Abstract:We investigate the use of differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) with a reduced modulation depth (RMD) as the downstream modulation format to enhance the tolerance to both chromatic dispersion and remodulation timing misalignment. Despite the RMD, in each optical network unit the demodulated DPSK signal from the destructive port of the delay-interferometer still maintains a high extinction ratio (ER), whereas the signal from the constructive port has a very low ER and can be readily remodulated by the upstream signal. Error-free operation at 10 Gb/s was achieved in a 20-km-reach experiment without dispersion compensation and remodulation synchronization.

Abstract:We propose a scheme for mitigating Rayleigh backscattering noise and demodulating differential phaseshift keying (DPSK) signals in wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical networks (WDM-PONs) with injection-locked Fabry-Perot laser diodes (FP-LDs).Signal demodulation and wavelength conversion are simultaneously realized on the basis of the frequency deviation and red shift of longitude modes in the FP-LDs.Experimental results demonstrate that the demodulation and wavelength conversion of 2.5-Gb/s DPSK signals are achieved.A power penalty of about 1.6 dB at a bit error rate of 10 -9 is measured after transmission over 25-km single mode fiber.

Abstract:We propose a novel scheme to suppress Rayleigh noise in carrier-distributed wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical networks, by using differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) as the upstream modulation format. Due to the narrow spectrum of the distributed carrier, the Rayleigh noise towards the optical line terminal (OLT) also has narrow spectrum and can be effectively suppressed by the notch filter-like destructive port of the delay-interferometer at the OLT, which is used to demodulate the upstream DPSK signal simultaneously. Experimental demonstration of the 10-Gb/s upstream signal is achieved with less than 0.2-dB power penalty induced by Rayleigh noise after the transmission of 20-km single-mode fiber.

Abstract:A novel upstream data remodulation scheme with downstream ASK-DPSK modulation format is proposed for WDMPONs in this letter. And this kind of scheme is also experimentally demonstrated on one particular wavelength channel. Both the 2.5-Gb/s downstream optical DPSK signal and the 2.5-Gb/s downstream optical ASK signal are demodulated respectively at the receiving side, while part of the downstream carrier is directly remodulated by an optical intensity modulator for upstream transmission of 2.5-Gb/s data. System performance under different amplitude ratios of downstream optical ASK signal is investigated. It is shown that effective reception and robust performance can be achieved after having been transmitted for 25-km.

Abstract:We demonstrate the 40-Gb/s upstream transmission in the 60-km reach wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM PON) implemented by using directly modulated reflective semiconductor optical amplifiers (RSOAs) and self-homodyne receivers. It is difficult to operate the RSOA at 40 Gb/s due to its limited modulation bandwidth. To overcome this problem and generate 40-Gb/s upstream signal, we utilize the quadrature phase-shift-keying (QPSK) format and the offset polarization-division-multiplexing (PDM) technique. For this purpose, we install two RSOAs at each ONU and provide the seed light for these RSOAs by polarization-multiplexing the outputs of two lasers with a small frequency offset (20 GHz). This frequency offset is used to separate the polarization-multiplexed seed light by using a simple delay-line interferometer (DLI), instead of the polarization-beam splitter and polarization controller, at the ONU. The separated seed light is modulated by each RSOA at 20 Gb/s in the QPSK format, and then combined again by the DLI before sent back to the central office (CO). The results show that this WDM PON can support the transmission of 40-Gb/s channels spaced at 50 GHz over 60 km without using any remote optical amplifiers.

