Abstract:A multi-channel mode (de) multiplexer based on the super-mode evolution in cascaded dual-core adiabatic tapers is designed and realized with ultrathin (similar to 50 nm) siliconon-insulator nanowire waveguides. This dual-core adiabatic taper is designed optimally, so that all the supermodes are confined in the wide core at the input end and the highest-order supermode is localized in the narrow core at the output end. In this way, the highest-order supermode is dropped as the fundamental mode at the cross port. As an example, a (de) multiplexer with three mode channels is designed and fabricated. From the measured spectral responses, the fabricated device has a crosstalk lower than -20 dB and an excess loss less than 0.2 dB in a bandwidth of similar to 65 nm. Abstract:A dual-polarization 10-channel mode (de)multiplexer is proposed and realized with cascaded dual-core adiabatic tapers on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. The mode demultiplexer has a 2.3m-wide multimode bus waveguide, which supports six mode-channels of TE polarization and four mode-channels of TM polarization. These ten mode-channels are (de)multiplexed with five cascaded dual-core adiabatic tapers based on SOI nanowires. The widths for these dual-cores are chosen optimally according to the dispersion curves of the dual-core SOI nanowire, so that the desired highest-order modes of TE- and TM-polarizations are extracted simultaneously. These two extracted mode-channels are coupled very efficiently to the fundamental modes of TE- and TM-polarizations (TE0 and TM0) in the narrow waveguide, respectively, which are then separated by using a polarization beam splitter based on bent directional couplers. A chip consisting of a pair of 10-channel mode (de)multiplexers is fabricated and then tested with data transmission of 30Gbps/channel. The measurement results show that all TM- and TE mode-channels have low crosstalks (-15 approximate to-25dB) and low excess losses (0.2 approximate to 1.8dB) over a broad wavelength band of approximate to 90nm, which makes it WDM (wavelength-division-multiplexing)-compatible and thus suitable for high capacity on-chip optical interconnects.

Abstract:Broadband, low-loss and low-crosstalk silicon mode (de) multiplexers with optimized tapers based on shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA) are proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The measured insertion losses and crosstalks are less than 1.1 dB and -24 dB, respectively, for the five two-mode mode-division-multiplexing (MDM) links over wavelengths ranging from 1500 nm to 1600 nm. The four-mode MDM link showed measured insertion losses and crosstalks less than 1.3 dB and -23 dB, respectively, within the same wavelength range. The method paves the way for future adaptation of the STA protocols to various components.

Abstract:We propose a low-crosstalk and broadband mode (de)multiplexer. It is designed by cascading mode (de)interleavers utilizing silicon waveguide asymmetric Y-junctions. Asymmetric Y-junctions of each stage are modular. For each asymmetric Y-junction, the even (odd) modes of the stem separated from the odd (even) modes evolve into the low-order modes of the wide (narrow) arm by controlling the widths of the two arms, and vice versa. A four-channel mode (de)multiplexer for TE polarization is analyzed as an example. Simulations show the four-channel mode (de)multiplexer pair has a low crosstalk (<−14.1dB) over a common spectral bandwidth of 280nm.

Abstract:Asymmetrical directional couplers aided with subwavelength sidewall corrugations are used to realize ultra-compact silicon mode (de)multiplexers at C-band. Three mode (de)multiplexers with ultra-short coupling lengths of 5.6/6.5/7.7 μm are designed to enable low-loss mode conversions between TE0 and TE1/2/3 modes. They are then cascaded to build a four-channel mode-division-multiplexing (MDM) link. The four mode channels present minimal on-chip insertion losses of 0.2/0.7/0.7/0.9 dB at their peak wavelengths. Measured cross talk levels of the four mode channels are better than -18.0/-19.1/-16.0/-18.2 dB within the wavelength range from 1530 nm to 1580 nm.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate broadband silicon mode (de)multiplexers based on the optimization of system adiabaticity using shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA). Abstract:An on-chip three-mode division multiplexing circuit using a simple ADC-based TE 0 & TE 1 & TE 2 (de)multiplexer is demonstrated to improve the link capacity of on-chip optical interconnects. The proposed (de)multiplexer does not contain any tapered waveguide which is different from the previous mode (de)multiplexer based on ADCs. Here, we choose multimode waveguide width first and then confirm corresponding width of the other two waveguides. Thus the bus waveguide without any tapers can not only reduce complexity of (de)multiplexer but also reduce difficulty of the fabrication. Our simulation results show that the hybrid multiplexer has relatively low loss and low crosstalk about −40 dB, −26.99 dB and −28.72 dB for each mode around 1550 nm with a width-variation w =±25 nm. These properties make the proposed mode-(de)multiplexer suitable for application in high-capacity data transmission.

