Abstract:We have developed a near-field vector beam measurement system covering the range of frequencies from 385 to 500 GHz. The measurement set-up is capable of measurements with dynamic range exceeding 50 dB and amplitude and phase stability respectively of 0.1 dB/h and 1 degree/5 min at room temperature. Beam patterns of the ALMA band 8 corrugated horns and receiver optics block were measured at room temperature and lately compared with physical optics calculations obtained in the far-field. Both co-polar and cross-polar beam patterns of a qualification model of the ALMA band 8 cartridge cooled in a cartridge-test-cryostat have also been measured in the near-field as a detector of a submillimeter vector network analyzer. The measurements presented in this work refer to the lowest, middle and upper frequencies of band 8. The comparisons between software model and experimental measurements at these frequencies show good agreement down to −30 dB for the main polarization component. The cross-polarization level of the beam propagating through the receiver optics block was also characterized. We found that a cross-polarization level better than −28 dB can be achieved at all measured frequencies. The measured beam pattern of this receiver corresponds to efficiency of greater than 92% at the sub reflector (diameter of 750 mm) of the ALMA 12 m optics.

Abstract:A lens antenna based on dispersion characteristics of corrugated waveguide is presented for one-dimensional (1-D) beam scanning at Ka-band. The dispersion characteristics of the corrugated waveguide can be controlled by adjusting the parameters of the corrugations. Thus, the effective index of refraction of the corrugated waveguide can be designed to realize the required phase delay to transform cylindrical waves into plane waves. A five-element linear array of waveguide slot antennas is used to feed the corrugation lens for multiple beam scanning. The measured aperture efficiency of the lens antenna is above 60% for the on-axis beam from 30 to 32 GHz. The resulting -3 dB coverage of the designed lens antenna is +/- 14.1 degrees at 30 GHz.

Abstract:We have developed a dual polarization prototype model of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Band 10 (787-950 GHz) receivers. The front-end optics comprises a pair of ellipsoidal mirrors, a wire grid, and two corrugated feed horns. A waveguide mixer block is attached to each feed horn in which a mixer chip employing Nb/AlOx/Nb juncions and NbTiN/SiO2/Al microstrip tuning circuits is mounted to a WR-1.2 full-height waveguide. A local oscillator (LO) signal receiving horn and a waveguide 10-dB LO coupler are integrated in the block to provide the LO signal to the mixer chip. A fixed-tuned multiplier with a diagonal horn located at the 110-K stage is used to transmit the LO power. The LO signal is then quasi-optically coupled to the mixer receiving horn. A very wide intermediate frequency (IF) system with a bandwidth of 4-12 GHz is employed. The receiver demonstrated double sideband (DSB) noise temperatures of about 160 K (4hν/kB) without any correction for loss in front of the receiver at the LO frequency of 834 GHz at an operating physical temperature of 4 K.
Planar near-field measurements of specular and diffuse reflection of millimeter-wave absorbers

Abstract:Mitigating the far sidelobes of a wide field-of-view telescope is one of the critical issues for polarization observation of the cosmic microwave background. Since even small reflections of stray light at the millimeter-wave absorbers inside the telescope may create nonnegligible far sidelobes, we have developed a method to measure the reflectance of millimeter-wave absorbers, including diffuse reflections. By applying the planar near-field measurement method to the absorbers, we have enabled two-dimensional diffuse-reflection measurements, in addition to characterizing specular reflection. We have measured the reflectance of five samples (TK RAM Large and Small Tiles and Eccosorb AN-72, HR-10, and LS-22) at two angles of incidence in the frequency range from 70 GHz to 110 GHz. Compared with conventional horn-to-horn measurements, we obtained a consistent specular reflectance with a higher precision, less affected by standing waves. We have demonstrated that the angular response and diffuse-to-specular reflectance ratio differ among various materials. The measurements also imply that some absorbers may affect the polarization direction when reflecting the incident waves.

