Abstract:We present a C- or C+L-band selective ASE source using the 1times2 optical switch in a bi-directional pumping configuration. The 25.9 mW C-band or 22.5 mW C+L-band ASE spectrum is obtained merely by control the state of the optical switch.

Abstract:We report on a band selective amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) source of an erbium-doped fibre (EDF), which can operate in either the C- or L-band region. The band selective ASE source is realized using a pump conversion technique by a 1×2 optical switch, which makes the ASE source design convert between a backward and a forward pumped configuration alternately. A heavily doped erbium fibre and a 1480 nm laser diode are adopted for this design synchronously to enhance the power of L-band ASE. A power of 16.2 mW for C-band ASE and 11.8 mW for L-band ASE are obtained with a total pump power of 100 mW.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel scheme for band selection in an amplified spontaneous emission source (ASE) based on erbium-doped fiber is demonstrated. C-band operation is obtained without backward ASE feedback whereas L-band operation is obtained with backward ASE feedback with the used of a 1X2 optical switch. A selective ASE source with an output power of 27.6mW for the C-band and 11.8mW for the L-band is obtained experimentally with a total pump power of 100mW of 1480nm laser diode. This band selective ASE source convenience the users select the necessary band when needed without any form of upgrading or additional module attachment therefore has the potential use for the dual-band DWDM device characterization and metro networks.

Abstract:We have analyzed the characteristics of 1.3 μm praseodymium (Pr3+) doped bidirectionally pumped double pass (BIP-DP) configuration amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) source theoretically and experimentally. The source’s simulation model was established and corresponding simulated results were given. The effects of pump ratio, Pr3+-doped fiber (PDF) length, total pump power and source’s optical losses were researched. The output power of BIP-DP ASE source is mainly affected by the total pump power, PDF length and source’s optical losses, while it has little relationship with the pump ratio. The BIP-DP ASE source operating at the symmetric bi-directional pump condition was constructed experimentally. The acquired output power of more than 5 mW has been obtained experimentally, which was with the quasi-gaussian output spectrum, and its 3 dB bandwidth is ~ 20 nm.

Abstract:Optical wideband source of L-band amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) from erbium doped fiber has extensive application in fiber sensors and device testing; here the pump power conversion is one of the key technique. In this work, based on the secondary pumping mechanism by C-band power for L-band signal, a Sagnac loop is used to feed-back the output of C-band ASE, the reflected C-ASE propagates along single direction in the fiber and is amplified in expending inversion population, so that the utility of pump power for L-band ASE is increased. Experimentally, the total output power was 14 dBm at 125 mW 980 nm pumping i.e. pump power conversion efficiency up to 20% was achieved. Without gain flatten filter, the 1 dB bandwidth was 31.1 nm (1568.9～1600 nm), so that high pump conversion efficiency and broad L-band ASE source was demonstrated.

Abstract:A new technique to generate a C+L-band flat amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) source in one-stage erbium-doped fiber (EDF) using bi-directional pumping configuration is analyzed. The simulation results show that the key point of obtaining flat C+L-band ASE spectrum in one-stage EDF is using a laser diode operated at 980nm as backward pump source. ASE source with nearly 80-nm bandwidth can be obtained by means of selecting suitable fiber length and properly adjusting the ratio of forward to backward pump power.

Abstract:A high efficiency amplified spontaneous emission(ASE) broadband fiber source by using the bi-directional pumped one-stage configuration is reported.The experimental results show that a C+L-band flat-spectrum fiber source with bandwidth of 80 nm(1525～1605 nm) was obtained by adjusting the forward and backward pump power within a certain fiber length.The pump conversion efficiency is relevant to the erbium-doped fiber (EDF) length and the pump power allotment of forward and backward pump lasers.Selecting the required shortest fiber length has the benefit of improving pump conversion efficiency as well as cutting down the cost for reasons of shorter erbium-doped fiber needed.A high efficiency C+L-band ASE source with the output power of 13.5 dBm and pump conversion efficiency of 23.2% is obtained experimentally using this configuration.
A Novel Two-Stage Erbium Amplified Spontaneous Emission Fiber Source with 80nm Bandwidth