Abstract:In this paper, a two-mode (de)multiplexer utilizing the coupling between tapered waveguides and a wide multimode waveguide is designed and experimentally demonstrated. The tapered waveguides are composed of a reverse-tapered waveguide and a narrow tapered waveguide. The proposed mode (de)multiplexer is fabricated on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer in a commercial 0.18-mu m CMOS-compatible process. The qualitative functionality of the device is mainly determined by the width of the large end of the reverse-tapered waveguide. Experimental results show that the demultiplexing crosstalk of a pair of tapered-coupler-based two-mode (de)multiplexers is lower than -13.5 dB within a bandwidth from 1528 nm to 1570 nm and less than -16.6 dB from 1540 nm to 1560 nm.

Abstract:We present an ultra-broadband and low-modal-crosstalk mode multiplexer based on cascaded vertical directional couplers formed by adiabatic-tapered waveguides without mode conversion. The input and output ports of the mode multiplexer are designed in the same planar layer to meet the standard package requirement. We design and fabricate a three-mode mode multiplexer, which serves to spatially combine and separate the E11, E21 and E12 modes in the few-mode-core outputs without mode conversion with polymer material, where adiabatic tapers are utilized in the design of directional coupler to extend the operation wavelength and two pairs of directional couplers serve to suppress the modal crosstalks. We fabricate a typical device to demonstrate the idea. The fabricated device has a length of 29 mm, which provides coupling ratios higher than 97% and modal crosstalks lower than – 19.6 dB over the C+L band and beyond with weak polarization dependence. The proposed mode multiplexer is fiber capable and allows to connect with the few-mode fibers directly by the use of fan-in and fan-out technology. The proposed mode multiplexer is simple, scalable, and effective to extend the operation wavelength as well as suppressing the modal crosstalks, which provides a powerful device to manipulate the modes in a mode division multiplexing system and an effective method to realize an all-optical chip for simplifying the Multi-Input Multi-Output signal processing with low power consumption.

Abstract:A mode-(de)multiplexer with low loss and large spectral bandwidth is proposed. The device is designed by utilizing a structure with cascaded asymmetric Y-junctions. By carefully controlling the widths of the wide and narrow arms of the Y-junctions, the fundamental mode of a narrow arm excites the higher-order mode of its stem in the multiplexing case, and a high-order mode of the stem separated from other lower-order modes evolves into the fundamental mode of the narrow arm in the demultiplexing case. As an example, a 1 × 4 mode-(de)multiplexer is analyzed by using the beam propagation method. Simulation results show the demultiplexed crosstalk is lower than -21.8 dB, under a common spectral bandwidth of 140 nm. The insertion loss is negligible.

