Abstract:A combination of XRD, solid-state NMR and state-of-the-art imaging techniques were used to investigate how the calcium orthophosphate/calcium silicate ratio affects the crystallisation of bioactive glasses in the system SiO2-P2O5-CaO-CaF2. In the phosphate-free glass, xonotlite, wollastonite and cuspidine crystallised. From 2.4 mol% P2O5, fluorapatite also formed, while the amount of wollastonite decreased. Crystallisation tendency was low for low phosphate contents, while above 3 mol% P2O5 it increased. The phosphate-free glass showed a volume crystallisation mechanism with constant activation energy. By contrast, the glass with the largest phosphate to silicate ratio showed both volume and surface crystallisation, causing a pronounced decrease in activation energy with crystallisation degree. This work shows that by changing the phosphate/silicate ratio we can determine which crystal phases form, obtaining for example fluorapatite-free or wollastonite-free glass-ceramics, depending on the desired application and properties such as mechanical strength or activity in contact with physiological solutions.
PROPERTIES AND CRYSTALLIZATON KINETICS OF AlF3-BASED FLUOPHOSPHATE GLASSES

Abstract:In order to improve the ability of glasses against devitrification, Ba(PO_3)_2 was introduced to fluoroaluminate basic glass, which consisting of 10MgF_2·20CaF_2·BaF_2·10SrF_2·15YF_3·35AlF_3, to substitute BaF_2 in the glass. The influences of Ba(PO_3)_2 contents on the properties and crystallization kinetics of glasses were studied by differential thermal analysis technique. The experiment results indicate that more Ba(PO_3)_2 content will increase the T_g and T_x of glasses, reduce melting temperature of glasses and improve also the ability of glass forming. A 8 mm thick glass plate can be obtained with the glass substituted by 2% (in mole, same below) Ba(PO_3)_2. In addition, the transmitting spectrum of glass containing 2% Ba(PO_3)_2 was measured, the infrared transmitting region reaches to 4 μm. This glass is stable, and has a wide infrared transparent region, therefore it is a potential optical glass material.

Abstract:In order to achieve well-performing chemical strengthening behavior, the composition of 86.12(xSiO(2)-yAl(2)O(3)-zP(2)O(5))- 9.95Na(2)O- 1.27ZnO- 2.66Li(2)O (x = 55-85wt%, y = 10-40wt% and z = 5-35wt%) were prepared by conventional melt-quenching technique. The glass forming region was obtained. Two compositional series of 65SiO(2)-yAl(2)O(3)-zP(2)O(5) (15 <= y <= 30, 5 <= z <= 30, 5 <= z <= 20) (Series I) and xSiO(2)-20%Al2O3-zP(2)O(5) (60 <= x <= 75, 5 <= z <= 20) (Series II) have been investigated. The relationship between glass structure and composition was investigated. The results show that the transparent and homogeneous glass is formed when the glass former P2O5 is lower than or equal to 15 wt% roughly. The P2O5 substitution for Al2O3 accelerates the depolymerization of aluminosilicate network. Phosphorus acts as network formers in the form of P-1 and P-2 units. In the case of the P2O5 substitution for SiO2, the roles of phosphorus in the glass network include P-0, P-1, P-2 and P-3 units. Furthermore, the Series I and Series II glass samples were chemical strengthened. The ion-exchange depth and the elastic modulus before and after chemical strengthening were studied. The results reveal that the ion exchange depth and elasticity modulus after chemical strengthening is maximum at 64 mu m and 80.5 GPa for x/z = 5.4 sample, respectively. The addition of phosphorus accelerates ion exchange, which is mainly attributed to the formation of ion channels. The number of P-n and the coordination number of phosphorus are the main factors effecting the ion channels.

