Abstract:Dynamic equations reveal that variations of structure's stiffness and mass may cause changing of its natural frequencies. When damages occurred on a structure, stiffness and mass would change, and different damages would cause different changes of stiffness and mass, and thus the vibrating modes of the structure changed. Comparing a given vibrating mode to the pre-set database would determine the damage and its location. Based on this theory, a method was proposed to detect damage of a pipeline and determine its location by measuring the natural frequencies. A model of a pipeline with several pre-set damages was established using FEM, assuming mass uniformly distributed and section been symmetrical. Vibrating modes on two main orthogonal paths were computed and analyzed. By pattern recognizing, a damage could be determined.

Abstract:For the health monitoring of civil structures, the study of finite element model updating or damage detection mainly focuses on undamped systems. Thus, their objective has been exclusively restricted to the correction of the mass and stiffness matrices. In contrast, this paper performs the model updating and damage detection for damped structures. A theoretical contribution of this paper is to extend the cross-model cross-mode (CMCM) method to simultaneously update the mass, damping and stiffness matrices of a finite element model when only few spatially incomplete, complex-valued modes are available. Numerical studies are conducted for a five-story frame structure with multiple damaged elements. The numerical results reveal that applying the CMCM method, together with an iterative Guyan reduction scheme, can yield good damage detection in general.

Abstract:In structural health monitoring, identification of slight damage is significant but relatively difficult. During the identification of slight damage, the two main shortcomings of l 1 regularization model based on natural frequencies and displacement modes are that displacement modes are insensitive to the slight damage and l 1 regularization cannot accurately characterize the sparsity of structural damage. A method based on l p （0＜p＜1） regularization model with weighted natural frequencies and strain modes was proposed in this study to more accurately identify the multiple slight damage. The proposed model took advantage of the fact that strain modes were more sensitive to the slight damage and l p （0＜p＜1） regularization could more accurately characterize sparsity of structural damage. Furthermore, the intrinsic properties of the natural frequency and strain modes have been considered. Thus, the identification accuracy of the slight damage was further improved. The results illustrate that the proposed model can obtain the stronger anti-noise ability than the l 1 sparse regularization optimization model based on natural frequencies and displacement modes. Moreover, the model can achieve a more accurate damage identification when the noise level is maintained the same.
Using incomplete complex modes for model updating of monopiled offshore wind turbines

Abstract:The soil-structure interface stiffness/damping, structure damping, aerodynamic damping, and hydrodynamic added mass are the four major sources of error while modeling a monopiled offshore wind turbine by using finite element methods. This study develops a comprehensive strategy, involving optimal sensor placement, complex mode expansion, and cross-model cross-mode-based model updating technique, for simultaneously correcting the model parameters associated with the mentioned four major sources of error, when only a few sensors are installed to extract modal data, including modal frequencies and damping ratios, and spatially incomplete mode shapes. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, computer simulations with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory 5-MW reference turbine are carried out. The numerical studies reveal that (1) when clean modal data are utilized, all model parameters can be updated properly by the proposed method; it is recommended the first few low-order modes, together with as many sensors as possible, be used; (2) when contaminated spatially incomplete complex eigenvectors are given, even some model parameters can not be updated accurately, the updated model is still adequate for dynamic analysis and design as long as the dominant model parameters are updated properly.

Abstract:A difference model was developed to deal with the non-uniqueness of structural model updates based on incomplete sets of complex modes and natural frequencies.An unique finite element model update is found by known mass blocks to the structure and measuring the structures new complex modal parameters.The normal modes are then generated from the complex modes with the mass/stiffness/damping matrices then updated by the additional information and the normal modes.Model updating of a mass-spring-damping system with 6 degrees of freedom shows that the algorithm is theoretically complete without iterations and is capable of efficiently updating a model with an incomplete set of complex modes.Writing the unknown system matrices in vector forms presents the physical configuration and reduces the computational cost.

