Abstract:All-optical wavelength interchange for differential phase-shift-keying signal is proposed and demonstrated using an optical parametric loop mirror with a phase-controlled optical pump. The performance of wavelength interchange is experimentally evaluated at 10 Gb/s. Successful swapping of phase information is achieved with error-free performance for 231-1 pseudorandom binary sequence encoded signals.

Abstract:A novel scheme is proposed to achieve self-pumping wavelength conversion for two differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) signals at different wavelengths through four-wave mixing (FWM) effect in a highly nonlinear optical fiber. By changing the phase modulation depths to pi/2 for both of the DPSK signals, the two signals can be multiplexed to generate a differential quadrature phase-shift keying signal. The simulations and experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of phase manipulations for phase-shift keying signals through the FWM process.

Abstract:We propose a scheme for mitigating Rayleigh backscattering noise and demodulating differential phaseshift keying (DPSK) signals in wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical networks (WDM-PONs) with injection-locked Fabry-Perot laser diodes (FP-LDs).Signal demodulation and wavelength conversion are simultaneously realized on the basis of the frequency deviation and red shift of longitude modes in the FP-LDs.Experimental results demonstrate that the demodulation and wavelength conversion of 2.5-Gb/s DPSK signals are achieved.A power penalty of about 1.6 dB at a bit error rate of 10 -9 is measured after transmission over 25-km single mode fiber.

Abstract:Wavelength conversion and five-channel multicasting for 20 Gbit/s quadrature phase-shift keying signals have been experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide with digital coherent detection. The eye diagrams and constellation diagrams of the converted and multicasting idlers are successfully observed. Moreover, the bit-error rates (BERs) of the generated idlers are measured and the power penalties are all less than 0.7 dB at a BER of 3×10(-3).

Abstract:All-optical wavelength multicasting is presented and experimentally demonstrated for 40 Gbit/s polarization-division-multiplexed (PDM) nonreturn-to-zero quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signals using four-wave mixing (FWM) with angled-polarization pumps in a silicon waveguide. Five multicast channels are obtained on the generated idlers. The eye diagrams, constellation diagrams, and bit error rates (BERs) of the QPSK sequences on the two polarization states are measured for each wavelength channel. Abstract:The dual-hop free-space optical (FSO) communication link for polarization-division multiplexing quadrature phase-shift keying (PDM-QPSK) signals is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in an atmospheric chamber with the optical phase conjugation (OPC) compensating the turbulence-induced signal distortions. The phase fluctuations can be effectively reduced by the OPC, as the error vector magnitudes are 10.03% and 8.28% decreased for x- and y-polarization. At the bit error rate of 1 x 10(-3), the power penalty of the dual-hop link with OPC is 2.85 or 2.34 dB lower than that of each polarization without OPC.

Abstract:We numerically investigate the main constrains for high efficiency wavelength conversion of differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) signals based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF). Using multi-tone pump phase modulation techniques, high efficiency wavelength conversion of DPSK signals is achieved with the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effects effectively suppressed. Our analysis shows that there is a compromise between conversion efficiency and converted idler degradation. By optimizing the pump phase modulation configuration, the converted DPSK idler's degradation can be dramatically decreased through balancing SBS suppression and pump phase modulation degradation. Our simulation results also show that these multi-tone pump phase modulation techniques are more appropriate for the future high bit rate systems.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a cost-effective 80-Gbit/s DPSK transmitter using phase interleaving without optical-time/polarization-division multiplexing. Two cascaded independent 40-Gbit/s modulations are time-interleaved to generate 80-Gbit/s DPSK with high spectrum efficiency: 20-dB bandwidth of only 0.68 nm.

