Abstract:We propose and demonstrate wavelength conversion of spectrum-sliced broadband amplified spontaneous emission light sources based on hybrid four-wave mixing (HFWM) in highly nonlinear, dispersion- shifted fibers (HNL-DSFs). The theory of HFWM between coherent pumps and incoherent signal is analyzed. The degenerate HFWM is demonstrated experimentally in a 1-km-long HNL-DSF, where the coherent pump light is provided by a tunable cw laser source and the incoherent signal light is spectrum-sliced from a broadband amplified spontaneous emission light source. A conversion efficiency of about -20.4 dB and a bandwidth of about 38 nm are measured. The experimental result agrees well with the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Simultaneous wavelength conversion of multiple spectrum-sliced amplified spontaneous emission channels is achieved experimentally via four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly-nonlinear dispersion-shifted fiber. A theoretical model for FWM between coherent pump and incoherent signals is built based on FWM theory of coherent light. The theoretical result agrees well with the experimental result.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an 100 Gbit/s hybrid optical fiber-wireless link by employing photonic heterodyning up-conversion of optical 12.5 Gbaud polarization multiplexed 16-QAM baseband signal with two free running lasers. Bit-error-rate performance below the FEC limit is successfully achieved for air transmission distances up to 120 cm.

Abstract:A novel method of wavelength conversion based on four-wave mixing in a dispersion-shifted fiber by using a spectrum-sliced fiber amplifier light source is demonstrated. By utilizing the wavelength region around the zero-dispersion wavelength of a fiber, a coherent light modulated by 5 Gbit/s RZ signal is converted with a conversion efficiency of -24 dB, the maximum wavelength conversion range of four wave mixing is about 3.4 nm.

Abstract:In this paper, a 933 W amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) source with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 50.4 nm is presented. The broadband source is generated by a 1271 W ASE amplifier together with 140m ordinary passive fiber for nonlinear transformation. With multi-wavelength rate equations and a nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE), spectral evolution of the ASE source is analyzed theoretically.

Abstract:All-optical wavelength conversion for 2×11.64 GBaud adaptively-modulated orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (AM-OFDM) signals with QPSK/16QAM formats is experimentally demonstrated in a silicon waveguide. The AM-OFDM signal with partly higher- (and lower-) order formats on lower- (and higher-) frequency subcarriers has better overall conversion performance in receiving optical signal-to-noise ratio and power penalty. In comparison with the OFDM-QPSK signal, at the BER of 3.8×10-3, the bit rate increases 11.64 Gbit/s per channel almost without conversion power penalty increased by replacing the QPSK sequence with the 16QAM sequence on half subcarriers.

Abstract:Wavelength conversion and five-channel multicasting for 20 Gbit/s quadrature phase-shift keying signals have been experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide with digital coherent detection. The eye diagrams and constellation diagrams of the converted and multicasting idlers are successfully observed. Moreover, the bit-error rates (BERs) of the generated idlers are measured and the power penalties are all less than 0.7 dB at a BER of 3×10(-3).

Abstract:We investigate bandwidth enhancement and response flattening of wavelength conversion based on cascaded sum-frequency generation and difference-frequency generation (SFG/DFG) in quasi-phase-matched periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides by use of two pump lights. Analysis shows that the conversion properties deeply depend on the pump settings. The bandwidth is efficiently enhanced by augmenting the pump wavelength difference. The critical bandwidth corresponding to the response fluctuation of 1dB in a 3-cm-long waveguide reaches 80–90nm, which is enough to cover the entire conventional-band and long-wavelength-band. The cascaded SFG/DFG bandwidth is about 24% broader than that of the cascaded second-harmonic generation and difference-frequency generation-based configuration with the same waveguide length. However, the response fluctuation is also enhanced together with the bandwidth enhancement. The method of pump detuning is presented to flatten the response fluctuation. The fluctuation is reduced by more than 1dB and it can be further reduced by increasing the pump detuning value with a little efficiency penalty.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the C-band wavelength conversion using four-wave mixing in a 17-mm-long silicon-on-insulator waveguide pumped by a dispersed mode-locked femtosecond laser pulse. The idler can be observed with an incident average pump power lower than 4 dBm, and about 35 nm of conversion bandwidth from 1530 nm to 1565 nm is measured by using a 1550-nm pump wavelength. The pulse-pumped efficiency is demonstrated to be higher, by more than 22 dB, than the cw-pumped efficiency. The conversion efficiency variations with respect to the pump and signal powers are also investigated.

Abstract:Linear and nonlinear characteristics of devices using millimeter-scale spools of highly nonlinear fiber are experimentally investigated within 2000-2400nm spectral range. Coils with radius larger than 3.5 mm indicate that macro-bending induced radiation loss is negligible up to 2400nm. Devices with smaller diameter coiling resulted in macro-bending losses that dominate over micro-bending losses beyond 2200nm. A tunable short-wave infrared source was constructed using a coin-sized fiber module to demonstrate an efficient nonlinear conversion from 1.26 to 2.2 microm.

Abstract:Broad-hand and pulsewidth maintained wavelength conversion based on a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) consisting of l-km high-nonlinearity dispersion-shifted fiber (HNL-DSF) is realized in the whole C-band, Because only I-km HNL-DSF fiber is used, the walkoff and dispersion effects are reduced. After 160-km standard single-mode fiber return-to-zero (RZ) transmission at 10 Gb/s and full-dispersion compensation, the converted signal has a small penalty and the pulsewidth of the converted pulses is almost maintained; these;results indicate that the converted pulses have very good performance in the whole C-band.

Abstract:Modern information networks are built on hybrid systems working at disparate optical wavelengths.Coherent interconnects for converting photons between different wavelengths are highly desired. Although coherent interconnects have conventionally been realized with nonlinear optical effects, those systems require demanding experimental conditions, such as phase matching and/or cavity enhancement, which not only bring difficulties in experimental implementation but also set a narrow tuning bandwidth（typically in the MHz to GHz range as determined by the cavity linewidth）. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate coherent information transfer between two orthogonally propagating light beams of disparate wavelengths in a fiber-based optomechanical system, which does not require phase matching or cavity enhancement of the pump beam. The coherent process is demonstrated by interference phenomena similar to optomechanically induced transparency and absorption. Our scheme not only significantly simplifies the experimental implementation of coherent wavelength conversion but also extends the tuning bandwidth to that of an optical fiber（tens of THz）, which will enable a broad range of coherent-optics-based applications,such as optical sensing, spectroscopy, and communication.
