Abstract:Recent advances in the fabrication and manipulation of sub-wavelength optical fibers provide new methods for building chemical and biological sensors, generating supercontinuum light by nonlinear pulse propagation, and constructing microphotonic components and devices. We examine the properties of sub-wavelength dimension optical fibers as waveguides. The reported silica submicrometer- or nanometer-diameter wires are suitable for low-loss optical wave guiding. Thanks to their excellent uniformity, large length, high flexibility, and strength, these wires can be manipulated and assembled with high accuracy.

Abstract:The precise control of the thermal splicing temperature of ZBLAN fiber and silica fiber was guaranteed by theoretical simulation, analysis, and experimental optimization. The thermal splicing model was established, and optimized thermal splicing parameters were obtained based on the simulation results. The thermal splicing parameters were finely repeatedly tuned and optimized further in the thermal splicing experiments according to simulation parameters. The achieved loss was measured to be about 0.3 dB in the thermal splice experiments. The offset thermal splicing method demonstrated a repeatable, low-loss, and promising technique for the splice of ZBLAN fiber to silica fiber. Abstract:We demonstrate Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZI) assembled using optical microfibers or nanofibers (MNFs) drawn from silica fibers and tellurite glasses. As-assembled MZIs, with dimensions of tens to hundreds of micrometers, show good interference fringes with extinction ratios of approximately 10 dB. The path-length difference of the MZI can be tuned by micromanipulation under an optical microscope. The MNF-assembled MZIs demonstrated here show advantages of easy fabrication, in situ tunability, and compact size.

Abstract:Among various nanostructures for low-dimensional photonics, the one-dimensional nanowire is of great importance owing to its capability of routing tightly confined light fields in single-mode with least space and material requirement, minimized optical path, and high mechanical flexibility. Free-standing optical nanowires or nanofibers fabricated by either chemical growth or physical drawing techniques surpass nanowaveguides fabricated by almost all other means in terms of sidewall smoothness and diameter uniformity, conveying their low waveguiding losses.With high index contrast between the core and the surrounding, a nanowire can guide light with tightly confined large fractional evanescent waves, which enables highly localized near-field interaction between the guided fields and the surrounding media. In this talk, we show the possibility of on-chip integration of free-standing optical nanofibers and nanowires. Firstly, by embedding nanofibers with microfluidic chips, we show ultrasensitive optical sensors for physical and bio-chemical detection. Secondly, by near-field coupling of free-standing nanowires/nanofibers with silicon-on-insulator waveguides, we show hybrid photonic circuits for optical modulation and light generation on silicon chips.

Abstract:Subwavelength- and nanometer-diameter glass nanofibers have been fabricated using a high-temperature taper-drawing process. As-drawn nanofibers show extraordinary uniformities in terms of diameter variation and surface roughness and are suitable for single-mode optical wave guiding. Measured optical losses of these nanofibers are typically below 0.1dB/mm. Photonic devices such as linear waveguides, optical couplers and microrings assembled with nanofibers are also demonstrated. Our results show that taper-drawn glass nanofibers are promising building blocks for micro- and nano-scale photonic devices.

Abstract:This paper proposes a high strength and low loss splicing method suitable for coupling between hollow-core photonic crystal fiber and single mode fiber, based on filament fusion technology. The essence of this method is keeping the temperature of the single mode fiber above the melting temperature, and that of the hollow-core photonic crystal fiber at around the softening point temperature by modifying several splice parameters, which can be pre-evaluated by numerical simulation. Experimental results have verified the accuracy of the numerical model, and ideal splicing results can be made under proper splice parameters. In this paper, repeatable splicing between hollow-core photonic crystal fiber and single mode fiber with a loss of less than 2.3 dB, and a strength higher than 38 Kpsi is demonstrated.

Abstract:We report fusion splicing nonsilica soft glass microfibers by using single pulses from a CO(2) laser. Splice loss of a 2-mu m-diameter phosphate glass microfiber is around 0.2 dB. By fusion splicing phosphate glass microfibers into closed-loop rings, we demonstrate a microfiber resonator with a Q-factor of about 25 000 and a 1.5-mu m-wavelength microring laser with a linewidth of about 0.05 nm. Our results suggest a potential approach to fabricating robust and versatile photonic components or devices out of soft glass microfibers that are excellent hosts for a variety of functional dopants.

Abstract:Splicing is an essential technique for optical microfibers. In this letter, we report on low-loss splicing of evanescent-wave-coupled microfibers by coating them with a low-index polymer named high-substituted hydroxypropyl cellulose (H-HPC). The polymer coating can significantly increase the overlap of mode fields and effectively enhance the coupling strength. As a result, the transmission ratio can reach 94% over a wavelength range of 100 nm by controlling the coating thickness and length. H-HPC coating also enables a high mechanical strength at the joint segment. The coated microfibers can stand a pulling force up to 1 N. Compared with existing techniques, the present splicing method offers a great operation convenience and easiness.

Abstract:Herein, we introduce a convenient and efficient drawing approach to fabricate and assemble functional polymeric fiber wires as a photonic bridge between waveguides for rapid and flexible splicing. We demonstrate that, by a simple one-step through-fiber drawing process, the photocurable polymeric wires with micron-diameter can be created. Experimental results reveal that the seamlessly integrated coupling construction between conventional single-mode fiber and microfiber can be realized by using the through-fiber drawing microwires, significantly, the through-fiber drawing microwires simultaneously function as waveguides and adhesives. Consequently, the easy construction and assembly of functional microfiber wires shown here has the potential to provide rapid, flexible, and long-lasting connection like coupling between photon-chip and conventional waveguide (such as fiber) in on-chip photonic devices, or with this approach, an optical circuit will be directly scribbled on the substrate.