Abstract:In this paper, a practical two-stage scheme is suggested for generating a C+L-band erbium-doped fiber amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) broadband light source. A considerable power increase of the L-band ASE spectrum is achieved by injecting the C-band ASE into the long section erbium-doped fiber. The C+L-band ASE source is obtained by combining the enhanced L-band ASE with the C-band ASE from two stages respectively. A spectrum flat ASE source with nearly 80nm bandwidth and about 15.9dBm output power is obtained with a total pump power of 180mW. Namely, the pump conversion efficiency is about 21.6%. Such a broadband incoherent light source is desirable for various applications in some areas like sliced wavelength-division multiplexed local-access networks, characteristic measurement for dense wavelength-division multiplexed components, and fiber-optic sensor systems etc.

Abstract:We report our latest experimental results on a simple and compact wavelength switchable V-coupled cavity semiconductor laser. Discrete wavelength switching of 26 channels with 100GHz spacing is achieved with a side-mode-suppression-ratio of about 37 dB, using a single-electrode control. It is shown that the wavelength channels can be switched in opposite directions with different consecutively switchable ranges by tuning the long or short cavity.

Abstract:Consecutive wavelength switching characteristics of a simple, compact, and digitally wavelength-switchable laser based on V-coupled cavities are reported. Wavelength switching through thermal and carrier injection effects is examined. Without using band gap engineering for the tuning section, 26- and 9-channel wavelength switching schemes are achieved via thermal and carrier injection effects, respectively. The performances of these two tuning schemes are then compared.

Abstract:A new semiconductor laser structure with digitally switchable wavelength is proposed. The device comprises two coupled c. avities with different optical path lengths, which form V-shaped branches with a reflective 2x2 half-wave optical coupler at the closed end. The reflective 2x2 coupler is designed to have a pi-phase difference between crosscoupling and self-coupling so as to produce synchronous power transfer functions. High single-mode selectivity is achieved by optimizing the coupling coefficient. The switchable wavelength range is greatly increased by using Vernier effect. Using deep-etched trenches as partial reflectors, additional waveguide branch structures are used outside the laser cavities to form a complete Mach-Zehnder interferometer, allowing space switching, variable attenuation, or high speed modulation to be realized simultaneously. Abstract:A tunable and switchable dual-wavelength Er-doped fiber ring laser using simultaneously forward and backward amplified spontaneous emissions is proposed and demonstrated experimentally at room temperature. A polarization-maintaining fiber Sagnac interferometer is used as a comb filter. This laser has eleven different output modes in the range of 1559–1566nm that can be switched flexibly from one to another. Single- and dual-wavelength lasers with a 3-dB linewidth of 0.7nm and optical signal-to-noise ratios of more than 28dB have a small tunable range. Spacing of dual-wavelength laser can be changed from 1.8nm to 0.8nm with the wavelength׳s increment. The laser shows good wavelength and peak power stabilities.

Abstract:The 2 mu m waveband, specifically near 1.9 mu m, is an imperative resource that could possibly be exploited in future communications systems. This is due to the promising infrastructural developments at the wavelength region (hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber, thulium-doped fiber amplifier) near 1.9 mu m. In this work, we report the 1 x N selector switch based on Mach-Zehnder interferometers operating near the 1.9 mu m wavelength region. As an elementary cell ( N = 2), an insertion loss as low as 1.1 dB, P-pi of 23 mW, 10-90% switching time of lower than 38 mu s and a crosstalk of lower than -25 dB from 1880 to 1955 nm has been determined. In order to prove scalability, the 1 x 8 switch ( N = 8) is demonstrated, indicating crosstalk as low as -21 dB, considering all possible switching configurations across the abovementioned wavelength region. Insertion loss levels are examined.

