Abstract:We propose and demonstrate wavelength conversion of spectrum-sliced broadband amplified spontaneous emission light sources based on hybrid four-wave mixing (HFWM) in highly nonlinear, dispersion- shifted fibers (HNL-DSFs). The theory of HFWM between coherent pumps and incoherent signal is analyzed. The degenerate HFWM is demonstrated experimentally in a 1-km-long HNL-DSF, where the coherent pump light is provided by a tunable cw laser source and the incoherent signal light is spectrum-sliced from a broadband amplified spontaneous emission light source. A conversion efficiency of about -20.4 dB and a bandwidth of about 38 nm are measured. The experimental result agrees well with the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Orthogonal dual-pump polarization insensitive wavelength conversion based on four-wave mixing of 1.2 Tb/s optical OFDM superchannel in high-nonlinear optical fiber is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for the first time. The converted signal is coherent detected, and OSNR penalty is around 2 dB after wavelength conversion.

Abstract:All-optical wavelength conversion (AOWC) plays an important role in the future transparent optical networks, in order to enhance the reconfigurability and non-blocking capacity. On the other hand, high-order quadrature amplitude modulations (QAMs) have been extensively studied for achieving the high-speed and high-spectral-efficiency optical transmission. Since high-order QAMs are more sensitive to phase and amplitude noise, to implement an AOWC sub-system suitable for highorder QAM signals with minimized power penalty, it is important to optimize the operation conditions in order to avoid extra nonlinear distortions co-existed in the AOWC process. Our experimental results show that, constellation monitoring provides a more intuitive and accurate approach to monitor the converted high-order QAM signals, especially in presence of nonlinear phase noise such as self-phase modulation (SPM). We experimentally demonstrate an AOWC of 64QAM signal through fourwave mixing (FWM) in highly-nonlinear (HNLF). The performance of the AOWC is optimized through the constellation monitoring of the converted signal, achieving a negligible power penalty (< 0.3dB at BER of 10-3) for 60-Gbps 64QAM after conversion. Abstract:Wavelength conversion and five-channel multicasting for 20 Gbit/s quadrature phase-shift keying signals have been experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide with digital coherent detection. The eye diagrams and constellation diagrams of the converted and multicasting idlers are successfully observed. Moreover, the bit-error rates (BERs) of the generated idlers are measured and the power penalties are all less than 0.7 dB at a BER of 3×10(-3).

Abstract:All-optical wavelength conversion for 2×11.64 GBaud adaptively-modulated orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (AM-OFDM) signals with QPSK/16QAM formats is experimentally demonstrated in a silicon waveguide. The AM-OFDM signal with partly higher- (and lower-) order formats on lower- (and higher-) frequency subcarriers has better overall conversion performance in receiving optical signal-to-noise ratio and power penalty. In comparison with the OFDM-QPSK signal, at the BER of 3.8×10-3, the bit rate increases 11.64 Gbit/s per channel almost without conversion power penalty increased by replacing the QPSK sequence with the 16QAM sequence on half subcarriers.

Abstract:A novel loop configuration for generation of four-wave mixing (FWM) and suppression of input pump wave, signal wave, and amplified spontaneous emission is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The novel loop configuration is very simple and functions independently of the wavelengths of the pump and the signal waves. By use of the novel loop configuration, nonreturn-to-zero wavelength conversion at 10 Gbits/s is achieved. The FWM-to-pump ratio, the FWM-to-signal ratio, and the signal-to-noise ratio are improved by 17.9, 18.8, and 8.2 dB, respectively. A principle experiment of wavelength conversion of four simultaneous channels is demonstrated.

Abstract:We demonstrate a four-wave-mixing-based wavelength converter suitable for coherent optical transmission at 100 Gb/s/lambda and beyond that uses phase-diversity and nonconstant amplitude modulation formats. Our setup consists of 2 m of bismuth oxide-based nonlinear fiber and two copolarized external cavity pump lasers. We demonstrate wavelength conversion of 112-Gb/s polarization-multiplexed return-to-zero quadrature phase-shift keying and 144-Gb/s 16-ary quadrature-amplitude modulation signals. Less than 0.4-dB optical signal-to-noise ratio penalty at BER = 2 x 10(-3) due to wavelength conversion was measured.

Abstract:All-optical wavelength multicasting has been experimentally demonstrated for 36 Gbit/s 16-quadrature amplitude modulation signals based on four-wave mixing processes in a silicon waveguide with multiple pumps. In our experiment, dual pumps are injected together with the signal into the waveguide and nine idlers are generated, involving five wavelength multicasting channels. Coherent detection and advanced digital signal processing are employed, and the recovered constellation diagrams of the multicasting idlers show a root-mean-square error vector magnitude degradation as small as 2.74%. The bit error rate (BER) results are measured for these multicasting idlers, and the power penalties are all lower than 0.96 dB at the BER of 3.8 x 10(-3) (corresponding to the forward error correction threshold). Abstract:The dual-pump all-optical wavelength conversion based on a four-wave mixing (FWM) in a high-nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber (HNL-DSF) is demonstrated experimentally. The polarization sensitivity of the wavelength converter based on this dual-pump figuration is investigated experimentally and theoretically. The experimental results indicate that the wavelength-conversion configuration with copolarization pumps shows the smallest polarization sensitivity. A model of the beating-wave modulation from the dynamic wave equation is erected to explain the experimental phenomena, and the theoretical analyses agree well with the experimental results.

Abstract:In this paper, polarization-insensitive wavelength conversion based on orthogonal-pumps and four-wave mixing in HNLF is experimentally demonstrated for high-speed 112-Gb/s PolMux-RZ-QPSK transmission with digital coherent detection. The conversion performance of the proposed scheme is investigated for both single- and four-channel input signals, with the achieved post-conversion OSNR for the two cases shown to be 30 and 20 dB, respectively. Moreover, it is shown that the OSNR of the converted single-channel signal can be maintained above 25 dB even if the wavelength spacing between the original and converted signals is larger than 25 nm. Finally, the BER of 4x112-Gb/s PolMux-RZQPSK converted signals after 1 km HNLF transmission is measured to be below 1x10(-4). The optimum OSNR and launched HNLF power are also investigated.

Abstract:With the recent trend of employing spectrally efficient multi-level modulation formats in optical communication systems, it is highly desirable to exploit the all-optical wavelength conversion (AOWC) schemes for formats, such as 16- or 64-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals. Since the linear and nonlinear phase noise is transferred with the data to the converted wavelength in AOWC subsystem, it is imperative to optimize the operation condition in AOWC to suppress noise to allow compatibility phase-noise sensitive high-order QAM formats. We first investigate the performance optimization of AOWC for high-order QAMs like 64QAM through four-wave mixing in highly nonlinear fiber, and then discuss our proposed AOWCs schemes for high-order QAM signals such as 16/64-QAM using coherent pumps which is free of phase noise from pumps.

Abstract:Transparent wavelength conversion based on four-wave mixing(FWM) in a SOA and in a HNDSF is experimentally demonstrated for a 43Gb/s return-to-zero frequency shift keying(FSK) signal. When a return-to-zero FSK signal propagates through the SOA or HNDSF. the wavelength will be converted and the waveform will be reshaped due to the FWM effect. Our experiments show that the performance of the converted signal is enhanced due to the reshaping characteristics, which indicates the potential of FWM as bit rate transparent wavelength conversion mechanism in future high-speed systems.
