Abstract:We propose and experimentally investigate a scheme for transmitting a phase-modulated (PM) radio-over-fiber (RoF) signal along an existing fiber infrastructure without degradation of the existing baseband signal. Optical phase encoding of both signals, namely a baseband 21.4-Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero differential quaternary phase-shift keyed signal and a 5.25-GHz RoF carrying 1.25 Gb/s, enables the use of identical optical receiver structures. The experimental results show that both receivers achieve error-free operation after 80-km standard single-mode fiber transmission. The proposed scheme has potential applications for converged wireless and wireline optical access networks.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate all optical format conversion from non-return-to-zero (NRZ) format to frequency-shift-keying (FSK) format based on free carrier dispersion effect in a silicon mode-split microring resonator. The injection of the high-power NRZ signal generates free carriers leading to the blue shift of the spectrum when a '1' comes. Therefore, there is a selective filtering for the two probes with certain separation located at different position of the split mode according to the information carried by the NRZ signal. Then the NRZ signal is converted to the FSK format. The microring resonator features ultra-compact size with a radius of 10 μm thus is suitable for integration with silicon-on-insulator (SOI) based optical and electronic devices. The split mode can provide large and variable frequency deviation for the FSK signal. 1 Gb/s NRZ signal is successfully converted to FSK format with a frequency deviation of 40 GHz, which can find application for interconnection between a metropolitan area networks (MAN) and a passive optical network (PON) system.

Abstract:We propose a novel and simple scheme to achieve NRZ-to-RZ format conversion and simultaneous wavelength multicasting based on a single-stage dual-arm electro-optic Mach–Zehnder modulator (MZM) and a short single mode fiber (SMF). The format conversion and wavelength multicast process are achieved by chirp compensation under the condition of generation of optical flat frequency comb. 40Gb/s NRZ-to-RZ conversion with one-to-five multiple-wavelength channel multicasting and transmission of the NRZ and the converted signals over 200km dispersion-managed fiber-link are successfully demonstrated by numerical simulation. Research results show that 40Gb/s 2ps RZ signal with wavelength-preserving can be obtained after format conversion. The converted RZ signal presents good transmission performance and can easily be multiplexed to 160Gb/s using optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) technology. All the multicast channels can be error free after 50km transmission. Besides, the conversion operation can also greatly reduce the timing jitter of the degraded NRZ signal due to the retiming function of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:This paper proposes and numerically investigated a novel high-speed wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) architecture with colorless user terminals based on the use of a different modulation scheme for downstream and upstream transmission. In the central office (CO), based on the carrier suppressing functionality of Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) and differential-phase-shift-keying to amplitude-shift-keying conversion using Mach-Zehnder delay interferometer, 40-Gb/s optical frequency shift keying (FSK) is generated and employed for transmitting the downstream data. In the remote node (RN) or optical network unit (ONU), the upstream data is re-modulated at 2.5-Gb/s by an intensity modulator and sent back to CO with the same fiber. Since only one light source is needed for each WDM channel, and the MZM to generate carrier suppressed signal can be shared by all the channels, a centralized 40-Gb/s WDM-PON access system with low-cost configuration is realized. Error free transmission over 20-km SMF can be observed for both downstream and upstream signals in our simulation. © 2008 SPIE.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a full-duplex integrated passive optical network (PON) and indoor optical wireless communication (OWC) system. For the PON part, an external cavity laser (ECL) and a directly modulated laser (DML) are used as optical sources for downlink and uplink, respectively. The OWC subsystem utilizes a visible light-emitting diode (LED) for downlink and an infrared LED (IR-LED) for uplink transmission. To enable high spectral efficiency (SE), high-speed transmission, and flexible multiple access with simplified optical network unit (ONU)-side digital signal processing (DSP), multilevel, multiband quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and hybrid 128/64/16 Nyquist single-carrier frequency domain equalization (N-SC-FDE) modulation are implemented in this paper. In terms of 62.5 MHz OWC N-SC-FDE signals, the system successfully delivered a further 140 cm indoor distance after transmitting over a span of 25 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) together with three subbands of 250 MHz PON signals. As a proof of concept, an integrated system of symmetrical full-duplex 5 Gb/s PON and 250 Mb/s OWC at each direction for three wired users and one wireless user is successfully achieved. The measured bit error ratios (BERs) for each user are all smaller than the 7% pre-forward-error-correction (pre-FEC) limit of 3.8 x 10(-3), which shows the promising potential and feasibility of this proposal to extend multiple services from metro areas to suburban areas.

Abstract:An all-optical format conversion (AOFC) scheme of star-m-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (star-mQAM) based on a nonlinear Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with nested-pump assisted nonlinear optical loop mirror (nested-PA-NOLM) is proposed and numerically simulated. In this scheme, input multi-Gbps star-8QAM signals can be converted into three quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signals (namely QPSK-A, -B and -C) through the PA-NOLM under different input power of the signal and the pump. The nonlinear MZI is formed by two PA-NOLMs of the upper and the lower arms, the former and the latter 3-dB optical couplers (OCs), a directional variable optical attenuator (VOA) in the upper arm and a directional variable phase shifter (VPS) in the lower arm. A VOA and a VPS are used to adjust the power ratio (PR) and relative phase shift (RPS) between any two of QPSK-A, -B and -C. When any two adjusted signals in QPSK-A, -B and -C are coherently superposed, the aggregated star-8QAM signal can be extracted again. Furthermore, the proposed scheme can also be used to convert the 20 Gbps bipolar 4-ary pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) signal into two 10 Gbps BPSK signals and a 20 Gbps QPSK signal. When the proposed scheme is combined with the phase-sensitive amplification (PSA), it can also be used to convert one 16QAM into two QPSK signals. The scheme performance is analyzed via constellation diagrams, power waveforms, the error vector magnitude (EVM) and the bit error rate (BER) of the optical signals. The scheme can not only be deployed in optical gateways to connect optical networks using different modulation formats, but also has a potential applied advantage in security information transmission between different optical networks.