Abstract:New phosphate glass formulations based on Moroccan natural phosphate minerals alone or with Moroccan red clay additive (containing the P2O5-SiO2-CaO-Al2O3-MgO-Fe2O3-K2O-Na2O-TiO2 complex) have been successfully prepared by the quenching method. The chemical composition of each of the elaborated phosphate glasses was determined by X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF). These investigated phosphate glasses have an excellent homogeneity as was verified by SEM. Their amorphous behavior was confirmed by XRD and DSC. The increase in density and glass transition temperature due to the addition of clay is believed to be related to the crosslinking of the phosphate chains. Structural investigation of these phosphate glasses was carried out using FTIR and Raman spectroscopies. The results obtained show that the composition of these glasses contains a mixture of ultraphosphate and polyphosphate structural units. The concentrations of this mixture depending on the initial composition of the glass components. A correlation between the chemical composition and the chemical durability of the investigated glasses was studied. The results showed that the dissolution rate of the glasses decreases by increasing the clay composition up to a point. This can be explained by assuming the formation of oxygen bridges and strong bonds within the various glasses.
Laser-induced fluorescence and its effect on the damage resistance of fluoride-containing phosphate-based glasses

Abstract:A series of multi-component fluoride-containing phosphate-based glasses prepared in a reducing atmosphere showed improved resistance to high-energy ultraviolet (UV) laser-induced damage and strong laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) within the glass bulk. The UV optical absorption, photoluminescence, and fluorescence decay properties of these glasses were investigated to explore the defect-related LIF mechanism and its underlying effect on the glasses' laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT). Seven laser wavelengths ranging from 253 nm to 532 nm were used to excite the LIF, and two characteristic fluorescence bands peaking at approximately 414 nm and 780–800 nm occurred in all three types of glasses. The LIF band at 414 nm was attributed to PO3-EC defects in the second harmonic frequency (2ω) absorptive glass and third harmonic frequency (3ω) transparent glass, but Fe2+ ions in the fundamental frequency (1ω) absorptive glass. A later fluorescence band at 780–800 nm occurred due to POHC defects in the 2ω absorptive and 3ω transparent glasses and Fe3+ ions in the 1ω absorptive glass. A detailed study on the dynamic decay processes of two additional dominant fluorescence peaks at 450 nm and 780 nm under 266 nm excitation revealed the potential effect of LIF on LIDT improvement. The relatively longer LIF lifetime, higher LIF intensity, and larger LIF peak area corresponded with and contributed to a higher LIDT, especially in the 3ω transparent glass with a low UV absorption coefficient. This study provides strong evidence for the prior hypothesis between strong LIF and LIDT.

Abstract:The effects of introducing some amount of KNO3 into the raw materials on preparation of fluorophosphate glass are investigated in terms of UV–vis transmittance, absorption coefficient and change of refractive index. As the content of KNO3 reaches 50%, the UV absorption coefficient of the optimized fluorophosphate glass reaches the minimum due to absence of microcrystals in the produced glass. The Schott's Sellmeier dispersion formula and Ghosh's two-polar wavelength-dependent Sellmeier equation were both used to calculate dispersion constants of the optimized fluorophosphate glass. The optimized fluorophosphate glass maintains special characteristics of negative temperature coefficient of refractive index and near-zero thermo-optical coefficient. The lower absorption both in UV and near-infrared (NIR) helps to improve its laser-induced damage resistance. The athermal fluorophosphate glass shows great potential for compensation of thermal-induced distortion in high-power solid-state lasers and high-resolution optical systems.

Abstract:Na_2O-CaO-SiO_2 opaque glass containing fluoride and phosphate as opacifer was prepared by melting method and the effect of the composite opacifers on the transmission,crystalline phases,glass characteristics and mechanical properties of Na_2O-CaO-SiO_2 glass were studied by using UV-Vis,DTA,XRD and SEM technologies.The results show that with the addition of fluoride and phosphate,Na_2O-CaO-SiO_2 glass crystallizes irregular grain to opalize glass.The opaque glass containing fluoride and phosphide appears opaline,and possesses preferable mechanical properties,high glass transition temperature,and softening temperature.
Properties and structure of sodium-iron phosphate glasses

Abstract:Selected properties of phosphate glasses, containing from 14 to 43 mol% Fe2O3 and up to 13 mol% Na2O, have been measured. With increasing Fe2O3 and Na2O content, the density and dilatometric softening temperature increased, whereas, the thermal expansion coefficient and dissolution rate in water or saline at 90°C decreased. Glasses containing more than 25 mol% Fe2O3 had an exceedingly good chemical durability. Their dissolution rate at 90°C in distilled water or in saline solution was up to 100 times lower than that of window glass. Mössbauer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicate that iron(II) and iron(III) were both present in the glasses and the chemical durability improved with increasing iron(III) concentration. The outstanding chemical durability of these glasses was attributed to the replacement of POP bonds by more chemically resistant POFe(II) and POFe(III) bonds.

