Abstract:Surface plasmonic waveguides usually only support one mode called TM (transverse magnetic) mode. Recently, one waveguide structure that can propagate both TE (transverse electric) and TM mode was proposed. However, the large propagation loss of the plasmonic waveguides with low polarization dependence is still a problem. In order to make loss compensation to solve the problem, this paper makes improvements to decrease the loss of this kind of waveguide. Simulations have been made to prove the feasibility; as respected, low loss or even 0dB can be reached at both modes when low and high index materials are added. The improved plasmonic waveguide has a potential application in guiding and processing of light from a fiber with a random polarization state in low-loss condition and also can be applied to integrated optics devices.

Abstract:A long-range surface plasmon polariton (LRSPP) waveguide consisting of a 15 nm thick gold stripe embedded in a homogeneous polymer BCB is reported. LRSPPs are excited by TM-mode input light successfully using an end-lire method. By scanning the output coupling fibre, the near field of the LRSPP is measured. The propagation loss of as low as 2.34 dB/mm is demonstrated.

Abstract:Two types of surface plasmon polariton waveguides consisting of square metal nanowires or nanotubes covered by low-high index dielectric layers are presented and their guiding characteristics are investigated numerically at the telecom wavelength of 1550 nm. Numerical analysis reveals that depending on the sizes of the covered low-high index dielectric layers, the nanowire based waveguides can be tuned to provide subwavelength confinement of the plasmonic modes with low propagation loss. Even enhanced optical confinement could be achieved by further increasing the nanowire size or replacing the metal nanowires by nanotubes. Consideration of directional coupling between two identical such plasmonic waveguides reveal ultra-low-crosstalk can be realized with relatively small separation distances. These waveguiding structures, compatible with modern fabrication methods, potentially enable the realization of numerous ultra-compact integrated photonic components.

Abstract:A novel ultra-compact polarization rotator (PR) based on surface plasmon polaritons waveguide is proposed. The total footprint of the proposed device is only 0.44μm × 2.55μm. Simulations with 3D-FDTD show that the PR has a broad bandwidth (1.4μm~1.7μm) with extinction ratios larger than 10dB. The insertion losses are less than 1dB during the wavelength range of 1450nm~1650nm.

Abstract:We report a class of long-range hybrid plasmon polariton waveguides capable of simultaneously achieving low propagation loss and tight field localization at telecommunication wavelength. The symmetric (quasi-symmetric) hybrid configurations featuring high-refractive-index-contrast near the non-uniform metallic nanostructures enable significantly improved optical performance over conventional hybrid waveguides, exhibiting considerably longer propagation distances and dramatically enhanced figure of merits for similar degrees of confinement. Compared to their traditional long-range plasmonic counterparts, the proposed hybrid waveguides put much less stringent requirements on index-matching conditions, demonstrating nice performance under a wide range of physical dimensions and robust characteristics against certain fabrication imperfections. Studies concerning crosstalk between adjacent identical waveguides further reveal their potential for photonic integrations. In addition, alternative configurations with comparable guiding properties to the structures in our case studies are also proposed, which can potentially serve as attractive prototypes for numerous high-performance nanophotonic components.

Abstract:Unidirectional surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) have been proven to truly exist at an interface between a magnetized semiconductor and an opaque isotropic material, however, they suffer rather serious leakage loss (with propagation length shorter than two wavelengths) caused by nonlocality. In this work, we investigate an alternative category of unidirectional SPPs existing on a nonreciprocal plasmonic platform with a cladding composed of a dielectric heterostructure transversely terminated by metal. This unidirectional SPP mode exists for small wavenumbers within the entire upper bulk-mode bandgap of the magnetized semiconductor, hence it is robust against nonlocal effects over a broad band. In contrast to previous unidirectional SPPs, the leakage loss of the present unidirectional SPPs is significantly reduced by more than five times, since the portion of modal energy distributed in the cladding is substantially increased. A similar reduction in absorption losses associated with semiconductor dissipation is observed. Though the nonlocality induces a backward-propagating SPP with extremely large wavenumbers, it can be suppressed even at very small level of dissipation. Therefore, our proposed plasmonic waveguide actually exhibits exceptional unidirectional characteristics.

