Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate generation of optical carrier suppressed-optical differential phase-shift keying (OCS-oDPSK) modulation format in radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems using one single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). This scheme realizes up-conversion of baseband data for down-link wireless service delivery, generation of remote local oscillator (LO) signal for down-conversion of uplink radio frequency (RF) signal, and remodulation of down-converted uplink data, thus lowering the cost of base stations (BSs) in full-duplex RoF systems. The proposed scheme is expected to be simple and compact due to the use of a single MZM. Furthermore, the OCS-oDPSK generation principle is extended to obtain an OCS-optical differential quadrature phase-shift keying (OCS-oDQPSK) signal by employing a dual-parallel MZM (DPMZM), which is useful to deliver multiple wireless services on the same RF carrier.

Abstract:In dynamic optical networking scenarios, it is desirable that the optical transmitter chooses the most suitable modulation format in order to achieve optimal transmission performance. Owing to the ability of switching among different modulation formats, flexible optical transmitters based on reconfigurable optical devices are becoming a key component for the implementation of future flexible optical networks. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a flexible 8-ary transmitter to achieve adaptive switching between 8-ary phase-shift keying (8PSK) and circular 8-ary quadrature-amplitude modulation (8QAM) through reconfiguration of two cascaded in-phase/quadrature (IQ) modulators with different driving signals and biasing conditions. An arbitrary binary quadrature-amplitude modulation (2QAM) with constant or non-constant amplitude is proposed and experimentally demonstrated using an IQ modulator. Then, optical 8PSK or 8QAM modulation formats are successfully synthesized when a standard squared QPSK modulator is cascaded with a constant-amplitude or non-constant-amplitude 2QAM, respectively. Abstract:Quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) is usually generated using an in-phase/quadrature (IQ) modulator in a balanced driving-condition, showing a square-shape constellation in complex plane. This conventional QPSK is referred to as square QPSK (S-QPSK) in this paper. On the other hand, when an IQ modulator is driven in an un-balanced manner with different amplitudes in in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) branches, a rectangular QPSK (R-QPSK) could be synthesized. The concept of R-QPSK is proposed for the first time and applied to optical eight-ary phase-shift keying (8PSK) transmitter. By cascading an S-QPSK and an R-QPSK, an optical 8PSK could be synthesized. The transmitter configuration is based on two cascaded IQ modulators, which also could be used to generate other advanced multi-level formats like quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) when different driving and bias conditions are applied. Therefore, the proposed transmitter structure has potential to be deployed as a versatile transmitter for synthesis of several different multi-level modulation formats for the future dynamic optical networks. A 30-Gb/s optical 8PSK is experimentally demonstrated using the proposed solution.

Abstract:Through the research of 8PSK demodulation algorithm including carrier phase recovery and clock timing recovery, an all-digital 8PSK demodulator adaptive to next generation Digital Satellite Television Standard DVB-S2 is proposed. The carrier recovery algorithm consists of a frequency detector (FD) loop and a modified phase-frequency detector (PFD) loop. Its tracking range exceeds one time symbol-rate. The Gardner TED algorithm is used in clock timing recovery loop. All algorithms are prone to hardware implementation. By means of analysis and computer fixed point simulation, the optimal parameter of each loop has been determined. The symbol error performance under AWGN is also presented. The result of simulations indicates that the demodulator performance of SER (symbol error rate) is close to theoretical value and the architecture is realizable.

Abstract:A photonic quantization approach to implementing analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) in the optical domain with differential encoding employing a phase modulator and delay-line interferometers (DLIs) is proposed and demonstrated. In the proposed ADC system, the phase-modulated signal is sent to an array of DLIs that have identical time delay difference, but different phase shifts, which are employed to achieve quantization with differential encoding. A proof-of-concept experiment is performed. The quantization of a 10 GHz sinusoidal signal with a bit length of 4 is experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:A novel scheme for photonic vector signal generation based on a self-starting optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) and optical coherent quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) modulation is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The optical output sidebands of the OEO are employed for optical heterodyne mixing, where one first-order sideband is modulated by QPSK baseband data using a dual-parallel Mach–Zehnder modulator, followed by coherent detection so as to directly generate frequency-doubled K-band vector signals. In the experiment, a 19.9 GHz QPSK modulated vector signal with a bit rate of 100 Mb/s is generated when the OEO operates at 9.95 GHz. The generated signal is back demodulated with error vector magnitude (EVM) less than 7%.