Abstract:A three-mode (de)multiplexer based on two cascaded asymmetric Y junctions is proposed and experimentally demonstrated on a silicon-on-insulator platform for mode-division multiplexing applications. Within a bandwidth from 1537 to 1566 nm, the best demultiplexing crosstalk of the fabricated device, composed of a three-mode multiplexer, a multimode straight waveguide, and a three-mode demultiplexer, is up to -31.5 dB, while in the worst case it is -9.7 dB. The measured maximum insertion loss is about 5.7 dB at a wavelength of 1550 nm. The mode crosstalk and insertion loss can be further improved by high-quality fabrication processes. Abstract:A simple and low-crosstalk 1 × 4 silicon mode (de)multiplexer based on multimode grating-assisted-couplers is proposed. Mode transitions can be flexibly controlled by designing the grating period at the phase-matching condition. Due to the contra-directional coupling, precise control of the coupling strength and the coupling length are not needed in the system. Calculation results show that the insertion loss and the 3 dB bandwidths of the device are 0.2 dB and 3.7 nm, 0.34 dB and 7.6 nm, and 0.21 dB and 11.8 nm for the channels which (de)multiplex to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd modes of the bus waveguide, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, a design of a silicon mode (de)multiplexer based on cascaded counter-tapered couplers is proposed and investigated. By using the particle swarm optimization algorithm and finite difference time domain method, structural parameters of each counter-tapered coupler in our proposed mode (de)multiplexer are optimized so that high conversion efficiencies can be obtained and coupling lengths can be significantly shortened. The coupling lengths of counter-tapered couplers in the proposed silicon four-mode (de)multiplexer operating in transverse-electric polarization are 8 μm, 9 μm, and 10 μm. The corresponding conversion efficiencies are respectively 98.98%, 99.98%, and 98.68%. Experimental results show that, the fabricated device exhibits a demultiplexed crosstalk of -32.76 dB, -27.10 dB, -32.45 dB, or -33.29 dB at 1550 nm wavelength, when the fundamental transverse-electric mode is respectively launched into the ports Input0, Input1, Input2, or Input3. The measured demultiplexed crosstalk is less than -15.15 dB from 1525 to 1596 nm and lower than -18.12 dB from 1525 to 1561 nm.

Abstract:A broadband two-mode multi/demultiplexer using asymmetric Y-junctions is designed and experimentally demonstrated on a silicon-on-insulator platform for on-chip mode-division multiplexing applications. Within a bandwidth from 1513 to 1619 nm, the fabricated device, which consists of a two-mode multiplexer, a multimode straight waveguide, and a two-mode demultiplexer, exhibits demultiplexing crosstalk of less than -9.1 dB. The demultiplexing crosstalk as low as -42.1 dB, lower than -12.8 dB over the C band can be obtained. The measured insertion loss varies from 0.40 to 0.56 dB at a wavelength of 1550 nm. A transmission experiment of 10 Gbit/s electrical signals carried on TE0 and TE1 modes is successfully achieved with open and clear eye diagrams. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We propose a three-port silicon mode-(de)interleaver (TSMIL) using an asymmetric multi-arm Y-junction to flexibly address optical modes and efficiently increase the ports with less cascaded stages in mode-division multiplexing transmission. The design criteria developed for multi-port mode-(de)interleaving is presented. The qualitative functionality of the device is mainly determined by the widths of the arms. The example of a six-mode TSMIL is designed and analyzed in detail. Numerical simulations show that a low excess loss (<1dB) and a low mode crosstalk (<−17dB) over a 60nm wavelength range can be obtained.

Abstract:A monolithically integrated 32-channel hybrid (de)multiplexer on silicon is proposed and experimentally demonstrated to enable wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) and mode-division multiplexing (MDM) simultaneously for a large capacity of optical interconnect links. The proposed (de)multiplexer consists of a four-channel mode (de)multiplexer based on cascaded asymmetric directional couplers and eight-channel wavelength-division-(de)multiplexers based on two microring resonator (MRR) arrays with a channel spacing of 2 nm. These MRRs are realized with a bending radius of as small as $4~\mu \text{m}$ by introducing a multimode microring waveguide so that a large free spectral range (~24 nm) is enabled for transverse magnetic polarization. Furthermore, each MRR works bi-directionally and provides two drop ports from which the same wavelength-channel from two of the mode-channels is dropped separately. For the fabricated 32-channel hybrid MDM-WDM (de)multiplexer, the excess loss is <−4.5 dB, the inter-mode crosstalk is <−18 dB, and the crosstalks between the adjacent and non-adjacent wavelength-channels are ~−20 and <−25 dB, respectively.
