Abstract:Experimental investigation was performed with a 1064-nm, 10-ns Nd:YAG laser to determine the effects of the surface hydrogen acid etching on laser damage, compared with damage of conventionally polished surface. The investigation was helpful for us to understand the negative effects of Nd-doped phosphate glass surface and subsurface damage (SSD) on laser induced damage threshold (LIDT). A set of samples was polished, and then chemically etched in a cool buffered 10%HF + 20%H2SO4 solution at different times. Another set of samples was ground and etched in the hot-buffered solution, and then polished. All the samples were irradiated with Nd: YAG laser and characterized by optical microscopy. Results of LIDT were obtained according to International standard ISO/DIS 11254-1.2. Chemical treatment can remove the contaminants in the polished re-deposition layer and the SSD for improving the laser damage resistance of Nd-doped phosphate glass surfaces. The method of using hot solution was more effective than that of using cool solution.

Abstract:Nd-doped phosphate glass is the dominant amplifier material used in solid state high average power laser systems. Surface imperfection and subsurface damage (SSD) of the glass, resulting from the optical fabrication process, limit the increment of laser system energy output. Thus, it is important to enhance the surface damage threshold of Nd-doped phosphate glass surface. The influence of abrasive size, polishing powder, grinding mode, and chemical treatment on the laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) of Nd-doped phosphate glass surface is investigated. Results show that the LIDT is affected little by different polishing powders and grinding modes. The LIDT correlates with the abrasive size, which produced different depths of SSD. A suitable acid etching treatment can remove the imperfection and the SSD for improving the LIDT of Nd-doped phosphate glass surface. The combination of several effective techniques and methods, which are low-cost and practical, should be useful to enhance the LIDT of Nd-doped phosphate glass surface.

Abstract:Using laser neodymium glass (N31) as the substrate, through ion exchange and hydrogen reduction process, a high-efficiency light absorption layer was formed from the substrate around the glass. It has been discovered that increasing the ion exchange temperature and time enhanced the exchange depth of laser glass, but excessive temperature and prolonged time will lead to corrosion of laser glass. The experiment shows that the best exchange temperature is 460°C and the best exchange time is 720min. When the hydrogen pressure was 0.8MP, the reduction temperature was 480°C and the reduction time was 12000 min, the absorption rate of the sample at 1053nm was 95.8%.

Optical and Thermal Properties of A New Nd-Doped Phosphate Laser Glass

Abstract:In this paper, we report the optical and thermal properties of a new Nd-doped phosphate laser glass. Glass samples with 0.5-3.7 wt% Nd-doping concentrations were prepared, annealed, cut and polished for different measurements, including glass density and refractive index, absorption spectra and emission cross section, as well as laser properties. A Mach-Zehnder interferometer was used to measure the temperature coefficient of refractive index (dn/dT) and optical path length (dS/dT) in the temperature range of 30-100 degrees C. Moreover, by increasing the glass temperature up to 500 degrees C, the thermal expansion of this new glass was also measured. On the basis of these optical, thermal and thermo-optic parameters, we calculated and analyzed some of glass parameters, such as the electronic polarizability of oxygen ions, the optical basicity of this phosphate-based glass, and especially discussed their thermal shock resistance properties. It is suggested that this new Nd-doped phosphate laser glass is an excellent candidate for high energy and high repetition rate laser applications.

Abstract:In this paper, the surface corrosion mechanisms of Chinese high-peak-power laser glass, the N31 glass, are investigated. Powder samples were immersed in deionized water for up to 72 days. The concentrations of ions in leachate solutions were measured by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, and the surface evolution during corrosion was characterized by X-ray photoelectron and attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopies. The N31 glass leaches incongruently, and the normalized ionic release rate decreases with an increase of cation field strength. Depending on the oxygen-to-phosphorus molar ratio (O/P ratio) evolution on the glass surface, the surface corrosion process presents two stages, which can be indirectly supported by the attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy results. This study reveals composition and structure evolutions on the glass surface during water corrosion. In addition, our results suggest that the 0/P ratio on glass surface could be used to characterize the surface corrosion degree and mechanisms.