Abstract:Key challenge in the design of plasmonic nano waveguide is to simultaneously achieve high confinement and low propagation loss. This paper presents that a planar hybrid dielectric-loade d plasmonic nano-waveguide (HDLW) could be a promising candidate to build high-performance plasmonic components. Our studies show that the HDLW can achieve better trade-off between the field intensity confinement and the propagation length than a metal-insulator- metal nanoslot waveguide does. Consequently, a 90°-circular bend built with the HDLW can achieve a total loss of 0.3 dB with a small bending radius of 2J.1m. A ring resonator formed with the HDLW shows the excellent performance: with a ring radius of 5 J.1m, this resonator exhibits a large free spectral range (22 nm), a narrow bandwidth (4 nm), and high extinction ration (20 dB). The superior performance of these plasmonic components makes them promising building blocks for nanophotonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:The backside nanoslot excited sub-wavelength grating-coupled Cu-strip silica-based plasmonic waveguides were developed using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation method. The performance of the designed waveguides was simulated, and the effects of copper film thickness on plasmonic wave propagation were analyzed for relatively low propagation loss design. The designed waveguides could achieve unidirectional guiding of the excited surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) with sub-wavelength lateral confinement and acceptable propagation length at nnicroscale, and the recommended design for the sub-wavelength grating-coupled Cu-strip SPP waveguide was given, with the potential applications for the fiber-optic devices or elements.

Abstract:The characteristics of long-range hybrid plasmonic modes guided by multilayer metal-dielectric planar waveguides are investigated at the telecom wavelength. These multilayer structures are formed by sandwiching thin metallic stripes into horizontal silicon slot-like waveguides. Comprehensive numerical studies regarding the geometric parameters' effects on the modal properties reveal that, by properly choosing the dimensions of the metal stripe and the low-index gaps between the stripe and the silicon layers, the symmetric hybrid modes supported by the structures could feature simultaneously ultra-long propagation distance (several centimeters) and subwavelength mode size. Consideration of possible fabrication imperfections shows that the optical performances of the waveguides are quite robust and highly tolerant to these errors. The presented multilayer plasmonic structures greatly extend the capabilities of conventional long-range surface plasmon polariton waveguides by successfully confining light into a subwavelength scale while maintaining the key advantage of enabling ultra-low-loss propagation, which could facilitate potential applications in ultra-long-range plasmon waveguiding and realizations of compact, high-performance photonic components, as well as building optically integrated circuits with complex functionalities.

Abstract:In this paper, a planar waveguide based on spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) with metals on both sides of the corrugated strip as grounds is firstly proposed in microwave region. Simple and efficient conversion between guided waves and SSPPs is realized by gradient corrugated strip with grounds on both sides. Compared with plasmonic waveguide with flaring ground [Laser Photonics Rev. 8, 146 (2014)], the addition of grounds suppresses the radiation loss effectively and improves the low-frequency performance with tighter field confinement, which leads to a wider operating bandwidth. Moreover, as the asymptotic frequency of SSPPs decreasing, the confinement of SSPPs is further enhanced by a defected ground structure (DGS), which is achieved by the periodic grooves symmetrical to those on the corrugated strip. Therefore, miniaturization of the proposed waveguide can be realized. Measured results validate both high efficiency of momentum and impedance matching and enhanced performance in the region of lower frequencies with the wave vectors close to those in free space. Such results have significant values in plasmonic functional devices and integrated circuits in microwave frequencies.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) have attracted intensive attention for the unprecedented developments of light–matter interactions in optics and photonics, providing a feasible method for light confinement and transmission at a subwavelength scale. However, SPPs traditionally suffer from large losses due to the intrinsic dissipations and absorptions, which hinder further development and applications of SPPs. Here, we theoretically and experimentally investigate the concept of stepped waveguide metamaterials behaving as low-loss effective replicas of SPPs. The proposed structure without natural plasmonic material maintains the identical field configuration to that in regular SPP but avoids the inherent losses, outperforming regular low-loss SPP design with natural plasmonic materials on SPP propagation lengths. Furthermore, stepped waveguide metamaterial exhibits excellent compatibility in direct interconnections with arbitrary regular SPP and potentially represents a feasible route toward new SPP devices with low-loss advantages.

