Abstract:In this paper, we fabricate an ultra-small 20Gb/s differential quadrature phase-shift keying (DQPSK) demodulator using silicon based microring resonators and show that the separation between the microring resonance and optical carrier can be tuned for DQPSK demodulation at different bit rates. The double-waveguide microring resonators enable detection of I (in phase) and Q (quadrature phase) signals as well as inverted I and Q signals simultaneously. Experimental verification is performed for DQPSK demodulation using a single waveguide microring. We generate DQPSK signal in a serial configuration and demodulate the I or Q channel by offsetting the resonance peak. The offset between the resonance and center carrier is adjusted to be 4.87GHz and the phase shift (phase offset) is calculated to be exactly π/4.

Abstract:We report a new differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) receiver design which utilizes a single demodulator and can receive polarization division multiplexed signals. This system provides less than 3 dB power penalty at bit-error rate (BER) of 10−9 after 60 km of optical fiber transmission.

Abstract:We numerically and experimentally investigate high-speed quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) vector signal generation based on a single Mach-Zehnder intensity modulator employing a precoding technique. We experimentally demonstrate 16-Gbaud QPSK vector signal generation at 16-GHz carrier adopting optical carrier suppression with precoding technique, and it is the highest baud rate generated by this technology. The 16-Gbaud QPSK modulated vector signal is delivered over a 20-km large effective area fiber or 2-km single-mode fiber with a bit-error-rate less than the hard-decision forward-error-correction threshold of 3.8 x 10(-3). Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a cost-effective 80-Gbit/s DPSK transmitter using phase interleaving without optical-time/polarization-division multiplexing. Two cascaded independent 40-Gbit/s modulations are time-interleaved to generate 80-Gbit/s DPSK with high spectrum efficiency: 20-dB bandwidth of only 0.68 nm.

Abstract:This paper demonstrates bandwidth requirement for optical DPQSK transmitter using one Dual-drive Mach Zehnder Modulator (DDMZM) for 100Gb/s physical transmission. The result shows that at receiver bandwidth of 40GHz, NRZDQPSK signal requires 60GHz modulation bandwidth at least, while RZ-DQPSK scheme demands less bandwidth, about 40GHz for 50% duty cycle RZ-DQPSK signal.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate polarization-division-multiplexing quadrature-phase-shift-keying (PDM-QPSK) modulated vector signal generation at the W-band, adopting Mach-Zehnder-modulator-based (MZM-based) photonic frequency octupling and phase precoding techniques. The MZM biased at its maximum transmission point is driven by a 12-GHz precoded vector signal, which is generated by MATLAB programming and carries up to 4-GBd QPSK transmitter data. The phase of the 12-GHz precoded vector signal is one eighth that of the regular QPSK symbol to overcome the phase octupling effect accompanying the frequency octupling during square-law photodiode (PD) detection. Only one polarization beam splitter is needed to implement optical polarization diversity. The generated 96-GHz vector signal can carry up to 4-GBd PDM-QPSK data. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the generation and reception of the polarization multiplexing vector signal has been recognized by one external intensity modulator at the W-band.

Abstract:For differential decoding, direct detection of DPSK signal needs a delay line interferometer with a free spectral range normally equal to the transmitted bit-rate. We numerically demonstrate that free spectral range optimization can increase tolerance to fiber Kerr nonlinearities for 40 Gbit/s RZ-DPSK transmission, especially for multi-format (RZ-DPSK and RZ-OOK) systems, in which Kerr nonlinearities is quite serious mainly due to cross-phase modulation. The optimal delay time of the delay line interferometer in DPSK signal demodulation is shorter than one bit-period. Joint optimization of free spectral range and optical filter bandwidth will further enhance system tolerance to nonlinear transmission.

