By orthogonally encoding the label and payload of the optical packet on the in-phase ( I) and quadrature ( Q) components of DQPSK, the proposed scheme could be applied in the optical label switching networks. The label erasing and rewriting of optical packets can be achieved through the proposed optical phase ldquodroprdquo and ldquoaddrdquo schemes, respectively.

Abstract:Advanced phase modulation formats, such as differential binary phase-shift keying (DPSK), differential quadrature phase-shift keying (DQPSK), and differential eight-ary phase-shift keying (D8PSK), and so on, have attracted considerable research attention as promising candidates for future optical communication systems. To accommodate different requirements such as nonlinear and dispersion tolerance, implementation complexity or spectral efficiency in different regions of networks, several different modulation formats are expected to coexist in the future optical network. For example, low-speed binary modulation formats may be deployed in the edge networks such as metro or access networks, whereas high-speed or multi-level modulation formats are preferred to be employed at the core networks to support high-speed long-haul transmission. To support the transparent cross-connection among various networks, and the traffic grooming from low-speed edge networks to high-speed core networks, optical phase transmultiplexing technology is highly desirable. In this paper, we report an all-optical phase interleaving technology to phase-multiplex 3x10-Gb/s differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) signals to a single 30-Gb/s DPSK, and an optical phase-modulated format conversion scheme to convert 2x10-Gb/s DPSK WDM to a single quadrature 20-Gb/s differential quadrature phase-shift keying (DQPSK). The proposed schemes are based on four-wave mixing effect in highly-nonlinear fiber. Different from conventional optical signal processing schemes, the proposed schemes are achieved in optical phase domain directly. Experiments were performed to verify the feasibility of the proposed schemes. Both of them could be applied in transparent optical networks to act as an optical phase transmultiplexer enabling traffic grooming and cross-connection among different networks.

Abstract:An optical format conversion scheme from 120-Gb/s return-to-zero differential 8-ary phase-shift keying (RZ-D8PSK) to 80-Gb/s RZ differential quadrature phase-shift keying (RZ-DQPSK) is demonstrated by optically removing one tributary through optical phase erasure. It is achieved through four-wave mixing in a highly nonlinear fiber. An 8-dB sensitivity improvement is obtained for the converted DQPSK signal relative to that of the input D8PSK signal. This is potentially useful to enable the interconnection among neighboring networks where different formats are deployed.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate generation of optical carrier suppressed-optical differential phase-shift keying (OCS-oDPSK) modulation format in radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems using one single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). This scheme realizes up-conversion of baseband data for down-link wireless service delivery, generation of remote local oscillator (LO) signal for down-conversion of uplink radio frequency (RF) signal, and remodulation of down-converted uplink data, thus lowering the cost of base stations (BSs) in full-duplex RoF systems. The proposed scheme is expected to be simple and compact due to the use of a single MZM. Furthermore, the OCS-oDPSK generation principle is extended to obtain an OCS-optical differential quadrature phase-shift keying (OCS-oDQPSK) signal by employing a dual-parallel MZM (DPMZM), which is useful to deliver multiple wireless services on the same RF carrier.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate an all-optical phase multiplexing scheme using four-wave mixing in a highly nonlinear fiber. Two 10-Gb/s pi/2-shifted return-to-zero (RZ) differential phase-shift-keying (DPSK) wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) signals are successfully phase-multiplexed into a 20-Gb/s RZ differential quadrature phase-shift-keying signal with a negative 1.6-dB power penalty. With more input DPSK WDM signals, the proposed scheme can be applied to obtain a multilevel phase-shift-keying signal with increased capacity and enhanced spectral efficiency.

Abstract:An optical format conversion scheme of multilevel phase-shift keying (M-ary PSK) signals using the four-wave mixing based optical phase erasure is discussed in this paper. The conversion from differential quadrature phase-shift keying (DQPSK) to differential phase shift keying at 10 and 160 Gbaud, and the conversion from differential eight-ary phase-shift keying to DQPSK at 40 Gbaud have been experimentally demonstrated. The proposed scheme could be used as a phase erasure, in which a redundant tributary of the M-ary PSK signal is removed, or as an updater where the unwanted phase pattern is replaced with the new pattern.

Abstract:We propose a scheme for mitigating Rayleigh backscattering noise and demodulating differential phaseshift keying (DPSK) signals in wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical networks (WDM-PONs) with injection-locked Fabry-Perot laser diodes (FP-LDs).Signal demodulation and wavelength conversion are simultaneously realized on the basis of the frequency deviation and red shift of longitude modes in the FP-LDs.Experimental results demonstrate that the demodulation and wavelength conversion of 2.5-Gb/s DPSK signals are achieved.A power penalty of about 1.6 dB at a bit error rate of 10 -9 is measured after transmission over 25-km single mode fiber.

Abstract:We propose an all-optical modulation formats combination scheme that merges an amplitude-shift keying (ASK) signal and a differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) signal into a single differential phase amplitude-shift keying (DPASK) signal based on parametric amplification in a highly nonlinear fiber. By optimizing the power of the ASK channel, formats combination of ASK and DPSK to DPASK signal is successfully demonstrated by computational simulation. The demodulation process of the generated DPASK pulses is investigated and the relationship between optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) penalty and the input ASK power is presented. The proposed scheme may be used for increasing spectral efficiency and all-optical logic device.

