Abstract:An optical format conversion scheme from 120-Gb/s return-to-zero differential 8-ary phase-shift keying (RZ-D8PSK) to 80-Gb/s RZ differential quadrature phase-shift keying (RZ-DQPSK) is demonstrated by optically removing one tributary through optical phase erasure. It is achieved through four-wave mixing in a highly nonlinear fiber. An 8-dB sensitivity improvement is obtained for the converted DQPSK signal relative to that of the input D8PSK signal. This is potentially useful to enable the interconnection among neighboring networks where different formats are deployed.

Abstract:Through four-wave mixing (FWM) process in highly-nonlinear fiber (HNLF) or semiconductor device, the phase-modulation depth of one converted FWM component could be doubled compared with that of the original input signal. Therefore, with a multilevel phase-modulated signal and a CW light as inputs, after FWM process in a nonlinear media, phase pattern (0, pi) carried in the input multilevel phase-modulated signal will not be transferred to one converted FWM component, which could be referred to as an optical phase erasure process. We experimentally demonstrated format conversion from 320-Gb/s return-to-zero differential quadrature phase-shift keying (RZ-DQPSK) to 160-Gb/s return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (RZ-DPSK) through the proposed all-optical phase erasure scheme. The phase information carried in the converted binary RZ-DPSK is logically equal to the input Q-component, or a logical XOR operation result between I and Q components of the input RZ-DQPSK, which correspond to a serial or parallel DQPSK transmitter for the input RZ-DQPSK signal. It can be applied to erase a binary tributary from a multilevel modulation format.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate an all-optical phase multiplexing scheme using four-wave mixing in a highly nonlinear fiber. Two 10-Gb/s pi/2-shifted return-to-zero (RZ) differential phase-shift-keying (DPSK) wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) signals are successfully phase-multiplexed into a 20-Gb/s RZ differential quadrature phase-shift-keying signal with a negative 1.6-dB power penalty. With more input DPSK WDM signals, the proposed scheme can be applied to obtain a multilevel phase-shift-keying signal with increased capacity and enhanced spectral efficiency.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate an optical phase ldquoadd-droprdquo scheme to enable the format conversion between a 20-Gb/s differential quadrature phase-shift keying (DQPSK) and 10-Gb/s differential phase-shift keying. Abstract:All-optical NRZ-to-RZ format conversion with a function of wavelength multicasting is proposed in this paper, which is realized by exploiting cross-phase modulation (XPM) and four-wave-mixing (FWM) in a dispersion-flattened highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber (DF-HNL-PCF). The designed format converter is experimentally demonstrated, for which the 1-to-4 wavelength multicasting is achieved simultaneously by filtering out two FWM idler waves and both blue-chirped and red-chirped components of the broadened NRZ spectrum induced by XPM. Moreover, the wavelength tunability and dynamic characteristics of the proposed NRZ-to-RZ format converter are also exploited using the different central wavelengths of an optical clock signal and varying the input optical power at a DF-HNL-PCF in our experiment. It is shown that the designed format converter can possess a wide range of operational wavelength over 17 nm, an optimal extinction ratio of 11.6 dB, and a Q-factor of 7.1, respectively. Since the proposed scheme uses an optical fiber-based configuration and is easy for implementation, it can be very useful for future applications in advanced fiber-optic communication networks.

Abstract:We propose a novel and simple scheme to achieve NRZ-to-RZ format conversion and simultaneous wavelength multicasting based on a single-stage dual-arm electro-optic Mach–Zehnder modulator (MZM) and a short single mode fiber (SMF). The format conversion and wavelength multicast process are achieved by chirp compensation under the condition of generation of optical flat frequency comb. 40Gb/s NRZ-to-RZ conversion with one-to-five multiple-wavelength channel multicasting and transmission of the NRZ and the converted signals over 200km dispersion-managed fiber-link are successfully demonstrated by numerical simulation. Research results show that 40Gb/s 2ps RZ signal with wavelength-preserving can be obtained after format conversion. The converted RZ signal presents good transmission performance and can easily be multiplexed to 160Gb/s using optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) technology. All the multicast channels can be error free after 50km transmission. Besides, the conversion operation can also greatly reduce the timing jitter of the degraded NRZ signal due to the retiming function of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:An optical format conversion scheme of multilevel phase-shift keying (M-ary PSK) signals using the four-wave mixing based optical phase erasure is discussed in this paper. The conversion from differential quadrature phase-shift keying (DQPSK) to differential phase shift keying at 10 and 160 Gbaud, and the conversion from differential eight-ary phase-shift keying to DQPSK at 40 Gbaud have been experimentally demonstrated. The proposed scheme could be used as a phase erasure, in which a redundant tributary of the M-ary PSK signal is removed, or as an updater where the unwanted phase pattern is replaced with the new pattern.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate generation of optical carrier suppressed-optical differential phase-shift keying (OCS-oDPSK) modulation format in radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems using one single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). This scheme realizes up-conversion of baseband data for down-link wireless service delivery, generation of remote local oscillator (LO) signal for down-conversion of uplink radio frequency (RF) signal, and remodulation of down-converted uplink data, thus lowering the cost of base stations (BSs) in full-duplex RoF systems. The proposed scheme is expected to be simple and compact due to the use of a single MZM. Furthermore, the OCS-oDPSK generation principle is extended to obtain an OCS-optical differential quadrature phase-shift keying (OCS-oDQPSK) signal by employing a dual-parallel MZM (DPMZM), which is useful to deliver multiple wireless services on the same RF carrier.