Abstract:Platelets corrugated horn is a promising technology for its scalability to a large corrugated horn array. In this communication, we present the design, fabrication, measurement, and uncertainty analysis of a wideband 170–320 GHz platelet corrugated horn that features with low sidelobe across the band (<−30 dB). We also propose an accurate and universal method to analyze the axial misalignment of the platelets for the first time. It is based on the mode matching (MM) method with a closed-form solution to off-axis circular waveguide discontinuities obtained by using Graf addition theorem for the Bessel functions. The uncertainties introduced in the fabrication have been quantitatively analyzed using the Monte Carlo method. The analysis shows that the cross-polarization of the corrugated horn degrades significantly with the axial misalignment. It well explains the discrepancy between the designed and the measured cross-polarization of platelets corrugated horn fabricated in the THz band. The method can be used to determine the fabrication tolerance needed for other THz corrugated horns and evaluate the impact of the corrugated horn for astronomical observations.

Abstract:We present the design and performance of a 2x2 prototype array of corrugated feed-horns in W-band. The module is fabricated using a so-called "platelet" technique by milling Aluminum plates. This technique is suitable for low-cost and scalable high performance applications. Room temperature Return Loss measurements show a low (<-30 dB) reflection over a 30% bandwidth with a maximum matching of -42 dB at 100 GHz for all four antennas. Beam pattern measurements indicate good repeatability and a low (-25 dB) sidelobe and crosspolarisation levels. This work is particularly relevant for future Cosmic Microwave Background polarisation measurements, which require large microwave cryogenic detector arrays coupled to high performance corrugated feed horns.

Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics

Abstract:A major goal of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is to make accurate images with resolutions of tens of milliarcseconds, which at submillimeter (submm) wavelengths requires baselines up to ~15 km. To develop and test this capability, a Long Baseline Campaign (LBC) was carried out from September to late November 2014, culminating in end-to-end observations, calibrations, and imaging of selected Science Verification (SV) targets. This paper presents an overview of the campaign and its main results, including an investigation of the short-term coherence properties and systematic phase errors over the long baselines at the ALMA site, a summary of the SV targets and observations, and recommendations for science observing strategies at long baselines. Deep ALMA images of the quasar 3C138 at 97 and 241 GHz are also compared to VLA 43 GHz results, demonstrating an agreement at a level of a few percent. As a result of the extensive program of LBC testing, the highly successful SV imaging at long baselines achieved angular resolutions as fine as 19 mas at ~350 GHz. Observing with ALMA on baselines of up to 15 km is now possible, and opens up new parameter space for submm astronomy.

Abstract:We have developed a single polarization engineering model of the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) Band 10 (0.78–0.95 THz) receivers. The front-end optics comprises a pair of ellipsoidal mirrors and a corrugated feed horn. A waveguide mixer block is attached to the feed horn in which an NbTiN-based superconductor–insulator–superconductor (SIS) mixer chip, which uses a quartz substrate, is mounted onto a WR-1.2 full-height waveguide. The SIS mixer employs two Nb/AlOx/Nb junctions and an NbTiN/SiO2/Al microstrip tuning circuit. A very wide intermediate frequency (IF) system with a bandwidth of 4–12 GHz is employed. The receiver demonstrated double-sideband (DSB) noise temperatures of below 240 K at local oscillator (LO) frequencies ranging from 792 to 945 GHz, without any correction for loss in front of the receiver. The lowest DSB receiver noise temperature, 179 K, was obtained at the center frequency of the designed band, which corresponds to about 4 quanta. These results represent state-of-the-art sensitivity for a receiver at an operating physical temperature of 4 K.

Abstract:We present the calibration and reduction of Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) 1.3 mm radio wavelengthobservations of the supermassive black hole candidate at the center of the radio galaxy M87 and thequasar 3C 279, taken during the 2017 April 5–11 observing campaign. These global very long baselineinterferometric observations include for the first time the highly sensitive Atacama LargeMillimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA); reaching an angular resolution of 25 μ as, withcharacteristic sensitivity limits of ∼1 mJy on baselines to ALMA and ∼10 mJy on other baselines. Theobservations present challenges for existing data processing tools, arising from the rapidatmospheric phase fluctuations, wide recording bandwidth, and highly heterogeneous array. Inresponse, we developed three independent pipelines for phase calibration and fringe detection, eachtailored to the specific needs of the EHT. Abstract:A major goal of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is to make accurate images with resolutions of tens of milliarcseconds, which at submillimeter (submm) wavelengths requires baselines up to 15 km. To develop and test this capability, a Long Baseline Campaign (LBC) was carried out from September to late November 2014, culminating in end-to-end observations, calibrations, and imaging of selected Science Verification (SV) targets. This paper presents an overview of the campaign and its main results, including an investigation of the short-term coherence properties and systematic phase errors over the long baselines at the ALMA site, a summary of the SV targets and observations, and recommendations for science observing strategies at long baselines. Deep ALMA images of the quasar 3C138 at 97 and 241 GHz are also compared to VLA 43 GHz results, demonstrating an agreement at a level of a few percent. As a result of the extensive program of LBC testing, the highly successful SV imaging at long baselines achieved angular resolutions as fine as 19 mas at 350 GHz. Observing with ALMA on baselines of up to 15 km is now possible, and opens up new parameter space for submm astronomy.