Abstract:The wavelength-division multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) is considered to be a promising method to overlay or upgrade the existing optical access network. A centralized WDM-PON in which the downstream wavelength is reused to modulate the upstream has been studied comprehensively, for same wavelength operation of both downstream and upstream, colorless operation and source-free of optical network units (ONU) can be realized in such systems. We propose a scheme of centralized WDM-PON with non-return-to-zero/continuous-wave (NRZ/CW)polarization multiplexed downstream and remodulated upstream using a CW injection-locked Fabry-Perot (FP) laser.This scheme can eliminate the crosstalk of downstream data on the upstream and get higher extinction ratio of received downstream signal. Experiment with 22.2km transmission of 10-Gb/s downstream signal and 622-Mb/s upstream signal was realized using a commercial FP laser, with power penalties of 0.2dB and 0dB respectively. 2.5-Gb/s upstream signal using an injection locked FP laser was also investigated, and 61 modes within 25.4nm span were locked with side-mode suppression ratio of above 27dB. © 2008 SPIE.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate combining differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) and duobinary transmission for the downstream in 40-Gb/s long-reach wavelength division multiplexed-passive optical networks (WDM-PONs) in order to provide robust transmission performance in the backhaul section and simple detection at the ONUs. DPSK is deployed in the trunk span as it provides stronger robustness to fiber nonlinearity. Duobinary is used in the access span where its higher chromatic dispersion tolerance relieves the need for dispersion compensation. All-optical multichannel modulation format conversion from DPSK to duobinary is realized in the local exchange in a single delay interferometer to reduce system cost. Single and multi-channel 80-km long-reach DPSK transmission and up to 5-km duobinary access transmission are experimentally demonstrated at 40 Gb/s. Abstract:Wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) is a promising architecture for next-generation access networks because of its large bandwidth, protocol transparency and scalability. In this paper, we propose a cost-effective, high-speed upstream WDM-PON scheme adopting polarization division multiplexed (PDM) on-off keying (OOK) modulation at the optical network unit (ONU) and digital coherent/self-coherent detection with a novel blind dual-modulus equalization algorithm at the optical line terminal (OLT). As such, the upstream capacity can be directly enhanced at low ONU expenditure, and receiver sensitivity as well as power budget can be also improved. Abstract:We propose a novel scheme of Rayleigh backscattering noise-eliminated, long-reach, single-fiber, full-duplex, centralized wavelength-division multiplexed passive optical network with differential quadrature phase-shift keying (DPSK) downstream and remodulated upstream using an optical carrier-suppressed subcarrier-modulation (OCS-SCM) technique and optical interleaver. The error-free transmissions of 10-Gb/s downstream and 2.5-Gb/s upstream signals are experimentally demonstrated over 1.15-km single-fiber bidirectional SMF-28 with less than 0.5 and 1.9 dB power penalties, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose to use a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) in the optical network unit (ONU) to improve the loss budget in time and wavelength division multiplexed-passive optical network (TWDM-PON) systems. The SOA boosts the upstream signal to increase the output power of the electro-absorption modulated laser (EML) and simultaneously pre-amplifies the downstream signal for sensitivity improvement. The penalty caused by cross gain modulation (XGM) effect is negligible due to the low extinction ratio (ER) of upstream signal and the large wavelength difference between upstream and downstream links. In order to achieve a higher output power, the SOA is driven into its saturation region, where the self-phase modulation (SPM) effect converts the intensity into phase information and realizes on-off-keying (OOK) to phase-shifted-keying (PSK) format conversion. In this way, the pattern effect is eliminated, which releases the requirement of gain-clamping on SOA. To further improve the loss budget of upstream link, an Erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is used in the optical line terminal (OLT) to pre-amplify the received signal. For the downstream direction, directly modulated laser (DML) is used as the laser source. Taking advantage of its carrier-less characteristic, directly modulated signal shows high tolerance to fiber nonlinearity, which could support a downstream launch power as high as + 16 dBm per channel. In addition, the signal is pre-amplified by the SOA in ONU before being detected, so the sensitivity limitation for downstream link is also removed. As a result, a truly passive symmetric 40-Gb/s TWDM-PON was demonstrated, achieving a link loss budget of 51 dB.

Abstract:We propose a novel architecture for wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) that can simultaneously circumvent both remodulation crosstalk and Rayleigh noise, based on self-homodyne detection and optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) remodulation. The proposed self-homodyne detection at optical network unit (ONU) requires neither frequency offset compensation nor phase noise compensation, and thus can significantly reduce system complexity and power consumption. Bidirectional transmission of 12.5 Gb/s down- and up-stream signals, via single 25 km single-mode fiber without dispersion compensation, is demonstrated in a proof-of-concept experiment.