Abstract:We report phase-transparent DQPSK data exchange using parametric depletion in a highly nonlinear fiber. 100-Gbit/s DQPSK data exchange is demonstrated with a power penalty less than 5dB. Pump misalignment tolerance (+/-2ps) and input signal power dynamic range (~20dB) are investigated.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a demodulation scheme for 20 Gbaud/s nonreturn-to-zero differential quadrature phase-shift keying signals using a silicon microring resonator. Either the I or Q channel can be selected by electrical tuning using the carrier depletion effect. Error-free (bit error rate <10(-9)) operations can be achieved for both the I and Q channels with similar to 1.5 dB power penalty compared with a commercial 20 GHz Mach-Zehnder delay interferometer. The tuning range of the ring resonator can be up to 60 GHz, which enables operation over a wide range of data rates. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate 8 x 240-Gb/s super-Nyquist wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) polarization-division-multiplexing quadrature-phase-shift-keying (PDM-QPSK) signal transmission on a 50-GHz grid with a net spectral efficiency (SE) of 4b/s/Hz adopting hardware-efficient simplified heterodyne detection. 9-ary quadrature-amplitude-modulation-like (9QAM-like) processing based on multi-modulus blind equalization (MMBE) is adopted to reduce analog-to-digital converter (ADC) bandwidth requirement and improve receiver sensitivity. The transmission distance at the soft-decision forward-error-correction (SD-FEC) threshold of 2 x 10(-2) is 2 x 420km based on digital post filtering while largely extended to over 5 x 420km based on 9QAM-like processing, which well illustrates 9QAM-like processing is more efficient for heterodyne coherent WDM system. Moreover, only two ADC channels are needed for simplified heterodyne detection of one 60-Gbaud PDM-QPSK WDM channel, and thus only one commercial oscilloscope (OSC) with two input ports can work well for each WDM channel. Abstract:Using differential detection, we perform polarization-multiplexing 160-Gb/s optical non-return-to-zero (NRZ) differential quadrature phase shift keying (DQPSK) signal transmission over 100-km standard single mode fiber at a bit error rate (BER) of less than 10(-9). The enabling technology includes clock recovery, fine dispersion compensation, and polarization tracking for de-multiplexing. Furthermore, a hybrid clock recovery scheme is proposed. The scheme is realized with ordinary devices using an optoelectrical modulator to down-convert the clock frequency and a phase-locked loop for filtering, which can provide an indication signal that simultaneously monitors residual dispersion and tracking polarization.

Abstract:Optical differential quadrature phase shift keying(DQPSK) signal demodulation is one of the key technologies to accomplish a phase-modulated optical fiber communication system. In this paper, we design and setup a 2-bit delay interferometer(DI) utilizing YVO4 crystals, which is used as a DQPSK signal demodulator. Compared with the traditional DI usually based on fibers, the crystal based DI gains an advantage of higher temperature stability, which therefore will have a broad prospect in application as a key device capable of optical DQPSK demodulating. We set up a 20 Gb/s optical NRZ-DQPSK back-to-back system, which achieve great success in demodulation of NRZ-DQPSK signal. The experimental results well agree with the simulation results calculated by computers.

Abstract:The paper presents the design of all-digital QPSK demodulator based on DVB-S specification and gives the detailed expatiation for algorithms and architecture of two sub-loops: Frequency Recovery Loop and Phase Trace Loop. In order to meet the requirement of SNR, a self-designing structure of Frequency Corrector is proposed. The experiment result shows that the whole system totally satisfies the requirement of SNR described in DVB-S spec.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a new 4-bit/symbol optical data format based on simultaneously modulating dark return-to-zero (DRZ), differential quadrature phase-shift keying (DQPSK) and polarization-shift-keying (PoISK) for 100Gbit/s applications. Through numerical simulation, we show the differential tolerance of the three dimension modulation format toward polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) and chromatic dispersion. The receiver sensitivities of three different combined modulation formats, with those of DRZ, DQPSK and PoISK, are compared respectively, while extinction ratio of DRZ is changed. The proposed three dimension orthogonal modulation format has a more compact spectrum and is more tolerant to phase noise compared with DQPSK for 100Gbit/s transmission.

Abstract:In this paper, design and fabrication of a substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) with 14-28 GHz bandwidth is implemented. The SIW-based system with Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) modulation and demodulation technique is designed and implemented. The measurement results show that the proposed system has up to 8 Gbps transmission data rate, which doubles the transmission rate compared with traditional mixing system. The demonstrated system is verified to be an effective interconnect system for ultra high speed transmission.
