Abstract:This letter presents a low cost solution for wavelength division multiplexed orthogonal frequency division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-OFDM-PON) with widely tunable optical filter and linear small form-factor pluggable (SFP) module. With 9-nm tunable range from 1551 to 1560 nm, the tunable filter can support up to 10-channel 100-GHz spacing WDM PON system. A linear avalanche photodiode (APD) based SFP+ module is designed for optical OFDM signal demodulation, which can provide better receiver performance compared with limiting APD module. Experimental results show that ~34 dB power budget can be achieved in 4×5-Gbps WDM-OFDM-PON system, which can satisfy the transmission requirements of next generation PON system.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new structure of PON system based on coherent heterodyne receivers. The coherent detection enables a filterless ultra-dense WDM system. We simulated a 64 channel system with 10GHz channel spacing, offering symmetrical 1 Gbit/s sustained data rate per user both downlink and uplink by single fiber. The quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) modulation format is applied to downstream data for higher spectrum efficiency, while we use Amplitude Modulation (AM) on upstream data to reduce the system cost. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:Coherent detection, high-order modulation, and dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) technologies provide solutions for increasing bandwidth demand of future access networks. We experimentally demonstrate a real-time 64 x 200-Gb/s coherent ultra-dense wavelength-division (UDWDM) coherent passive optical networks (PONs) at 75-GHz channel spacing. The demonstrated downlink transmission is realized with the dual- polarization QPSK (DP-QPSK) modulation scheme. The cost is reduced by using silicon photonic integrated coherent transceiver modules and wider grid AWGs. The power budget is evaluated when all 200 channels are launched at C band. The power budget is 26 dB after 20-km G.652D standard single mode fiber (SSMF) transmission without amplifier at the receiver side under soft-decision FEC (SD-FEC) threshold of 1 x 10(-2) , and can achieve 32.5 dB with pre-amplified semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) used at the receiver side.

Abstract:We first experimentally demonstrate the ultra-dense wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network (UD-WDM-PON) system at 9.95 Gb/s per wavelength on a 12.5-GHz grid, adopting digital pre-equalization considering narrow-band optical filtering effect at the transmitter. Eight optical carriers with 12.5-GHz frequency spacing carry 9.95-Gb/s digital pre-equalized binary signals (on-off keying) and are optically filtered. 25- and 45-km single-mode fiber (SMF)-28 downlink transmissions are experimentally demonstrated. The bit-error ratio for each of the eight channels is less than 1.0 x 10(-9) after transmission over 25-km SMF-28.

Abstract:A low-complexity and cost-efficient coherent detection-based 100 Gb/s or beyond passive optical network (PON) has attracted a lot of attention in recent years, as this technology offers high receiver sensitivity, colorless frequency selectivity, and linear detection enabling channel impairment compensation in the digital domain. We experimentally demonstrate the first single-wavelength 200 Gb/s coherent PON over 20 km downstream transmission with polarization division multiplexed four-level pulsed amplitude modulation (PDM-PAM-4) signals in the C-band. The intensity modulator replaces the costly in-phase/quadrature modulator, and hardware-efficient carrier recovery technologies are used for recovery of PAM-4 symbols. By using optimized Nyquist pulse shaping, the transceiver bandwidth can be reduced to within 50 GHz. A maximum power budget of 32.5 dB can be achieved for 200 Gb/s/λ PDM-PAM-4 at a bit error rate of 1 × 10 − 2 over 20 km fiber transmission. The possibility of a 200 Gb/s/λ PON is investigated using intensity modulation and coherent detection for the first time to our knowledge.

Abstract:This paper proposes and numerically investigated a novel high-speed wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) architecture with colorless user terminals based on the use of a different modulation scheme for downstream and upstream transmission. In the central office (CO), based on the carrier suppressing functionality of Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) and differential-phase-shift-keying to amplitude-shift-keying conversion using Mach-Zehnder delay interferometer, 40-Gb/s optical frequency shift keying (FSK) is generated and employed for transmitting the downstream data. In the remote node (RN) or optical network unit (ONU), the upstream data is re-modulated at 2.5-Gb/s by an intensity modulator and sent back to CO with the same fiber. Since only one light source is needed for each WDM channel, and the MZM to generate carrier suppressed signal can be shared by all the channels, a centralized 40-Gb/s WDM-PON access system with low-cost configuration is realized. Error free transmission over 20-km SMF can be observed for both downstream and upstream signals in our simulation. © 2008 SPIE.

