Abstract:Patterned tungsten oxide (WO <inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">3</inf> ) nanowires are grown on ITO glass substrate by a thermal oxidation without any catalyst. Field emission measurements show that the field emission current of WO <inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">3</inf> nanowires can be dramatically enhanced by a conditioning process. After conditioning, the turn-on voltage of the WO <inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">3</inf> nanowires decreases from 6.50 MV/m to 3.28 MV/m. The phenomenon is related the oxygen adsorbate on the surface of WO <inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">3</inf> nanowires.

Abstract:Achieving high current emission from one-dimensional nanowire (NW) field emitters is essential for their application as X-ray sources. In this study, field emission (FE) from tungsten trioxide NWs (WO3 NWs) was studied, and defects were found to be responsible for the high electron emission current density. A high current density of 13.75 mA/cm(2) was achieved from large area, uniformly patterned, and defect-rich monoclinic WO3 NWs, which were grown directly on indium tin oxide (ITO) glass. Comparative investigations were carried out on the field emission properties of individual NWs with different defect concentrations. The results indicated that defect-related electrical transport was the source of such high emission current. This conclusion was further confirmed by a theoretical calculation that considered both defect-related electrical transport and Joule heating in the FE process. The conductivity induced by the defects increases with rising temperature, and this mechanism regulated the Joule heating during emission and helped to achieve high current density. Furthermore, a flat panel X-ray source device using as-grown defect-rich WO3 NWs as a cold cathode was fabricated and used to image various objects. Clear X-ray images with a spatial resolution of approximately 25 mu m were obtained.
The Field-Emission and Current−Voltage Characteristics of Individual W5O14 Nanowires

Abstract:The field-emission and current-voltage characteristics of individual W5O14 nanowires were studied using a transmission electron microscope and a field-emission microscope. The individual W5O14 nanowires made good ohmic contacts with W and Pt at room temperature and had excellent field-emission properties. The field-emission measurements showed that a current as high as 35 mu A can be extracted from a single nanowire. A reduced angular current density of 28.7 nAsr(-1)V(-1) was obtained from a W5O14 nanowire with a sharp tip. These results suggest that W(5)O(14)nanowires might be a realistic candidate as the source for a low-energy electron beam.

Abstract:In this paper large area tungsten trioxide (WO3) nanosheets and nanoribbons are synthesized by directly heating tungsten plates covered with potassium iodide (KI). The field emission properties of the as-grown samples are systematically measured. A 10 μA/cm current density is obtained from both samples under a 5.5 V/μm average field, while the average fields that extracted a current density of 1.0 mA/cra were 8.2 and 11.1 V/μm for the nanosheets and nanoribbons, respectively. Also, the emission sites are found to distribute uniformly on the whole sample surface. In the preliminary test on the stability, the WO3 nanosheets, which had larger surface area, exhibited better robustness than the WO3 nanoribbons. These findings have demonstrated the application perspectives of nanometer-scale tungsten oxide as future cold electron sources.

Abstract:A very simple catalyst-free approach to fabricate tungsten oxide nanowire arrays on large area silicon substrate is reported. A set of tungsten wires is used as tungsten source. Silicon substrates are placed on a holder /spl sim/2 mm beneath the wires. The chamber is pumped to 1 /spl times/ 10/sup -2/ Torr and high purity argon is introduced. The tungsten wires are then heated by passing current through them sequentially. At high temperature, the surface is oxidized by the residual oxygen in the vacuum chamber. As a result, tungsten oxide NW arrays are grown on the silicon substrates. Field emission measurements on these nanowires show turn on field of about 9 MV/m which is defined as the macroscopic field required to produce a current density of 10 /spl mu/A/cm/sup 2/.

Abstract:A structure composed of zinc oxide nanowires (ZNWs) grown hydrothermally on an array of vertically aligned carbon nanofibers (CNFs) was fabricated and its field emission properties determined and compared with bare CNF arrays. The combination produced a macroscopic turn-on field of 1.2 V/μm which was found to be the lowest reported from ZNWs deposited on a two-dimensional substrate and much less than the equivalent CNFs array (5.2 V/μm). Crucially, field emission was found to be much more stable at higher pressures of 5×10−6 mbar without exhibiting current degradation for a fixed external field, while emitting with a current density of 1 mA/cm2, the current density typically required for backlighting and field emission displays. We propose a self-ballasting mechanism, in which the low carrier density in the zinc oxide prevents current runaway in the presence of adsorbed species.

