Abstract:This paper proposes a high strength and low loss splicing method suitable for coupling between hollow-core photonic crystal fiber and single mode fiber, based on filament fusion technology. The essence of this method is keeping the temperature of the single mode fiber above the melting temperature, and that of the hollow-core photonic crystal fiber at around the softening point temperature by modifying several splice parameters, which can be pre-evaluated by numerical simulation. Experimental results have verified the accuracy of the numerical model, and ideal splicing results can be made under proper splice parameters. In this paper, repeatable splicing between hollow-core photonic crystal fiber and single mode fiber with a loss of less than 2.3 dB, and a strength higher than 38 Kpsi is demonstrated.

Abstract:We propose a novel porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) consisting of asymmetrical rectangular air holes in the core and six-ring hexagonal lattice circular air holes in the cladding for achieving low-loss polarization terahertz transmission in a wide frequency range. By assuming TOPAS as the host material, the finite element method (FEM) is used to investigate its properties. The near-zero flattened dispersion of −0.01±0.02 ps/THz/cm is achieved over a frequency range of 1.0–2.0 THz, as well as a high birefringence of 7.1 × 10<sup>−2</sup> which can be useful for polarization-maintaining applications. Also, critical parameters such as mode field distribution, effective material loss, confinement loss, and effective mode area are discussed in detail. Abstract:A method based on controlled air hole collapse for low-loss fusion splicing small-core photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) and single-mode fibers (SMFs) was demonstrated. A taper rig was used to control air hole collapse accurately to enlarge the MFDs of PCFs which was then spliced with SMFs using a fusion splicer. An optimum mode field match at the interface of PCF-SMF was achieved and a low-loss with 0.64dB was obtained from 3.57dB for a PCF with 4μm MFD and a SMF with 10.4μm MFD experimentally.

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel method for low-loss splicing photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) and double cladding fibers (DCFs) by controlled hole collapse and tapering using a conventional fusion splicer. Through controlled hole collapse, two center rings of holes were collapsed to expand the core of the PCF, while the cladding diameter of the PCF was almostly not changed. The mode field diameter (MFD) and inner cladding diameter of the DCFs were decreased by tapering. So an optimum mode field and cladding match at the interface of PCF-DCF and an adiabatic mode field variation in the longitudinal direction of the PCF and DCF can be achieved. This is the first time, to our knowledge, to realize low-loss splicing between the DCFs and PCFs. Splice losses as low as 0.65 dB were achieved between a PCF and a DCF with MFDs of 5.8 and 26.5 μm, and with the inner cladding diameters of 125 and 250 μm, respectively.

Abstract:We investigate the microhole collapse property of different photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) and its effect on the splice loss using an electric arc fusion splicer. The physical mechanism of the splice loss for different kinds of PCFs is studied, and a guideline for splicing these PCFs and conventional single-mode fibers (SMFs) is proposed. We demonstrate a low-loss fusion splicing of five different PCFs with SMFs, including large-mode PCF, hollow-core PCF, nonlinear PCFs, and polarization-maintaining PCF.

Abstract:We have formed low-loss fusion splices from highly nonlinear (HNL) photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) with small cores and high air-filling fractions to fibers with much larger mode field diameters (MFDs). The PCF core was locally enlarged by the controlled collapse of holes around the core while keeping other holes open. The fiber was then cleaved at the enlarged core and spliced to the large MFD fiber with a conventional electric arc fusion splicer. Splice losses as low as 0.36 dB were achieved between a PCF and a standard single-mode fiber (SMF) with MFDs of 1.8 mu m and 5.9 mu m, respectively. (c) 2009 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We report a novel low-loss splicing approach for hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF) and conventional single mode fiber (SMF) by inserting an etched SMF tip into the hollow core. If the divergence solid angle (DSA) of the inserted fiber tip is smaller than the guiding solid angle (GSA) of HC-PCF, all the radiated optical power from the tip will be collected by PCF with an extremely high coupling efficiency and guided by the PCF based on photonic bandgap effect. A DSA-GSA matching model is proposed to calculate the efficiency for different splicing situations. In the optimal condition of GSA > DSA, the transmission loss could approach zero, only including the scattering loss of etched fiber. Then, we experimentally demonstrate the splicing between NKT HC19-1550-01 and SMF28 with coupling efficiency of 84.5%, agreeing well with the theoretical result of 85%. In addition, our proposed method is coaxiality error free, angle deviation free, and insertion length insensitive. This new technique is expected to provide new possibilities in some special system designs for HC-PCF-based applications.