Abstract:Two types of fluoride-containing phosphate-based glasses were prepared under the reducing and ambient air atmosphere, respectively. And the interrelation between the micro-defects and luminescence for these glasses was investigated by studying their absorption, photoluminescence emission (PL) and excitation (PLE) spectra as well as electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra. The emission spectra under the excitation at 351nm and the excitation spectra by monitoring the emission wavelength at 433nm, 454nm, 505nm, 645nm and 780nm, together with the absorption spectra of these two types of glasses were investigated through Gaussian peak fitting method. Their photoluminescence spectra exhibit a general character with a broadband emission at around 430nm and a minor band at around 645nm. The photoluminescence excitation spectra and absorption spectra indicate that the Gaussian peak fitting of the emission spectra with the maximum at about 433, 455, 505 and 645nm, respectively, are closely associated with phosphate-related oxygen hole center defects and fluorine-related color centers. In addition, the emission and excitation spectra of the glass samples after the thermal treatment process in hydrogen atmosphere manifest that the reducing conditions promote the formation of phosphate-related oxygen hole center defects, oxygen related hole center defects and fluorine-related non-paramagnetic color centers as well as PO43− defects, while decrease the concentration level of Fe3+ and PO32− defects. The investigations on the glasses' photoluminescence properties and their changes with the glass melting and thermal treatment atmosphere will promote the further development in preparation technology of the fluoride-containing phosphate-based glasses.
Effect of Fluoride on the Reactive Crystallization of Fluoramphibole Glass-Ceramics

Abstract:Fluoramphibole glass-ceramics were prepared by reactive crystallization sintering the powder mixtures of crystallization promoters (fluormica) and waste glass with added LiF, NaF, MgF2, CaF2, BaF2. The phase composition, microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated by XRD, SEM, hardness tests, etc. The results show that the excellent bonding between the fluoramphibole crystal and the glass matrix is obtained when CaF2 is added, and it can improve the hardness of fluoramphibole glass-ceramics. The mechanical properties of fluoramphibole glass-ceramics with single addition of fluoride are better than that of combined addition.

Abstract:A systematic investigation on glass formation in the PbF2-InF3-BaHPO4 ternary system has been carried out. These glasses have characterized by IR spectra, Raman spectra and differential thermal analysis. The results show that the structure of these glasses is mainly affected by BaHPO4 and InF3 contents. With decreasing BaHPO4 content, the glass structure gradually transforms from metaphosphate to polyphosphate. When InF3 content is low, it mainly acts as network modifier, when its content is high; it enters glass matrix and forms In(O,F)(6) groups connecting the polymerized phosphorus oxygen species. PbF2 mainly acts as network modifier in this system. Systematic variations of the glass transition temperature and the thermal stability index agree well with these results. The most stable glass with Delta T = 230 degrees C and S = 21.79 K is obtained. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Study on the Optical Properties of Fluorophosphate Glass

Abstract:The ultraviolet and infrared optical properties of glasses were studied when BaF2 was substituted by Ba(PO3)2 in fluoroaluminate glass by ultraviolet and infrared spectroscopy methods.Research indicates that,the introduction of Ba(PO3)2 can reduce the scattering and the absorption of crystal defects in glass,and causes a migration of ultraviolet absorption edge to short wavelength.However,due to the intrinsic absorption,the ultraviolet absorption edge moves to long wavelength again with the increase of Ba(PO3)2 content,and the glass with 1% mole Ba(PO3)2 content has the shortest ultraviolet cut-off wavelength.The phosphorus-oxygen bond(P-O) vibration produces a strong absorption peak at about 4700 nm,and the vibration of P-O-H bond results in the absorption peak of 5850 nm,that cause the shift of infrared absorption edge to short wavelength direction.Influenced by hydrogen bonds,the absorption peak of hydroxyl group shifts to longer wavelength,and obviously broadened,reducing the transmission of glass in 3000~4000 nm scope.

