Abstract:Subwavelength constraints and propagation distance contradiction in surface plasmon polariton (SPP) waveguide are currently the key issues. This study based on symmetric dielectric waveguide structures is designed for loaded glass SPPs to propagate optimization devices. The SPPs and Kretschmann model with similar structure are achieved without sacrificing the size of subwavelength waveguide and propagation distance of SPPs. FDTD analysis results show that improved waveguide structure of SPPs can significantly increase the propagation distance to 20-folds and improve the electric field strength. Comparative film layers of different thicknesses be seen as well. The film is the thinnest with best localization. The improved structure significantly increased the coupling effect of SPPs. This structure for SPPs in new photonic devices, broadband communications systems, small photon loops, and other aspects of integrated optoelectronic applications provide critical devices.

Abstract:Asymmetric directional coupling between a hybrid plasmonic waveguide with subwavelength field confinement and a conventional dielectric waveguide is investigated. The proposed hybrid coupler features short coupling length, high coupling efficiency, high extinction ratio, and low insertion loss; it can also be integrated into a silicon-based platform. This coupler can be potentially adopted for signal routing between plasmonic waveguides and dielectric waveguides in photonic integrated circuits. Furthermore, it can be exploited to efficiently excite hybrid plasmonic modes with conventional dielectric modes.
Hybrid Cylinder-Triangle Plasmonic Waveguide for Low Loss Propagation and Subwavelength Confinement

Abstract:In this paper, we design and analyze a novel hybrid cylinder-triangle plasmonic waveguide (HCTSPPs), which is composed of three high index dielectric cylinders placed above an equilateral triangular metal with the center corresponding to the three vertices of the triangle. The strong hybridization coupling between Si dielectric cylinders (SDCs) and the metallic triangular wedge SPP (WSPPs) enables enhanced field confinement inside the gap region as well as long propagation length. It is also shown that relative long propagation length (100 λ ) and ultra-small deep subwavelength effective mode area (λ2/4000) can be realized by gradual modification of the geometric size, which is one-order improvement compared to other hybrid waveguides. Moreover, an investigation of the effects of actual fabrication errors on the mode properties about HCTSPPs indicates that mode properties are also quite tolerant to fabrication deviations. The proposed waveguide could be applied to subwavelength laser devices and optically integrated circuits.

Abstract:A novel hybrid long-range surface plasmon waveguide structure comprising a narrow metal stripe, two relative low-index dielectric regions and dielectric ridges is proposed and analyzed. With the dielectric ridges and the two relative low-index dielectric regions symmetrically distributed on both sides of the narrow metal stripe, a symmetric hybrid long range mode with low electromagnetic transmission loss and subwavelength scale confinement is achieved. By optimizing the parameters, the propagation length of the proposed waveguide is increased to over two times to that of the conventional symmetric dielectric loaded surface plasmon waveguide, but the mode size only increases about 20%. For this benefit, the hybrid long-range surface plasmons waveguide is a good candidate for realizing high density photonic integration circuits.

Abstract:The backside nanoslot excited sub-wavelength grating-coupled Cu-strip silica-based plasmonic waveguides were developed using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation method. The performance of the designed waveguides was simulated, and the effects of copper film thickness on plasmonic wave propagation were analyzed for relatively low propagation loss design. The designed waveguides could achieve unidirectional guiding of the excited surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) with sub-wavelength lateral confinement and acceptable propagation length at nnicroscale, and the recommended design for the sub-wavelength grating-coupled Cu-strip SPP waveguide was given, with the potential applications for the fiber-optic devices or elements.

Abstract:A new kind of hybrid plasmonic waveguide is proposed, and its propagation properties are investigated using the finite-element method. This waveguide consists of a V-shaped silver nanowire embedded in a low-index dielectric cladding above a semiconductor substrate, which can confine light in the subwavelength region with a long propagation length. The field distribution, the mode effective index, the propagation length, and the normalized mode area of the hybrid mode supported by the waveguide are investigated at the wavelength of 1550 nm, which are dependent on the geometric parameters.

