Abstract:Delta-sigma modulation (DSM) has been considered as an effective means to replace the common public radio interface (CPRI) for the implementation of novel mobile fronthaul (MFH) architectures. However, the recent studies paid great attention on the performance optimizations of the delta-sigma modulators, which could help to enhance signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Few of them focus on the improvement of noise immunity. In this paper, we apply three-dimensional (3D) constellations to DSM, thereby improving the noise immunity performance of the ultra-high order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) constellations. Moreover, addressing the huge number of constellation points in the ultra-high order constellations, we propose a novel constellation approach based on 3D-constellation partition. This approach significantly simplifies the transmission system, leading to an 8-fold improvement in processing efficiency. The experimental demonstrations were realized in a 100 GHz photonics-assisted W-band transmission system, indicating that the transmission scheme based on 3D-constellation could obtain an approximate 0.5 dB gain in receiver sensitivity compared to that using 2D-constellation. Verified by the transmission of ultra-high order DSM signals in the 15-km single-mode fiber (SMF) and 2.6-m W-band wireless link, we could achieve 262144-QAM at a rate of 17.5 Gb/s under a simple digital signal processing (DSP).