Abstract:(80-x)P2O5-xBi2O3–20CaO (x = 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25mol%) and 60P2O5-(40-y)Bi2O3-yCaO (y = 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 mol%) lead-free glasses were prepared by traditional high temperature melting method. The formation region of P2O5–Bi2O3–CaO glass system is determined. The X-Ray diffraction verified the amorphous of the glass samples in a certain composition range, and analyzed the crystal structure and crystal chemistry of BiPO4 and Bi2P4O13 in the crystallization glass. The effect of different chemical compositions on the vibration of Q elements in phosphobismuth glass structure was studied by Fourier Transform Infrared and Raman spectroscopy. It was found through chemical durability evaluation that the dissolution rate of glass in water continued to decrease with time, and the decreasing trend continued to be stable. Through the research on the structure and performance of P2O5–Bi2O3–CaO ternary glass, a lead-free low-melting phosphate glass with excellent comprehensive performance was obtained, and the best composition of glass sample was determined. The P2O5–Bi2O3–CaO glass system is a potential lead-free candidate for sealing material.

Effects of surface fluoride-functionalizing of glass fiber on the properties of PTFE/glass fiber microwave composites

Abstract:In this work, fluoride-functionalized glass fiber (F-GF) was prepared, in which glass fiber (GF) was modified with g-methacryloxy propyltrimethoxy silane (gamma-MPS), and then reacted with 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate (TFEMA). Subsequently, PTFE/glass fiber microwave composites were prepared by incorporating 5 wt% of the GF, gamma-MPS modified GF (M-GF) or F-GF into PTFE. The effect of F-GF on the mechanical and dielectric properties, as well as moisture absorption and coefficient of thermal expansion of the composites were investigated. The results show that fluorine is successfully grafted onto the surface of GF through -CF3 group, and F-GF forms a dense and compact interfacial structure with PTFE. The mechanical properties of PTFE/F-GF, including tensile strength (38.53 MPa) and elongation (226.82%), are obviously higher than those of PTFE/M-GF (34.73 MPa and 179.50%, respectively) and PTFE/GF (34.82 MPa and 174.33%, respectively). In addition, the PTFE/F-GF composite shows improved density (2.174 g cm(-3)), dielectric constant (2.18), and decreased dielectric loss (0.0009), moisture absorption (0.008%) and temperature coefficient of dielectric constant (-18.6 ppm per degrees C). The conclusions demonstrate that the method of surface fluorination of glass fibers offers promising application in PTFE based microwave materials.

Abstract:Glasses in the ternary system ZnO–Sb2O3–P2O5 were investigated as potential alternatives to lead based glasses for low temperature applications. The glass-forming region of ZnO–Sb2O3–P2O5 system has been determined. Structure and properties of the glasses with the composition (60−x)ZnO–xSb2O3–40P2O5 were characterized by infrared spectra (IR), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results of IR indicated the role of Sb3+ as participant in glass network structure, which was supported by the monotonic and remarkable increase of density (ρ) and molar volume (VM) with increasing Sb2O3 content. Glass transition temperature (Tg) and thermal stability decreased, and coefficient of thermal expansion (α) increased with the substitution of Sb2O3 for ZnO in the range of 0–50mol%. XRD pattern of the heat treated glass containing 30mol% Sb2O3 indicated that the structure of antimony–phosphate becomes dominant. The improved water durability of these glasses is consistent with the replacement of easily hydrated phosphate chains by corrosion resistant P–O–Sb bonds. The glasses containing ⩾30mol% Sb2O3 possess lower Tg (<400°C) and better water durability, which could be alternatives to lead based glasses for practical applications with further composition improvement.
Effect of MgF2 addition on sinterability and mechanical properties of fluorapatite ceramic composites fabricated by wollastonite and phosphate glass

Abstract:In this paper, we successfully report the design and synthesis of fluorapatite ceramic composites using phosphate glass and wollastonite as raw materials via a simple sintering method. The effects of MgF2 additives in phase composition, microstructure, densification, and mechanical properties are investigated at various temperatures from 600 °C to 900 °C, and characterized by SEM/EDS, XRD, FTIR, linear shrinkage and water absorption, flexural strength analysis. It shows that the densification and mechanical behavior of composites increase with both the sintering temperature and MgF2 content. Especially, the sample SCPF-7 exhibits the highest densification and optimal mechanical properties at 900 °C. At these conditions, the water absorption of fluorapatite ceramic composite is less than 0.20%, and the flexural strength is over 70 MPa. For the microstructure analysis, the formation of fluorapatite with a rod-like microstructure is enhanced with the increase of MgF2 content. The amelioration of these properties is due to the formation of a new phase which helps to the formation of compact microstructure. The findings in this work provide a feasible strategy for the preparation of fluorapatite ceramic composites from available phosphate glass and wollastonite at a lower temperature.