Abstract:We propose a novel approach to realizing photonic analog-to-digital conversion in a system with a phase modulator (PM) and a delay-line interferometer (DLI). The phase modulation and interferometric demodulation techniques are employed to realize quantization and encoding. In the system, the phase-modulated signal is optically sampled by a multiwavelength pulsed source and the phase-shifted transfer functions of the DLI under different wavelengths are used for encoding. In the approach, the differential signal, but not the original analog signal, is encoded, which increases the equivalent number of bits. In addition, the balanced detection technique can be incorporated into the system to alleviate the influences of amplitude and timing jitter.
Fast carrier synchronization in TCM-8PSK short-packet fast-frequency-hopping system

Abstract:A new scheme of digital phase-locked loop (DPLL) based demodulator was presented for the fast carrier synchronization required in TCM-8PSK short-packet fast-frequency-hopping system. A comparison of bit error rate (BER) simulation was made amongst 4 DPLL-based TCM-8PSK demodulators, that is per-survivor processing (PSP) based phase detector and saw-tooth phase detector combined with first-order and second-order loop filters, respectively. Results showed that the DPLL comprising PSP-based phase detector and first-order loop filter exhibited outstanding BER performance through an AWGN channel and under short-packet constraints. Statistical information regarding the phase error acquired from this DPLL was obtained by Monte Carlo method, and improvements were made to the S-curve of the original phase detector, which reduced both the loop noise caused by phase error acquisition and the hardware overhead for implementation. BER simulation of the new DPLL adopting improved phase detector and first-order loop filter showed a 0.4-1.5 dB loss towards the theoretical values but also a 0.5-1.5 dB gain towards the original DPLL, when the IF signals were transmitted through an AWGN channel with SNR ranging from 5 to 15 dB and the carrier frequency offset was set up to 1‰ baud rate. This simulation result was in accordance with the practical performance of the implementation.

Abstract:The six-polarization shift keying quadrature (6PolSK-QPSK) has been proved to be an alternative to four-dimensional (4D) modulation scheme. A variety of transmission compensation schemes have been developed for 24-Point 6PolSK-QPSK combining the advantages of polarization multiplexing quadrature phase shift keying (PM-QPSK) and polarization switched quadrature phase shift keying (PS-QPSK). In order to further improve the transmission rate of the signal system, 32-Point 6PolSK-QPSK signal modulation has been studied. We propose a novel encoding rule and compensation scheme for 32-Point 6PolSK-QPSK modulation by classifying symbols. The simulation tool based on VPItransmissionMaker10.1 is equipped with 32-Point 6PolSK-QPSK signal transmission system and the off-line digital signal processing (DSP) module is applied to MATLAB to prove the method proposed in this paper. The simulation results show that the error performance of 2.6 dB and 8.7 dB are improved for unrevised and revised data transmission, compared with the 32-Point 6PolSK-QPSK signal scheme obtained by rotating PM-QPSK.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the generation of polarization-division-multiplexing quadrature-phase-shift-keying (PDM-QPSK) modulated vector signal adopting Mach–Zehnder-modulator-based (MZM-based) optical-carrier-suppression (OCS) intensity modulation and direct detection. The MZM is driven by a 6-GHz precoded vector signal carrying 2-Gbaud QPSK transmitter data, and biased at its minimum transmission point to realize OCS modulation. The phase of the 6-GHz precoded vector signal is 1/2 of that of the regular QPSK symbol. Only one polarization beam splitter (PBS) is needed to implement optical polarization diversity. The bit-error rate (BER) for the 2-Gbaud PDM-QPSK modulated vector signal can reach the hard-decision forward-error-correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8×10−3 after 80-km single-mode fiber-28 (SMF-28) transmission in the presence of optical dispersion compensation, and 80-km SMF-28 transmission causes no power penalty.

