Abstract:We propose an all-optical modulation formats combination scheme that merges an amplitude-shift keying (ASK) signal and a differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) signal into a single differential phase amplitude-shift keying (DPASK) signal based on parametric amplification in a highly nonlinear fiber. By optimizing the power of the ASK channel, formats combination of ASK and DPSK to DPASK signal is successfully demonstrated by computational simulation. The demodulation process of the generated DPASK pulses is investigated and the relationship between optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) penalty and the input ASK power is presented. The proposed scheme may be used for increasing spectral efficiency and all-optical logic device.

Abstract:All-optical wavelength multicasting is presented and experimentally demonstrated for 40 Gbit/s polarization-division-multiplexed (PDM) nonreturn-to-zero quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signals using four-wave mixing (FWM) with angled-polarization pumps in a silicon waveguide. Five multicast channels are obtained on the generated idlers. The eye diagrams, constellation diagrams, and bit error rates (BERs) of the QPSK sequences on the two polarization states are measured for each wavelength channel. Abstract:The dual-hop free-space optical (FSO) communication link for polarization-division multiplexing quadrature phase-shift keying (PDM-QPSK) signals is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in an atmospheric chamber with the optical phase conjugation (OPC) compensating the turbulence-induced signal distortions. The phase fluctuations can be effectively reduced by the OPC, as the error vector magnitudes are 10.03% and 8.28% decreased for x- and y-polarization. At the bit error rate of 1 x 10(-3), the power penalty of the dual-hop link with OPC is 2.85 or 2.34 dB lower than that of each polarization without OPC.

Abstract:Wavelength conversion and five-channel multicasting for 20 Gbit/s quadrature phase-shift keying signals have been experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide with digital coherent detection. The eye diagrams and constellation diagrams of the converted and multicasting idlers are successfully observed. Moreover, the bit-error rates (BERs) of the generated idlers are measured and the power penalties are all less than 0.7 dB at a BER of 3×10(-3).
Hybrid transmission of PS-GS4QAM and QPSK data in the form of a PS-16QAM mm-wave signal enabled by optical asymmetrical dual-SSB modulation

Abstract:The independent optical dual-single-sideband (dual-SSB) signal generation and detection can be achieved by an optical in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) modulator and one single photodiode (PD). The dual-SSB signal is able to carry two different information. After PD detection, the optical dual-SSB signal can be converted into an electrical millimeter-wave (mm-wave) signal. Therefore, the optical dual-SSB signal generation and detection technique can be employed in the radio-over-fiber (RoF) system to achieve higher system spectral efficiency and reduce system architecture complexity. However, the I/Q modulator's nonideal property results in the amplitude imbalance of the optical dual-SSB signal, and then the crosstalk can occur. Moreover, after PD detection, the generated mm-wave signal based on the optical dual-SSB modulation has a relatively low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), which restricts the system performance. In this paper, we propose an optical asymmetrical dual-SSB signal generation and detection scheme based on the probabilistic shaping (PS) technology, to decrease the influence of the optical dual-SSB signal's amplitude imbalance and to enhance the system performance in the scenario of the limited SNR. The dual-SSB in our scheme is composed of the left sideband (LSB) in probabilistic-shaping geometric-shaping 4-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (PS-GS4QAM) format and the right sideband (RSB) in quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) format. The transmitter digital signal processing (DSP) generates a dual-SSB signal to drive the optical I/Q modulator. The I/Q modulator implements an electrical-to-optical conversion and generates an optical dual-SSB signal. After PD detection, the optical dual-SSB signal is converted into a PS-16QAM mm-wave signal. In our simulation, compared with the normal 16QAM scenario, the PS-16QAM scenario exhibits a ∼1.2 dB receiver sensitivity improvement at the hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8×10-3. Therefore, in our experiment, based on the PS technology, we design a dual-SSB signal including a 5 Gbaud LSB-PS-GS4QAM at -15 GHz and a 5 Gbaud RSB-QPSK at 20 GHz. After 5 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) transmission and PD detection, the dual-SSB signal is converted into a 5 Gbaud PS-16QAM mm-wave signal at 35 GHz. Then, the generated PS-16QAM signal is sent into a 1.2 m single-input-single-output (SISO) wireless link. In the DSP at the receiver end, the dual-SSB signal can be recovered from the mm-wave signal, and the PS-GS4QAM and QPSK data carried by the dual-SSB signal can be separated. The bit error rates (BERs) of the LSB-PS-GS4QAM and the RSB-QPSK in our experiment can be below the HD-FEC threshold of 3.8×10-3. The results demonstrate that our scheme can tolerate the I/Q modulator's nonideal property and performs well in the scenario of a relatively low SNR.