Abstract:For the first time, we propose and demonstrate a novel three-level Signal allocation scheme OFDM PON architecture which makes the best use of OFDM characteristics. In the architecture, we produce five-carrier signal optically by MZM, use odd carriers modulating downlink data and retain even carriers for uplink data. Multiple signal distribution methods can be switched flexibly. By simulation, a small PON systems with four ONU based on this architecture was realized. Both the downlink and uplink transmission adopt 4-QAM-OFDM signal. The transmission rate will be demonstrated to exceed 10Gbit/s.

Abstract:We introduce a novel architecture for next generation passive optical network (PON) base on the Single-carrier Frequency Division Multiple Address (SC-FDMA) technique. Both downstream and upstream SCFDMA-PON transmissions (5 Gb/s total, 2.5 Gb/s for each user) are experimentally demonstrated over 22.2 km standard single mode fiber and an additional simulated 1:32 optical splitter. We also test the tolerance range of the synchronization error and prove it matches the cyclic prefix period in our scheme, which means the packet transmission accuracy from different optical network units can be relaxed in the upstream.

Abstract:This paper proposes and numerically investigates a novel high-speed wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) architecture with colorless user terminals based on the use of orthogonal modulation scheme for downstream and upstream transmission. The 40Gb/s optical frequency shift keyed (FSK) downstream data is generated based on carrier-suppressed modulation. At optical network unit, the downstream signal is directly re-modulated by the 2.5Gb/s up-stream data and sent back with the same fiber. Error free transmission over 20km single mode fiber can be observed for both downstream and upstream signals in our simulation. Power budget, tolerance of channel spacing, FSK tone spacing and dispersion are all investigated. Factors that might influence the stability of the system are analyzed and an extended hybrid wired/wireless version of the scheme is also given.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel integrated passive optical network (PON) and indoor visible light communication (VLC) system based on Nyquist single carrier frequency domain equalization (N-SC-FDE) modulation with direct detection. In this system, a directly modulated laser and a commercially available red light emitting diode are served as the transmitters of the PON and VLC, respectively. To enable high spectral efficiency, high-speed transmission, and flexible multiple access with simplified optical network unit-side digital signal processing, multilevel, multiband quadrature amplitude modulations 128/64/16 are implemented here. VLC N-SC-FDE signals are successfully delivered a further 30 cm indoor distance after transmitting over a span of 40 km single mode fiber (SMF) together with 3 sub-band PON signals. As a proof of concept, a 10 Gb/s PON and 500 Mb/s VLC integrated system for three wired users and one wireless user is successfully achieved, which shows the promising potential and feasibility of this proposal to extend multiple services from metropolitan to suburban areas.

Abstract:The wavelength-division multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) is considered to be a promising method to overlay or upgrade the existing optical access network. A centralized WDM-PON in which the downstream wavelength is reused to modulate the upstream has been studied comprehensively, for same wavelength operation of both downstream and upstream, colorless operation and source-free of optical network units (ONU) can be realized in such systems. We propose a scheme of centralized WDM-PON with non-return-to-zero/continuous-wave (NRZ/CW)polarization multiplexed downstream and remodulated upstream using a CW injection-locked Fabry-Perot (FP) laser.This scheme can eliminate the crosstalk of downstream data on the upstream and get higher extinction ratio of received downstream signal. Experiment with 22.2km transmission of 10-Gb/s downstream signal and 622-Mb/s upstream signal was realized using a commercial FP laser, with power penalties of 0.2dB and 0dB respectively. 2.5-Gb/s upstream signal using an injection locked FP laser was also investigated, and 61 modes within 25.4nm span were locked with side-mode suppression ratio of above 27dB. © 2008 SPIE.

Abstract:A fiber-optic parametric amplifier (FOPA)-based all-optical format conversion (AOFC) scheme is proposed and numerically simulated to achieve optical networks interconnection with different modulation formats. In this scheme, the power transfer function (PTF) and the relative phase shift (RPS) functions between the input and output optical signals for the single-pump FOPA are derived and numerically analyzed. For the input 20 Gbps bipolar 4-ary pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) signal, it can be converted into a BPSK signal (BPSK1) based on the power saturation characteristic of the PTF. By adjusting the input power of the input PAM4 signal, it can also be converted into a level-swapping PAM4 signal based on the single-pump FOPA. When the level-swapping PAM4 signal is sent into the single-pump FOPA with suitable power again, another BPSK signal (BPSK2) could also be generated. When the PAM4-to-BPSK format converter based on the single-pump FOPA is combined with the dual-pump FOPA (namely phase-sensitive amplifier, PSA), the 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) signal can also be de-aggregated into four BPSK signals or two quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signals. The constellation diagrams, the power waveforms, the error vector magnitude (EVM) and the bit error rate (BER) of the relevant optical signals are measured to evaluate the scheme performance. The scheme can be deployed at the optical gateway to realize optical networks interconnection using different modulation formats.

Abstract:All-optical format conversion from nonreturn-to-zero ON-OFF keying to binary phase-shift keying is demonstrated in a semiconductor optical amplifier-based nonlinear polarization switch. This conversion is realized by cross-phase modulation effect for phase encoding and nonlinear polarization rotation effect for amplitude equalization. In the experiment, error-free operation at 10 Gb/s is achieved with a receiver sensitivity penalty of 1.3 dB after single-ended detection.