Abstract:An all-optical format conversion (AOFC) scheme for the input 30 Gbit/s rectangular 8-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (8QAM) signal is proposed and numerically investigated based on phase-sensitive amplification (PSA) and nonlinear Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). Firstly, the input rectangular 8QAM signal is orthogonal decomposed into the inphase and quadrature components based on PSA, respectively. The in-phase component is the 4-ary amplitude and phase shift keying (4APSK) signal and the quadrature component is the binary phase shift keying (BPSK) signal. Secondly, the converted 4APSK signal is transmitted into one piece of highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) to obtain the phase-distorted two-amplitude and two-phase (2A-2P) signal based on the self-phase modulation (SPM) effect. After adjusting the power of the 2A-2P signal, it is injected into one nonlinear MZI to eliminate the amplitude difference of the inner and the outer rings of the 2A-2P signal. The 2A-2P signal can be converted into the regular quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signal by the nonlinear MZI with phase preservation. Thirdly, the converted BPSK and QPSK signals are coherently superposed in one 3-dB optical coupler (OC) to get the aggregated rectangular 8QAM signal and other types of 8QAM signals. The proposed scheme can also be extended to realize the AOFC from the 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) signal to two QPSK signals. The constellation diagrams, amplitude and phase histograms, error vector magnitude (EVM) and bit error rate (BER) of the relevant optical signals are measured to evaluate the system performance. The proposed scheme can be equipped with the optical gateway to enable all-optical interconnection of optical networks with different modulation formats.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel and simple scheme for dual-polarization vector pay-load generation in an optical label switching network. The 8 Gbaud quadrature-phase-shift-keying (QPSK) payload, generated by one intensity modulator with signal precoding and optical carrier suppression, is first polarization-multiplexed by a polarization multiplexer, then combined with a 2.5 Gb/s label before being transmitted over 20 km single-mode fiber, and finally separated from the label and recovered by the receiver with less than 2 dB power penalty. The proposed scheme can facilitate label insertion and is suitable for an optical label switching network with a simple architecture.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel scheme which can simultaneously realize wavelength-preserving and phase-preserving amplitude noise compression of a 40 Gb/s distorted non-return-to-zero differential-phase-shift keying (NRZ-DPSK) signal. In the scheme, two semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) are exploited. The first one (SOA1) is used to generate the inverted signal based on SOA's transient cross-phase modulation (T-XPM) effect and the second one (SOA2) to regenerate the distorted NRZ-DPSK signal using SOA's cross-gain compression (XGC) effect. In the experiment, the bit error ratio (BER) measurements show that power penalties of constructive and destructive demodulation at BER of 10-9 are -1.75 and -1.01 dB, respectively. As the nonlinear effects and the requirements of the two SOAs are completely different, quantum-well (QW) structures has been separately optimized. A complicated theoretical model by combining QW band structure calculation with SOA's dynamic model is exploited to optimize the SOAs, in which both interband effect (carrier density variation) and intraband effect (carrier temperature variation) are taken into account. Regarding SOA1, we choose the tensile strained QW structure and large optical confinement factor to enhance the T-XPM effect. Regarding SOA2, the compressively strained QW structure is selected to reduce the impact of excess phase noise induced by amplitude fluctuations. Exploiting the optimized QW SOAs, better amplitude regeneration performance is demonstrated successfully through numerical simulation. The proposed scheme is intrinsically stable comparing with the interferometer structure and can be integrated on a chip, making it a practical candidate for all-optical amplitude regeneration of high-speed NRZ-DPSK signal.

Abstract:We investigate the use of differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) with a reduced modulation depth (RMD) as the downstream modulation format to enhance the tolerance to both chromatic dispersion and remodulation timing misalignment. Despite the RMD, in each optical network unit the demodulated DPSK signal from the destructive port of the delay-interferometer still maintains a high extinction ratio (ER), whereas the signal from the constructive port has a very low ER and can be readily remodulated by the upstream signal. Error-free operation at 10 Gb/s was achieved in a 20-km-reach experiment without dispersion compensation and remodulation synchronization.