Abstract:Advanced multi-level modulation formats have shown their great potential in high-speed and high-spectral-efficiency optical communications. Using quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) modulation format for free-space optical (FSO) communication, a bidirectional high-speed FSO transmission link with the bit rates of up to 40 Gbit/s over ∼1 km, between two buildings in the campus of Changchun University of Science and Technology, Changchun, China, is experimentally demonstrated cooperating by capture and tracking systems. The eye-diagrams and constellation diagrams of the transmitted QPSK signals are clearly observed. By comparing the bit error rate (BER) curves before and after transmission, one can find that the receiving powers are both less than −16.5 dBm for the forward and backward transmissions of the bidirectional 20, 30, and 40 Gbit/s FSO links, and their power penalties due to the phase fluctuation of the atmospheric channel are both less than 2.6 dB, at the BER of 3.8×10−3.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate an all-optical format conversion from two independent non-return-to-zero on–off keying (NRZ-OOK) signals to a return-to-zero quadrature phase shift keying (RZ-QPSK) signal using two cascaded SOAs. Within each SOA, the cross phase modulation (XPM) process is properly controlled by an assistant light. After evaluating its effect on XPM, a suitable power range of assistant light is chosen for the NRZ-OOK to RZ-QPSK format conversion. In the experiment, a RZ-QPSK signal is successfully obtained with opened demodulation eye-diagrams.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate an all-optical phase multiplexing scheme using four-wave mixing in a highly nonlinear fiber. Two 10-Gb/s pi/2-shifted return-to-zero (RZ) differential phase-shift-keying (DPSK) wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) signals are successfully phase-multiplexed into a 20-Gb/s RZ differential quadrature phase-shift-keying signal with a negative 1.6-dB power penalty. With more input DPSK WDM signals, the proposed scheme can be applied to obtain a multilevel phase-shift-keying signal with increased capacity and enhanced spectral efficiency.

Abstract:Based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and optical temporal time delay (OTDL), we propose and demonstrate experimentally an all-optical 40-Gb/s RZ-DPSK to ASK-Manchester format conversion. This obtained ASK-Manchester signals have the phase changes due to the demodulation of RZ-DPSK, which is called as phase-incorporated ASK-Manchester signal. Compared with pure Manchester signal, the simulated results show that the phase-incorporated ASK-Manchester signal has a compact optical spectrum and lower power at the low radio frequency (RF) frequencies, which presents high tolerance on chromatic dispersion and little the cross-talk between payload and label. Moreover, the efficiency and the BER performance of conversion and the dynamic range of fiber input power, transmission length, and chromatic dispersion tolerance of the converted ASK-Manchester are detailed discussed. Less than 1-dB power penalty over 50-km SMF transmission is observed.

Abstract:An all-optical format conversion (AOFC) scheme of star-m-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (star-mQAM) based on a nonlinear Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with nested-pump assisted nonlinear optical loop mirror (nested-PA-NOLM) is proposed and numerically simulated. In this scheme, input multi-Gbps star-8QAM signals can be converted into three quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signals (namely QPSK-A, -B and -C) through the PA-NOLM under different input power of the signal and the pump. The nonlinear MZI is formed by two PA-NOLMs of the upper and the lower arms, the former and the latter 3-dB optical couplers (OCs), a directional variable optical attenuator (VOA) in the upper arm and a directional variable phase shifter (VPS) in the lower arm. A VOA and a VPS are used to adjust the power ratio (PR) and relative phase shift (RPS) between any two of QPSK-A, -B and -C. When any two adjusted signals in QPSK-A, -B and -C are coherently superposed, the aggregated star-8QAM signal can be extracted again. Furthermore, the proposed scheme can also be used to convert the 20 Gbps bipolar 4-ary pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) signal into two 10 Gbps BPSK signals and a 20 Gbps QPSK signal. When the proposed scheme is combined with the phase-sensitive amplification (PSA), it can also be used to convert one 16QAM into two QPSK signals. The scheme performance is analyzed via constellation diagrams, power waveforms, the error vector magnitude (EVM) and the bit error rate (BER) of the optical signals. The scheme can not only be deployed in optical gateways to connect optical networks using different modulation formats, but also has a potential applied advantage in security information transmission between different optical networks.

Abstract:All-optical two-channel format conversion is proposed and experimentally demonstrated from a 40 Gbit/s polarization multiplexing (Pol-MUX) non-return-to-zero quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signal to Pol-MUX binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) signals by using phase-doubled four-wave mixing effects with two polarization-angled pumps in a silicon waveguide. Abstract:An all-optical format conversion (AOFC) scheme for the input 30 Gbit/s rectangular 8-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (8QAM) signal is proposed and numerically investigated based on phase-sensitive amplification (PSA) and nonlinear Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). Firstly, the input rectangular 8QAM signal is orthogonal decomposed into the inphase and quadrature components based on PSA, respectively. The in-phase component is the 4-ary amplitude and phase shift keying (4APSK) signal and the quadrature component is the binary phase shift keying (BPSK) signal. Secondly, the converted 4APSK signal is transmitted into one piece of highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) to obtain the phase-distorted two-amplitude and two-phase (2A-2P) signal based on the self-phase modulation (SPM) effect. After adjusting the power of the 2A-2P signal, it is injected into one nonlinear MZI to eliminate the amplitude difference of the inner and the outer rings of the 2A-2P signal. The 2A-2P signal can be converted into the regular quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signal by the nonlinear MZI with phase preservation. Thirdly, the converted BPSK and QPSK signals are coherently superposed in one 3-dB optical coupler (OC) to get the aggregated rectangular 8QAM signal and other types of 8QAM signals. The proposed scheme can also be extended to realize the AOFC from the 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) signal to two QPSK signals. The constellation diagrams, amplitude and phase histograms, error vector magnitude (EVM) and bit error rate (BER) of the relevant optical signals are measured to evaluate the system performance. The proposed scheme can be equipped with the optical gateway to enable all-optical interconnection of optical networks with different modulation formats.

