Abstract:We propose an application based dynamically reconfigurable optical network on chip architecture and a power efficient reconfigurable optical router structure. The simulation results show the reconfigurable architecture can reduce path-setup delay by 70% compared with Torus and 43% compared with Firefly under a dynamic traffic.

Abstract:As the transistor’s feature scales down and the integration density of the monolithic circuit increases continuously,the traditional metal interconnects face significant performance limitation to meet the stringent demands of high-speed,low-power and low-latency data transmission for on-and off-chip communications.Optical technology is poised to resolve these problems.Due to the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor（CMOS） compatible process,silicon photonics is the leading candidate technology.Silicon photonic devices and networks have been improved dramatically in recent years,with a notable increase in bandwidth from the megahertz to the multi-gigahertz regime in just over half a decade.This paper reviews the recent developments in silicon photonics for optical interconnects and summarizes the work of our laboratory in this research field.

Abstract:On-chip communication, including short, often-multicast, latency-critical coherence and synchronization messages, and long, unicast, throughput-sensitive data transfer, limits the power efficiency and performance scalability of many-core chip-multiprocessor systems. This article presents Iris, a CMOS-compatible high-performance low-power nanophotonic on-chip network. Iris' linear-waveguide-based throughput-optimized circuit-switched subnetwork supports throughput-sensitive data transfer. Iris' planar-waveguide-based WDM broadcast-multicast subnetwork optimizes latency-critical traffic and supports the circuit; setup of circuit-switched communication. Overall, the proposed design delivers an on-chip communication backplane with high power efficiency, low latency, and excellent throughput.

Abstract:The paper presents a novel energy efficient routing scheme for photonic network on chip (PNoC) based on the micro-resonator which takes the insertion loss and the path-setup latency into consideration in order to design a high performance per watt multi-processors. The path-setup latency is a major contributor to the whole system's latency that has something to do with queuing. And insertion loss which has impact on power consumption is closely related to the number of micro-resonators in on state. To solve the multi-objective optimization problem, we design a straight line first heuristic routing scheme. The goal of this routing scheme is to reduce the path-setup latency and insertion loss. Simulation results show that this scheme can low the latency with lower the insertion loss as little as possible.

Abstract:Optical interconnects outperforms the traditional electrical interconnects with lower power consumption, higher bandwidth density and scalability. We propose a scalable optical interconnect for on- chip core-to-memory communication. The key part of the optical interconnect is scalable optical switching blocks, which use less microring resonators with different wavelengths to provide higher parallelism for the memory access communication. We demonstrate the 4-port switching block with six microring resonators. The experimental results show the average insertion loss of 4-port optical switching block is 6.956 dB.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel wireless Network on Chip (NoC) architecture, which adopts a virtual hierarchical topology to achieve both low latency and power consumption. In this architecture, Radio Frequency Interconnect (RF-I) is used to establish the global network among routers. We also design a dynamic bandwidth allocation scheme to balance the network traffic, and an efficient multicast routing algorithm to increase the throughput. The simulation results show that our architecture can achieve at least 24.7% latency reduction and 17.8% power consumption saving compared with wired Mesh NoC.

Abstract:The all-optical/optoelectronic hybrid intelligent computing with high speed and low power consumption characteristics has emerged as a promising solution for the bottleneck of Moore's Law. However, the low deployment flexibility and low integration limit the further development of optical computing systems, and it is urgent to match the new artificial intelligence theory with the physical characteristics of light itself. In this paper, we proposed a reconfigurable computing architecture based on planar optical waveguide, called wave network, which can be used for hardware development of optical switches, optical logic devices or neural networks. Inspired by the neuronal perceptron model, the elements of wave network are analyzed from the point of view of basic pixel units. Wave network has the processing capability of pulse input and time sequence input. To achieve low-power weight mapping, non-volatile materials with CMOS compatiblity characteristics are introduced above the waveguide (etc. phase change materials, multiferroics materials, and resistive switching materials). This hybrid structure provides a large-scale, low-cost, rapid development platform for the new photonic computing paradigm. And the simulation results show that the properties of the waveguide remain stable at different geometric scales and have the potential of scaling down.

Abstract:Data center networks are experiencing unprecedented exponential growth, mostly driven by the continuous computing demands in machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms. Within this realm, optical networking offers numerous advantages, including low latency, energy efficiency, and bandwidth transparency, positioning it as a compelling alternative to its electronic counterparts. In this work, we showcase a range of software-defined optical networking applications deployed on a general-purpose programmable integrated photonic processor. Leveraging graph-based theory, we experimentally demonstrate dynamic optical interconnects, circuit switching, and multicasting on the same photonic platform, yielding remarkable results in terms of crosstalk and reconfiguration speed. Our approach harnesses the benefits of reconfigurability and reliability, paving the way for a new generation of high-performance optical devices tailored for data center and computing clusters.

