Abstract:Quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) is usually generated using an in-phase/quadrature (IQ) modulator in a balanced driving-condition, showing a square-shape constellation in complex plane. This conventional QPSK is referred to as square QPSK (S-QPSK) in this paper. On the other hand, when an IQ modulator is driven in an un-balanced manner with different amplitudes in in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) branches, a rectangular QPSK (R-QPSK) could be synthesized. The concept of R-QPSK is proposed for the first time and applied to optical eight-ary phase-shift keying (8PSK) transmitter. By cascading an S-QPSK and an R-QPSK, an optical 8PSK could be synthesized. The transmitter configuration is based on two cascaded IQ modulators, which also could be used to generate other advanced multi-level formats like quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) when different driving and bias conditions are applied. Therefore, the proposed transmitter structure has potential to be deployed as a versatile transmitter for synthesis of several different multi-level modulation formats for the future dynamic optical networks. A 30-Gb/s optical 8PSK is experimentally demonstrated using the proposed solution.

Abstract:In dynamic optical networking scenarios, it is desirable that the optical transmitter chooses the most suitable modulation format in order to achieve optimal transmission performance. Owing to the ability of switching among different modulation formats, flexible optical transmitters based on reconfigurable optical devices are becoming a key component for the implementation of future flexible optical networks. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a flexible 8-ary transmitter to achieve adaptive switching between 8-ary phase-shift keying (8PSK) and circular 8-ary quadrature-amplitude modulation (8QAM) through reconfiguration of two cascaded in-phase/quadrature (IQ) modulators with different driving signals and biasing conditions. An arbitrary binary quadrature-amplitude modulation (2QAM) with constant or non-constant amplitude is proposed and experimentally demonstrated using an IQ modulator. Then, optical 8PSK or 8QAM modulation formats are successfully synthesized when a standard squared QPSK modulator is cascaded with a constant-amplitude or non-constant-amplitude 2QAM, respectively. Abstract:We propose a photonic method for generating millimeter-wave 4-QAM/QPSK modulated signals. The method is based on optical phase modulation by multilevel electrical signals and optical carrier-suppression. Simulation results are presented for 2.5 Gsymbol/s 4-QAM and QPSK signals at a 36 GHz carrier. Furthermore, this method can be extended to generate millimeter-wave m-PSK signals and can be incorporated into broadband radio-over-fiber systems to support wireless/ wireline converged access network.

Abstract:A novel scheme for photonic vector signal generation based on a self-starting optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) and optical coherent quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) modulation is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The optical output sidebands of the OEO are employed for optical heterodyne mixing, where one first-order sideband is modulated by QPSK baseband data using a dual-parallel Mach–Zehnder modulator, followed by coherent detection so as to directly generate frequency-doubled K-band vector signals. In the experiment, a 19.9 GHz QPSK modulated vector signal with a bit rate of 100 Mb/s is generated when the OEO operates at 9.95 GHz. The generated signal is back demodulated with error vector magnitude (EVM) less than 7%.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a cost-effective 80-Gbit/s DPSK transmitter using phase interleaving without optical-time/polarization-division multiplexing. Two cascaded independent 40-Gbit/s modulations are time-interleaved to generate 80-Gbit/s DPSK with high spectrum efficiency: 20-dB bandwidth of only 0.68 nm.

Abstract:Wavelength conversion and five-channel multicasting for 20 Gbit/s quadrature phase-shift keying signals have been experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide with digital coherent detection. The eye diagrams and constellation diagrams of the converted and multicasting idlers are successfully observed. Moreover, the bit-error rates (BERs) of the generated idlers are measured and the power penalties are all less than 0.7 dB at a BER of 3×10(-3).

Abstract:In this study, a novel photonic vector signal at frequency (RF) bands generation scheme based on the beating of double single sidebands (SSBs) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The double SSBs carry separate constant-or multi-amplitude quadrature-amplitude-modulation vector signals are generated from a single I/Q modulator. By adopting phase and amplitude precoding, different constellations can be generated, such as 3-ary phase-shift keying (PSK), 4-PSK, 7-PSK, 8-PSK, and so on. In this work, 10-Gbaud 7-PSK vector signal generation at 20 GHz enabled by two precoded 4-PSK SSB signals via a single I/Q modulator is theoretically and experimentally investigated. Compared to a single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator or conventional I/Q modulator-based photonic vector signal generation scheme, the spectrum efficiency can be doubled. Differential coding is also implemented at the transmitter side for accurate demodulation of 7-PSK into two 4-PSK signals. The bit-error ratio for 10-Gbaud 7-PSK vector signals can be under hard-decision forward-error-correction threshold of 3.8 x 10(-3) after 10 km standard single-mode fiber transmission. Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate generation of optical carrier suppressed-optical differential phase-shift keying (OCS-oDPSK) modulation format in radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems using one single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). This scheme realizes up-conversion of baseband data for down-link wireless service delivery, generation of remote local oscillator (LO) signal for down-conversion of uplink radio frequency (RF) signal, and remodulation of down-converted uplink data, thus lowering the cost of base stations (BSs) in full-duplex RoF systems. The proposed scheme is expected to be simple and compact due to the use of a single MZM. Furthermore, the OCS-oDPSK generation principle is extended to obtain an OCS-optical differential quadrature phase-shift keying (OCS-oDQPSK) signal by employing a dual-parallel MZM (DPMZM), which is useful to deliver multiple wireless services on the same RF carrier.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an optical amplitude and phase multiplexing scheme to generate a multilevel modulation format signal, return-to-zero eight-amplitude and phase-shifted keying (RZ-8-APSK). The proposed optical amplitude and phase multiplexing is mainly based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear fiber. Cross-absorption modulation in an electroabsorption modulator is employed to intentionally adjust the extinction ratio of the generated RZ-8-APSK signal. Amplitude and phase information carried in the inputs is multiplexed and transparently transferred to the generated FWM components. In the experiment, 30-Gb/s RZ-8-APSK signals are generated from input 10-Gb/s on-off keying and 20-Gb/s RZ differential quadrature phase-shifted keying in an all-optical manner.