Abstract:Efficient coupling of light to single subwavelength structures is an important theme of many optical researches [1]. The extent to which a nanoscale object and the mode of an optical cavity are strongly coupled is determined by both cavity finesse and mode volume. In this context, a silica fiber tapered down to a few microns or smaller and then sandwiched between two integrated mirrors exhibits attractive features [2]. As a guided mode cavity, such a fiber taper device has merits of allowing strong evanescent field to spread out, thus efficient light-matter interactions, much lower coupling loss to external optical networks, and truly positionable configuration. In order to shorten the effective cavity length to the level of wavelength scale, we explore fiber taper structures with photonic-crystal (PhC) mirrors [3] fabricated by ion beam milling arrays of through holes along microfiber.

Abstract:In order to realize low loss fusion splicing between photonic crystal fiber(PCFs)and conventional fibers,after optimizing the splicer parameters and gradually decreasing the air hole collapse of PCFs,the main source of fusion splicing loss between PCFs and conventional fibers and rules of choosing parameters of arc fusion splicer were discussed in detail.Then some experiments splicing PCFs and conventional fibers were carried out with matched and mismatched mode field diameters,and very low loss(less than 0.2dB and 0.3dB respectively)was obtained.In conclusion,low loss splicing can be achieved by optimizing the splicer parameters for matched mode field diameters,however for much mismatched mode field diameters,low splicing loss can be obtained through controlling air hole collapse of PCFs.

Abstract:We demonstrated a novel method of low-loss splicing photonic crystal fiber (PCF) and single-mode fiber (SMF) by conventional electric arc fusion splicer, in which the air with proper pressure is injecting into the PCFs holes to control the collapse ratio and then an optimum mode field match at the joint of SMF/PCF is realized. The experimental results show that the splice loss at 1550nm is similar to 0.40 dB and similar to 1.05dB for solid-core PCF/SMF and hollow-core PCF/SMF, respectively. This method could be widely used to fabricate PCF Devices.

Abstract:A novel strategy to design a highly birefringent and low loss oligoporous-core THz photonic crystal fiber (PCF) by introducing a single circular air-hole unit into the core area has been revealed. The circular air-hole units can be diversely designed as dual-hole, triple-hole, or other simple anisotropic structures. The characteristics, including birefringence, effective material loss, power fraction, confinement loss, and dispersion, are numerically analyzed in detail based on the full-vector finite element method (FEM). Simulation results show that birefringence up to the order of 3 × 10-2 and low effective material loss down to 20-40% of its bulk material loss could be achieved in a wide frequency range. The newly proposed THz PCF facilitates the fabrication process due to their simple structures with all circular air-holes and may find wide applications in sensing or polarization maintaining transmission systems.

Abstract:Theoretical and experimental investigations on the splicing loss mechanism of high nonlinearity photonic crystal fiber (PCF) and single mode fiber (SMF) at 1550 nm point out that mismatching of the mode field of these two kind fibers is the main cause of the splicing loss. And the air hole collapse due to long fusion time and large fusion current results in a large additional loss over 10 dB. An intermediate fiber is used to achieve the mode field matching. And optimized parameters are used to avoid air hole collapse during the arc fusion splice. The total splicing loss can be reduced to < 1 dB.