Abstract:The upper mid-band (or FR3, spanning 6-24 GHz) is a crucial frequency range for next-generation mobile networks, offering a favorable balance between coverage and spectrum efficiency. From another perspective, the systems operating in the near-field in both indoor environment and outdoor environments can support line-of-sight multiple input multiple output (MIMO) communications and be beneficial from the FR3 bands. In this paper, a novel method is proposed to measure the near-field parameters leveraging a recently developed reflection model where the near-field paths can be described by their image points. We show that these image points can be accurately estimated via triangulation from multiple measurements with a small number of antennas in each measurement, thus affording a low-cost procedure for near-field multi-path parameter extraction. A preliminary experimental apparatus is presented comprising 2 transmit and 2 receive antennas mounted on a linear track to measure the 2x2 MIMO channel at various displacements. The system uses a recently-developed wideband radio frequency (RF) transceiver board with fast frequency switching, an FPGA for fast baseband processing, and a new parameter extraction method to recover paths and spherical characteristics from the multiple 2x2 measurements.

Abstract:The Atacama Large Millimeter and Submillimeter Array (ALMA) band 10 cartrid es are being designed based on use of waveguide components such as couplers, because of their mechanical ruggedness and reliability. Although recent machining technology makes it possible to fabricate such small waveguide components with sizes of down to several tens of microns, it is important to characterize their electrical performance experimentally at room and cryogenic temperatures. For the room temperature measurements, we have developed a vector network analyzer, which consists of a W-band Gunn oscillator followed by a nonupler as a transmitter and a subharmonic Schottky diode mixer pumped by another W-band Gunn oscillator as a receiver. Both Gunn oscillators are phase-locked to a sin g le microwave reference, but on different sidebands. The device under test (DUT) is put between the transmitter and the receiver and the insertion loss and phase difference is measured. For the cryogenic temperature measurements, we used SIS mixers consisted of a corrugated horn and a mixer block. These are connected by a common waveguide flange. The DUT is inserted between them. By measuring the mixer gains or noise temperatures with and without the DUT, the insertion loss is simply estimated from the chan e of the gains or noise temperatures due to the input loss. Fi g ure 1 shows a photograph of a 10-dB directional coupler with WR-1.2 (0.305 0.152 mm) gold-plated waveguide made by machining. The total len th of the wavcguides is 30 mm. Figure 2 shows the measured insertion losses at room temperature. This result is reasonable if we assume an electrical conductivity of the gold at room temperature, which suggests that the part of the 10-dB coupler with two slits works well as expected. however, the insertion loss at cryogenic temperature showed a lare loss of about 1.8 dB/30 mm. To confirm this unexpected waveguide loss, we measured the loss in a 25-mm-length straight waveguide as well. The result showed the waveguide losses of about 1.3 d13125 mm, which is similar to the result of the 10-dB coupler. This implies that the length of the waveguide components should be designed as short as possible to reduce the waveguide loss in more than this frequency band.