Abstract:We report the first experimental demonstration of a single-electrode-controlled digitally wavelength switchable V-coupled-cavity laser with high side-mode-suppression-ratio (SMSR) in the 40 dB range. Sixteen-channel and twenty-six channel wavelength switchable lasers with 100 GHz spacing are demonstrated with the maximal SMSR of 40 dB and 37 dB, respectively. They do not require complex gratings, multiple epitaxial growths, or complex tuning algorithms. The device size is only 500 mu m x 300 mu m. Such a simple, compact, and high-performance laser has great potential as a low-cost alternative to existing complex tunable lasers for wide deployment in optical networks and beyond. Abstract:We present investigations into a narrow-linewidth, quasi-continuous-wave pulsed all-solid-state amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) source by use of a novel multiple-pass zigzag slab amplifier. The SE fluorescence emitted from a Nd:YAG slab active medium acts as the seed and is amplified back and forth 8 times through the same slab. Thanks to the angular multiplexing nature of the zigzag slab, high-intensity 1064-nm ASE output can be produced without unwanted self-lasing in this configuration. Experimentally, the output energy, optical conversion efficiency, pulse dynamics, spectral property, and beam quality of the ASE source are studied when the Nd:YAG slab end-pumped by two high-brightness laser diode arrays. The maximum single pulse energy of 347 mJ is generated with an optical efficiency of ~5.9% and a beam quality of 3.5/17 in the thickness/width direction of the slab. As expected, smooth pulses without relaxing spikes and continuous spectra are achieved. Moreover, the spectral width of the ASE source narrows versus the pump energy, getting a 3-dB linewidth of as narrow as 20 pm (i.e. 5.3 GHz). Via the sum frequency generation, high-intensity, smooth-pulse, and narrow-linewidth ASE sources are preferred for solving the major problem of saturation of the mesospheric sodium atoms and can create a much brighter sodium guide star to meet the needs of adaptive imaging applications in astronomy.

Abstract:We demonstrate an optical hitless wavelength-selective switch based on single micro-ring resonator embedded with an equal armed Mach-Zehnder interferometer. It can simultaneously operate at multiple different wavelengths at the distance of times of FSR as a comb filter and without wavelength blocking during switching.

Abstract:We report the design and demonstration of novel 2 $\mu$m band Watt-level fiber amplifiers, fiber lasers, and wideband ASE sources that are pumped with broad spectrum Watt-level ASE sources instead of conventional fiber laser pumps. We show good agreement between the simulations and experimental results for the performance of a single-stage Ho-doped fiber amplifier at 2050nm wavelength pumped by a 50 nm broadband Tm-doped ASE source centered at 1860 nm. Next, we show that the new ASE pumping approach works effectively for a two -stage Ho-doped fiber amplifier as for a single stage Ho-doped fiber amplifier. Then, we demonstrate successfully the pumping of a Tm-doped fiber laser at 2039 nm using an ASE source centered at 1550 nm. Finally, we produce a novel 265 nm wide broadband ASE source at 2 $\mu$m by concatenating Tm and Ho ASE sources. Our ASE-based pumping approach is simple and versatile compared to the standard laser based pumping means, and leads to similar device performance.

Abstract:In a L-band EDFA, not only the pump power conversion efficiency (PCE) can be improved but also the gain can be clamped by C-band laser injection. On one hand, the injected C-band laser compresses the possible leakage of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE); while on the other hand, the maximum inversion level is limited by the high emission coefficient when the amplified C-Band laser light becomes the dominant pump source, which means that the maximum signal gain is limited so that the gain can be clamped. The numerical and experimental results show that the increment of PCE requires only a certain injected light power, but the clamped gain and the dynamic input power range is dependent on both of the injected wavelength and power.

Abstract:We report on a one-stage erbium-doped fibre amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) source with 80 nm bandwidth and 13.5 dBm output power. The broad bandwidth erbium ASE source was realized in an erbium-doped fibre with 37 m length by a 1480 nm laser diode and a 980 nm laser diode as forward and backward pump sources, respectively. The total pump power is only 95.7 mW.