Abstract:A methodology is presented for Bayesian structural model updating using noisy incomplete modal data corresponding to natural frequencies and partial mode shapes of some of the modes of a structural system. The procedure can be used to find the most probable model within a specified class of structural models, based on the incomplete modal data, as well as the most probable values of the system natural frequencies and the full system mode shapes. The method does not require matching measured modes with corresponding modes from the structural model, which is in contrast to many existing methods. To find the most probable values of the structural model parameters and system modal parameters, the method uses an iterative scheme involving a series of coupled linear optimization problems. Furthermore, it does not require solving the eigenvalue problem of any structural model; instead, the eigenvalue equations appear in the prior probability distribution to provide soft constraints. The method appears to be computationally efficient and robust, judging from its successful application to noisy simulated data for a ten‐storey building model and for a three‐dimensional braced‐frame model. This latter example is also used to demonstrate an application to structural health monitoring. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Structural Damage Identification using Modal Data. I: Simulation Verification

Abstract:The change of modal characteristics directly provides an indication of structural damage. Based on changes in frequencies and mode shapes of vibration, a damage identification technique is proposed in this paper for predicting damage location and severity. The method is applied at an element level with a conventional finite-element model. The element damage equations have been established through the eigenvalue equations that characterize the dynamic behavior. Several solution techniques are discussed and compared. The influence of simulated noise in the modal data is also presented. The method has been verified by a number of damage scenarios for simulated beams and has found the exact location and severity of damage. It is demonstrated that multiplying the damaged eigenvalue equations with the undamaged or damaged mode shapes provides more equations and guarantees the damage localization. The resulting equations, however, become more sensitive to the deviation of modal data and the direct solution often yields poor results. Numerical results show that the non-negative least-squares method can lead to satisfactory results in most cases. A regularization algorithm with error-based truncation is necessary to ensure the right solutions.

Abstract:A damage detection method is presented for the identification and quantification of damage that leads to a change in the structure’s mass and/or stiffness properties. The proposed method requires the use of finite element to model the structure in its undamaged state as well as information on the dynamic properties such as frequencies and mode shapes of the structure in its damaged state. The technique is applicable to any structure that can be accurately modeled using the finite element method and whose frequencies and mode shapes can be reliably measured. A structure pseudo force vector derived from the residual force method is described to locate the damaged regions in the structure. A matrix condensation approach in conjunction with a proportional damage model is then employed to quantify the damage by calculating the change in stiffness and mass properties of the damaged elements in the structure. The validity of the method is demonstrated by applying it to three structures: a beam, a frame and a plate. It is shown that if the amount of damage is not excessively large, the proposed method can be used to detect damage in these structures even when the measured system dynamic properties are slightly erroneous.

Abstract:In order to establish a governing equation of motion to rationally describe the phenomenon of beats in the vibration of a damaged concrete structure,a new nonlinear physical model is constructed by introducing a spring coil and a damping coil into a single degree of freedom system.In the model,the spring coil is connected in series with the spring of the system constituting a spring with complex stiffness,and the damping coil is connected in series with the damper of the system constituting a damper with complex damping.By introducing both the equivalent stiffness and damping,a generized governing equation of motion of the model and the physical explaination of its key parameters are obtained.By energy analysis of the free vibration of the system,a monotonic variation relationship between structural damage and the key parameters of the governing equation is created,which would probably afford a new idea of finding out an index used to identify the nonlinear damage of structures.

Abstract:Damage in a structure alters its static and dynamic characteristics. These changes can be represented in terms of either the modal parameters or the structural parameters. Modal parameters include natural frequencies, mode shapes, and their derivatives, such as the modal curvature and modal stress energy. Structural parameters are the mass, the stiffness, the flexibility and the damping matrices of the structure. According to the properties of cable-stayed bridges, a series of damage indexes are constructed to indicate damage of cable, tower and girder respectively. A comprehensive index accounting for their interaction and the whole bridge damage is presented which is robust to measurement noises and uncertainties in ambient conditions. The sensitivities of these damage indexes are illustrated by numerical studies. The effectiveness of the proposed damage detection. method of cable-stayed bridges is demonstrated through an engineering project.