Abstract:We report the realization of strongly confined low-loss optical waveguiding at telecommunication wavelength by exploiting the hybridization of photonic modes guided by coupled dielectric mode and Bloch surface polaritons on the interface between one-dimensional photonic crystal and dielectric nanowire. Owing to the combined effects induced by the coupling between two types of guided modes, tight field localization in conjunction with significantly lower propagation loss can be achieved simultaneously. The characteristics of the hybrid modes are comprehensively numerically investigated through tuning key structural parameters of the coupled dielectric nanowire and its distance to the photonic crystal surface. The hybrid mode could effectively balance the compromise between the mode confinement and propagation loss for a wide geometrical parameter range. It reveals the hybrid mode is capable of enabling larger propagation distance (centimeter level) with subwavelength mode confinement, leading to a high figure of merit nearly one order of magnitude larger as compared to the conventional hybrid waves in dielectric-metal-based surface plasmon waveguides over the range of dimensions considered. The outstanding properties of the proposed guiding scheme could open up possibilities for a variety of high-performance intriguing nanophotonic components.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) have been thoroughly studied in the past decades for not only sensing but also waveguiding applications. Various plasmonic device structures have been explored due to their ability to confine their optical mode to the subwavelength level. However, with the existence of metal, the large ohmic loss limits the propagation distance of the SPP and thus the scalability of such devices. Therefore, different hybrid waveguides have been proposed to overcome this shortcoming. Through fine tuning of the coupling between the SPP and a conventional waveguide mode, a hybrid mode could be excited with decent mode confinement and extended propagation distance. As an effective alternative of SPP, Bloch surface waves have been re-investigated more recently for their unique advantages. As is supported in all-dielectric structures, the optical loss for the Bloch surface wave is much lower, which stands for a much longer propagating distance. Yet, the confinement of the Bloch surface wave due to the reflections and refractions in the multilayer structure is not as tight as that of the SPP. In this work, by integrating a periodic multilayer structure that supports the Bloch surface wave with a metallic nanowire structure, a hybrid Bloch surface wave polariton could be excited. With the proposed hybrid nanowire structure, a hybrid mode is demonstrated with the deep subwavelength mode confinement and a propagation distance of tens of microns.

Abstract:A novel hybrid long-range surface plasmon waveguide structure comprising a narrow metal stripe, two relative low-index dielectric regions and dielectric ridges is proposed and analyzed. With the dielectric ridges and the two relative low-index dielectric regions symmetrically distributed on both sides of the narrow metal stripe, a symmetric hybrid long range mode with low electromagnetic transmission loss and subwavelength scale confinement is achieved. By optimizing the parameters, the propagation length of the proposed waveguide is increased to over two times to that of the conventional symmetric dielectric loaded surface plasmon waveguide, but the mode size only increases about 20%. For this benefit, the hybrid long-range surface plasmons waveguide is a good candidate for realizing high density photonic integration circuits.

Abstract:Confining light at a subwavelength scale is important for building ultracompact opto-electronic networks. Plasmonic waveguides are good candidate devices for this purpose. However, the oscillation of electrons relating to surface plasmon polaritons causes energy dissipation, which limits the propagation length and thus reduces the waveguide performance. Here, we design a low-loss plasmonic waveguide composed of a nanowire dimer structure on a metal substrate, in which the dominant modes are localized within the air gap between the nanowires and referred to as air-host plasmonic modes. The use of air instead of dielectric materials as the host medium can reduce ohmic loss and avoid the dispersion effect of dielectric. When the constructed nanowires have a diameter less than 100 nm, the air-host mode has subwavelength-scale confinement and a propagation length of ∼100 μm, which has broad application prospects for the construction of ultracompact plasmonic devices.
