Abstract:A simple and low-crosstalk 1 × 4 silicon mode (de)multiplexer based on multimode grating-assisted-couplers is proposed. Mode transitions can be flexibly controlled by designing the grating period at the phase-matching condition. Due to the contra-directional coupling, precise control of the coupling strength and the coupling length are not needed in the system. Calculation results show that the insertion loss and the 3 dB bandwidths of the device are 0.2 dB and 3.7 nm, 0.34 dB and 7.6 nm, and 0.21 dB and 11.8 nm for the channels which (de)multiplex to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd modes of the bus waveguide, respectively.

Abstract:We propose a nonreciprocal optical add-drop multiplexer with silicon waveguide, which is realized by grating assisted coupler employing magneto-optical nonceciprocal phase shift. This device can achieve different adding or dropping peak wavelengths when light is launched in the forward-directed and backward-directed propagation. The calculation results show that the shift of the different dropping peak wavelengths is up to 0.7nm. Also, we demonstrate its applications for narrowband optical isolators and circulators. This work demonstrates that on-chip nonreciprocal optical add-drop multiplexers and optical isolations can be implemented with the proposed device, which has promising applications for optical communication systems and photonic integrated devices.

Abstract:In this paper, a design of a silicon mode (de)multiplexer based on cascaded counter-tapered couplers is proposed and investigated. By using the particle swarm optimization algorithm and finite difference time domain method, structural parameters of each counter-tapered coupler in our proposed mode (de)multiplexer are optimized so that high conversion efficiencies can be obtained and coupling lengths can be significantly shortened. The coupling lengths of counter-tapered couplers in the proposed silicon four-mode (de)multiplexer operating in transverse-electric polarization are 8 μm, 9 μm, and 10 μm. The corresponding conversion efficiencies are respectively 98.98%, 99.98%, and 98.68%. Experimental results show that, the fabricated device exhibits a demultiplexed crosstalk of -32.76 dB, -27.10 dB, -32.45 dB, or -33.29 dB at 1550 nm wavelength, when the fundamental transverse-electric mode is respectively launched into the ports Input0, Input1, Input2, or Input3. The measured demultiplexed crosstalk is less than -15.15 dB from 1525 to 1596 nm and lower than -18.12 dB from 1525 to 1561 nm.

Abstract:Asymmetrical directional couplers aided with subwavelength sidewall corrugations are used to realize ultra-compact silicon mode (de)multiplexers at C-band. Three mode (de)multiplexers with ultra-short coupling lengths of 5.6/6.5/7.7 μm are designed to enable low-loss mode conversions between TE0 and TE1/2/3 modes. They are then cascaded to build a four-channel mode-division-multiplexing (MDM) link. The four mode channels present minimal on-chip insertion losses of 0.2/0.7/0.7/0.9 dB at their peak wavelengths. Measured cross talk levels of the four mode channels are better than -18.0/-19.1/-16.0/-18.2 dB within the wavelength range from 1530 nm to 1580 nm.

Abstract:We propose a low-crosstalk and broadband mode (de)multiplexer. It is designed by cascading mode (de)interleavers utilizing silicon waveguide asymmetric Y-junctions. Asymmetric Y-junctions of each stage are modular. For each asymmetric Y-junction, the even (odd) modes of the stem separated from the odd (even) modes evolve into the low-order modes of the wide (narrow) arm by controlling the widths of the two arms, and vice versa. A four-channel mode (de)multiplexer for TE polarization is analyzed as an example. Simulations show the four-channel mode (de)multiplexer pair has a low crosstalk (<−14.1dB) over a common spectral bandwidth of 280nm.

Abstract:An on-chip three-mode division multiplexing circuit using a simple ADC-based TE 0 & TE 1 & TE 2 (de)multiplexer is demonstrated to improve the link capacity of on-chip optical interconnects. The proposed (de)multiplexer does not contain any tapered waveguide which is different from the previous mode (de)multiplexer based on ADCs. Here, we choose multimode waveguide width first and then confirm corresponding width of the other two waveguides. Thus the bus waveguide without any tapers can not only reduce complexity of (de)multiplexer but also reduce difficulty of the fabrication. Our simulation results show that the hybrid multiplexer has relatively low loss and low crosstalk about −40 dB, −26.99 dB and −28.72 dB for each mode around 1550 nm with a width-variation w =±25 nm. These properties make the proposed mode-(de)multiplexer suitable for application in high-capacity data transmission.