Abstract:The health monitoring and damage detection of structures are major scientific issues that the civil engineering discipline, which made great achievements in the 20 th century, has bequeathed to the 21 st century. Despite the installation of health monitoring systems in many large structures, implementing damage detection through finite element model updating is often time-consuming or even infeasible due to the size of the model and the presence of numerous uncertain parameters. To address this issue, this paper proposes a substructure-based model updating method. The entire structure is divided into substructures with reduced degrees of freedom, allowing for the simplification of the motion equation by employing only a small number of low-order modes from each substructure. Consequently, the analysis scale of the structure is effectively reduced. The discarded higher modes are compensated by residual modes to ensure the accuracy of structural response and sensitivity. Subsequently, a damage identification program substructure-based model updating is developed, which is applied to component mode synthesis and damage identification for large structures. By precisely detecting damage in critical areas, accurate diagnosis and evaluation of the global structural safety are achieved. The results validate the implementation, computational efficiency, and accuracy of the proposed substructure-based model updating method. This approach shifts the focus from model updating of the entire structure to model updating of substructures, with the aim of fundamentally resolving the technical challenge of accurate damage detection of large and complex structures. Furthermore, it provides theoretical support for the practical application of damage detection in large civil structures.

Abstract:Anomaly and damage detection is an important research topic in the field of structural health monitoring (SHM). It is in general difficult to establish a precise computational model and measure multiple dynamic loads for complex structures. Model-free identification methods using only response measurements are therefore highly desired. Based on second-order statistics blind separation (SOSBS), this study explores response-only blind excitation separation and structural feature extraction when the structure is subject to multiple periodic excitations. The proposed method proceeds with two steps: (i) a transformation to convert the measurement space to eigenspace with identity covariance matrix and compact the measurement dimension to independent source dimension; and (ii) joint diagonalization of covariances with various time shifts to determine the mixture features. Neither structural model nor measurement of excitations is required in this method, and the extracted mixture matrix representative of structural dynamic characteristics can be used for structural anomaly detection and damage diagnosis. Both numerical simulation of a 3-degree-of-freedom vibration system and experimental study of a 5-story physical structure are conducted to verify the proposed method.

Abstract:The frequency and vibration mode were the main modal parameters representing dynamic characteristics of structure, and the frequency and vibration mode of the damaged structure were studied in this paper.First, through measuring the frequency and vibration modes of the damaged structure , a correction theory of matrix was used was used to modify the finite element model, which was consistent with the frequency and vibration modes measured from the damaged structure.Secondly, the finite element model ( FEM) of the revision theory can be ex-pressed by a linear combination of the element stiffness matrix and the damage factor.The damage identification problem transformed into the solution of the combination coefficients.Next, the range of reasonable values of dam-age factors was given and the damage factors could be solved by the optimization method.Through the numerical simulation of a ten-span truss structure, the structural damage could be identified significantly by merely using fre-quencies and vibration modes of the first five orders.Furthermore, the method does not need to normalize the meas-ured vibration modes, but has strong applicability.
Test Analysis of Detection of Damage to a Complicated Spatial Model Structure

Abstract:A two-stage damage detection approach is proposed and experimentally demonstrated on a complicated spatial model structure with a limited number of measurements. In the experiment, five known damage patterns, including 3 brace damage cases and 2 joint damage cases, were simulated by removing braces and weakening beam-column connections in the structure. The limited acceleration response data generated by hammer impact were used for system identification, and modal parameters were extracted by using the eigensystem realization algorithm. In the first stage, the possible damaged locations are determined by using the damage index and the characteristics of the analytical model itself, and the extent of damage for those substructures identified at stage I is estimated in the second stage by using a second-order eigen-sensitivity approximation method. The main contribution of this paper is to test the two-stage method by using the real dynamic data of a complicated spatial model structure with limited sensors. The analysis results indicate that the two-stage approach is able to detect the location of both damage cases, only the severity of brace damage cases can be assessed, and the reasonable analytical model is critical for successful damage detection.