Abstract:In this letter, we report a novel amplitude shift keying/differential phase-shift keying (ASK/DPSK) optical packet encoding method that can significantly reduce the crosstalk between the ASK payload and the DPSK label through spectrum shaping. We demonstrate wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) transmission for 4 x 40 Gb/s labeled return-to-zero signals, including label swapping by Kerr switching of one of the channels, with an overall penalty of 3.3 dB for the payload and 0.3 dB for the label, clearly validating this orthogonal modulation scheme as a potential solution for future ultrahigh-speed Internet protocol-over-WDM networks..

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate an all-optical phase multiplexing scheme using four-wave mixing in a highly nonlinear fiber. Two 10-Gb/s pi/2-shifted return-to-zero (RZ) differential phase-shift-keying (DPSK) wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) signals are successfully phase-multiplexed into a 20-Gb/s RZ differential quadrature phase-shift-keying signal with a negative 1.6-dB power penalty. With more input DPSK WDM signals, the proposed scheme can be applied to obtain a multilevel phase-shift-keying signal with increased capacity and enhanced spectral efficiency.

Abstract:An important challenge for implementing optical signal processing functions such as wavelength conversion or wavelength data exchange (WDE) is to avoid the introduction of linear and nonlinear phase noise in the subsystem. This is particularly important for phase noise sensitive, high-order quadrature-amplitude modulation (QAM) signals. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an optical data exchange scheme through cascaded 2nd-order nonlinearities in periodically-poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguides using coherent pumping. The proposed coherent pumping scheme enables noise from the coherent pumps to be cancelled out in the swapped data after WDE, even with broad linewidth distributed feedback (DFB) pump lasers. Hence, this scheme allows phase noise tolerant processing functions, enabling the low-cost implementation of WDE for high-order QAM signals. We experimentally demonstrate WDEs between 10-Gbaud 4QAM (4QAM) signal and 12.5-Gbaud 4QAM (16QAM) signal with 3.5-MHz linewidth DFB pump lasers and 50-GHz channel spacing. Error-free operation is observed for the swapped QAM signals with coherent DFB pumping whilst use of free-running DFB pumps leads to visible error floors and unrecoverable phase errors. The phase noise cancellation in the coherent pump scheme is further confirmed by study of the recovered carrier phase of the converted signals. In addition to pump phase noise, the influence of crosstalk caused by the finite extinction ratio in WDE is also experimentally investigated for the swapped QAM signals.

Abstract:Multichannel wavelength conversion is experimentally demonstrated for high-speed 128 Gb/s dual-polarization quadrature phase-shift keying signals using four-wave mixing in a polarization diversity circuit with silicon nanowires as nonlinear elements. The wavelength conversion performance is investigated for both single-and three-channel input signals, showing quality factors well >9.8 dB (corresponding to bit-error-ratios better than 10(-3)) and with a negligible power penalty compared with the back-to-back case.

Abstract:We propose an all-optical modulation formats combination scheme that merges an amplitude-shift keying (ASK) signal and a differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) signal into a single differential phase amplitude-shift keying (DPASK) signal based on parametric amplification in a highly nonlinear fiber. By optimizing the power of the ASK channel, formats combination of ASK and DPSK to DPASK signal is successfully demonstrated by computational simulation. The demodulation process of the generated DPASK pulses is investigated and the relationship between optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) penalty and the input ASK power is presented. The proposed scheme may be used for increasing spectral efficiency and all-optical logic device.

Abstract:The three-channel transmission of 42.8 Gbit/s nonreturn-to-zero differential phase-shift keying(NRZ-DPSK)signal is demonstrated.The 410 km transmission link consists of four spans using standard single-mode fiber(SSMF).The dispersion compensation fiber(DCF)and erbium-doped fiber amplifier/distributed raman amplifier(EDAF/DRA)hybrid amplification are used.Both optical power spectrum and eye diagrams of the DPSK signal are given in back-to-back configuration and after transmission(center channel).The curves of bit error rate(BER)of the center channel also is given,both in back-to-back configuration and after transmission,which is compared with the curve in single-channel transmission configuration.The BER of the DPSK signal of the center channel is 1.0E-3 after transmission using single-ended detection.