Abstract:Nd3+-doped phosphate laser glasses have been attracting much attention and widespread investigation due to their high solubility of rare earth (RE) ions, excellent spectroscopic properties, and large damage threshold. However, the narrow NIR emission bandwidth (less than 30 nm) of these Nd3+-doped phosphate glasses limits their further application toward ultrahigh power field and efficient fiber laser in new region. Here, we demonstrate the broadening and enhancing of Nd3+ NIR emission in laser glass of zinc aluminophosphate through tuning the glass structure and covalency of Nd-O bond without limiting the radiative properties of Nd3+. The maximum bandwidth of 1.05 m emission is broadened to 50 nm, which is comparable to that of Nd3+-doped aluminate laser glasses. Simultaneously, the lifetime of F-4(3/2) level is elongated nearly by two times. Structural and optical properties of prepared glasses were discussed systematically to reveal the mechanism. Detailed analysis on optical spectra and glass structure indicates that the bandwidth is affected by not only the covalency of Nd-O but also the compactness of glass structure. Our results could enrich our understanding about the relationship between local glass structure and luminescence behaviors of active centers, and may be helpful in designing new RE-doped laser glass systems.

Laser-induced fluorescence and its effect on the damage resistance of fluoride-containing phosphate-based glasses

Abstract:A series of multi-component fluoride-containing phosphate-based glasses prepared in a reducing atmosphere showed improved resistance to high-energy ultraviolet (UV) laser-induced damage and strong laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) within the glass bulk. The UV optical absorption, photoluminescence, and fluorescence decay properties of these glasses were investigated to explore the defect-related LIF mechanism and its underlying effect on the glasses' laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT). Seven laser wavelengths ranging from 253 nm to 532 nm were used to excite the LIF, and two characteristic fluorescence bands peaking at approximately 414 nm and 780–800 nm occurred in all three types of glasses. The LIF band at 414 nm was attributed to PO3-EC defects in the second harmonic frequency (2ω) absorptive glass and third harmonic frequency (3ω) transparent glass, but Fe2+ ions in the fundamental frequency (1ω) absorptive glass. A later fluorescence band at 780–800 nm occurred due to POHC defects in the 2ω absorptive and 3ω transparent glasses and Fe3+ ions in the 1ω absorptive glass. A detailed study on the dynamic decay processes of two additional dominant fluorescence peaks at 450 nm and 780 nm under 266 nm excitation revealed the potential effect of LIF on LIDT improvement. The relatively longer LIF lifetime, higher LIF intensity, and larger LIF peak area corresponded with and contributed to a higher LIDT, especially in the 3ω transparent glass with a low UV absorption coefficient. This study provides strong evidence for the prior hypothesis between strong LIF and LIDT.

Abstract:Large aperture Nd:glass disk is often used as the amplifier medium in the inertial confinement fusion (ICF) facilities. The typical size of Nd:glass is up to 810mm x 460mm x 40mm and more than 3,000 Nd:glass components are needed in the ICF facility. At present, the 3 omega) fused silica glass and DKDP crystal are mainly responsible for the damage of driver used for ICF. However, with the enlargement of the facility and increase of laser shot number, the laser damage of Nd:glass at 1 omega waveband is still an important problem to limit the stable operation of facility and improvement of laser beam quality. In this work, the influence of Nd:glass material itself, mechanical processing, service environment, and laser beam quality on its damage behavior is investigated experimentally and theoretically. The results and conclusions can be summarized as follows: (1) It is very important to control the concentration of platinum impurity particles during melting and the sputtering effect of the cladding materials. (2) The number and length of fractural and brittle scratches should be strictly suppressed during mechanical processing of Nd:glass. (3) The B-integral of high power laser beam should be rigorously controlled. Particularly, the top shape of pulses must be well controlled when operating at high peak laser power. (4) The service environment should be well managed to make sure the cleanness of the surface of Nd:glass better than 100/A level during mounting and running (5) The service environment and beam quality should be monitored during operation.