Abstract:A hybrid plasmonic waveguide with double low-index nano-slots is introduced. The fabrication is simple and compatible with the standard processes for SOI wafers. The theoretical investigation shows that the present hybrid plasmonic waveguide has a low loss and consequently a relatively long propagation distance (at the order of several tens of lambda). For TE polarization, there is a strong field enhancement in the double nanoslots. More power is confined in the low-index nano-slots for a smaller core width. For a 50nm-wide hybrid plasmonic waveguide with double 10nm-wide slots, the power confinement factor in the nano-slots is as high as 85% and the effective area is as small as 0.007 mu m(2) at 1550nm. Consequently, the power density in the nano-slots becomes very high, e. g., > 120 mu m(-2), which is very desired for many applications. For the present hybrid plasmonic waveguide, the lateral dimension could be less than 50nm and the calculated decoupled separation for two parallel identical waveguides is only 0.62 mu m, which is helpful to realize photonic integration circuits with ultra-high integration density. Abstract:In this paper, we theoretically propose a novel graphene-based hybrid plasmonic waveguide (GHPW) consisting of a low-index rectangle waveguide between a high-index cylindrical dielectric waveguide and the substrate with coated graphene on the surface. The geometric dependence of the mode characteristics on the proposed structure is analyzed in detail, showing that the proposed GHPW has a low loss and consequently a relatively long propagation distance. For TM polarization, highly confined modes guided in the low-index gap region between the graphene and the high-index GaAs and the normalized modal area is as small as 0.0018 (λ2/4) at 3 THz. In addition to enabling the building of high-density integration of the proposed structure are examined by analyzing crosstalk in a directional coupler composed of two GHPWs. This structure also exhibits ultra-low crosstalk when a center-to-center separation between adjacent GHPWs is 32μm, which shows great promise for constructing various terahertz integrated devices.

Abstract:A hybrid dual wedge plasmonic (HDWP) waveguide consisting of two dielectric wedges and a diamond metal wire was proposed. The coupling between dielectric wedge waveguide mode and long-rang surface plasmon polariton mode results in both low propagation loss and ultra-deep-subwavelength confinement. The HDWP waveguide achieves a normalized mode area of 2.9 x 10(-3) with a moderate propagation length of 532 mu m or a propagation length of 3028 mu m with a normalized mode area of 6.2 x 10(-3). The impacts of possible fabrication imperfections on the mode properties are studied. The results indicate that the HDWP waveguide is quite tolerant to fabrication errors.

Abstract:Facing the problems of ohmic loss and short propagation length, the application of plasmonic waveguides is limited. Here, a triangle hybrid plasmonic waveguide is introduced, where a cylinder silicon waveguide is separated from the triangle prism silver waveguide by a nanoscale silica gap. The process of constant optimization of waveguide structure is completed and simulation results indicate that the propagation length could reach a length of 510 mu m, and the normalized mode area could reach 0.03 along with a high figure of merit 3150. This implies that longer propagation length could be simultaneously achieved along with relatively ultra-deep subwavelength mode confinement due to the hybridization between metallic plasmon polarization mode and silicon waveguide mode, compared with previous study. By an analysis of fabrication errors, it is confirmed that this waveguide is fairly stable over a wide error range. Additionally, the excellent performance of this is further proved by the comparison with other hybrid plasmonic waveguides. Our work is significant to manipulate light waves at sub-wavelength dimensions and enlarge the application fields, such as light detection and photoelectric sensors, which also benefit the improvement of the integration of optical devices.

