Abstract:This paper proposes a high strength and low loss splicing method suitable for coupling between hollow-core photonic crystal fiber and single mode fiber, based on filament fusion technology. The essence of this method is keeping the temperature of the single mode fiber above the melting temperature, and that of the hollow-core photonic crystal fiber at around the softening point temperature by modifying several splice parameters, which can be pre-evaluated by numerical simulation. Experimental results have verified the accuracy of the numerical model, and ideal splicing results can be made under proper splice parameters. In this paper, repeatable splicing between hollow-core photonic crystal fiber and single mode fiber with a loss of less than 2.3 dB, and a strength higher than 38 Kpsi is demonstrated.

Abstract:Theoretical and experimental investigations on the splicing loss mechanism of high nonlinearity photonic crystal fiber (PCF) and single mode fiber (SMF) at 1550 nm point out that mismatching of the mode field of these two kind fibers is the main cause of the splicing loss. And the air hole collapse due to long fusion time and large fusion current results in a large additional loss over 10 dB. An intermediate fiber is used to achieve the mode field matching. And optimized parameters are used to avoid air hole collapse during the arc fusion splice. The total splicing loss can be reduced to < 1 dB.

Abstract:We investigate the microhole collapse property of different photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) and its effect on the splice loss using an electric arc fusion splicer. The physical mechanism of the splice loss for different kinds of PCFs is studied, and a guideline for splicing these PCFs and conventional single-mode fibers (SMFs) is proposed. We demonstrate a low-loss fusion splicing of five different PCFs with SMFs, including large-mode PCF, hollow-core PCF, nonlinear PCFs, and polarization-maintaining PCF.

Abstract:The precise control of the thermal splicing temperature of ZBLAN fiber and silica fiber was guaranteed by theoretical simulation, analysis, and experimental optimization. The thermal splicing model was established, and optimized thermal splicing parameters were obtained based on the simulation results. The thermal splicing parameters were finely repeatedly tuned and optimized further in the thermal splicing experiments according to simulation parameters. The achieved loss was measured to be about 0.3 dB in the thermal splice experiments. The offset thermal splicing method demonstrated a repeatable, low-loss, and promising technique for the splice of ZBLAN fiber to silica fiber. Abstract:We have formed low-loss fusion splices from highly nonlinear (HNL) photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) with small cores and high air-filling fractions to fibers with much larger mode field diameters (MFDs). The PCF core was locally enlarged by the controlled collapse of holes around the core while keeping other holes open. The fiber was then cleaved at the enlarged core and spliced to the large MFD fiber with a conventional electric arc fusion splicer. Abstract:We report fusion splicing nonsilica soft glass microfibers by using single pulses from a CO(2) laser. Splice loss of a 2-mu m-diameter phosphate glass microfiber is around 0.2 dB. By fusion splicing phosphate glass microfibers into closed-loop rings, we demonstrate a microfiber resonator with a Q-factor of about 25 000 and a 1.5-mu m-wavelength microring laser with a linewidth of about 0.05 nm. Our results suggest a potential approach to fabricating robust and versatile photonic components or devices out of soft glass microfibers that are excellent hosts for a variety of functional dopants.

Abstract:We propose a novel porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) consisting of asymmetrical rectangular air holes in the core and six-ring hexagonal lattice circular air holes in the cladding for achieving low-loss polarization terahertz transmission in a wide frequency range. By assuming TOPAS as the host material, the finite element method (FEM) is used to investigate its properties. The near-zero flattened dispersion of −0.01±0.02 ps/THz/cm is achieved over a frequency range of 1.0–2.0 THz, as well as a high birefringence of 7.1 × 10<sup>−2</sup> which can be useful for polarization-maintaining applications. Also, critical parameters such as mode field distribution, effective material loss, confinement loss, and effective mode area are discussed in detail. Abstract:We develop an approach to tailoring the mode of a solid-core polarization-maintaining fiber, with both the reverse tapering process and the thermally expanded core technique, enlarging the mode area and reshaping the mode shape to construct a matched interface with an asymmetric antiresonant hollow-core fiber. An ultralow fusion splicing loss of 0.41 dB and a maintained polarization extinction ratio of 28 dB were demonstrated, with no additional intermediate component.

Abstract:The Fresnel reflection of a splice from the air–silica interface between a hollow-core fiber (HCF) and a solid-core conventional fiber will increase the splicing loss and also cause possible instability of transmission. Here, for the first time, we develop a novel approach to fusion splicing an antireflection-coated (AR-coated) conventional fiber and an antiresonant HCF, which was generally claimed to be impossible because of the heat-induced damage of the coating, and achieve state-of-the-art ultralow fusion splicing loss less than 0.3 dB and a low return loss less than −28 dB by optimizing the splicing procedures and parameters. Our new fusion splicing approach will benefit the wide application of HCFs in telecoms, laser technologies, gyroscopes, and fiber gas cells.

