Abstract:We design and demonstrate a cost-effective 2times2 ultrafast multicast-capable optical switch (MCOS) based on a Sagnac interferometer. The Sagnac interferometer is composed of a LiNbO3 phase modulator (PM) with two polarization-maintaining pigtail fibers and a 3-dB polarization-maintaining coupler. The MCOS works at three states: cross, bar, and multicast, in the entire C-band (1525-1565 nm) by controlling the driven voltage of the PM. Polarization- dependence is eliminated by splicing the pigtail fibers of the PM and the 3-dB coupler with 0degand 90deg angles, respectively. The measured switching time is ~0.6 ns. Multiple 2times2 MCOS elements can be constructed into a large nonblocking N x N MCOS matrix.

Abstract:An optical switch based on a scanning mirror was designed in this paper. The optical switch is pro-grammable and controlled by an embedded Linux system that switches between the fiber array channels onthe UI of the touch display. Meanwhile, the switching sequence and residence time of the optical switch canbe preset. In addition, the optical switch can be self-calibrated to obtain the maximum output power of eachchannel. The principle of the optical switch is analyzed and the performance of the optical switch is tested ex-perimentally. The experimental results show that the average insertion loss is less than 17 dB for the singlemode fiber array, the average crosstalk between adjacent channels is more than 30 dB, and the switching time between the adjacent channel is less than 1.3 ms. The average insertion loss is less than 2.4 dB for the multi-mode fiber array. It has the advantages of low loss, low delay, high precision, good stability, high repeatabil-ity, low cross-talk between the adjacent channel, and good man-machine interaction for the application of theWavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) and multi-channel optical waveguide sensors test device

Abstract:The paper presents the sorts, features and applications of semiconductor all-optical switches. According to their structures, the switches can be divided into planar-type and waveguide-type. According to their operation principles, they can be divided into phase-shift-type and frequency-shift-type. The high efficiency of all-optical switching has been proved in 100 Gbit/s optical transmission experiment.

Abstract:In this paper, a non-volatile polarization-insensitive 1×2 silicon optical switch utilizing phase-change materials is presented. The presented device is composed of three polarization beam combiners/splitters, two directional couplers with phase change materials, and a polarization-insensitive waveguide crossing. By adjusting the phase state of phase-change material, polarization-insensitive switching behavior is realized. As an example, the proposed switch using Ge2Sb2Te5 is comprehensively optimized and analyzed based on particle swarm optimization algorithm and finite difference time domain method. The designed device can have a crosstalk of less than −15.98 dB and an insertion loss of smaller than 0.95 dB over the C-band in the case of TE polarization, while a maximum crosstalk of −13.53 dB and a maximum insertion loss of 1.37 dB can be obtained within the C-band in the case of TM polarization.

Abstract:We demonstrate an optical switch array based on the topology of Butterfly by using dual-microring resonators which can be used in the ultra-compact network. The proposed switch is composed of 12 basic switch elements tuned by thermo-optic (TO) effect, which can build links freely without any blocking. Due to the advantages of microring resonators, the footprint switch array is smaller than 0.2 mm(2). The optical structure can complete 4- and 8-ports signal routing. It shows a large bandwidth over 50GHz, thereby performing well under condition of high-speed data transmission.

Abstract:A novel design of micromachining-based high speed 1x2 optical switch array is presented. Employing a triangle-shaped micromachined mirror for beam directing, the design achieved a high level integration of multiple switches on a single substrate, significantly shortened switch time to below 1 ms. An array of four 1x2 switches was fabricated and the performance of the switch array prototype was reported, attaining a fast switch time of less than 750 mu s, extremely low cross-talk <-70dB, an insertion loss of between 0.6 and 0.8 dB, and with an overall size of only 60x36x7 mm(3). The experimental result was compared with that from a finite element analysis and a good agreement was obtained.

Abstract:On-chip optical communications are growingly aiming at multimode operation together with mode-division multiplexing to further increase the transmission capacity.Optical switches,which are capable of optical signals switching at the nodes,play a key role in optical networks.We demonstrate a 2×2 electro-optic Mach–Zehnder interferometer-based mode-and polarization-selective switch fabricated by standard complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor process.An electro optic tuner based on a PN-doped junction in one of the Mach–Zehnder interferometer arms enables dynamic switching in 11 ns.For all the channels,the overall insertion losses and inter-modal crosstalk values are below 9.03 and–15.86 dB at 1550 nm,respectively.

