Abstract:We introduce a periodic plasmonic waveguiding structure which supports a guided subwavelength optical mode with slow group velocity at a tunable wavelength range and with a tunable slowdown factor. The structure consists of a metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) waveguide side-coupled to a periodic array of MDM stub resonators. Both the MDM waveguide and MDM stub resonators have deep subwavelength widths. We show that such a structure supports a guided optical mode with slow group velocity. The wavelength range in which slow light propagation is achieved can be tuned by adjusting the MDM stub resonator length and the periodicity of the structure. We also show that the slowdown factor increases as the periodicity of the structure decreases, and that light can be slowed down by several orders of magnitude. We find that there is a tradeoff between the slowdown factor and the propagation length of the supported optical mode. In addition, for a given slowdown factor and operating wavelength, the propagation length of the optical mode in the periodic plasmonic waveguide is much larger than the propagation length of the mode supported by a conventional MDM waveguide, in which the slowdown factor can be tuned by adjusting the dielectric layer width. Finally, we show that light can be coupled efficiently from a conventional MDM waveguide to such a periodic plasmonic waveguide. Such slow-light plasmonic waveguides could be potentially used in nonlinear and sensing applications. We use a characteristic impedance model and transmission line theory to account for their behavior.

Abstract:We introduce a plasmonic waveguide system, which supports a subwavelength broadband slow-light guided mode with a tunable slowdown factor at a given wavelength. The system consists of a metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) waveguide side-coupled to a periodic array of MDM stub resonators. The slowdown factor at a given wavelength can be tuned by adjusting the geometrical parameters of the system. In addition, there is a trade-off between the slowdown factor and the propagation length of the supported optical mode. Abstract:Key challenge in the design of plasmonic nano waveguide is to simultaneously achieve high confinement and low propagation loss. This paper presents that a planar hybrid dielectric-loade d plasmonic nano-waveguide (HDLW) could be a promising candidate to build high-performance plasmonic components. Our studies show that the HDLW can achieve better trade-off between the field intensity confinement and the propagation length than a metal-insulator- metal nanoslot waveguide does. Consequently, a 90°-circular bend built with the HDLW can achieve a total loss of 0.3 dB with a small bending radius of 2J.1m. A ring resonator formed with the HDLW shows the excellent performance: with a ring radius of 5 J.1m, this resonator exhibits a large free spectral range (22 nm), a narrow bandwidth (4 nm), and high extinction ration (20 dB). The superior performance of these plasmonic components makes them promising building blocks for nanophotonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:The backside nanoslot excited sub-wavelength grating-coupled Cu-strip silica-based plasmonic waveguides were developed using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation method. The performance of the designed waveguides was simulated, and the effects of copper film thickness on plasmonic wave propagation were analyzed for relatively low propagation loss design. The designed waveguides could achieve unidirectional guiding of the excited surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) with sub-wavelength lateral confinement and acceptable propagation length at nnicroscale, and the recommended design for the sub-wavelength grating-coupled Cu-strip SPP waveguide was given, with the potential applications for the fiber-optic devices or elements.

Abstract:It is demonstrated that with appropriately arranged dielectric nanoparticle structures an extremely low loss guiding of light is achievable at the nanoscale. These dielectric nanoparticle waveguides (DNPWs) exhibit subwavelength transverse confinement of light comparable with metallic plasmon particle waveguides (MPPWs). Different from the MPPWs subject to inevitable intrinsic absorption loss, the material loss for some DNPWs is negligible, enabling long-distance light transport and offering an alternative choice for integrated photonics.

Abstract:In this work, we present a detailed analysis of optical properties of metal–insulator and metal–insulator–metal (MIM) structure-based surface-plasmon waveguides and cavities. It is shown from the dispersion relation, the field distribution, the quality factor Q , and the transmission spectrum that the MIM structure can be designed as a high- Q cavity, supporting slow light with tolerable pulse distortion and lower propagation loss in the axial direction.

Abstract:We have investigated the slow light and trapping effects in tapered metal-insulator-metal plasmonic waveguides. It is found that a significant reduction of group velocity (<0.01c) can be obtained when considering the intrinsic loss of realistic metal. The theoretical analysis shows that the group velocity can be further decreased, even approach zero in the lossless metallic waveguides. The perfect trapping of light is realized when an appropriate gain material is incorporated in the core layer to compensate metallic loss. The proposed ultracompact configuration may find excellent applications on nanoscale optical storages.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polaritons(SPPs)-based waveguides suffer from rather strong damping caused by inherent absobtion losses in metal.Here by introducing nonlinear material to the dielectric core,this paper proposes parametric gain(PG) mechanism to compensate for propagation losses in nanoscale metal-insulator-metal(MIM) waveguides.Using finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) simulation,a significant enhancement(~400%) of the propagation length of a ultraslow light(0.005c) has been demonstrated.

