Abstract:A 1×N demodulator for both DPSK and DQPSK formats is proposed in this paper. The PDFS of such demodulator is less than 300MHz, through introducing LC phase retarder, fast tuning time of 50ms is realized. © OSA/OFC/NFOEC 2011.

Abstract:This paper provides an efficient low complexity soft-decision demapper algorithm for computing the log-likelihood-ratios (LLRs) of the 8PSK demodulations in the DVB-S2 standard. The proposed method has linear complexity, avoids the multiple square operations in the classical method and reduces the number of compare-select operations by half compared to traditional LLR computation algorithms. The demapper using the proposed method has been verified on Altera FPGA.

Abstract:A novel architecture of all-digital polar transmitters is proposed, mainly composed of an all digital PLL (ADPLL) for phase modulation, a 1-bit low-pass delta sigma (ΔΣ) modulator for envelop modulation and a high efficiency class-D PA. The low noise ADPLL and high oversample ΔΣ modulator relax filter design, enabling the use of a on-chip filter. The differential signaling scheme enhances the power of the fundamental tone and suppresses DC and high harmonics. The transmitter was fabricated in a 90nm digital CMOS process, occupying 1.4 mm2. The measurement results demonstrate effectiveness of the architecture. The digital transmitter consumes 58 mW power from a 1 V supply, delivering a 6.81-dBm output.

Abstract:We report a new differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) receiver design which utilizes a single demodulator and can receive polarization division multiplexed signals. This system provides less than 3 dB power penalty at bit-error rate (BER) of 10−9 after 60 km of optical fiber transmission.

Abstract:The paper presents the design of all-digital QPSK demodulator based on DVB-S specification and gives the detailed expatiation for algorithms and architecture of two sub-loops: Frequency Recovery Loop and Phase Trace Loop. In order to meet the requirement of SNR, a self-designing structure of Frequency Corrector is proposed. The experiment result shows that the whole system totally satisfies the requirement of SNR described in DVB-S spec.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate generation of optical carrier suppressed-optical differential phase-shift keying (OCS-oDPSK) modulation format in radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems using one single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). This scheme realizes up-conversion of baseband data for down-link wireless service delivery, generation of remote local oscillator (LO) signal for down-conversion of uplink radio frequency (RF) signal, and remodulation of down-converted uplink data, thus lowering the cost of base stations (BSs) in full-duplex RoF systems. The proposed scheme is expected to be simple and compact due to the use of a single MZM. Furthermore, the OCS-oDPSK generation principle is extended to obtain an OCS-optical differential quadrature phase-shift keying (OCS-oDQPSK) signal by employing a dual-parallel MZM (DPMZM), which is useful to deliver multiple wireless services on the same RF carrier.

Abstract:This paper describes a synchronization scheme and its parallel implementation structure suitable for an all-digital, high data-rate parallel OQPSK receiver with low discernible signals. Conventional synchronization scheme of OQPSK receiver with Costas phase recover loop followed by Gardner's timing recover loop can hardly converge when SNR is lower than 3dB. The proposed synchronization scheme in this paper may operate with very low discernible signals with the value of E b/N o as low as -2dB, with short acquisitive time. Moreover, the paper proposes a parallel demodulator architecture that based on block digital filter to make possible the FPGA implementation of the high data-rate demodulator, with date rate as high as several hundred megabits per second. Fixed-point simulation shows that the proposed demodulator only degrades about 0.2dB SNR comparing with theoretical performance over AWGN channels without acquisition preambles. © 2006 IEEE.

Abstract:Through the research of 8PSK demodulation algorithm including carrier phase recovery and clock timing recovery, an all-digital 8PSK demodulator adaptive to next generation Digital Satellite Television Standard DVB-S2 is proposed. The carrier recovery algorithm consists of a frequency detector (FD) loop and a modified phase-frequency detector (PFD) loop. Its tracking range exceeds one time symbol-rate. The Gardner TED algorithm is used in clock timing recovery loop. All algorithms are prone to hardware implementation. By means of analysis and computer fixed point simulation, the optimal parameter of each loop has been determined. The symbol error performance under AWGN is also presented. The result of simulations indicates that the demodulator performance of SER (symbol error rate) is close to theoretical value and the architecture is realizable.