Abstract:A three-mode (de)multiplexer based on two cascaded asymmetric Y junctions is proposed and experimentally demonstrated on a silicon-on-insulator platform for mode-division multiplexing applications. Within a bandwidth from 1537 to 1566 nm, the best demultiplexing crosstalk of the fabricated device, composed of a three-mode multiplexer, a multimode straight waveguide, and a three-mode demultiplexer, is up to -31.5 dB, while in the worst case it is -9.7 dB. The measured maximum insertion loss is about 5.7 dB at a wavelength of 1550 nm. The mode crosstalk and insertion loss can be further improved by high-quality fabrication processes. Abstract:A small silicon mode (de)multiplexer with cascaded asymmetrical directional couplers is demonstrated experimentally. As an example, a four channel mode (de)multiplexer is designed and realized for TM polarization. The fabricated mode (de)multiplexer has a low excess loss (<1 dB) as well as low crosstalk (<= 23 dB) over a broad wavelength range (similar to 20 nm). Abstract:In this paper, a two-mode (de)multiplexer utilizing the coupling between tapered waveguides and a wide multimode waveguide is designed and experimentally demonstrated. The tapered waveguides are composed of a reverse-tapered waveguide and a narrow tapered waveguide. The proposed mode (de)multiplexer is fabricated on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer in a commercial 0.18-mu m CMOS-compatible process. The qualitative functionality of the device is mainly determined by the width of the large end of the reverse-tapered waveguide. Experimental results show that the demultiplexing crosstalk of a pair of tapered-coupler-based two-mode (de)multiplexers is lower than -13.5 dB within a bandwidth from 1528 nm to 1570 nm and less than -16.6 dB from 1540 nm to 1560 nm.

Abstract:An 8-channel hybrid (de)multiplexer to simultaneously achieve mode- and polarization-division-(de)multiplexing is proposed and demonstrated experimentally on a silicon-on-insulator platform to improve the link capacity of an on-chip optical interconnect. The present hybrid (de)multiplexer has four channels for each polarization. A polarization beam splitter based on a three-waveguide coupler is used to combine/separate the fundamental modes of TE- and TM-polarizations (TE0 and TM0). Six asymmetric directional couplers are cascaded for (de)multiplexing the high-order modes (TE1, TE2, TE3, TM1, TM2, and TM3). The experimental results show all eight channels have low loss and low crosstalk (<-10dB) over a approximate to 30nm wavelength range.

Abstract:A compact 64-channel hybrid demultiplexer based on silicon-on-insulator nanowires is proposed and demonstrated experimentally to enable wavelength-division-multiplexing and mode-division-multiplexing simultaneously in order to realize an ultra-large capacity on-chip optical-interconnect link. The present hybrid demultiplexer consists of a 4-channel mode multiplexer constructed with cascaded asymmetrical directional-couplers and two bi-directional 17x17 arrayed-waveguide gratings (AWGs) with 16 channels. Here each bi-directional AWG is equivalent as two identical 1x16 AWGs. The measured excess loss and the crosstalk for the monolithically integrated 64-channel hybrid demultiplexer are about -5dB and -14dB, respectively. Better performance can be achieved by minimizing the imperfections (particularly in AWGs) during the fabrication processes.

Abstract:In this letter, we demonstrate an optical demultiplexer on the silicon-on-insulator material employing the turning-mirror-integrated arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG). We substitute the bent waveguide array in the traditional AWG configuration by adopting the structure of the turning-mirror-integrated straight waveguides. Description of the design procedure is provided. The crosstalk of the fabricated 1/spl times/4 AWG is better than -23.1 dB. The typical on-chip insertion loss is about -8 dB and the output nonuniformity is less than 0.4 dB. The polarization-dependent central wavelength shift is about 0.068 nm.

Abstract:A novel 64-channel silicon hybrid demultiplexer is proposed and demonstrated by utilizing a 1×4 ADC-type mode demultiplexer and two 17×17 bi-directional AWGs. With the proposed design, the hybrid demultiplexer becomes very compact and this issue of the channel-wavelength's misalignment is also relaxed greatly in comparison with the previous design. The insertion loss and crosstalk for the fabricated hybrid demultiplexer are around −5dB and −14dB, respectively.

Abstract:We present a mode converter and demultiplexer structure for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transmission by employing multimode interference (MMI) on Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) platform. The mode converter and demultiplexer have a compact size of less than 2.7 μm × 43.7 μm. Moreover, the crosstalk between neighboring wavelength channel within C band (1530 nm to 1570 nm) can be reduced by utilizing the tapered phase shifter cascaded with MMI. The simulated results indicate that this structure has a low insertion loss of less than 1 dB, a low crosstalk of better than ?15 dB and a relatively high fabrication tolerance of ~10 nm. Such structure may find many potential applications in silicon photonic integrated devices.