Abstract:We report a novel low-loss splicing approach for hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF) and conventional single mode fiber (SMF) by inserting an etched SMF tip into the hollow core. If the divergence solid angle (DSA) of the inserted fiber tip is smaller than the guiding solid angle (GSA) of HC-PCF, all the radiated optical power from the tip will be collected by PCF with an extremely high coupling efficiency and guided by the PCF based on photonic bandgap effect. A DSA-GSA matching model is proposed to calculate the efficiency for different splicing situations. In the optimal condition of GSA > DSA, the transmission loss could approach zero, only including the scattering loss of etched fiber. Then, we experimentally demonstrate the splicing between NKT HC19-1550-01 and SMF28 with coupling efficiency of 84.5%, agreeing well with the theoretical result of 85%. In addition, our proposed method is coaxiality error free, angle deviation free, and insertion length insensitive. This new technique is expected to provide new possibilities in some special system designs for HC-PCF-based applications.

Abstract:Negative curvature hollow-core fibers (NC-HCFs) can boost the excellent performance of HCFs in terms of propagation loss, nonlinearity, and latency, while retaining large core and delicate cladding structures, which makes them distinctly different from conventional fibers. Construction of low-loss all-fiber NC-HCF architecture with conventional single-mode fibers (SMFs) is important for various applications. Here we demonstrate an efficient and reliable fusion splicing method to achieve low-loss connection between a NC-HCF and a conventional SMF. By controlling the mode-field profile of the SMF with a two-step reverse-tapering method, we realize a record-low insertion loss of 0.88 dB for a SMF/NC-HCF/SMF chain at 1310 nm. Our method is simple, effective, and reliable, compared with those methods that rely on intermediate bridging elements, such as graded-index fibers, and can greatly facilitate the integration of NC-HCFs and promote more advanced applications with such fibers. Abstract:Multicore fibers (MCFs) offer a fascinating solution to the need to increase the fiber density and thus meet the exponentially growing demand for capacity in optical communication networks. Despite overwhelming research into MCFs, the desire for a general fusion splicing scheme between dissimilar MCFs remains unanswered. Here, we propose a tapering technique to reshape MCFs that includes both reverse-tapering and down-tapering schemes and can be exploited to tailor the core-to-core spacing and modify the modal property of MCFs. By matching both the spacing and the mode field diameter, we demonstrated a low-loss (0.18 +/- 0.10 dB) and low-crosstalk (-68 +/- 3 dB) fusion splice between two spacing-mismatched MCFs with a spacing difference of up to 26 mu m. The proposed novel schemes are also suitable for splicing between MCFs with slightly different spacings and can provide a unique perspective for fabricating MCF devices and boosting various MCF applications. Abstract:Silicon photonic devices are poised to enter high volume markets such as data-communications, telecommunications, biological sensing, and optical phased arrays; however, permanently attaching a fiber to the photonic chip with high optical efficiency remains a challenge. We present a robust and low-loss packaging technique of permanent optical edge coupling between a fiber and a chip using fusion splicing which is low-cost and scalable to high volume manufacturing. We fuse a SMF-28 cleaved fiber to the chip via CO$_2$ laser and reinforce it with optical adhesive. We demonstrate minimum loss of 1.0dB per-facet with 0.6dB penalty over 160nm bandwidth from 1480nm-1640nm.

Abstract:Based on low-loss fusion splicing of microfibers using a CO laser, we demonstrate free-standing microfiber closed-loop resonators. Loaded Q-factors of 110 500 with a finesse of 15.3 are obtained around 1.5-mu m wavelength in a 2.4-mm-diameter closed-loop resonator suspended in air. The possibility of tuning resonant responses by changing the coupling efficiency is also demonstrated.

Abstract:We demonstrate a low-loss, repeatable, and robust splice between single-mode silica fiber and single-mode chalcogenide (CHG) fiber. These splices are particularly difficult to create because of the significant difference in the two fibers' glass transition temperatures (∼1000°C) as well as the large difference in the coefficients of thermal expansion between the fibers (∼20×10(-6)/°C). With 90% light coupled through the silica-CHG fiber splice, predominantly in the fundamental circular-symmetric mode, into the core of the CHG fiber and with 0.5 dB of splice loss measured around the wavelength of 2.5 μm, after correcting only for the Fresnel loss, the silica-CHG splice offers excellent beam quality and coupling efficiency. The tensile strength of the splice is greater than 12 kpsi, and the laser damage threshold is greater than 2 W (CW) and was limited by the available laser pump power. We also utilized this splicing technique to demonstrate 2 to 4.5 μm ultrabroadband supercontinuum generation in a monolithic all-fiber system comprising a CHG fiber and a high peak power 2 μm pulsed Raman-shifted thulium fiber laser. This is a major development toward compact form factor commercial applications of soft-glass mid-IR fibers.
