Abstract:Key challenge in the design of plasmonic nano-waveguide is to simultaneously achieve high confinement and low propagation loss. This paper presents that a planar hybrid dielectric-loaded plasmonic nano-waveguide (HDLW) could be a promising candidate to build high-performance plasmonic components. Our studies show that the HDLW can achieve better trade-off between the field intensity confinement and the propagation length than a metal-insulator-metal nanoslot waveguide does. Consequently, a 90°-circular bend built with the HDLW can achieve a total loss of 0.3 dB with a small bending radius of 2μm. A ring resonator formed with the HDLW shows the excellent performance: with a ring radius of 5 μm, this resonator exhibits a large free spectral range (22 nm), a narrow bandwidth (4 nm), and high extinction ration (20 dB). The superior performance of these plasmonic components makes them promising building blocks for nanophotonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:Hybrid plasmonic waveguides based on a surface oxidized dielectric nanowire placed on a metal surface can facilitate simultaneously deep subwavelength mode confinement and large propagation length. Directional coupling based on such waveguides are theoretically investigated. Much lower crosstalk is noticed for such hybrid plasmonic waveguides compared to conventional waveguides based on bare dielectric nanowires. Some modifications, such as vertically placing the metal surfaces or using a metallic block between the nanowires, are studied which can further reduce the crosstalk between two waveguides. The proposed low crosstalk structures based on hybrid plasmonic waveguides can provide a simple platform for plasmonic integration which can at the same time easily interface with traditional photonic circuits.

Abstract:Subwavelength-confined hybrid surface modes of low attenuation were found in a cylindrical waveguide with a high-permittivity-dielectric nanocore nested in a metallic nanotube. When phase-matching conditions are met, mode transfer occurs, which is associated with a strong anti-crossing behavior. At the transfer radius, a hybrid mode with superior properties, namely low propagation attenuation and high light confinement, transforms into the other that has inferior properties. Thus, the superior mode with subwavelength confinement can be efficiently excited through this mode-transfer process when we taper the nested nanocore. This nanoscale cylindrical metallic-dielectric waveguide may have applications in high-density integrated photonic circuits, plasmonic sources, and biosensing techniques. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2011

Abstract:The single mode hybrid dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguide is presented at the wavelength of 1.55 mu m. We show that this waveguiding structure, consisting of a low-index SiO2-stripe sandwiched between a high-index Si-nanowire and a silver film, achieves both long propagation length and strong field confinement with high power intensity. Components such as 90 degrees-circular and S-shaped bends, based on the proposed waveguide with an intensity confinement area of 50x200 nm(2), can obtain a total transmission efficiency exceeding 85% for various bend radii. Finally, we demonstrate that the efficient directional couplers can be developed using two coupled waveguides. In particular, we determine the typical coupling lengths and maximum transfer power for different structural parameters of the coupler. Abstract:The key challenge of the plasmonic waveguide is to achieve simultaneously both the long propagation length and high confinement. The hybrid dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguide consists of a SiO 2 stripe sandwiched between a Si-nanowire and a silver film and thus promises as a best candidate to overcome this challenge. We propose to exploit this unique property of this structure to design different high-efficient silicon-based plasmonic components including waveguide, power splitter, and wavelength-selective ring resonator. As a result, the proposed power splitter with a waveguide cross section ( λ 2 /60) and a strong mode confinement area (~ λ 2 /240) features a low power transmission loss (<0.4 dB) at the optimal arm length of 4 μm with respect to different separation distances of output arms. Moreover, we also demonstrate that a plasmonic ring resonator with a compact ring radius of 2 μm may achieve high optical performance such as high-extinction ratio of 30 dB, large free spectral range of 67 nm, and small bandwidth of 0.6 nm. These superior performances make them promising building blocks for integrated nanophotonic circuits.

Abstract:This paper proposed to use plasmonic waveguides for on-chip nanoscale optical data transmission. To optically transmit data between electronic devices, plasmonic devices, such as plasmonic sources, modulators, waveguides, switches, filters and detectors are needed. A novel planar hybrid plasmonic waveguide (PHPW), which consists of a low-index stripe sandwiched between a high-index nanowire and a metallic film is reported. A highly confined hybrid mode is formed in the low-index stripe as the result of interaction between photonic mode and plasmonic mode. The combination of the plasmonic and photonic modes across the low-index stripe can simultaneously achieve long propagation length and strong field confinement with high power intensity in the PHPW. The PHPW is based on a planar structure, offering additional degrees of freedoms to design a large variety of high-performance passive and active plasmonic devices such as waveguide bends, waveguide couplers and ring resonators.

Abstract:Asymmetric directional coupling between a hybrid plasmonic waveguide with subwavelength field confinement and a conventional dielectric waveguide is investigated. The proposed hybrid coupler features short coupling length, high coupling efficiency, high extinction ratio, and low insertion loss; it can also be integrated into a silicon-based platform. This coupler can be potentially adopted for signal routing between plasmonic waveguides and dielectric waveguides in photonic integrated circuits. Furthermore, it can be exploited to efficiently excite hybrid plasmonic modes with conventional dielectric modes.

Abstract:The emerging development of the hybrid plasmonic waveguide has recently received significant attention owing to its remarkable capability of enabling subwavelength field confinement and great transmission distance. Here we report a guiding approach that integrates hybrid plasmon polariton with dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguiding. By introducing a deep-subwavelength dielectric ridge between a dielectric slab and a metallic substrate, a hybrid dielectric-loaded nanoridge plasmonic waveguide is formed. The waveguide features lower propagation loss than its conventional hybrid waveguiding counterpart, while maintaining strong optical confinement at telecommunication wavelengths. Through systematic structural parameter tuning, we realize an efficient balance between confinement and attenuation of the fundamental hybrid mode, and we demonstrate the tolerance of its properties despite fabrication imperfections. Furthermore, we show that the waveguide concept can be extended to other metal/dielectric composites as well, including metal-insulator-metal and insulator-metal-insulator configurations. Our hybrid dielectric-loaded nanoridge plasmonic platform may serve as a fundamental building block for various functional photonic components and be used in applications such as sensing, nanofocusing, and nanolasing.