Abstract:We demonstrate low-loss splicing between a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) and a single-mode fiber (SMF) with a conventional electric-arc fusion splicer, where nitrogen gas (N-2) with a proper pressure is pumped into the air holes of the PCF to control the air-hole collapse ratio so as to optimize the mode-field match at the joint. The method is applicable to both solid-core and hollow-core PCFs. With this method, we achieve a splice loss (measured at 1550 nm) of similar to 0.40 dB for a solid-core PCF and similar to 1.05 dB for a hollow-core PCF. Abstract:In this paper we propose a novel type of highly-birefringent and ultra-wideband low-loss photonic crystal fiber (PCF) incorporating elliptical holes in the cladding and rhombic holes located along the transversal axes. The PCF is simulated and analyzed with finite-difference time-domain method. The properties of PCFs were investigated for various distribution, shape and size of air holes. For the optimized PCF design the birefringence reaches 8×10−3 at 1550 nm and the confinement loss is as low as 5×10−4dB/km with single mode operation in an ultra-broad transmission band (500 nm–1800 nm). Furthermore, the single mode and single polarization transmission could be achieved in this PCF at longer wavelengths beyond 1600 nm. This kind of PCF has potentials in optical long haul communication and optical fiber sensing.

Abstract:Photonic crystal fibers(PCF) tapering is one of the most important technologies to exploit the potential application value of PCFs.By optimizing the conventional tapering machine parameters,PCFs can be tapered using the "fast and cold" tapering method while preventing the hole collapse.Tapering of couple different PCFs were presented in the experiment,and the outer diameter of the PCFs were from 125 μm to 50 μm and 30 μm,respectively.The d/Λ of tapered PCFs was almost the same with the initial PCF and loss was less than 0.4 dB.Low loss tapering PCFs based on the conventional tapering machine lays a foundation for the manufacture of PCF devices.

Abstract:We present a modified method to design photonic crystal fibers with flattened dispersion characteristics. By replacing the circular air-holes of the first central ring with elliptic air-holes, we observe a more flattened dispersion curve. Plane-wave expansion (PWE) method is used to analyze the dispersion property in a high-index core PCF. The simulation results are presented, and ultra-low and ultra-flattened dispersion curves over wide wavelength range are demonstrated.

Abstract:Through introducing three sizes of holes in cladding, highly birefringent two-mode photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) are proposed. The full-vector finite-element method (FEM) is applied in the calculation of the transverse electric field vector distributions of the two modes, their effective indices, modal birefringence, chromatic dispersion, and confinement losses. The defect holes near the core region are deliberately designed to obtain high birefringence. Furthermore, the structural parameters are carefully selected to flatten chromatic dispersion curve and reduce confinement losses.

Abstract:Due to their flexible structure and excellent optical characteristics hollow-core photonic crystal fibers (HC-PCFs) are used in many fields, such as active optical devices, communications, and optical fiber sensing. In this paper, to analyze the characteristics of HC-PCFs, we carried out finite element analysis and analyzed the design for the band gap cladding structure of HC-PCFs. First, the characteristics of HC19-1550 and HC-1550-02 in the C-band were simulated. Subsequently, the structural optimization of the seven-cell HC-1550-02 and variations in characteristics of the optimized HC-1550-02 in the wavelength range 1250–1850 nm were investigated. The simulation results revealed that the optimal number of cladding layers is eight, the optimal core radius is 1.8 times the spacing of adjacent air holes, and the optimal-relative thickness of the core quartz-ring is 2.0. In addition, the low confinement loss bandwidth of the optimized structure is 225 nm. Under the transmission bandwidth of the optimized structure, the core optical power is above 98%, the confinement loss is below 9.0 × 10−3 dB/m, the variation range of the effective mode field area does not exceed 10 μm2, and the relative sensitivity is above 0.9570. The designed sensor exhibits an ultra-high relative sensitivity and almost zero confinement loss, making it highly suitable for high-sensitivity gas or liquid sensing.

Abstract:We propose a novel polarization-maintaining index-guiding photonic crystal fiber (PCF). It is composed of a solid silica core and a cladding with squeezed-hexagonal-lattice elliptical air holes. Using a full-vector finite-element method, we study the modal birefringence of the fundamental modes in such PCFs. Numerical result shows that very high modal birefringence with a magnitude of the order of 10(-2) around 1550 nm has been obtained. Furthermore, large normal dispersion appears over a wide range of wavelengths in both orthogonal polarizations. (c) 2007 Optical Society of America.