Abstract:We numerically and experimentally investigate high-speed quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) vector signal generation based on a single Mach-Zehnder intensity modulator employing a precoding technique. We experimentally demonstrate 16-Gbaud QPSK vector signal generation at 16-GHz carrier adopting optical carrier suppression with precoding technique, and it is the highest baud rate generated by this technology. The 16-Gbaud QPSK modulated vector signal is delivered over a 20-km large effective area fiber or 2-km single-mode fiber with a bit-error-rate less than the hard-decision forward-error-correction threshold of 3.8 x 10(-3). Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a reconfigurable multilevel transmitter using a monolithically-integrated quad Mach-Zehnder in-phase/quadrature (QMZ-IQ) modulator with binary driving electronics. Different from previous parallel-integrated quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) transmitter solutions, only one electrode is required to adjust the relative phase offset among embedded sub-Mach-Zehnder modulators in the proposed IQ superstructure. By feeding different RF driving electronics and operating the integrated modulator as different bias conditions, different advanced multilevel modulation formats, such as QAM and 8-ary phase-shift keying (8-PSK), could be synthesized. In this paper, a 40-Gb/s 16-QAM and a 30-Gb/s 8-PSK are generated using the proposed multilevel transmitter, respectively. Offline digital processing is employed for bit-error rates estimation and constellation reconstruction.

Abstract:The generation of coherent and frequency-locked optical multi-carriers by using cascaded phase modulators and recirculating frequency shifter (RFS) based on an erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) loop has been investigated theoretically and experimentally for a multi-terabit optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) superchannel transmission. The phase and amplitude relationship between RF driving signals of two cascaded phase modulators and the impact of EDFA gain are analyzed. Experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical analysis. The 112 coherent and frequency-locked subcarriers obtained after tilt filtering exhibit a tone-to-noise ratio of larger than 26 dB, a power fluctuation of less than 5 dB, and a frequency spacing of 25 GHz giving a 22.6 nm-wide optical OFDM signal spectrum. By using this method, we have successfully generated a 10-Tbit/s (112 x 100 Gbit/s) single optical OFDM polarization-division-multiplexing QPSK (PDM-QPSK) superchannel with an optical signal to noise ratio per OFDM subchannel greater than 20 dB at 0.1 nm bandwidth, and it has been transmitted over a 640-km SMF-28 and EDFA-only link with BER less than 2 x 10(-3).

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel synthesizing method for high-speed 8-ary quadratic-amplitude modulation (QAM) optical signal generation using commercial optical modulators with binary electrical driving signals. Using this method, we successfully generated 114-Gb/s pulse-duration modulation (PDM)-8QAM optical signals. Intradyne detection of PDM-8QAM optical signals with robust blind polarization demultiplexing has been demonstrated by using a new cascaded multimodulus equalization algorithm. With return-to-zero-shaped PDM-8QAM modulation and the proposed blind polarization demultiplexing algorithm, we demonstrate transmission of a record 32-Tb/s fiber capacity (320 × 114 Gb/s) over 580 km of ultralow-loss single-mode fiber-28 fiber by utilizing C+L-band erbium-doped fiber-amplifier-only optical amplification and single-ended coherent detection technique at an information spectral efficiency of 4.0 bit/s·Hz.

Abstract:We propose a novel scheme for high-frequency quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) photonic vector signal generation based on a single directly modulated laser (DML) employing photonic frequency quadrupling and balanced pre-coding technologies. In order to realize frequency quadrupling, a wavelength selective switch (WSS) is intruded in our experiment. The intruded WSS combined with DML can not only realize high-frequency vector signal generation but also simplify the architecture. We experimentally demonstrate 1-or 2-Gbaud QPSK vector signal generation at 88GHz based on our proposed scheme. The generated 1-Gbaud balanced pre-coded QPSK vector signal is transmitted 0.5-m wireless distance with the bit-error-ratio (BER) below hard-decision forward-error-correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8×10−3. To our knowledge, this is the first time to demonstrate W-band mm-wave vector signal based on a single DML with quadrupling frequency and pre-coding technologies.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate the generation of a 10-Gb/s return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (RZ-DPSK) signal based on a directly modulated chirp-managed laser (CML), without requiring any differential encoder and optical phase modulator (PM). It shows better fiber chromatic dispersion tolerance and comparable nonlinearity tolerance, compared with a LiNbO PM-based RZ-DPSK signal using 2(31) - 1 pseudo-random bit sequence data.