The structure and composition of the nanowires were characterized by high resolution tunneling electron microscopy (HRTEM) and energy dispersive X-ray scattering (EDX), respectively. Abstract:This article focuses on the field emission from a small number of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires. ZnO nanowires were grown directly on W tips and their field emission was studied in a traditional field emission microscope (FEM). The FEM pattern of a single ZnO nanowire was ring shaped, indicating that most of the emission from the (0001) facets of the ZnO nanowires came from their circumferences. Scanning electron microscopy observation, measurement of dependence of the emission current on the applied cathode voltage (I-V behavior), and acquirement of FEM patterns were performed before and after heat treatment of the samples, respectively. The heat treatment was found to play either a favorable or an unfavorable role. It could lead to a stable emission or damage of the emitters, depending on the heating conditions.

Abstract:W18O49 nanowires have demonstrated good field emission properties, such as low turn-on filed and high current density. However, their emission uniformity still needs improvement, which is an important issue for large area application such as field emission display. In present study, we reported an in-situ plasma treatment method using Ar and H2 to improve the emission uniformity of tungsten oxide nanowires. Increase of emission site was observed and the method has proved to be an effective method.

Abstract:In this paper, a systematic study of large-scale production of highly crystalline W18O49 nanoneedles with high aspect ratios using a simple tungsten metal reacting with water at 800-1000 degreesC has been described. By altering the W source and other experimental conditions, we have generated W18O49 crystals with diverse morphologies, and needles with desired dimensions are achieved. The quality nanoneedles provide ideal samples for further property investigations. Possible growth mechanisms are discussed.

Abstract:A novel lift-off method has been developed for fabricating patterned W18O49 nanowires in vertical arrays and on a large scale. These W18O49 nanowire arrays have an average diameter of about 30 nm, and their lengths range from 2-3 mm. In every pattern of a 2 inch sample, the nanowires exhibit the same morphology and growth density. They are single crystals with monoclinic structure and grow along the [010] direction. Field emission (FE) measurements show that they have a turn-on field of 6.2 V mu m(-1) and their emission current density can reach 500 mu A cm(-2) at an electric field of 10.9 V mu m(-1). Because the W18O49 nanowire patterns synthesized by this simple method still have good FE performance, comparable to many cathode nanostructures with excellent FE properties, it suggests that it may provide an effective and simple preparation technique for patterned growth of nanowire arrays in future FE applications.

Abstract:In this work, needle-shaping of tungsten oxide nanowires occurred during field emission characterization. Compared with nanowires with a flat apex, needle-shaped emitters showed a lower threshold field of 11.9 V mu m(-1) for 1 mA cm(-2) and a higher emission current of 1120 mu A at 16.2 V mu m(-1). Most notably, the measured ageing current dramatically increased by more than four times until it slightly decreased, tending towards stability. In addition, the samples showed striking difference in their nonlinear Fowler-Nordheim plot before and after ageing tests. Selected area diffraction and transmission electron microscope characterizations were used to further study these amazing results.

Abstract:W18O49 nanowires have been intensively studied in recent years due to their good field emission (FE) performances. However, now their development has encountered difficulties, i.e., their emission uniformity is not good enough for high resolution field emission display (FED) applications. Here, we have successfully fabricated patterned, large-scale W18O49 nanowire vertical-arrays and for the first time applied an in situ plasma treatment technique to improve their field emission performance. It is found that their emission uniformity has been improved to a very high level (distribution uniformity of emission sites is higher than 96% and their brightness uniformity reaches 75.64%), while other emission properties remained unchanged compared to untreated nanowires. The bombardment of Ar plasma and the reduction of H-2 plasma may be responsible for the improvement of their FE performance. It can be concluded that this developed technique is a very effective route to enhance the emission uniformity of patterned W18O49 nanowire arrays, which may pave the way for FE emission behavior improvement of other metal oxide nanowires.

Abstract:Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires with an average diameter of 15nm were grown using a vapor phase transport process. Field emission was achieved from these nanowires in spite of their random orientation. The electric field for the extraction of a 10μA/cm2 current density was measured to range from 4.4 to 5.0V/μm, and that for a 1mA/cm2 current density from 7.6 to 8.7V/μm, depending on whether the sample was submitted to a heat treatment. The results exhibit the potential application of ZnO nanowires as field emitters in future flat panel displays.