Abstract:We report a fiber optic switch based on a novel MEMS technology allowing fast switch (<2 ms), excellent isolation (>50dB) and wide bandwidth. Each switch module consists of an electromagnetically actuated gold-coated silicon mirror rotating around a 100 mum diameter shaft and a miniature 5V driven coil. Enabling technology is precision EDM machining and laser cutting. The switch is scalable to 8 X 8 and allows the realization of high capacity cross-connects.

Abstract:An optically activated optical switch based on suppression of mode interference (SMI) is presented. The imaging properties of multi-mode interference (MMI) section in the switch with Y-branch can be modified by a controlling light injection. The switch was simulated by finite difference beam propagation method (FD-BPM) and fabricated on GaAlAs/GaAs epitaxial materials. At the wavelength of 1.31 um, the primary experiment showed an extinction ratio of about 8 dB with controlling light power density of 73.5 W/mm2.

Abstract:We report an all-optical switch based on two-pump four-wave mixing in fibers. The switched signal is not shifted in frequency in this scheme. For different signal wavelengths, the pump wavelengths and powers can be optimized to achieve the best performance. The principle of how to design the switch is discussed in detail. A high extinction ratio of -60 dB is obtained when the pump parameters are optimized by a genetic algorithm that exhibits good convergence property and high computing efficiency. The effect of zero-dispersion wavelength fluctuations along the fiber on the switch is analyzed.

Abstract:Silicon-based optical switch is one of the key components for on-chip optical interconnect systems, and mode division multiplexing technology has been employed to boost optical switches' channel capacity. However, the majority of the proven multimode optical switches have a switching time in the microsecond range, which is insufficient for some applications. In this paper, we design and experimentally demonstrate a high-speed dual-mode 4 × 4 optical switch based on a mode-diversity scheme, composed of four pairs of mode multiplexers and de-multiplexers, and two optimized single-mode 4 × 4 optical switches. Fast switching is enabled based on the carrier dispersion effect. At the same time, we improve the performances of the optical switch by reducing the number of optical switch units used in the 4 × 4 Spanke–Beneš architecture. Its power consumptions are reduced by ∼17%. Its insertion losses are within 8.8 dB in the wavelength range of 1525–1565 nm in the both sates of "through" and "all-cross", while the optical signal-to-noise ratios are larger than 12.8 dB. Also, 50 Gbps data transmission experiments verify the device's data transmission functionality.

Abstract:Mode-and polarization-division multiplexing offer new dimensions to increase the transmission capacity of optical communications. Selective switches are key components in reconfigurable optical network nodes. An on-chip silicon 2 x 2 mode-and polarization-selective switch that can route four data channels on two modes and two polarizations simultaneously is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The overall insertion losses are lower than 8.6 dB. To reduce the inter-modal crosstalk, polarization beam splitters are added to filter the undesired polarizations or modes. The measured inter-modal and intra-modal crosstalk values are below -23.2 and -22.8 dB for all the channels, respectively. (C) 2017 Chinese Laser Press

Abstract:An all-optical 2 x 2 cross/bar switch is demonstrated exploiting nonlinear polarization rotation in a single semiconductor optical amplifier. The proposed architecture allows operation with packets at the same input wavelengths and does not require high-speed clock control pump signals. Bit-error-rate measurements at the switch output ports for both cross/bar configurations and for both cases of one and two packet signals connected to the input ports are performed. A maximum of 2.3 dB of power penalty was observed in the worst case. The switching energy was as low as about 400 fJ per bit at 10 Gb/s.

Abstract:A 2x2 cross/bar optically-driven switch is implemented with a single semiconductor optical amplifier. The switch exploits nonlinear polarization rotation experienced by two input signals in the amplifier in presence of a control pump light. The two input data signals travel in opposite directions inside the amplifier. In absence of the control light, the low-power input signals do not experience nonlinear effects inside the amplifier; when the pump light is applied, both the input data signals experience cross-phase modulation, which reflects in nonlinear polarization rotation for the output signals due to polarization-dependent carriers modulation in the semiconductor amplifier. Polarizes are then used in the output paths in order to discriminate the output packets for the two possible cases of control pump signal in the ON and OFF state. Bit error rate measurements demonstrate error-free operation for both the possible switch configurations. By letting the input signals to travel the amplifier in opposite directions this architecture enables operation with data packets at the same wavelength. The switch speed is limited by the carriers recombination time in the amplifier, in the order of few hundreds of ps. Semiconductor technology allows implementation of compact, cost-effective, and low-power operating all-optical devices.
