Abstract:The wavelength-division multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) is considered to be a promising method to overlay or upgrade the existing optical access network. A centralized WDM-PON in which the downstream wavelength is reused to modulate the upstream has been studied comprehensively, for same wavelength operation of both downstream and upstream, colorless operation and source-free of optical network units (ONU) can be realized in such systems. We propose a scheme of centralized WDM-PON with non-return-to-zero/continuous-wave (NRZ/CW)polarization multiplexed downstream and remodulated upstream using a CW injection-locked Fabry-Perot (FP) laser.This scheme can eliminate the crosstalk of downstream data on the upstream and get higher extinction ratio of received downstream signal. Experiment with 22.2km transmission of 10-Gb/s downstream signal and 622-Mb/s upstream signal was realized using a commercial FP laser, with power penalties of 0.2dB and 0dB respectively. 2.5-Gb/s upstream signal using an injection locked FP laser was also investigated, and 61 modes within 25.4nm span were locked with side-mode suppression ratio of above 27dB. © 2008 SPIE.

Abstract:An upstream multi-wavelength shared (UMWS) time division multiplexing passive optical network (TDM-PON) is presented by using a reflective semiconductor amplifier (RSOA) and tunable optical filter (TOF) based directly modulated fiber ring laser as upstream laser source. The stable laser operation is easily achieved no matter what the bandwidth and shape of the TOF is and it can be directly modulated when the RSOA is driven at its saturation region. In this UMWS TDM-PON system, an individual wavelength can be assigned to the user who has a high bandwidth demand by tuning the central wavelength of the TOF in its upgraded optical network unit (ONU), while others maintain their traditional ONU structure and share the bandwidth via time slots, which greatly and dynamically upgrades the upstream capacity. We experimentally demonstrated the bidirectional transmission of downstream data at 10-Gb/s and upstream data at 1.25-Gb/s per wavelength over 25-km single mode fiber (SMF) with almost no power penalty at both ends. A stable performance is observed for the upstream wavelength tuned from 1530 nm to 1595 nm. Moreover, due to the high extinction ratio (ER) of the upstream signal, the burst-mode transmitting is successfully presented and a better time-division multiplexing performance can be obtained by turning off the unused lasers thanks to the rapid formation of the laser in the fiber ring.

The OFSK transmitter generates constant-intensity wavelength shift keying signals based on phase modulation and polarization modulation. Abstract:Wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) is a promising architecture for next-generation access networks because of its large bandwidth, protocol transparency and scalability. In this paper, we propose a cost-effective, high-speed upstream WDM-PON scheme adopting polarization division multiplexed (PDM) on-off keying (OOK) modulation at the optical network unit (ONU) and digital coherent/self-coherent detection with a novel blind dual-modulus equalization algorithm at the optical line terminal (OLT). As such, the upstream capacity can be directly enhanced at low ONU expenditure, and receiver sensitivity as well as power budget can be also improved. Abstract:In this paper, we propose and experimentally investigate a simple self-injection Fabry-Perot laser scheme on each optical network unit (ONU) for 10 Gbps TDM passive optical networks (PONs). Based on the proposed four wavelength-multiplexed 2.5 Gbps lasers, the 10 Gbps uplink traffic can be achieved at a cost-effective way. The network architecture and performance have also been analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:We proposed an Upstream Multi-Wavelength Shared (UMWS) PON architecture based on a tunable self-seeding Fabry-Perot laser diode (FP-LD) at ONU. The performances of the wavelength and power stability, side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR), tuning range for the proposed tunable self-seeding laser module at ONU are experimentally investigated. The BER is measured with direct modulation on FP-LD of 1.25 Gbps upstream data. The extensive simulations not only evaluate the enhanced performance from the upstream wavelength-sharing, but also for the first time investigate the impact of channel Switch Latency (SL) on the network performance.