Abstract:We present the results from a full polarization study carried out with ALMA during the first VLBI campaign, which was conducted in Apr 2017 in the $\lambda$3mm and $\lambda$1.3mm bands, in concert with the Global mm-VLBI Array (GMVA) and the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), respectively. We determine the polarization and Faraday properties of all VLBI targets, including Sgr A*, M87, and a dozen radio-loud AGN. We detect high linear polarization fractions (2-15%) and large rotation measures (RM $>10^{3.3}-10^{5.5}$ rad m$^{-2}$). For Sgr A* we report a mean RM of $(-4.2\pm0.3) \times10^5$ rad m$^{-2}$ at 1.3 mm, consistent with measurements over the past decade, and, for the first time, an RM of $(-2.1\pm0.1) \times10^5$ rad m$^{-2}$ at 3 mm, suggesting that about half of the Faraday rotation at 1.3 mm may occur between the 3 mm photosphere and the 1.3 mm source. We also report the first unambiguous measurement of RM toward the M87 nucleus at mm wavelengths, which undergoes significant changes in magnitude and sign reversals on a one year time-scale, spanning the range from -1.2 to 0.3 $\times\,10^5$ rad m$^{-2}$ at 3 mm and -4.1 to 1.5 $\times\,10^5$ rad m$^{-2}$ at 1.3 mm. Given this time variability, we argue that, unlike the case of Sgr A*, the RM in M87 does not provide an accurate estimate of the mass accretion rate onto the black hole. We put forward a two-component model, comprised of a variable compact region and a static extended region, that can simultaneously explain the polarimetric properties observed by both the EHT and ALMA. These measurements provide critical constraints for the calibration, analysis, and interpretation of simultaneously obtained VLBI data with the EHT and GMVA.

Abstract:Abstract Very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of active galactic nuclei at millimetre wavelengths have the power to reveal the launching and initial collimation region of extragalactic radio jets, down to 10–100 gravitational radii ( r g ≡ G M / c 2 ) scales in nearby sources 1 . Centaurus A is the closest radio-loud source to Earth 2 . It bridges the gap in mass and accretion rate between the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in Messier 87 and our Galactic Centre. A large southern declination of −43° has, however, prevented VLBI imaging of Centaurus A below a wavelength of 1 cm thus far. Here we show the millimetre VLBI image of the source, which we obtained with the Event Horizon Telescope at 228 GHz. Compared with previous observations 3 , we image the jet of Centaurus A at a tenfold higher frequency and sixteen times sharper resolution and thereby probe sub-lightday structures. We reveal a highly collimated, asymmetrically edge-brightened jet as well as the fainter counterjet. We find that the source structure of Centaurus A resembles the jet in Messier 87 on ~500 r g scales remarkably well. Furthermore, we identify the location of Centaurus A’s SMBH with respect to its resolved jet core at a wavelength of 1.3 mm and conclude that the source’s event horizon shadow 4 should be visible at terahertz frequencies. This location further supports the universal scale invariance of black holes over a wide range of masses 5,6 .

Abstract:BICEP Array is a degree-scale Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiment that will search for primordial B-mode polarization while constraining Galactic foregrounds. BICEP Array will be comprised of four receivers to cover a broad frequency range with channels at 30/40, 95, 150 and 220/270 GHz. The first low-frequency receiver will map synchrotron emission at 30 and 40 GHz and will deploy to the South Pole at the end of 2019. In this paper, we give an overview of the BICEP Array science and instrument, with a focus on the detector module. We designed corrugations in the metal frame of the module to suppress unwanted interactions with the antenna-coupled detectors that would otherwise deform the beams of edge pixels. This design reduces the residual beam systematics and temperature-to-polarization leakage due to beam steering and shape mismatch between polarized beam pairs. We report on the simulated performance of single- and wide-band corrugations designed to minimize these effects. Our optimized design alleviates beam differential ellipticity caused by the metal frame to about 7% over 57% bandwidth (25 to 45 GHz), which is close to the level due the bare antenna itself without a metal frame. Initial laboratory measurements are also presented.