Abstract:Optical micro/nanofibers (MNFs) taper-drawn from silica fibers possess intriguing optical and mechanical properties. Recently, MNF array or MNFs with identical geometries have been attracting more and more attention, however, current fabrication technique can draw only one MNF at a time, with a low drawing speed (typically 0.1 mm/s) and a complicated process for high-precision control, making it inefficient in fabricating multiple MNFs. Here, we propose a parallel-fabrication approach to simultaneously drawing multiple (up to 20) MNFs with almost identical geometries. For fiber diameter larger than 500 nm, measured optical transmittances of all as-drawn MNFs exceed 96.7% at 1550-nm wavelength, with a diameter deviation within 5%. Our results pave a way towards high-yield fabrication of MNFs that may find applications from MNF-based optical sensors, optical manipulation to fiber-to-chip interconnection.

Abstract:A method based on controlled air hole collapse for low-loss fusion splicing small-core photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) and single-mode fibers (SMFs) was demonstrated. A taper rig was used to control air hole collapse accurately to enlarge the MFDs of PCFs which was then spliced with SMFs using a fusion splicer. An optimum mode field match at the interface of PCF-SMF was achieved and a low-loss with 0.64dB was obtained from 3.57dB for a PCF with 4μm MFD and a SMF with 10.4μm MFD experimentally.

Abstract:An efficient and mechanically robust fusion splicing method for the splice of special soft glass fiber to standard silica fiber has been demonstrated. An asymmetric temperature gradient fusion splicing method created a temperature gradient between the special soft glass fiber and the silica fiber by heat conduction, hence met the fusion temperature requirement of the two fibers with different softening temperatures. Adding the preheating process avoided the over-softening at splicing interface of soft glass fibers and help to reduce the splicing losses causing by core offset and bending. In this paper, by adjusting parameters such as fusion splicing power, offset distance, preheating time and heating time, the minimum splicing loss of 0.49 dB between a 12/220 mu m fluorotellurite fiber and an 8.2/125 mu m silica fiber (SMF-28e) was achieved experimentally.

Abstract:Silica taper incorporated polymer micro or nanofibers have been fabricated by direct drawing. This method could provide stable and high-optical-coupling efficiency. The as-fabricated polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) fibers not only show low-optical losses, but also offer good flexibility, making them promising elements for sharp-bending waveguides and ring resonators. A low-loss microcoupler has been assembled with two 860-nm diameter PMMA fibers and a polymeric knot resonator with a loaded Q-factor of about 3000 has been assembled using a 3-mu m-diameter PMMA microfiber. Abstract:We demonstrated a novel method of low-loss splicing photonic crystal fiber (PCF) and single-mode fiber (SMF) by conventional electric arc fusion splicer, in which the air with proper pressure is injecting into the PCFs holes to control the collapse ratio and then an optimum mode field match at the joint of SMF/PCF is realized. The experimental results show that the splice loss at 1550nm is similar to 0.40 dB and similar to 1.05dB for solid-core PCF/SMF and hollow-core PCF/SMF, respectively. This method could be widely used to fabricate PCF Devices.

Abstract:Polymer nanofibers have highly configurable ability and good guiding properties,which is desirable for ultracompact microphotonic devices and miniaturized photonic integrated circuits.A polymer nanofiber-poly(trimethylene terephthalate)(PTT)nanofiber with good mechanical and optical properties is introduced,which is fabricated by one-step drawing process.As a subwavelengh waveguide,polymer nanofiber has tight-confinement ability and large evanescent optical field.A varies of PTT nanofibers-based ultracompact structures and devices(such as bends,rings,M×N optical coupling splitters,and Mach-Zehnder interferometers)are described in detail.These structures and devices have advantages of compact structure and low loss.Finally,the properties and application prospects of the polymer nanofibers and nanofiber devices are summarized.

Abstract:The optical fiber microtips can be utilized as a unique platform for various applications, including optical coupling, sensing, beam shaping and optomechanical systems. Here, we fabricate a polymer microtip between two SMFs and the whole device is integrated in a V-groove which is portable and reusable. Characteristics of the microtip bridge will be discussed. This integrated portable device can be used in various coupling and sensing applications.

Abstract:By assembling polymer micro/nanowires, 3D wire structures for photonic integrations were fabricated, including a 2 X 2 crossed structure, a 3 X 3 crossed structure, and a parallelogram structure. Optical waveguiding properties of the 3D wire structures were demonstrated with a measured insertion loss of 0.83 dB, on average, at 650 nm wavelength. Light can be transmitted vertically from one wire to another. Coupling efficiency between adjacent wires is tunable by changing the cross angle and the center-to-center distance. Abstract:A simple method for fabricating selective injection microstructured optical fibers (MOFs) using a conventional fusion splicer is described. The effects of fusion current, fusion duration and offset position on the hole collapse property of the MOFs are investigated. With this method, the central hollow-core and the holes in the cladding region can be selectively infiltrated, which allows for the fabrication of novel hybrid polymer-silica and liquid-silica MOFs for various applications.