Abstract:Finite element model updating provides an important supplement for finite element modelling. However, some studies have shown that if the tested structure involves local nonlinearities due to damages, material properties and large deformation et al., it is difficult to achieve an accurate modified model using conventional model updating methods that are based on the assumption of linear structures. To address this issue, a two-stage model updating method separating the effects of local nonlinearities is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the underlying linear frequency response function is obtained by using the conditioned reverse path method. Then, combined with the Sherman-Morrison-Woodbury formula and the model updating objective function established by the frequency response function similarity metric, then structural model updating and damage detection are carried out as the second stage. Three numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. This method can not only accurately identify the location and quantify the extent of structural damages, but also has the advantages of not based on sensitivity, not depending on the selection of frequency points, not repeatedly calling the initial model et al. The proposed method has high computational efficiency and avoids the numerical problems often encountered by conventional frequency response function-based model updating methods.

Abstract:The accurate mathematical models for complicated structures are very difficult to construct. The work presented here provides an identification method for estimating the mass, damping, and stiffness matrices of linear dynamical systems from incomplete experimental data. The mass, stiffness, and damping matrices are assumed to be real, symmetric, and positive definite. The partial set of experimental complex eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors are given. In the proposed method the least squares algorithm is combined with the interation technique to determine system's identified matrices and corresponding design parameters. Several illustrative examples, are presented to demonstrate the reliability of the proposed method. It is emphasized that the mass, damping and stiffness matrices can be identified simultaneously.

Abstract:The flexibility can be approximately synthesized with the first several measured modal parameters, i.e. the so called modal flexibility. The modal flexibility matrix will change with damage in a structure, and the change of modal flexibility should contain the information of damage. It is important to find a damage index that can pick up damage from the change of modal flexibility. To address this issue, the mathematical tool LU decomposition is introduced to deal with the modal flexibility matrix in order to find damage clearly. After decomposition, the modal flexibility is decomposed into a lower triangular matrix L and an upper triangular matrix U. Numerical results of both single and multiple damage cases under white noise excitation indicate that the matrix U has enough information of damage; and the proposed new technique can be utilized to locate the damage accurately. The present numerical study will lay a foundation for the application of real-time structural health monitoring in experiments and engineering.

Abstract:A vibration-based method that uses changes in natural frequencies of a structure to detect damage has advantages over conventional nondestructive tests in detecting various types of damage, including loosening of bolted joints, using minimum measurement data. Two major challenges associated with applications of the vibration-based damage detection method to engineering structures are addressed: accurate modeling of structures and the development of a robust inverse algorithm to detect damage, which are defined as the forward and inverse problems, respectively. To resolve the forward problem, new physics-based finite element modeling techniques are developed for fillets in thin-walled beams and for bolted joints, so that complex structures can be accurately modeled with a reasonable model size. To resolve the inverse problem, a logistical function transformation is introduced to convert the constrained optimization problem to an unconstrained one, and a robust iterative algorithm using a trust-region method, called the Levenberg-Marquardt method, is developed to accurately detect the locations and extent of damage. The new methodology can ensure global convergence of the iterative algorithm in solving under-determined system equations and deal with damage detection problems with relatively large modeling error and measurement noise. The vibration-based damage detection method is applied to various structures including lightning masts, a space frame structure and one of its components, and a pipeline. The exact locations and extent of damage can be detected in the numerical simulation where there is no modeling error and measurement noise. The locations and extent of damage can be successfully detected in experimental damage detection.