Abstract:We prepared large-area patterned tungsten oxide nanowire arrays on glass substrate by thermal oxidation method. The as-synthesized tungsten oxide nanowires have high aspect ratio up to 150. Field emission measurement shows that the tungsten oxide nanowire arrays have excellent field emission properties and good emission uniformity with a turn-on field of 6.3 V/μm.

Abstract:Nanostructured WO3 arrays fabricated by tungsten hot-filament chemical vapor deposition in an oxygen/argon gas mixture were studied in order to develop field-emission materials. Nanostructured WO3 arrays of different shapes were grown by controlling the substrate temperature and the distance from the hot filament. We observed that their field-emission properties strongly depended on their tip structure. Numerical calculations of field enhancement factors for different tip geometries were carried out to explain the experimental results. The numerical result reveals that the planar tip structure may help nanostructured WO3 arrays exhibit better field-emission properties.

Abstract:Field emission devices using a wet-processed composite cathode of carbon nanotube films coated with titanium dioxide exhibit outstanding field emission characteristics, including ultralow turn on field of 0.383V mu m(-1) and threshold field of 0.657V mu m(-1) corresponding with a very high field enhancement factor of 20 000, exceptional current stability, and excellent emission uniformity. The improved field emission properties are attributed to the enhanced edge effect simultaneously with the reduced screening effect, and the lowered work function of the composite cathode. In addition, the highly stable electron emission is found due to the presence of titanium dioxide nanoparticles on the carbon nanotubes, which prohibits the cathode from the influence of ions and free radical created in the emission process as well as residual oxygen gas in the device. The high-performance solution-processed composite cathode demonstrates great potential application in vacuum electronic devices. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.
A Low-Temperature Method to Selected-Area Synthesis of Tungsten Oxide Nanowire Arrays and Investigation on Their Field Emission Properties

Abstract:WO3-x(0≤x<3) nanostructures are very attractive for field emitters because their low threshold field,high aspect ratio and high current density capacity.But in their development,there are many technique problems existing in their applications,such as high-temperature needed for growing,mixed phases conexisting which cause nonuniform.By adjusting the type of catalysts,the controlled growth of micro-patterned WO2 and WO3 nanowire arrays have been firstly realized at low temperature(450 to 600℃).It is found that the turn-on field and threshold field of micro-patterned WO2 nanowire arrays is respectively 0.8 MV/m and 2.46 MV/m.And the turn-on field and threshold field of micro-patterned WO3 nanowire arrays are found to be 0.65 MV/m and 2.9 MV/m,respectively.Their very excellent FE performance suggests that this novel growth method is a useful technique for low-temperature preparation of micro-patterned nanoemitter cathode arrays.

Abstract:Intensive investigation on WO3-x nanostructures has been carried out in the last decade because they possess extraordinary properties. Especially for application in field emission, W18O49 nanostructures have exhibited excellent performance. Some issues have to be addressed in fabricating vacuum microelectronic devices using W18O49 nanostructures, including how to realize well aligned nanostructure arrays with uniform phase and selected-area growth. Therefore, developing new approaches to synthesize patterned W18O49 nanostructure arrays is very necessary. Here, we report the controlled growth of patterned and aligned W18O49 nanowires by a simple lift-off technique.

Abstract:Field emission current stability and brightness are important criteria for commercial field emission point electron sources. Here, field emission point electron sources were fabricated from individual WO3 nanowires (NWs) and stable emission was achieved under ∼10−5 Pa. The reduced brightness of one of the emitter was ∼6.08 × 109 A m−2·sr−1 V−1, which was comparable to commercial cold cathode sources. One of the individual WO3 field emitters could operate at an emission current of 0.68 μA for tens of hours without degradation using a ballast resistor regulator. A current fluctuation of the emitter, at a low emission current of 155 nA, was 0.045% for the short-term. Its long-term fluctuation, at 0.68 μA, was 3.89% for 38 h. Besides the ballast resistor, inert surface of the oxide NW and low tip temperature owing to the defect-related field emission mechanism were proposed as the reasons for such high emission stability under mild high vacuum. Our result was significant in the development of stable field emission point sources.