Abstract:In this paper, a long-range hybrid waveguide for subwavelength confinement based on double SPP coupling is proposed. The hybrid waveguide consists of a metal-based cylindrical hybrid waveguide and a silver nanowire. There are two coupling regions in the waveguide structure that enhance mode coupling. Strong mode coupling enables the waveguide to exhibit both a small effective mode area (0.01) and an extremely long transmission length (700 μm). The figure of merit (FOM) of the waveguide can be as high as 4000. In addition, the cross-sectional area of the waveguide is only 500 nm × 500 nm, allowing optical operation in the subwavelength range, which helps enhance the miniaturization of optoelectronic devices. The excellent characteristics of the hybrid waveguide make it have potential applications in photoelectric integrated systems.

Abstract:An asymmetric hybrid plasmonic metal-wire waveguide is proposed by combining the advantages of symmetric and hybrid plasmonic modes. The idea of asymmetric structure eliminates the adverse effect of a substrate and enhances the optical performance of the waveguide. The guiding properties of the proposed waveguide are intensively investigated using the finite elements method. The results exhibit a quite long propagation length of 2.69 cm with subwavelength confinement. More importantly, an extremely large figure of merit of 139037 is achieved. Furthermore, the proposed waveguides can be used as directional couplers. They can achieve a coupling length of only 1.01 μm at S = 0.1 μm with negligible loss. A strong dependence of coupling length on the operating wavelength makes the proposed waveguide promising for realizing wavelength-selective components at telecommunication wavelengths.

Abstract:The paper presents a novel long-range hybrid insulator-metal-insulator (IMI) plasmonic waveguide, which is composed of two silicon wedge nanowires and a cylinder metal nanowire. Compared with other hybrid plasmonic waveguide, the proposed waveguide shows better properties. With strong coupling between the silicon nanowire mode and long-range surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mode, both deep subwavelength mode confinement and low propagation loss have been achieved. The properties of the hybrid IMI plasmonic waveguide including propagation length (L), normalized mode area (A(eff) /A(0)) and figure of merit (FoM) are evaluated. Compared with the hybrid plasmonic waveguides, the designed waveguide enables an ultra-small deep-subwavelength mode in smaller area. The propagation length is nearly 1mm and FoM is similar to 10(4), which is larger than that of wedge or rectangle hybrid plasmonic waveguides. We also evaluate the impacts of practical fabrication imperfections on the mode properties. The results show that the proposed waveguide is fairly tolerant to the practical fabrication errors in geometry parameters. The proposed waveguide has many potential applications for nano-photonic components of high performance.

Abstract:A long-range surface plasmon polariton (LRSPP) waveguide consisting of a 15 nm thick gold stripe embedded in a homogeneous polymer BCB is reported. LRSPPs are excited by TM-mode input light successfully using an end-lire method. By scanning the output coupling fibre, the near field of the LRSPP is measured. The propagation loss of as low as 2.34 dB/mm is demonstrated.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) have been thoroughly studied in the past decades for not only sensing but also waveguiding applications. Various plasmonic device structures have been explored due to their ability to confine their optical mode to the subwavelength level. However, with the existence of metal, the large ohmic loss limits the propagation distance of the SPP and thus the scalability of such devices. Therefore, different hybrid waveguides have been proposed to overcome this shortcoming. Through fine tuning of the coupling between the SPP and a conventional waveguide mode, a hybrid mode could be excited with decent mode confinement and extended propagation distance. As an effective alternative of SPP, Bloch surface waves have been re-investigated more recently for their unique advantages. As is supported in all-dielectric structures, the optical loss for the Bloch surface wave is much lower, which stands for a much longer propagating distance. Yet, the confinement of the Bloch surface wave due to the reflections and refractions in the multilayer structure is not as tight as that of the SPP. In this work, by integrating a periodic multilayer structure that supports the Bloch surface wave with a metallic nanowire structure, a hybrid Bloch surface wave polariton could be excited. With the proposed hybrid nanowire structure, a hybrid mode is demonstrated with the deep subwavelength mode confinement and a propagation distance of tens of microns.
