Abstract:Since the splicing problem is still a major limitation that hinders the widespread use of photonic crystal fiber (PCF), fusion splicing between PCF is thoroughly investigated in this paper. Two kinds of self-made PCF were used, and an effective fusion scheme was adopted to perform the splicing experiments. By combining experiments and numerical calculations, reasonable fusion parameters were set up and the mode fields at each fiber's end face were rescaled. Thus, the mode matching was greatly improved and low-loss, high strength splices were implemented (1) between a rotational symmetric PCF and a rotational asymmetric PCF, and (2) between two rotational asymmetric PCF, respectively. Dependence of splice loss on fiber rotation was also analyzed, which turned out to be closely related to the structural parameters (hole pitch and diameter) of the PCF. For the given asymmetric PCF in this paper, polarization maintaining splicer was unnecessary for splicing since the rotational effect on splice loss was negligible. It was justified that PCF could be simply spliced together relying only on commercial electric-arc splicers.
