Abstract:This paper proposes an opto-electronic co- simulation method to evaluate a fast clock and data recovery (CDR) technique for optically switched data centers. The CDR technique is realized by leveraging a phase updating mechanism and also a global synchronous clock. Briefly, in all-optical networks, by applying a global synchronous clock to both transmitters and receivers, CDR will only need to extract phase delay in the receiver node, and then by compensating the phase delay in the transmitter node, the phase locking-process in RX CDR module can be omitted. This can significantly reduce the CDR locking time. The structure is crucial in supporting server-to-server optical communication but is not sufficiently studied in our perspective. In this paper, we add more analysis to the CDR technique and give circuit-level improvements. The analysis and circuit verifications are conducted by designing a novel opto-electronic co-simulation method, where software Opti-system is employed to carry out optical-related simulations, and MATLAB Simulink is employed to carry out electrical related simulations. We first test the validity of the phase updating mechanism with a specifically designed phase interpolator and a modified bang-bang phase detector. Then we analyze the influence of channel jitters and optical carrier power variations. It’s shown that the CDR technique can tolerate channel deterministic jitter and random jitter of 0.5UI and 0.1UI respectively, and can tolerate a carrier power variation from 0dBm to 2dBm.