Abstract:The glass composition (70-x)PbO–(30-y)B2O3–(x+y)AlF3, where x and y ranges from 0 to 20 mol%, were prepared using the conventional melt-quenching-annealing technique. The structural and thermal properties of the glasses were comprehensively analyzed using techniques like Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA), Dilatometry, Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). XRD confirmed the amorphous, non-crystalline structure of the glasses. The glass network was found to be composed of structural units such as PbO4, BO4, BO3 and AlO6 using FTIR spectroscopy. FTIR analysis revealed significant structural changes, including the transformation of BO4 to BO3 units and the increase in non-bridging bonds, particularly with higher AlF3 content. DTA was instrumental in determining characteristic temperatures, such as the glass transition, melting, and peak crystallization temperatures, along with glass stability parameters (∆T, Hr, Tgr) for all samples. The study found that the addition of AlF3 led to a decrease in these characteristic temperatures when replacing B2O3, but an increase when replacing PbO. Variations in the density and thermal expansion of the lead borate glass were observed upon the addition of AlF3, decreasing when substituting for PbO and increasing when substituting for B2O3. These findings provide insights into the properties of oxyfluoride glasses, paving the way for future optimization in their composition for varied applications.

Optical and Thermal Properties of A New Nd-Doped Phosphate Laser Glass

Abstract:In this paper, we report the optical and thermal properties of a new Nd-doped phosphate laser glass. Glass samples with 0.5-3.7 wt% Nd-doping concentrations were prepared, annealed, cut and polished for different measurements, including glass density and refractive index, absorption spectra and emission cross section, as well as laser properties. A Mach-Zehnder interferometer was used to measure the temperature coefficient of refractive index (dn/dT) and optical path length (dS/dT) in the temperature range of 30-100 degrees C. Moreover, by increasing the glass temperature up to 500 degrees C, the thermal expansion of this new glass was also measured. On the basis of these optical, thermal and thermo-optic parameters, we calculated and analyzed some of glass parameters, such as the electronic polarizability of oxygen ions, the optical basicity of this phosphate-based glass, and especially discussed their thermal shock resistance properties. It is suggested that this new Nd-doped phosphate laser glass is an excellent candidate for high energy and high repetition rate laser applications.

Abstract:Laser glass has been widely used in laser ignition devices, fundamental physical research, and material processing. In addition to the exploration of the glass composition, the optimization of preparation conditions is also of crucial importance to the performance of laser glass. Herein, the modification effect of additional fluorine and sulfur agents on Nd3+-doped fluoro-sulfo-phosphate glasses (FSP) has been investigated in detail. The contents of F and S were increased by up to 42% and 40% after agent addition. Fluorine and sulfur agents also decrease the non-linear effect and increase the chemical durability of FSP glasses, respectively. Moreover, the local environment around Nd3+ ions is examined by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR)., The direct connection between Nd-F and the possible connection between Nd3+ and [SO4]2− have been detected with agent addition, which facilitate the promotion of radiation parameters. The emission cross-section and quantum efficiency of FSP glass increase by up to 56% and 54% after agent addition. This study aims to demonstrate the structure and property variations brought by additional agents, providing insight into the optimization of the melting procedure of high-performance FSP laser glasses.
Effect of Acid Etching on Properties of Phosphate Laser Glass

Abstract:Acid etching experiment was carried out for phosphate laser glass with different content of Li2O.The effect of acid etching on properties of laser glass without ion-exchange was investigated.The weight loss rate of glass etched in different concentration of H2SO4 solution and the effect of acid etching on glass surface morphology were examined.The impurities and scratch marks could be eliminated after short time of acid etching.In addition,a short time of acid etching could reduce some microcracks on glass surface.Acid etching can also enhance glass fracture temperature and hardness.However,the modification of fracture temperature was limited.The glass absorption spectrum showed that acid etching exhibited no obvious effect on the pattern and peak value of absorption spectrum.Short time of acid etching improved the intensity of glass fluorescence spectrum.