Abstract:Wavelength conversion and five-channel multicasting for 20 Gbit/s quadrature phase-shift keying signals have been experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide with digital coherent detection. The eye diagrams and constellation diagrams of the converted and multicasting idlers are successfully observed. Moreover, the bit-error rates (BERs) of the generated idlers are measured and the power penalties are all less than 0.7 dB at a BER of 3×10(-3).

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a cost-effective 80-Gbit/s DPSK transmitter using phase interleaving without optical-time/polarization-division multiplexing. Two cascaded independent 40-Gbit/s modulations are time-interleaved to generate 80-Gbit/s DPSK with high spectrum efficiency: 20-dB bandwidth of only 0.68 nm.

Abstract:Based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and optical temporal time delay (OTDL), we propose and demonstrate experimentally an all-optical 40-Gb/s RZ-DPSK to ASK-Manchester format conversion. This obtained ASK-Manchester signals have the phase changes due to the demodulation of RZ-DPSK, which is called as phase-incorporated ASK-Manchester signal. Compared with pure Manchester signal, the simulated results show that the phase-incorporated ASK-Manchester signal has a compact optical spectrum and lower power at the low radio frequency (RF) frequencies, which presents high tolerance on chromatic dispersion and little the cross-talk between payload and label. Moreover, the efficiency and the BER performance of conversion and the dynamic range of fiber input power, transmission length, and chromatic dispersion tolerance of the converted ASK-Manchester are detailed discussed. Less than 1-dB power penalty over 50-km SMF transmission is observed.

Abstract:The dual-hop free-space optical (FSO) communication link for polarization-division multiplexing quadrature phase-shift keying (PDM-QPSK) signals is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in an atmospheric chamber with the optical phase conjugation (OPC) compensating the turbulence-induced signal distortions. The phase fluctuations can be effectively reduced by the OPC, as the error vector magnitudes are 10.03% and 8.28% decreased for x- and y-polarization. At the bit error rate of 1 x 10(-3), the power penalty of the dual-hop link with OPC is 2.85 or 2.34 dB lower than that of each polarization without OPC.

Abstract:Through four-wave mixing (FWM) process in highly-nonlinear fiber (HNLF) or semiconductor device, the phase-modulation depth of one converted FWM component could be doubled compared with that of the original input signal. Therefore, with a multilevel phase-modulated signal and a CW light as inputs, after FWM process in a nonlinear media, phase pattern (0, pi) carried in the input multilevel phase-modulated signal will not be transferred to one converted FWM component, which could be referred to as an optical phase erasure process. We experimentally demonstrated format conversion from 320-Gb/s return-to-zero differential quadrature phase-shift keying (RZ-DQPSK) to 160-Gb/s return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (RZ-DPSK) through the proposed all-optical phase erasure scheme. The phase information carried in the converted binary RZ-DPSK is logically equal to the input Q-component, or a logical XOR operation result between I and Q components of the input RZ-DQPSK, which correspond to a serial or parallel DQPSK transmitter for the input RZ-DQPSK signal. It can be applied to erase a binary tributary from a multilevel modulation format.

Abstract:We propose a novel scheme to suppress Rayleigh noise in carrier-distributed wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical networks, by using differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) as the upstream modulation format. Due to the narrow spectrum of the distributed carrier, the Rayleigh noise towards the optical line terminal (OLT) also has narrow spectrum and can be effectively suppressed by the notch filter-like destructive port of the delay-interferometer at the OLT, which is used to demodulate the upstream DPSK signal simultaneously. Experimental demonstration of the 10-Gb/s upstream signal is achieved with less than 0.2-dB power penalty induced by Rayleigh noise after the transmission of 20-km single-mode fiber.

Abstract:We investigate the use of differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) with a reduced modulation depth (RMD) as the downstream modulation format to enhance the tolerance to both chromatic dispersion and remodulation timing misalignment. Despite the RMD, in each optical network unit the demodulated DPSK signal from the destructive port of the delay-interferometer still maintains a high extinction ratio (ER), whereas the signal from the constructive port has a very low ER and can be readily remodulated by the upstream signal. Error-free operation at 10 Gb/s was achieved in a 20-km-reach experiment without dispersion compensation and remodulation synchronization.

Abstract:Quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) is usually generated using an in-phase/quadrature (IQ) modulator in a balanced driving-condition, showing a square-shape constellation in complex plane. This conventional QPSK is referred to as square QPSK (S-QPSK) in this paper. On the other hand, when an IQ modulator is driven in an un-balanced manner with different amplitudes in in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) branches, a rectangular QPSK (R-QPSK) could be synthesized. The concept of R-QPSK is proposed for the first time and applied to optical eight-ary phase-shift keying (8PSK) transmitter. By cascading an S-QPSK and an R-QPSK, an optical 8PSK could be synthesized. The transmitter configuration is based on two cascaded IQ modulators, which also could be used to generate other advanced multi-level formats like quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) when different driving and bias conditions are applied. Therefore, the proposed transmitter structure has potential to be deployed as a versatile transmitter for synthesis of several different multi-level modulation formats for the future dynamic optical networks. A 30-Gb/s optical 8PSK is experimentally demonstrated using the proposed solution.