Abstract:We report the realization of low-loss optical waveguiding at telecommunication wavelength by exploiting the hybridization of photonic modes guided by coupled all-dielectric nanowires and plasmon waves at planar metal-dielectric interfaces. The characteristics of the hybrid plasmon polaritons, which are yielded by the coupling between two types of guided modes, can be readily tuned through engineering key structural parameters of the coupled nanowires and their distances to the metallic surfaces. In addition to exhibiting significantly lower attenuations for similar degrees of confinement as compared to the conventional hybrid waves in single-dielectric-nanowire-based waveguides, these hybridized plasmonic modes are also capable of enabling reduced waveguide crosstalk for comparable propagation distances. Being compatible with semiconductor fabrication techniques, the proposed guiding schemes could be promising candidates for various integrated photonic devices and may lead to potential applications in a wide variety of related areas.

Abstract:A coupler is proposed to interface a hybrid dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguide (HDLPW) with a silicon photonic slab waveguide. The HDLPW is firstly designed and optimized to attain the best tradeoff between the mode confinement and the propagation distance. The designed coupler is inspired from the taper configuration and numerically modeled through finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation. The results demonstrate that a high confinement and low loss of the energy is achieved from a silicon photonic slab waveguide into the dielectric slot of area 50×200nm2 in the HDLPW. The transmission attained through the coupler with a compact size of 400nm is found to be as high as 80% (1dB). Further, the planar nature of taper configuration makes the coupler easy to fabricate using the state-of-the-art CMOS facilities. The proposed coupler is useful in enabling the integration between photonic and hybrid plasmonic waveguides and thus realizing on-chip hybrid integrated circuits.

Abstract:We propose and investigate a type of hybrid plasmonic waveguide in a metal V-groove. A high-permittivity nanowire was placed in the metal channel covered with a dielectric film of lower permittivity. Deeper sub-wavelength confinement and much longer propagation distance were achieved in comparison with conventional channel plasmonic waveguides. The overall performance was improved as compared with the conventional hybrid plasmonic structure based on a flat metal surface. Finite element analysis showed that both the mode propagation and field profile can be adjusted by changing the nanowire radius and film thickness. Some benefits, such as a reduced scattering loss caused by the surface roughness, are also expected owing to the unique mode profile. The proposed approach has potential for application in high-level photonic integration.

Abstract:We report a class of long-range hybrid plasmon polariton waveguides capable of simultaneously achieving low propagation loss and tight field localization at telecommunication wavelength. The symmetric (quasi-symmetric) hybrid configurations featuring high-refractive-index-contrast near the non-uniform metallic nanostructures enable significantly improved optical performance over conventional hybrid waveguides, exhibiting considerably longer propagation distances and dramatically enhanced figure of merits for similar degrees of confinement. Compared to their traditional long-range plasmonic counterparts, the proposed hybrid waveguides put much less stringent requirements on index-matching conditions, demonstrating nice performance under a wide range of physical dimensions and robust characteristics against certain fabrication imperfections. Studies concerning crosstalk between adjacent identical waveguides further reveal their potential for photonic integrations. In addition, alternative configurations with comparable guiding properties to the structures in our case studies are also proposed, which can potentially serve as attractive prototypes for numerous high-performance nanophotonic components.

Abstract:We numerically show that it is easy to tune, both passively and actively, the transmission power delivered at different output ports of two coupled-bent dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguides by varying the gap distance and refractive index of driven material between two dielectric stripes. We also investigate the near-field intensity to demonstrate that the power transmitted at different output ports can be varied to realize either equal or unequal levels, depending on the design specifications. A simple expression is proposed to predict the power transmitted to different output ports for a set of given dimensions and refractive index of the driven material. Abstract:Two asymmetric directional couplers, including the dielectric-hybrid plasmonic coupler and the dielectric-metal insulator-metal plasmonic coupler, are investigated. The proposed hybrid coupler features short coupling length, high coupling efficiency and can be integrated into the silicon based platform. The applications of these hybrid couplers include the signal routing between plasmonic waveguides and dielectric waveguides in photonic integrated circuits and efficient excitation of plasmonic modes with conventional dielectric modes. Besides, a symmetric directional coupler based on silver nanowires is also demonstrated.

Abstract:Nanowires supporting propagating surface plasmons can function as nanowaveguides to realize the light guiding with field confinement beyond the diffraction limit, providing fundamental building blocks for nanophotonic integrated circuits. This review covers the recent developments of plasmon waveguiding in nanowires, mainly including plasmon waveguiding in metal nanowires, coupling of nanowire plasmons and emitters, hybrid nanowire waveguides and plasmonic gain, and nanowire photonic devices. We first introduce the main techniques for fabricating metal nanowires, the plasmon modes in metal nanowires and the excitation/detection methods. We then discuss the fundamental properties of plasmon propagation and emission, including zigzag, chiral and spin-dependent propagation, mode conversion, loss and propagation length, group velocity, terminal emission, and leaky radiation. Then the interactions between nanowires and emitters are reviewed, especially the coupling of single nanowires and single quantum emitters. Finally, we briefly introduce the hybrid nanowire waveguide composed of a semiconductor nanowire and a metal film with an intervening thin insulator and highlight a few nanophotonic devices based on plasmonic nanowire networks or plasmonic-photonic hybrid nanowire structures.
