Abstract:A long-range surface plasmon polariton (LRSPP) waveguide consisting of a 15 nm thick gold stripe embedded in a homogeneous polymer BCB is reported. LRSPPs are excited by TM-mode input light successfully using an end-lire method. By scanning the output coupling fibre, the near field of the LRSPP is measured. The propagation loss of as low as 2.34 dB/mm is demonstrated.

Abstract:A novel ultra-compact polarization rotator (PR) based on surface plasmon polaritons waveguide is proposed. The total footprint of the proposed device is only 0.44μm × 2.55μm. Simulations with 3D-FDTD show that the PR has a broad bandwidth (1.4μm~1.7μm) with extinction ratios larger than 10dB. The insertion losses are less than 1dB during the wavelength range of 1450nm~1650nm.

Abstract:Subwavelength constraints and propagation distance contradiction in surface plasmon polariton (SPP) waveguide are currently the key issues. This study based on symmetric dielectric waveguide structures is designed for loaded glass SPPs to propagate optimization devices. The SPPs and Kretschmann model with similar structure are achieved without sacrificing the size of subwavelength waveguide and propagation distance of SPPs. FDTD analysis results show that improved waveguide structure of SPPs can significantly increase the propagation distance to 20-folds and improve the electric field strength. Comparative film layers of different thicknesses be seen as well. The film is the thinnest with best localization. The improved structure significantly increased the coupling effect of SPPs. This structure for SPPs in new photonic devices, broadband communications systems, small photon loops, and other aspects of integrated optoelectronic applications provide critical devices.

Abstract:In common plasmonic structures, absorption and radiation losses are often mutually restricted and can seriously influence the device performance. The current study presents a compound structure composed of multilayer grating stripes and multilayer shallow trenches. A small depth was adopted for the trench configuration to exclude the extra bend loss. These two sections supported Fabry–Perot resonance and cavity modes, respectively, with hybrid modes formed through intercoupling. In addition, the total loss for the entire framework was clearly reduced due to the introduction of the trench geometry, indicating that both absorption and radiation losses were successfully taken into consideration in the compound structure. Significantly, such a low loss realized by the hybridization of surface plasmon polariton modes has rarely been seen before. Moreover, the debatable relationship between the total and partial quality factors was described for the first time based on a hybrid mode analysis to establish a new approach to investigate the different resonance modes. In the detailed calculation process, the relative electric field intensity was first adopted to stipulate the effective areas for the various modes, which is more reasonable than using the common definition that is based on a unit structure. The multilayer trench grating exhibited a relatively low loss without weakening energy localization, which is significant in the design of plasmonic devices.

Abstract:The backside nanoslot excited sub-wavelength grating-coupled Cu-strip silica-based plasmonic waveguides were developed using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation method. The performance of the designed waveguides was simulated, and the effects of copper film thickness on plasmonic wave propagation were analyzed for relatively low propagation loss design. The designed waveguides could achieve unidirectional guiding of the excited surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) with sub-wavelength lateral confinement and acceptable propagation length at nnicroscale, and the recommended design for the sub-wavelength grating-coupled Cu-strip SPP waveguide was given, with the potential applications for the fiber-optic devices or elements.

Abstract:The characteristics of long-range hybrid plasmonic modes guided by multilayer metal-dielectric planar waveguides are investigated at the telecom wavelength. These multilayer structures are formed by sandwiching thin metallic stripes into horizontal silicon slot-like waveguides. Comprehensive numerical studies regarding the geometric parameters' effects on the modal properties reveal that, by properly choosing the dimensions of the metal stripe and the low-index gaps between the stripe and the silicon layers, the symmetric hybrid modes supported by the structures could feature simultaneously ultra-long propagation distance (several centimeters) and subwavelength mode size. Consideration of possible fabrication imperfections shows that the optical performances of the waveguides are quite robust and highly tolerant to these errors. The presented multilayer plasmonic structures greatly extend the capabilities of conventional long-range surface plasmon polariton waveguides by successfully confining light into a subwavelength scale while maintaining the key advantage of enabling ultra-low-loss propagation, which could facilitate potential applications in ultra-long-range plasmon waveguiding and realizations of compact, high-performance photonic components, as well as building optically integrated circuits with complex functionalities.

Abstract:The field of plasmonics has substantially affected the study of light-matter interactions at the subwavelength scale. However, dissipation losses still remain an inevitable obstacle in the development of plasmonic-based wave propagation. Although different materials with moderate losses are being extensively studied, absorption arguably continues to be the key challenge in the field. Here, we theoretically and numerically investigate a different route toward the reduction of loss in propagating plasmon waves. Rather than focusing on a material-based approach, we take advantage of structural dispersion in waveguides to manipulate effective material parameters, thus leading to smaller losses. The potential of this approach is illustrated with two examples: plane-wave propagation within a bulk epsilon-near-zero medium and surface plasmon polariton propagation at the interface of a medium with negative permittivity. We provide the recipe for a practical implementation at mid-infrared frequencies. Our results might represent an important step toward the development of low-loss plasmonic technologies.

Abstract:We provide both experimental and theoretical investigation on extraordinary low transmission through one-dimensional nanoslit and two-dimensional nanohole arrays on ultra-thin metal films. Unambiguous proofs demonstrate that short-range surface plasmon polaritons play a key role leading to this novel phenomenon, which could be useful for creating new polarization filters and other integrated plasmonic components.

