Abstract:We investigate the use of differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) with a reduced modulation depth (RMD) as the downstream modulation format to enhance the tolerance to both chromatic dispersion and remodulation timing misalignment. Despite the RMD, in each optical network unit the demodulated DPSK signal from the destructive port of the delay-interferometer still maintains a high extinction ratio (ER), whereas the signal from the constructive port has a very low ER and can be readily remodulated by the upstream signal. Error-free operation at 10 Gb/s was achieved in a 20-km-reach experiment without dispersion compensation and remodulation synchronization.

Abstract:We, report a new approach to eliminate the extinction ratio (ER) limitation in a wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network using RZ-ASK/DPSK remodulation format corresponding to downstream/upstream signals, respectively. A model precoding method can improve the ER tolerance from 6 to 13 dB for a 40-Gb/s RZ-ASK downstream and 622-Mb/s DPSK upstream experimental transmission with <1 dB penalty. Rayleigh and stimulated Brillouin back-scattering effects are simulated and analyzed in the deployment of a bidirectional 40G Ethernet PON probably using ill practical application. Abstract:We propose a scheme for mitigating Rayleigh backscattering noise and demodulating differential phaseshift keying (DPSK) signals in wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical networks (WDM-PONs) with injection-locked Fabry-Perot laser diodes (FP-LDs).Signal demodulation and wavelength conversion are simultaneously realized on the basis of the frequency deviation and red shift of longitude modes in the FP-LDs.Experimental results demonstrate that the demodulation and wavelength conversion of 2.5-Gb/s DPSK signals are achieved.A power penalty of about 1.6 dB at a bit error rate of 10 -9 is measured after transmission over 25-km single mode fiber.

Abstract:We propose a novel scheme of Rayleigh backscattering noise-eliminated, long-reach, single-fiber, full-duplex, centralized wavelength-division multiplexed passive optical network with differential quadrature phase-shift keying (DPSK) downstream and remodulated upstream using an optical carrier-suppressed subcarrier-modulation (OCS-SCM) technique and optical interleaver. The error-free transmissions of 10-Gb/s downstream and 2.5-Gb/s upstream signals are experimentally demonstrated over 1.15-km single-fiber bidirectional SMF-28 with less than 0.5 and 1.9 dB power penalties, respectively.

The OFSK transmitter generates constant-intensity wavelength shift keying signals based on phase modulation and polarization modulation. Abstract:A novel 25-GHz-spaced dense wavelength-division multiplexing passive optical network (DWDM-PON) is proposed to improve the utilization of wavelength resource and mitigate the Rayleigh backscattering (RB) and back-reflection effects. A colorless optical network unit (ONU) is realized by remodulating the downstream (DS) signal via a gain-saturated reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA). Due to the simple interconnecting architecture at the remote node (RN), the DS and upstream (US) signals in each feed fiber (FF) are carried on different channels. Therefore, the RB and back-reflection effects are significantly reduced. The feasibility and merits of the proposed system are experimentally demonstrated with the error-free transmission of 10-Gb/s DS and 1.25-Gb/s US signals over a 25-km single-mode fiber.

Abstract:We propose a novel scheme to suppress Rayleigh noise in carrier-distributed wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical networks, by using differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) as the upstream modulation format. Due to the narrow spectrum of the distributed carrier, the Rayleigh noise towards the optical line terminal (OLT) also has narrow spectrum and can be effectively suppressed by the notch filter-like destructive port of the delay-interferometer at the OLT, which is used to demodulate the upstream DPSK signal simultaneously. Experimental demonstration of the 10-Gb/s upstream signal is achieved with less than 0.2-dB power penalty induced by Rayleigh noise after the transmission of 20-km single-mode fiber.

Abstract:We propose a delay-based multicast overlay scheme to superimpose a multicast differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) modulated signal on a point-to-point downstream inverse-return-to-zero (IRZ) modulated signal in a wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON). By adjusting the synchronization of the DPSK and the IRZ modulation on the downstream carrier, simple and flexible multicast control could be realized. We have successfully demonstrated the proposed scheme for three different traffics, namely 10-Gb/s IRZ downstream point-to-point data, 10-Gb/s DPSK downstream multicast data, and 10-Gb/s non-return-to-zero (NRZ) upstream re-modulated data, respectively. An error floor of 10(-4) is observed for the multicast data when it is disabled. The effect of timing misalignment on the downstream DPSK/IRZ orthogonal modulation and the upstream re-modulation is analyzed. We also study the case when the data rates of the multicast and downstream point-to-point data are different.

Abstract:We propose a novel architecture for wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) that can simultaneously circumvent both remodulation crosstalk and Rayleigh noise, based on self-homodyne detection and optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) remodulation. The proposed self-homodyne detection at optical network unit (ONU) requires neither frequency offset compensation nor phase noise compensation, and thus can significantly reduce system complexity and power consumption. Bidirectional transmission of 12.5 Gb/s down- and up-stream signals, via single 25 km single-mode fiber without dispersion compensation, is demonstrated in a proof-of-concept experiment. Abstract:A novel upstream data remodulation scheme with downstream ASK-DPSK modulation format is proposed for WDMPONs in this letter. And this kind of scheme is also experimentally demonstrated on one particular wavelength channel. Both the 2.5-Gb/s downstream optical DPSK signal and the 2.5-Gb/s downstream optical ASK signal are demodulated respectively at the receiving side, while part of the downstream carrier is directly remodulated by an optical intensity modulator for upstream transmission of 2.5-Gb/s data. System performance under different amplitude ratios of downstream optical ASK signal is investigated. It is shown that effective reception and robust performance can be achieved after having been transmitted for 25-km.

Abstract:With the ever-increasing bandwidth demand of the end-customers, the 100-Gb/s access solution has attracted more and more attention. In this letter, we propose a symmetric 100-Gb/s digital signal processing-enhanced time wavelength division multiplexed passive optical networ (TWDM-PON) architecture with four pairs of wavelengths. A 4 x 25-Gb/s TWDM-PON is experimentally demonstrated over a 26.7-km fiber using double sideband (DSB) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. The reflective semiconductor optical amplifier is deployed in the optical network unit (ONU) to enhance the receiver sensitivity of downstream OFDM signals, and DSB single-carrier frequency domain equalization modulation is used for upstream transmission to reduce the complexity and cost of the ONU.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel wavelength-division-multiplexing orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing passive-optical-network (WDM-OFDM-PON) architecture with centralized lightwave sources and polarization shift keying (PolSK) multicast overlay. The 10-Gb/s 16QAM-OFDM point to point (P2P) signal, 2.5-Gb/s multicast PolSK signal and 2.5-Gb/s on-off keying (OOK) upstream signal are experimentally demonstrated. After transmission over 25km standard single mode fiber (SMF), 1.5dB crosstalk between the downstream signals is eliminated by employing a low pass electrical filter at the PolSK receiver. The power penalty of the upstream OOK signal at BER of 10(-9) is less than 0.1dB.

Abstract:A novel scheme to generate, transmit, and receive an optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) continuous phase modulation (CPM) signal, which is combining minimum shift keying (MSK) coding with OFDM optical modulation, for downlink application in a 4 x 2.5-Gb/s wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) passive optical access network, is proposed and experimentally validated. We also realize wavelength remodulation for carrying upstream on-off keying (OOK) data to reduce the cost budget at the optical network unit. The experimental results show that the power penalties for the downlink and the uplink data after transmission over 25-km SMF-28 fiber are 0.1 dB and smaller than 0.4 dB, respectively.