Abstract:Two novel optical phase modulation formats, the staggered differential phase-shift keying (SDPSK) with return-to-zero (RZ) and carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (CSRZ) shape, are proposed and compared by numerical simulation for 100 Gbit/s medium-range transmission applications. The demodulation of two phase formats can be achieved on 1 bit rate through only one Mach-Zehnder delay interferometer and a balanced receiver. Abstract:We propose a simple and novel format conversion scheme based on a polarization modulator (PolM) and a zero-chirp intensity modulator (IM) to perform NRZ to RZ conversion for quaternary amplitude-shift keying (4-ASK) signals. Simulation shows that the scheme is capable of realizing format conversion from 20-Gbit/s NRZ-4-ASK signal to RZ-4-ASK signal with tunable pulse-width for 4-level intensity modulation format. The converted signals can transmit over a dispersion-managed fiber link from 200 km to 300 km confirming the high quality conversion. © 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the generation, the detection and the performance evaluation of a novel return-to-zero frequency shift keying (RZ-FSK) format for 40 Gb/s transmission. Non-return-to-zero (NRZ) FSK signal is generated by using two continues-wave (CW) lasers, one Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) and one Mach-Zehnder delay interferometer (MZDI). A RZ-FSK signal is successfully generated by cascading a dual-arm MZM, which is driven by a sinusoidal voltage at half of the bit rate. The demodulation can be simply achieved on 1 bit rate through one MZDI or an array waveguide grating (AWG) demultiplexer with balanced detection. By numerical simulation, two types of frequency modulation schemes using MZM or PM, and impact of the frequency tone spacing (FTS) of the generated FSK signal are discussed. The proposed scheme shows that the novel frequency modulation format offers a few transmission advantages comparing with than that of the other traditional modulation formats, such as RZ and differential phase-shift keying (DPSK), under varying dispersion management. The performance analysis of RZ-FSK signal in a 4 × 40 Gb/s WDM transmission system is introduced. We experimentally demonstrate, transparent wavelength conversion based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and in a highly nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber (HNDSF) for a 40 Gb/s RZ-FSK signal, clearly validating the feasibility of all optical signal processing of high-speed RZ-FSK signal. Moreover, we investigate the receiver power penalty for the RZ-FSK signal after a 100 km standard single-mode fiber (SMF) transmission link with matching dispersion compensating fiber (DCF), under the post-compensation management scheme. Since the frequency modulation format is orthogonal to intensity modulation and vector modulation (polarization shift keying), it can be employed in the context of the combined modulation format to decrease the data rate or enhance the symbol rate. It can - - also be utilized in the orthogonal label-switching as the modulation format for the payload or the label.

Abstract:Based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and optical temporal time delay (OTDL), we propose and demonstrate experimentally an all-optical 40-Gb/s RZ-DPSK to ASK-Manchester format conversion. This obtained ASK-Manchester signals have the phase changes due to the demodulation of RZ-DPSK, which is called as phase-incorporated ASK-Manchester signal. Compared with pure Manchester signal, the simulated results show that the phase-incorporated ASK-Manchester signal has a compact optical spectrum and lower power at the low radio frequency (RF) frequencies, which presents high tolerance on chromatic dispersion and little the cross-talk between payload and label. Moreover, the efficiency and the BER performance of conversion and the dynamic range of fiber input power, transmission length, and chromatic dispersion tolerance of the converted ASK-Manchester are detailed discussed. Less than 1-dB power penalty over 50-km SMF transmission is observed.

Abstract:A novel staggered differential phase-shift keying (SDPSK) modulation format used for 100 Gbit/s transmission system was proposed. The 2 bit/symbol optical signal could be simply demodulated by using a 1 bit delayed Mach-Zehnder interferometer and a balanced receiver. Compared with the transmission characteristics of the four types of staggered phase modulation formats, such as NRZ-DPSK, RZ-DPSK, NRZ-DQPSK, and RZ-DQPSK formats, it was found that the chromatic and polarization-mode dispersion tolerances of both the SDPSK and DPSK formats with the NRZ and RZ (with 50% duty cycle) shape formats were almost identical, the SDPSK signal could allow larger nonlinear tolerance than the DPSK or DQPSK signal, additionally, the best transmission performance for the RZ-SDPSK signal could be attained if it transmitted through 90 km standard single-mode fiber and 16 km dispersion-compensating fiber, and launched into a third-order Gaussian optical band-pass filter with beyond 125 GHz bandwidth.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an optical amplitude and phase multiplexing scheme to generate a multilevel modulation format signal, return-to-zero eight-amplitude and phase-shifted keying (RZ-8-APSK). The proposed optical amplitude and phase multiplexing is mainly based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear fiber. Cross-absorption modulation in an electroabsorption modulator is employed to intentionally adjust the extinction ratio of the generated RZ-8-APSK signal. Amplitude and phase information carried in the inputs is multiplexed and transparently transferred to the generated FWM components. In the experiment, 30-Gb/s RZ-8-APSK signals are generated from input 10-Gb/s on-off keying and 20-Gb/s RZ differential quadrature phase-shifted keying in an all-optical manner.

Abstract:We propose and investigate a novel technique to realize non-return-to-zero (NRZ) to return-to-zero (RZ) format conversion of a multichannel 4-ary amplitude shift keying (4-ASK) signal.The proposed format converter composed of two modulators and a dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) is theoretically investigated using numerical simulation as basis.Research shows that a 4-channel 20-Gb/s NRZ-4-ASK signal can be converted to a RZ-4-ASK signal simultaneously without wavelength shifting and signal quality degradation, with the converted signal multiplexed to 40 Gb/s.
