios are larger than 19.9 dB for the TE and TM modes at all three wavelengths. Besides, the extinction ratios of both polarization states are more than 14.5 dB within the wavelength range of 1286–1364 nm, 1497–1568 nm, and 1553–1634 nm. At the same time, the insertion losses are smaller than 0.46 dB.