Abstract:Neodymium phosphate laser glass is a key optical element for high-power laser facility. In this work, the latest research and development of neodymium phosphate laser glass at the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (SIOM), China, is addressed. Neodymium phosphate laser glasses, N31, N41, NAP2, and NAP4, for high peak power and high average power applications have been developed. The properties of these glasses are presented and compared to those of other commercial neodymium phosphate laser glass from the Schott and Hoya companies and the Vavilov State Optical Institute (GOI), Russia. Continuous melting and edge cladding are the two key fabrication techniques that are used for the mass production of neodymium phosphate laser glass slabs. These techniques for the fabrication of large-aperture N31 neodymium phosphate laser glass slabs with low stress birefringence and residual reflectivity have been developed by us The effect of acid etching on the microstructure, optical transmission, and mechanical properties of NAP2 glass is also discussed.
Effect of Zirconium Content on Defect Structure and Light Damage Resistance of Zr:Dy:LiNbO3 Crystals

Abstract:In this paper, the defective structure of Zr:Dy:LiNbO3 crystals and their resistance to photodamage under different Zr4+ concentration doping are studied. The properties of Zr:Dy:LiNbO3 crystals are studied and analyzed by infrared (IR) absorption spectroscopy, ultraviolet‐visible near‐infrared (UV–vis–NIR) absorption spectroscopy, Judd–Ofelt theory and light scattering exposure energy flow threshold method. In this paper, Zr:Dy:LiNbO3 crystals are prepared by traditional pull‐up method, in which Zr4+ doping concentrations are 0, 1, 2, and 4 mol%, respectively. In this paper, the defective structure of Zr:Dy:LiNbO3 crystals and their resistance to photodamage under different Zr4+ concentration doping are studied. Firstly, the influence of Zr4+ doping concentration on the defective structure of Zr:Dy:LiNbO3 crystal and the occupancy of doped ions under different Zr4+ concentrations are tested and discussed by infrared (IR) absorption spectroscopy and ultraviolet‐visible near‐infrared (UV–vis–NIR) absorption spectroscopy. The Judd–Ofelt theoretical analysis results show that when the concentration of doped Zr4+ is 2 mol%, the spectral quality factor (X) of Dy3+ in lithium niobate crystals is significantly improved compared with that of Dy3+ in other crystals. Secondly, resistance to photodamage of Zr:Dy:LiNbO3 crystals is studied and analyzed by the light scattering exposure energy flow threshold method. The results show that when the concentration of doped Zr4+ ions reaches 4 mol%, the exposure energy value is increased by 210 times compared with the no doping, which greatly improves the anti‐photodamage performance of the crystal.

Abstract:We simulate and calculate numerically the electromagnetic field and energy flux around a surface crack of an Nd-doped phosphate laser glass by using the finite-difference time-domain method. Because of a strong interference between the incident wave and the total internal reflections from the crack and the glass surface, the electric field is redistributed and enhanced. The results show that the electric-field distribution and corresponding energy flux component depend sensitively on the light polarization and crack geometry, such as orientation and depth. The polarization of the incident laser beam relative to the crack surfaces will determine the profile of the electric field around the crack. Under TE wave incidence, the energy flux peak is always inside the glass. But under TM wave incidence, the energy flux peak will be located inside the glass or inside the air gap. For both incident modes, the light intensification factor increases with the crack depth, especially for energy flux along the surface. Because cracks on the polished surfaces are the same as the roots extending down, the probability for much larger intensification occurring is high. The results suggest that the surface laser-damage threshold of Nd-doped phosphate may decrease dramatically with subsurface damage.