Abstract:Wavelength reuse in a symmetric ultra-wideband (UWB) over wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical network based on injection locking of a Fabry–Pérot laser diode (FP-LD) and polarization multiplexing is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the proposed scheme, the downstream UWB signal and baseband signal are generated and polarization multiplexed in the central station and sent to a base station (BS) over an optical fiber. At the BS, one of the downstream signals is selected to injection lock the FP-LD. It is demonstrated theoretically and experimentally that the upstream service performance is less sensitive to the modulation depth of the downstream UWB signal than the baseband signal, and the use of the downstream UWB signal as the injection signal would contribute to a better transmission performance for both the downstream and upstream services. Thus, the downstream UWB signal is selected as the injection signal. An experiment is performed. When the FP-LD is injection locked by a downstream UWB signal, a clear optical carrier is generated which is reused for upstream UWB and baseband transmission. A bidirectional point-to-point transmission of 1.25 Gb/s UWB signal and 10 Gb/s baseband signal over 25-km single-mode fiber using a single wavelength is demonstrated. The bit error rate performances and the eye diagrams for both downstream and upstream transmissions are measured.

Abstract:A novel upstream data remodulation scheme with downstream ASK-DPSK modulation format is proposed for WDMPONs in this letter. And this kind of scheme is also experimentally demonstrated on one particular wavelength channel. Both the 2.5-Gb/s downstream optical DPSK signal and the 2.5-Gb/s downstream optical ASK signal are demodulated respectively at the receiving side, while part of the downstream carrier is directly remodulated by an optical intensity modulator for upstream transmission of 2.5-Gb/s data. System performance under different amplitude ratios of downstream optical ASK signal is investigated. It is shown that effective reception and robust performance can be achieved after having been transmitted for 25-km.

Abstract:We investigate the use of differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) with a reduced modulation depth (RMD) as the downstream modulation format to enhance the tolerance to both chromatic dispersion and remodulation timing misalignment. Despite the RMD, in each optical network unit the demodulated DPSK signal from the destructive port of the delay-interferometer still maintains a high extinction ratio (ER), whereas the signal from the constructive port has a very low ER and can be readily remodulated by the upstream signal. Error-free operation at 10 Gb/s was achieved in a 20-km-reach experiment without dispersion compensation and remodulation synchronization.

Abstract:This paper proposes and numerically investigates a novel high-speed wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) architecture with colorless user terminals based on the use of orthogonal modulation scheme for downstream and upstream transmission. The 40Gb/s optical frequency shift keyed (FSK) downstream data is generated based on carrier-suppressed modulation. At optical network unit, the downstream signal is directly re-modulated by the 2.5Gb/s up-stream data and sent back with the same fiber. Error free transmission over 20km single mode fiber can be observed for both downstream and upstream signals in our simulation. Power budget, tolerance of channel spacing, FSK tone spacing and dispersion are all investigated. Factors that might influence the stability of the system are analyzed and an extended hybrid wired/wireless version of the scheme is also given.

Abstract:We propose a scheme for mitigating Rayleigh backscattering noise and demodulating differential phaseshift keying (DPSK) signals in wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical networks (WDM-PONs) with injection-locked Fabry-Perot laser diodes (FP-LDs).Signal demodulation and wavelength conversion are simultaneously realized on the basis of the frequency deviation and red shift of longitude modes in the FP-LDs.Experimental results demonstrate that the demodulation and wavelength conversion of 2.5-Gb/s DPSK signals are achieved.A power penalty of about 1.6 dB at a bit error rate of 10 -9 is measured after transmission over 25-km single mode fiber.

Abstract:This paper proposes and numerically investigated a novel high-speed wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) architecture with colorless user terminals based on the use of a different modulation scheme for downstream and upstream transmission. In the central office (CO), based on the carrier suppressing functionality of Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) and differential-phase-shift-keying to amplitude-shift-keying conversion using Mach-Zehnder delay interferometer, 40-Gb/s optical frequency shift keying (FSK) is generated and employed for transmitting the downstream data. In the remote node (RN) or optical network unit (ONU), the upstream data is re-modulated at 2.5-Gb/s by an intensity modulator and sent back to CO with the same fiber. Since only one light source is needed for each WDM channel, and the MZM to generate carrier suppressed signal can be shared by all the channels, a centralized 40-Gb/s WDM-PON access system with low-cost configuration is realized. Error free transmission over 20-km SMF can be observed for both downstream and upstream signals in our simulation. © 2008 SPIE.