Abstract:We use the Atacama Large sub/Millimetre Array (ALMA) to efficiently observe spectral lines across Bands 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 at high-resolution (0.5" - 0.1") for 16 bright southern Herschel sources at $1.5 < z < 4.2$. With only six and a half hours of observations, we reveal 66 spectral lines in 17 galaxies. These observations detect emission from CO (3-2) to CO(18-17), as well as atomic ([CI](1-0), (2-1), [OI] 145 $\mu$m and [NII] 205 $\mu$m) lines. Additional molecular lines are seen in emission (${\rm H_2O}$ and ${\rm H_2O^+}$) and absorption (OH$^+$ and CH$^+$). The morphologies based on dust continuum ranges from extended sources to strong lensed galaxies with magnifications between 2 and 30. CO line transitions indicate a diverse set of excitation conditions with a fraction of the sources ($\sim 35$%) showcasing dense, warm gas. The resolved gas to star-formation surface densities vary strongly per source, and suggest that the observed diversity of dusty star-forming galaxies could be a combination of lensed, compact dusty starbursts and extended, potentially-merging galaxies. The predicted gas depletion timescales are consistent with 100 Myr to 1 Gyr, but require efficient fueling from the extended gas reservoirs onto the more central starbursts, in line with the Doppler-shifted absorption lines that indicate inflowing gas for two out of six sources. This pilot paper explores a successful new method of observing spectral lines in large samples of galaxies, supports future studies of larger samples, and finds that the efficiency of this new observational method will be further improved with the planned ALMA Wideband Sensitivity Upgrade.

Abstract:We have developed a cartridge-type receiver covering from 385 to 500 GHz for pre-production of ALMA Band 8. It receives two orthogonal polarizations and down-converts the sideband-separated signals to intermediate frequencies (IF) between 4 and 8 GHz. The cartridge-type receiver consists of a cold optics, a feed horn, an OMT, two sideband-separating SIS mixers, cryogenic multipliers of local oscillator (LO). These components were individually tested and then the cartridge was integrated and tested as a complete assembly. We have also developed equipment to test both components and the integrated receiver. The single sideband (SSB) noise temperature of this receiver is 130 K at the band center and 180 K at the band edges. The beam pattern and cross-polarization pattern are consistent with physical optical calculation. These results are promising for receiver production to the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA).

Abstract:ALMA Band 8 (385 - 500 GHz) is one of frequency bands which cover atmospheric windows on the Atacama desert in the northern Chile. We have developed a cartridge-type receiver which receives two orthogonal polarizations and down-converts the sideband separated signals to intermediate frequencies (IF) between 4 and 8 GHz. A waveguide polarization splitter or ortho-mode transducer (OMT) has been developed, which enables the cryogenic optics quite simple. It achieved low loss of ~0.4 dB at 4 K and polarization isolation of -25 dB in 385 - 500 GHz (1). A sideband separating mixer consists of two DSB Nb-based SIS mixers and waveguide quadrature coupler (2). The receiver noise temperature was less than 8 hf/k or 196 K in SSB and the image rejection ratio of > 10 dB in the 90 % of ALMA Band 8 frequency. Gain compression of this receiver was measured. The amplitude and phase stabilities were confirmed to comply the ALMA specifications. The co-polar and cross polar beam patterns of this receiver were measured in five frequencies (3). Test results of S/N 01 cartridge will be presented.

Abstract:This paper details the design of an autonomous alignment and tracking platform to mechanically steer directional horn antennas in a sliding correlator channel sounder setup for 28 GHz V2X propagation modeling. A pan-and-tilt subsystem facilitates uninhibited rotational mobility along the yaw and pitch axes, driven by open-loop servo units and orchestrated via inertial motion controllers. A geo-positioning subsystem augmented in accuracy by real-time kinematics enables navigation events to be shared between a transmitter and receiver over an Apache Kafka messaging middleware framework with fault tolerance. Herein, our system demonstrates a 3D geo-positioning accuracy of 17 cm, an average principal axes positioning accuracy of 1.1 degrees, and an average tracking response time of 27.8 ms. Crucially, fully autonomous antenna alignment and tracking facilitates continuous series of measurements, a unique yet critical necessity for millimeter wave channel modeling in vehicular networks. The power-delay profiles, collected along routes spanning urban and suburban neighborhoods on the NSF POWDER testbed, are used in pathloss evaluations involving the 3GPP TR38.901 and ITU-R M.2135 standards. Empirically, we demonstrate that these models fail to accurately capture the 28 GHz pathloss behavior in urban foliage and suburban radio environments. In addition to RMS direction-spread analyses for angles-of-arrival via the SAGE algorithm, we perform signal decoherence studies wherein we derive exponential models for the spatial/angular autocorrelation coefficient under distance and alignment effects.