Abstract:A magneto-optical (MO) metal-sandwiched multilayered structure composed of metal, MO medium and dielectric buffer layers is presented and investigated by finite-element-method-based-mode solver and perturbation theory. The results show that this structure exhibits large nonreciprocal phase shift, strong mode confinement in the narrow buffer layers as well as very low propagation loss. The propagation length with 1 dB loss is much longer than the required length of pi/2 nonreciprocal phase shifts in this structure. The modal area is smaller than half of the conventional MO waveguides. This phenomenon can be used to achieve a compact plasmonic isolator based on the Mach-Zehnder interferometer.
Novel Ridge-Type Gold Film Waveguide for Surface Plasmon Polariton Laser

Abstract:Surface plasmon polariton lasers are the basis for photonic circuits, but their losses, thresholds, and some other problems remain thorny issues. In this study, we put forward a novel ridge-type gold film surface plasmon polariton laser. The device adopts a multi-layer hybrid waveguide structure, where the bottom layer is a gold film, and a gold ridge is formed over the center of the gold film. We symmetrically place the two SiO2layers on both sides of the gold ridge as buffer layers and deposit a gold nanoribbon on the top of gold ridge. Two air gaps are formed between the gold ridge and SiO2buffer layers. We numerically study the structure, and the results show that at the operating wavelength of 1550 nm, the effective mode area reaches 1.375 × 10−5λ2 , and the confinement factor reaches 0.75. When the width of the SiO2layer is 2 nm, the height of the ridge is 10 nm, and the angle of the ridge is 80°, the waveguide can effectively enhance the light field confinement so as to limit the energy to a very small range and exhibits the minimum gain threshold. The waveguide can provide a solution for the optical source device of the surface plasma excitation circuits and has great application potential in the ultra-small and high-density optical chips.

Abstract:Unidirectional surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) have been proven to truly exist at an interface between a magnetized semiconductor and an opaque isotropic material, however, they suffer rather serious leakage loss (with propagation length shorter than two wavelengths) caused by nonlocality. In this work, we investigate an alternative category of unidirectional SPPs existing on a nonreciprocal plasmonic platform with a cladding composed of a dielectric heterostructure transversely terminated by metal. This unidirectional SPP mode exists for small wavenumbers within the entire upper bulk-mode bandgap of the magnetized semiconductor, hence it is robust against nonlocal effects over a broad band. In contrast to previous unidirectional SPPs, the leakage loss of the present unidirectional SPPs is significantly reduced by more than five times, since the portion of modal energy distributed in the cladding is substantially increased. A similar reduction in absorption losses associated with semiconductor dissipation is observed. Though the nonlocality induces a backward-propagating SPP with extremely large wavenumbers, it can be suppressed even at very small level of dissipation. Therefore, our proposed plasmonic waveguide actually exhibits exceptional unidirectional characteristics.
Electromagnetic Wave Dispersion Curve Computation for Quasi-1D Spoof Surface Plasmon Polaritons

Abstract:The quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) spoof surface plasmon polariton (SSPP) provides a new route for optically transparent electronic devices. The dispersion curves can control the electromagnetic wave propagation characteristics of the quasi-1D SSPP by manipulating the geometric parameters. However, the dispersion curves of quasi-1D SSPP have not been analytically derived and thoroughly studied. This paper derives the dispersion curves of the quasi-1D SSPP using equivalent permittivity and permeability methods, which can accurately predict the relationship between wave number and its geometric parameters. The simulation results validate the proposed dispersion curves. Based on the dispersion curves, this paper further presents a broadband optically transparent transmission line, which can achieve high-efficiency transmission from 3.0 to 14.4 GHz.

Abstract:An ultra-compact and low-loss transverse-electric (TE)-pass polarizer is proposed by utilizing a hybrid plasmonic ridge waveguide structure on a silicon-on-insulator platform. Since the transmission of a plasmonic polarizer is greatly influenced by the interaction between the metal and the optical field, there is a large insertion loss (IL) in the polarizer based on a hybrid plasmonic waveguide. Here, the electric field distribution and the periodic coupling between the fundamental transverse magnetic mode and plasmonic mode are taken into consideration to decrease the IL and shorten the length of the device. For a 4.2 mu m-long polarizer, numerical simulations with the finite-differential-time-domain method show that it has a large extinction ratio (ER) of similar to 29.5 dB with a low IL of 0.18 dB at the central wavelength 1550 nm. In addition, a more than 23 dB ER is achieved across a wide bandwidth of 100 nm. (C) 2018 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Confining light at a subwavelength scale is important for building ultracompact opto-electronic networks. Plasmonic waveguides are good candidate devices for this purpose. However, the oscillation of electrons relating to surface plasmon polaritons causes energy dissipation, which limits the propagation length and thus reduces the waveguide performance. Here, we design a low-loss plasmonic waveguide composed of a nanowire dimer structure on a metal substrate, in which the dominant modes are localized within the air gap between the nanowires and referred to as air-host plasmonic modes. The use of air instead of dielectric materials as the host medium can reduce ohmic loss and avoid the dispersion effect of dielectric. When the constructed nanowires have a diameter less than 100 nm, the air-host mode has subwavelength-scale confinement and a propagation length of ∼100 μm, which has broad application prospects for the construction of ultracompact plasmonic devices.

Abstract:A planar five-layer waveguide with a metal-insulator (with the low permittivity)-metal structure embedded in a high-permittivity dielectric is theoretically studied. A long-range surface mode draws special attention because of its superior properties of low attenuation and a large field localized inside the nanoscale middle gap provided with permittivity-contrast. Effects of the surrounding permittivity and the metal film thickness are investigated, and the electric field amplitude in the gap can be dozens of times higher than that at the outer interfaces. This plasmonic structure may have potential applications in integrated photonic devices.