Abstract:A novel 2N bit bipolar photonic digital-to-analog converter (PDAC) scenario based on the optical differential quadrature phase shift keying (ODQPSK) modulation coupled with differential detection is proposed. Compared with other proposed schemes, this bipolar PDAC has a greater dynamic range and a larger noise margin with good scalabilities both in speed and resolution. We demonstrate a 4 bit PDAC in a proof-of-principle experiment at a sampling rate of 2.5 GS/s.

Abstract:We propose a reconfigurable 8PSK/8QAM modulator implementation by employing two cascaded QPSK modulators with an interferometer in between. With simple control of bias voltage of the interferometer, a flexible switching between 8PSK/8QAM can be achieved. The transmission performance of the generated 8PSK/8QAM signals over different link scenarios is compared via numerical simulations. The results reveal that the proposed implementation has the capability of maximizing transmission distance in the case of dynamic optical network.

Abstract:We propose a scheme for mitigating Rayleigh backscattering noise and demodulating differential phaseshift keying (DPSK) signals in wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical networks (WDM-PONs) with injection-locked Fabry-Perot laser diodes (FP-LDs).Signal demodulation and wavelength conversion are simultaneously realized on the basis of the frequency deviation and red shift of longitude modes in the FP-LDs.Experimental results demonstrate that the demodulation and wavelength conversion of 2.5-Gb/s DPSK signals are achieved.A power penalty of about 1.6 dB at a bit error rate of 10 -9 is measured after transmission over 25-km single mode fiber.

Abstract:In high dynamic circumstance, the receiving signals suffer from severe Doppler spread, which is time-variant and nonlinear. Furthermore, such Doppler spread can't be compensated accurately in non-cooperative situations. As a result, traditional demodulation methods which require carrier synchronization will be quite limited in use. To deal with this problem, this paper proposes a new demodulation algorithm based on the instant frequency distribution characteristics of Differential Phase Shift Keying (DPSK) signals, as well as wavelet transform. A real experiment and some simulation results show that, the newly proposed algorithm is still applicable in high dynamic circumstance, and its symbol error rate is only 3 dB worse than the corresponding theoretical lower bound.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel scheme which can simultaneously realize wavelength-preserving and phase-preserving amplitude noise compression of a 40 Gb/s distorted non-return-to-zero differential-phase-shift keying (NRZ-DPSK) signal. In the scheme, two semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) are exploited. The first one (SOA1) is used to generate the inverted signal based on SOA's transient cross-phase modulation (T-XPM) effect and the second one (SOA2) to regenerate the distorted NRZ-DPSK signal using SOA's cross-gain compression (XGC) effect. In the experiment, the bit error ratio (BER) measurements show that power penalties of constructive and destructive demodulation at BER of 10-9 are -1.75 and -1.01 dB, respectively. As the nonlinear effects and the requirements of the two SOAs are completely different, quantum-well (QW) structures has been separately optimized. A complicated theoretical model by combining QW band structure calculation with SOA's dynamic model is exploited to optimize the SOAs, in which both interband effect (carrier density variation) and intraband effect (carrier temperature variation) are taken into account. Regarding SOA1, we choose the tensile strained QW structure and large optical confinement factor to enhance the T-XPM effect. Regarding SOA2, the compressively strained QW structure is selected to reduce the impact of excess phase noise induced by amplitude fluctuations. Exploiting the optimized QW SOAs, better amplitude regeneration performance is demonstrated successfully through numerical simulation. The proposed scheme is intrinsically stable comparing with the interferometer structure and can be integrated on a chip, making it a practical candidate for all-optical amplitude regeneration of high-speed NRZ-DPSK signal.

Abstract:We investigate the use of differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) with a reduced modulation depth (RMD) as the downstream modulation format to enhance the tolerance to both chromatic dispersion and remodulation timing misalignment. Despite the RMD, in each optical network unit the demodulated DPSK signal from the destructive port of the delay-interferometer still maintains a high extinction ratio (ER), whereas the signal from the constructive port has a very low ER and can be readily remodulated by the upstream signal. Error-free operation at 10 Gb/s was achieved in a 20-km-reach experiment without dispersion compensation and remodulation synchronization.

Abstract:A novel 2-bit PDAC based on quadrature phase modulation and differential demodulation together with balanced detection is proposed and experimentally demonstrated at sampling rates of 2.5GS/s and 10GS/s. The simulation results of expanded 4-bit PDAC from the 2-bit PDAC unit by using two channels of incoherent light with different wavelength are presented. This PDAC scheme is simple, compact and effective with high expansibility. Compared with other approaches, this method's output signal has a greater dynamic range and a higher noise margin.