Abstract:Adaptive free-space optical (FSO) communication links have been extensively studied in order to adapt to variable atmospheric channel environments due to factors such as atmospheric turbulence. As a supporting technology, an all-in-one BPSK/QPSK switchable transmission and reception method is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for adaptive modulation format switching in FSO links. The transmission and reception of both modulation formats are realized based on the same IQ modulator and single-photodetector coherent receiver. Simulation and experimental results show that the QPSK signal has a power penalty of about 3–4 dB compared to the BPSK signal with a BER of about 1 × 10−3. The basis for format switching is given according to the various atmospheric channel conditions. The proposed method provides a flexible and efficient solution for variable FSO communication environments to improve their performance.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate one-to-five quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) wavelength multicasting based on four-wave mixing in bulk semiconductor optical amplifier.The input 25 Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero QPSK signal is successfully multicast to five new wavelengths with all information preserved.All the multicast channels are with a power penalty less than 1.1 dB at a bit error rate (BER) of 10 -3 .A characterization of the conversion efficiency in terms of pump and signal powers using the BER as figure of merit is also presented, the results indicate that the pump and signal powers should be optimized to eliminate the introduced deleterious nonlinear components.

Abstract:An all-optical format conversion (AOFC) scheme from 4-ary pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) to quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) based on the non-degenerate phase-sensitive amplification (PSA) and the pump assisted nonlinear optical loop mirror (PA-NOLM) is proposed and numerically simulated for the first time. The input unipolar PAM4 signal with equal amplitude distance (UPAM4-A) is coupled with two input pump lights and injected into the symmetric interferometric fiber optic parameter amplifier (FOPA) to achieve the separation of the UPAM4-A and the new pump light generated at the signal frequency based on the non-degenerate PSA. When the filtered out UPAM4-A is coherent added with the new generated pump, the UPAM4-A signal to the biplolar PAM4 (BPAM4) signal. When the converted BPAM4 is sent into the PA-NOLM after adjusting its power, the BPAM4 signal could be converted into the QPSK signal. The error vector magnitude (EVM) and bit error ratio (BER) performance of the system are measured before and after AOFC with different input and receiver optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR). For the input UPAM4-A signal with an input OSNR of 27 dB, there is about 8.2 dB BER performance improvement in receiver OSNR for the final converted QPSK signal. Additionally, the proposed non-degenerate PSA configuration can be extended to realize the AOFC from one QPSK to two on–off keying (OOK) signals. The scheme can be applied in the optical gateway connecting the long-haul and the short-reach optical networks with suitable modulation formats.

Abstract:All-optical wavelength conversion of differential phase-shift keyed (DPSK) signals based on SOA in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (SOA-MZI) configuration is simulated and analyzed using the transfer function of MZI and a wideband dynamic model of SOA. The operation principle is analyzed and operation point selection, influence of SOA physical parameters, different signal format and operation speed are discussed in detail. The results of 10Gb/s operation show that SOA-MZI is compatible with both non-return-to-zero (NRZ) and return-to-zero (RZ) formatted signals. However, the conversion performance is sensitive to the operation point of the involved SOAs. To maximize the Q value of the demodulated conversion signal, the power and wavelength of the original DPSK signal and the probe light should be optimized to obtain approximately π phase difference between the upper and lower arms of MZI in the middle of each bit. Besides, SOA with short carrier lifetime and large linewidth enhancement factor is preferred for wavelength conversion applications. 40Gb/s operation is also simulated with SOA carrier lifetime of 100ps, and the results strongly suggests 40Gb/s operation with RZ formatted signals and relatively large input powers of the clock signal.

Abstract:We have performed both experimental and numerical analyses of interleaved bidirectional transmission of 16 times 10-Gb/s dense-wavelength-division-multiplexed (DWDM) signals using differential-phase-shift-keying (DPSK) modulation format and in-line semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs). The constant intensity of DPSK-modulated DWDM signals enabled us to mitigate the crosstalk effects in the bidirectional SOA. We have demonstrated error-free bidirectional transmission of 16 channels over an 80-km single-mode fiber (SMF) with matching dispersion-compensating fiber and in-line amplification provided by an SOA. SOAs can be used for bidirectional transmission if the facet reflections can be controlled. In order to understand further the effect of the SOA facet reflectivity on transmission results, we developed a simulation model for our system. Based on the good agreement between our simulation and experimental results, we have found out that the system reflections can be minimized by careful optimization of the bias current and reflectivity of the SOA