Abstract:The perfect shuffle-exchange network (PSEN) is a widely used optical network-on-chip topology. In this study, we designed a kind of rearrangeable and ultra-compact PSEN, which contains three ultra-compact components: left perfect shuffle, left inverse perfect shuffle, and 2×2 optical switch modules. They were then interconnected into a non-blocking 8×8 PSEN. The size of the entire optical PSEN module reaches only 8 μm × 87.6 μm ≈ 700 μm 2 , which is approximately 1000 times smaller than existing optical network-on-chip (ONoC) architectures (usual mm 2 level). When signals with different wavelengths are input into different channels, the highest insertion loss in the valuable C-band is -1.1 dB, its lowest value is -0.7 dB, the maximum insertion loss fluctuation is only 0.4 dB, and the average crosstalk is maintained at approximately -28 dB. This PSEN could have wide applications in nanophotonics computation and nanophotonics networks.

Performance evaluation of an integrated photonic convolutional neural network based on delay buffering and wavelength division multiplexing

Abstract:Photonic technologies have shown a promising way to build high-speed and high-energy-efficiency neural network accelerators. In previously presented photonic neural networks, architectures are mainly designed for fully-connected layers. When convolutional layers are executed in such neural networks, the large-scale electrooptic modulation array heavily increases the energy dissipation on chip. To increase the energy efficiency, here we show an integrated photonic architecture specifically for convolutional layer calculations. Optical delay lines replace electronics to execute data manipulations on optical chip, reducing the scale of electro-optic modulation array. Consequently, the energy dissipation of these parts is mitigated. Powered by wavelength division multiplexing, the footprint of delay lines is significantly reduced compared with previous art, thus being practical to fabricate. We evaluate the potential performance of the proposed architecture with respect to component flaws in practical fabrications. According to the results, with well-controlled system insertion loss, energy efficiency of the proposed architecture would surpass previously presented works and the state-of-art electronic processors. We anticipate the proposed architecture is beneficial for future fast and energy-efficient convolutional neural network accelerators.

Abstract:Network-on-chip (NoC) has become a candidate communication infrastructure in Chip Multiprocessor. Study shows the resource utilization is quite low in on-chip network. In this paper, TrafficLite router is proposed to shut down the less used switch in the router. In the TrafficLite router, there are data paths to bypass the switch. Injection and ejection ports are separated from other ports in order to inject and eject packet when the router is set to lite mode. And the managements of virtual channels and buffers are also adjusted to fulfill the requirements of the turn free transmission. Furthermore, an enhanced XY routing algorithm is introduced to avoid the ping-pong transmission in the network. Both synthetic traffic and real world applications show the advantage of TrafficLite router. Up to 30% reduction of latency and 60% reduction of power consumption can be gained.

Abstract:As chip multiprocessors (CMPs) keep growing in capability, on-chip communication efficiency is crucial to the overall performance. However, on-chip networks based on electronic switches suffer from excessive power consumption and limited performance. In order to take advantages of optical interconnect, we propose an optimized design toward a highperformance and low-loss Clos-Benes-based hierarchical optical network-on-chip (NoC) for large-scale CMPs. We propose several key techniques, including a loss-aware adaptive (LAA) routing for intraswitch Benes network, a priority-based round-Robin virtual output queue selection and a Q-learning-based heuristic routing for interswitch Clos network, and a local transfer link (LTL) technique to improve the traffic locality. A case study on a 256-core CMP under uniform traffic shows that the network throughput is increased by 346.7%, 61%, and 12.9%, respectively, than the mesh, fattree, and the traditional generic Clos-Benes optical NoC. On average of a set of real applications, the application end-toend delay is reduced by 47.6%, 28.2%, and 19.4%, respectively, than the mesh, fattree, and the traditional generic Clos-Benes network. Meanwhile, the average optical power loss is decreased by 11.8% and 49.9%, respectively, as compared to the mesh and fattree. As compared to a baseline Clos-Benes network, the use of LAA routing together with the LTL could reduce the average optical power loss by 28.4%.
A Low-Cost and High-Throughput NoC-Aware Chip-to-Chip Interconnection

Abstract:To offer sufficient computing capability, current hardware systems tend to be equipped with multiple chips, while each chip integrates tens to hundreds of cores with Network-on-Chip (NoC) architecture. Thus, chip-to-chip interconnection for NoCs becomes indispensable. However, state-of-the-art inter-chip interconnection, like PCIe or SRIO, suffers from latency and bandwidth bottlenecks especially for communication-intensive tasks. In this paper, we propose a NoC-aware chip-to-chip interconnection scheme. In addition to a lightweight interconnection architecture and protocol, we utilize NoC routers to improve inter-chip connection. A virtual-channel router with transmission priority in the NoC is proposed to eliminate the congestion in the chip-to-chip interconnection. The interconnection system is implemented in Verilog RTL and verified on the Xilinx ZCU102 evaluation kit, achieving up to 10Gb/s/lane line rate with low resource utilization.

Abstract:On many-core chip designs, short, often-multicast, latency-critical messages, used extensively in high-level coherence and synchronization protocols, often become the bottleneck of parallel performance scaling. This paper presents Spectrum, a hybrid nanophotonic-electric on-chip network that optimizes both throughput and latency. Spectrum's novel planar nanophotonic subnetwork broadcasts latency-critical messages through a wavelength-division multi-plexed (WDM) two-dimensional waveguide. Spectrum's throughput-optimized packet-switching electrical subnetwork handles high bandwidth traffic. Overall, Spectrum delivers an almost ideal CMOS-compatible interconnection network for many-core systems.