Abstract:Two types of surface plasmon polariton waveguides consisting of square metal nanowires or nanotubes covered by low-high index dielectric layers are presented and their guiding characteristics are investigated numerically at the telecom wavelength of 1550 nm. Numerical analysis reveals that depending on the sizes of the covered low-high index dielectric layers, the nanowire based waveguides can be tuned to provide subwavelength confinement of the plasmonic modes with low propagation loss. Even enhanced optical confinement could be achieved by further increasing the nanowire size or replacing the metal nanowires by nanotubes. Consideration of directional coupling between two identical such plasmonic waveguides reveal ultra-low-crosstalk can be realized with relatively small separation distances. These waveguiding structures, compatible with modern fabrication methods, potentially enable the realization of numerous ultra-compact integrated photonic components.

Abstract:We report the realization of strongly confined low-loss optical waveguiding at telecommunication wavelength by exploiting the hybridization of photonic modes guided by coupled dielectric mode and Bloch surface polaritons on the interface between one-dimensional photonic crystal and dielectric nanowire. Owing to the combined effects induced by the coupling between two types of guided modes, tight field localization in conjunction with significantly lower propagation loss can be achieved simultaneously. The characteristics of the hybrid modes are comprehensively numerically investigated through tuning key structural parameters of the coupled dielectric nanowire and its distance to the photonic crystal surface. The hybrid mode could effectively balance the compromise between the mode confinement and propagation loss for a wide geometrical parameter range. It reveals the hybrid mode is capable of enabling larger propagation distance (centimeter level) with subwavelength mode confinement, leading to a high figure of merit nearly one order of magnitude larger as compared to the conventional hybrid waves in dielectric-metal-based surface plasmon waveguides over the range of dimensions considered. The outstanding properties of the proposed guiding scheme could open up possibilities for a variety of high-performance intriguing nanophotonic components.
Silicon-Slot-Mediated Guiding of Plasmonic Modes: The Realization of Subwavelength Optical Confinement With Low Propagation Loss

Abstract:Waveguiding platforms consisting of metallic nano-wires embedded inside vertical-type dielectric slot waveguides are proposed and the guiding properties are investigated at the telecom wavelength. It is shown that the characteristics of the plasmonic modes can be strongly modified owing to the existence of the silicon rails in close proximity to the metallic nanowire, which enables low-loss light guiding with subdiffraction-limited mode area. Systematical analysis regarding the variation of key geometric parameters has revealed that the symmetric hybrid mode can exist within a wide-range of physical dimensions, and demonstrates improved optical performance over either the conventional hybrid plasmonic mode or the fundamental plasmonic mode supported by a single metal nanowire. Furthermore, we show numerically that the supported symmetric and asymmetric modes can be separately excited through controlling the polarization state of the Gaussian beam that illuminated onto the nanowire tip. The presented hybrid waveguides naturally extend the capabilities of both the silicon slot and metal nanowire structures, which could facilitate a number of potential applications at the subwavelength scale.

Abstract:We propose theoretically that a slow light waveguide constructed by placing a ridge waveguide between two photonic crystals holds an ultraflat band with a quasi-constant group velocity and a very low group velocity dispersion. Meanwhile, the single mode feature is the best choice to facilitate coupling light into the slow light waveguide and avoid losses. Thus, an efficient and compact coupler with a length of 5a for the slow light waveguide is designed to achieve a high coupling efficiency of more than 80% corresponding to the group velocity of 0.0166c in the wide bandwidth.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide side coupled double stubs to realize broadband slow surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) around the telecom frequency 193.5THz. When the depth of single stub is approximately equal to integral multiple of half plasmon wavelength, owing to the constructive interferences between the electromagnetic wave propagating through the MIM waveguide and that reflected from the stubs, wideband slow light effect appears. The improved transmission line theory calculation indicates that the group velocity of SPPs in the plasmonic waveguide system for stub depth 1111nm is 0.1c (c is light speed in vacuum.) over a broad bandwidth of 69THz. Exploiting the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) numerical simulation, the group velocity of pulse for width 20fs (Full width at half high) is calculated. The result agrees well with that predicted by the transmission line theory. This plasmonic waveguide for slow light effect has important potential application in optical delay lines.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) have attracted intensive attention for the unprecedented developments of light–matter interactions in optics and photonics, providing a feasible method for light confinement and transmission at a subwavelength scale. However, SPPs traditionally suffer from large losses due to the intrinsic dissipations and absorptions, which hinder further development and applications of SPPs. Here, we theoretically and experimentally investigate the concept of stepped waveguide metamaterials behaving as low-loss effective replicas of SPPs. The proposed structure without natural plasmonic material maintains the identical field configuration to that in regular SPP but avoids the inherent losses, outperforming regular low-loss SPP design with natural plasmonic materials on SPP propagation lengths. Furthermore, stepped waveguide metamaterial exhibits excellent compatibility in direct interconnections with arbitrary regular SPP and potentially represents a feasible route toward new SPP devices with low-loss advantages.

Abstract:A new kind of hybrid plasmonic waveguide is proposed, and its propagation properties are investigated using the finite-element method. This waveguide consists of a V-shaped silver nanowire embedded in a low-index dielectric cladding above a semiconductor substrate, which can confine light in the subwavelength region with a long propagation length. The field distribution, the mode effective index, the propagation length, and the normalized mode area of the hybrid mode supported by the waveguide are investigated at the wavelength of 1550 nm, which are dependent on the geometric parameters.