Abstract:A 10 Gbit/s 16-km-long reconfigurable wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) is presented empowered by a low-cost multi-channel directly modulated laser (DML) module. Compared with the case using discrete devices in conventional scheme, the proposed DML module provides a cost-effective solution with reduced complexity. The clear eye diagram and the bit error rate ( BER ) of less than 2×10 -7 with a sensitivity of −7 dBm are obtained. Due to the special packaging design, the crosstalk between channels under condition of simultaneous operation can be negligible.

Abstract:Time- and wavelength-division multiplexed passive optical network (TWDM-PON) has been selected by full service access networks as a primary solution for next generation PON stage 2 in April 2012. In this letter, we propose and demonstrate a symmetric 40-Gb/s TWDM-PON with 39-dB power budget. A reflective semiconductor optical amplifier is used in optical network unit as a pre-amplifier to enhance the sensitivity of downstream signals. For the upstream direction, a thermally-tuned directly modulated laser with 10-Gb/s modulation rate is used as upstream colorless source, and a chirp management filter is employed in optical line terminal to mitigate chromatic dispersion therefore enabling fiber transmission. Symmetric 40-Gb/s TWDM-PON is experimentally demonstrated with a power budget of 39 dB, which could support 25-km fiber transmission and 1:1000 splitting ratio.

Abstract:We introduce a novel architecture for next generation passive optical network (PON) base on the Single-carrier Frequency Division Multiple Address (SC-FDMA) technique. Both downstream and upstream SCFDMA-PON transmissions (5 Gb/s total, 2.5 Gb/s for each user) are experimentally demonstrated over 22.2 km standard single mode fiber and an additional simulated 1:32 optical splitter. We also test the tolerance range of the synchronization error and prove it matches the cyclic prefix period in our scheme, which means the packet transmission accuracy from different optical network units can be relaxed in the upstream.

Abstract:Wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) is a promising architecture for next-generation access networks because of its large bandwidth, protocol transparency and scalability. In this paper, we propose a cost-effective, high-speed upstream WDM-PON scheme adopting polarization division multiplexed (PDM) on-off keying (OOK) modulation at the optical network unit (ONU) and digital coherent/self-coherent detection with a novel blind dual-modulus equalization algorithm at the optical line terminal (OLT). As such, the upstream capacity can be directly enhanced at low ONU expenditure, and receiver sensitivity as well as power budget can be also improved. Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a very-high-throughput coherent ultradense wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network (UDWDM-PON) with its bandwidth efficiency enhanced using Nyquist-independent-sideband (N-ISB) modulation. The proposed optical line terminal (OLT) suggests 75 downlink optical subcarriers. For each optical subcarrier, there are as many as 16, 10-Gb/s N-ISB digital channels modulated on it, which can be efficiently generated using only one set of optical transmitter hardware. Experimental results show that the proposed UDWDM-PON is capable of accommodating 1200 10G users within an optical distribution network loss budget of 35.5 dB, and achieve a total throughput of 12 Tb/s and a spectral efficiency of 5.628-b/s/Hz. More importantly, the proposed system with spectral- and bandwidth-efficient N-ISB requires 16 times less downlink optical transmitters at the OLT, which can be translated into savings in cost, power consumption, and footprint. In addition, key techniques, such as N-ISB modulation in a PON system, frequency-locked optical multicarrier generation, and digital pre-equalization, are also studied.

Abstract:We introduce an "ultra-dense" concept into next-generation WDM-PON systems, which transmits a Nyquist-WDM uplink with centralized uplink optical carriers and digital coherent detection for the future access network requiring both high capacity and high spectral efficiency. 80-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) transmission of Nyquist-WDM signal with 13 coherent 25-GHz spaced wavelength shaped optical carriers individually carrying 100-Gbit/s polarization-multiplexing quadrature phase-shift keying (PM-QPSK) upstream data has been experimentally demonstrated with negligible transmission penalty. The 13 frequency-locked wavelengths with a uniform optical power level of -10 dBm and OSNR of more than 50 dB are generated from a single lightwave via a multi-carrier generator consists of an optical phase modulator (PM), a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM), and a WSS. Following spacing the carriers at the baud rate, sub-carriers are individually spectral shaped to form Nyquist-WDM. The Nyquist-WDM channels have less than 1-dB crosstalk penalty of optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) at 2 × 10(-3) bit-error rate (BER). Performance of a traditional coherent optical OFDM scheme and its restrictions on symbol synchronization and power difference are also experimentally compared and studied.