Abstract:The enhancement of laser damage resistance of fused silica optics was a hotspot in scientific research. At present, a variety of modern processes have been produced to improve the laser induced damage threshold (LIDT) of fused silica optics. They included pre-treatment processes represented by flexible computer controlled optical surfacing (CCOS), magnetorheological finishing (MRF), ion beam finishing (IBF), and post-treatment processes represented by dynamic chemical etching (DCE). These have achieved remarkable results. However, there are still some problems that need to be solved urgently, such as excessive material removal, surface accuracy fluctuation in the DCE process, and the pollution in MRF process, etc. In view of above problems, an MRF, CCOS, IBF and shallow DCE combined technique was used to process fused silica optics. The surface morphology could be greatly controlled and chemical etching depth was reduced, while the LIDT increased steadily. After processing by this combined technique, the LIDT increased to 12.1 J/cm2 and the laser damage resistance properties of fused silica were significantly enhanced. In general, the MRF, IBF, CCOS and shallow DCE combined technique brought much help to the enhancement of laser damage resistance of fused silica, and could be used as a process route in the manufacturing process of fused silica.

Abstract:In this work, a new polishing method of Nd 3+ ions activated laser glass (Nd-glass) have been proposed, which is ion beam figuring (IBF). This study investigates the removal mechanism of IBF by analyzing the surface material composition of Nd (neodymium) glass for the first time. The correlation between surface roughness and the surface elemental content of Nd-glass is proposed. Various characterization techniques such as SEM, EDS, XPS, Raman, XRD, and AFM were employed to validate the removal mechanism of IBF. Ultimately, after six iterations of IBF at 600 V voltage, N31 and N41 Nd-glass achieved a PV range of 0.01–0.02 λ and an RMS value of approximately 0.5 nm, demonstrating the successful attainment of high-quality surface processing for Nd-glass, which ensures that IBF does not increase the surface roughness when used for precision shaping of Nd-glass.

Abstract:Thermal properties of a new Nd-doped phosphate glass were investigated. The thermal expansion coefficient was measured by a dilatometric technique. A Mach–Zehnder interferometer was used to measure the temperature coefficient of refractive index (dn/dT) and the thermo-optic coefficient (ds/dT) in the temperature range of 30–100°C. A low thermal expansion coefficient was observed for the new phosphate glass. The dispersion of the thermo-optic parameters was calculated from an empirical equation. The thermo-optic coefficient (ds/dT) at the working wavelength of 1053nm is lower than those of other high average power glasses. These results indicate that the new Nd-doped phosphate glass is a good candidate for high average power laser applications.

Abstract:Acid etching experiment was carried out for phosphate laser glass with different content of Li2O.The effect of acid etching on properties of laser glass without ion-exchange was investigated.The weight loss rate of glass etched in different concentration of H2SO4 solution and the effect of acid etching on glass surface morphology were examined.The impurities and scratch marks could be eliminated after short time of acid etching.In addition,a short time of acid etching could reduce some microcracks on glass surface.Acid etching can also enhance glass fracture temperature and hardness.However,the modification of fracture temperature was limited.The glass absorption spectrum showed that acid etching exhibited no obvious effect on the pattern and peak value of absorption spectrum.Short time of acid etching improved the intensity of glass fluorescence spectrum.

The samples were irradiated with gamma-rays up to 20 kGy. Optical absorption spectra and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) were employed to investigate the radiation-induced-defects. We found that the radiation induced attenuation (RIA) decrease with increasing Nb5+ and Sb3+ doping concentration. Only the phosphorus oxygen hole center (POHC) related EPR signals were observed in the Nb5+-doped samples. Both POHC and phosphorus-oxygen electron centers (POEC) related EPR signals decrease obviously with 1 mol % Sb2O3 doping concentration. These experimental results were interpreted by a model that is based on competition between various defects and Nb- or Sb-ions for the holes and electrons generated by the absorption of gamma-rays.
